When I click on the get windows 10 icon in my system tray it tells me it's
validating my windows or something like that then it says it'll notify me
when it's ready. How do I know when It's ready? How will I be notified?
Via email and if so which email address will it send it to?
Thanks

Hi all,
I just wanted you to know that you can up grade to Windows 10 with JAWS
16.0.4350 or JAWS 16.0.4463. You do not have to wait until you receive JAWS
17 to up grade. I up graded with JAWS 16.0.4350 and the experience couldn't
have been better. You can use Narrator to do the last couple of steps and
JAWS will come back talking. When it does, just remember to uninstall JAWS
and Reinstall JAWS even if you upgraded from Windows 8.1. It makes things
work so much better in Win 10 if you do. Take care.

It appeared to me, when I purchased my new SMA for JAWS 18 and 19, and
upgraded to 17, that the disk would cost $10. I saw nothing to make me
believe that I would be receiving one by mail. I then talked to FS Sales, to
make my SMA purchase, and nothing was said about them sending me the disk
either. So, unless someone receives one and posts that they did, then I am
assuming that there will be no disk sentt.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft Accessibility;Says

Hello Gang:

I tried to upgrade an older Dell laptop to Windows 10, yesterday, through
the MS Accessibility Help Desk. But, was unsuccessful, because I had so many
Windows 7 updates to download and install. Still having to download some
today.

However, here is my point. While talking to one of the MS helpers, he told
me, "Well, Sir, you know that when we do the download for Windows 10, there
will be a time, when there is no connection with us, and sighted assistance
will be necessary." I replied, "Well, I understand at that point, I can turn
on the narrator and complete it without sighted assistance."

He said, "I don't think that is really the case. You need sighted
assistance."

Well, according to the notes from Jim Flusche, The narrator is totally
useable, after the 10 install. Or did I misunderstand Jim's instructions?

Two final questions:

1. Does FS send out CDs for the JAWS 17, for those of us with a SMA?

2. Would a CD be a good thing to have for starting a new Windows 10
computer, or can that be done via narrator, as well.

Thanks. Have a great Sunday!

Neil

Hi Jaws users group.
I combined all 9 parts of the Settings area of w-10 into one Word document
of about 11,000 words.
Now, this my second project.
I have changed, added to, subtracted from, clarified, and organized, all
previous TXT files on customizing w-10 with Jaws, into this one file.
All feedback and comments are welcome as always.

1. The first thing you need to do on your Windows 10 computer is, Download
the latest version of Jaws to your Download folder.
2. If you upgraded to w-10 from w-7 or w-8.1, you need to uninstall Jaws,
you can keep shared components and shared settings, so, uninstall Jaws 16 or

I used the media tool from Microsoft, you must have reserved windows 10 to

I personally give Microsoft a A+ for windows 10.
All my files, folders, and settings were transferred without any problems.
So far all my programs work.
the first time I used the Microsoft tool, it took about 2 hours to download
windows 10, but five minutes into the setup it failed.
I immediately did the download again, took about 20 minutes, and upgraded my

Again, after uninstalling and reinstalling jaws, I had no issues on windows
10.

[JAWS-Users] question about jaws and windows 10

Hi,
I think it depends on how comfortable you are with tech will depend on
whether you need sight to update to windows ten. Last night I updated my
Lenovo Laptop running Windows 8.1 to windows 10 without sight with no
difficulties. I had one moment of hesitation when it brought up a screen
after a reboot and did not speak. I thought I wonder what it is doing now
and I wonder if it is safe to use narrator. So I whipped out my iPhone and
my KNFB reader in a totally dark room and it read the screen to me. And from
the contents of the screen I knew it was safe to use narrator to get me to
the log in screen at which point jaws kicked in. I was already running the
latest version of jaws. Once that happened I could exit narrator and log in.

I should also add that I was running on about two hours of sleep at the time
and was barely functioning myself at the time. Tonight I activated Cortana
and configured the default browser and everything is running very well with
jaws 16, magic 13 which I do occasionally use but did not use last night,
and windows 10.
Hope that helps.
Merv

 Hi,

You wouldn't really want to run both at the same time but you can
switch between the two screen readers with no problem.
NVDA doesn't make any changes to the video driver chain.
It will be up to you to decide on which one you want to load up on the
startup screen and then after logon etc.
In the past, I have configured my laptop to have NVDA load up at the
logon screen and then JAWS after logging on to the machine.

