Hi Mike, on windows 8 or 8.1, one way of getting to the settings stuff is to: 1. press windows key to go to the start screen. 2. type in Jaws. 3. Arrow down till you get to utilities - Jaws 14 or 15, and press enter. 4. File explorer opens at a folder which contains shortcuts to settings and so on. I believe if you update to 8.1 you get a start button again.