 Hi Steven,

The steps below are for Word 2013 but, should work for Word 2010 as
 well.:

Before creating a new Normal template you should first make a backup
 of your normal.dotm template.
 1. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will
asume you know how to do that.

 2. Close Word.

 3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \
 Templates.
Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm.
Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically
create a new Normal.dotm template when you open Word.

 4. Open Word.

 5. Start a new blank document however you do that.

 6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number
 styles, font, etc.

 7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as
you set up the things you want files to be based on.

 8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As.

 9. In the filename box, type, Normal.

 10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the
file type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you
want.

 11. You can tab to the, Save button, press enter or, just press,
Alt + S, then press, Alt + F4, to close the document the new
Normal.dotm should be saved wherever your default save to is located,
which is usually the Documents folder. Now find the newly created
file put it into the Templates folder located here:
 C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates.

You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every
 new document.

Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file,
just go back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm
back to Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have
and let Word rebuild one from its default settings.

For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can
also have Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if
you want to save changes to the template. That's typically if you
 create macros, etc.
That setting is under the Save options

 Take care.

Hi David Leonard,

There is a program called Speak Dropbox that resides in the system tray
can be accessed with keystrokes so you don't have to mess with the Dropbox
menues. I've been using this little gem for quite awhile now really like
it.

Here is the alternative way, other than using scripts, to hear what the
dropbox status is. It's a little freeware program called Speak Dropbox. I
heard about it on ACB's Main Menu podcast. It speaks the icon status. It can
also open DB menu. The link to read more about the application is:

When I enter on open sometimes I get the list of folders and other times I

However, it's never consistent. If I hit the alt key I'll get the system

Go to webvisum.com and download the add on, then go to the log on after you
install it and create an account. I believe you'll have to send webvisum an
email asking them to grant you a password. You have to tell them you're

figure it out and still need help let me know and I'll walk you through it

Hi,
I have had this issue for years with Excel 2003 and 2010, running various
versions of JAWS on different systems running XP, Vista, Win 7, and Win 8.
I have found no work around that is consistently reliable. Sometimes
unloading and reloading JAWS will help temporarily. One solution is to copy
the formula into notepad, edit it there, and copy it back to the cell. I
have reported to FS. They say that it is a known issue but no word as to
when it might be fixed. I would say that they are in no hurry as I have
encountered this problem at least back to JAWS 8 or 9.

Jaws 16 does not work with LYNC, but Jaws 15 does. FS knows about the
problem and promises to fix it in an upcoming build of Jaws 16. Meanwhile,
the workaround is to use Jaws 15 with LYNC. It's a pain, and I don't get
why something that works was broken jumping from 15 to 16. Also, google
LYNC accessibility. Mind the spelling. MS publishes accessibility

2015-01-14 Thread Johna Lynn Nordin
I'm using a windows 8.1 del laptop with jaws 16 and lync 2013 and it seems
to be working fine thankfully. As for my excel working correctly that's
another story. I can't seem to edit data cells with the f2
Jaws just reads blank lines

Interesting! We tried Jaws 16 and LYNC on multiple computers, and they all
crashed. FS told us there was a problem with Jaws 16 and that they would
repair it as soon as they could. The computers are state machines with
blind employees like me using them. We faced no such issues with Jaws 15.

I'm using lync and jaws 16 at work and they work pretty good together.
Sometimes I can't get to my contact list but my work around for that is to
just type the person's name into the search field and it opens up a message
to them.

Jaws 16 does not work with LYNC, but Jaws 15 does. FS knows about the
problem and promises to fix it in an upcoming build of Jaws 16. Meanwhile,
the workaround is to use Jaws 15 with LYNC. It's a pain, and I don't get
why something that works was broken jumping from 15 to 16. Also, google
LYNC accessibility. Mind the spelling. MS publishes accessibility
directions, and they are pretty good.

I work in the Federal Government and it is on our systems. I have limited
ability to work it. I am told with some training, I could work it better.
