This is a hard question. Everything installed on a new computer that is
not from Microsoft is suspect in my view! After buying a few computers,
you can be fairly sure of some. Others, I try to determine what their
purpose is.

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to
remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are
paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like
Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of
accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the
background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date.
Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I
usually
attempt once. I remove or disable almost all of their
software.

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like Norton,
you could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the background
and are meant to keep your drivers from them
up-to-date. Unfortunately, I have found all software from
manufacturers not usable! I usually attempt once. I remove or
disable almost all of their software.

Were your computers working fine& then all of sudden the computer

reacting really slow in responding to the keyboard commands? I have

Yes, there is a better way if you do a bit of searching.

You can Google the name of each program and find out its function. There
are sites like

www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
that list a whole bunch of startup programs and tell you whether they are
necessary or not.

A lot of programs always want to run in the background when you install
them, on the theory that when needed they come up more instantaneously. In
reality, very few of those programs need to be running in the background.
The only ones that do are Windows system programs, your screen reader, and
any of your net security programs like anti-virus and firewall.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

How can I tell by the file name if I really need it?

The only way I know how to proceed, is to remove one at a time, and then
restart and try out your computer after rebooting. As you can guess, that
takes quite a long time.

Do you know of a better way to tell from an unknown program name, if it

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to decrease time for JAWS to respond

2011-07-11 Thread Hans Pauli Sundstein

Hi again.

An other thinng that could be the reson for the slow down of your computer,
is if you are running an Antivirus program, that has a very active animated
icon on the taskbar, this can take so much focus from Jaws, so it is better
to either change the icon if possible, or disable the view of this.

Hope you find a solution for your problem.

Hans Pauli.

This is Vicky responding. In my slow down case, it is something that I've
just noticed within the last year or so.

However, since I am known for trying out various JAWS settings and then not
being able to figure out what new change was caused by what specific setting
I might have changed, let alone under what sub menu to look for it, I have
no idea if this problem comes from a JAWS setting or the ageing computer.

Thanks! Vicky

Were your computers working fine & then all of sudden the computer started
reacting really slow in responding to the keyboard commands? I have

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to
remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are
paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like
Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of
accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the
background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date.
Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I
usually
attempt once. I remove or disable almost all of their
software.

2011-07-11 Thread Mike & Barbara In Arcadia
Hi Riana,

This is a shot in the dark but,I had a different problem of Jaws constantly
repeating any character that was highlighted. Try the following to see if
it helps. It will only take a minute or so. The below steps are for XP so,
you'll have to figure out how to apply them to Windows7.
1. Open the control panel and press enter to open Accessibility Options.
2. Control + Tab to the display page.
3. Tab to Cursor Options Blink Rate left right slider, this should be at
63%.
4. Tab to Cursor Options Width left right slider, this should be at 0%.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Do you have this key echo delay with other screen readers like NVDA and
System Access to Go? It might be worth trying one or both of these two
  free
screen readers to see whether you experience the same key echo delay
  problem
with them as you do with JAWS. This way, you can determine whether the
  key
echo delay is a JAWS problem only, or a more general hardware problem.

This kind of processor has a very small cache, which often is resulting
by
very slow responding from the computer's keyboard.

It can help a bit, having enough ram, at least 1 mb for a XP system, but
it
will never be good, before the processor/motherboard has been changed to

another type, probably an Intel I3 board.

I don't know if this really is your problem, but it seam's to me to be

Thank you for your instructions! They sound very useful for speeding up
my
computer. However, what I am particularly referring to, is the time
delay
between pressing a letter key and hearing JAWS echo it. Sometimes, JAWS
seems to not even know that I have pressed a key.

I've cleaned my keyboard, with the compressed air and got a lot of dog

out of it. May be it's just wearing out?

I had thought that this was just a Jaws problem, but now, I'm not so
sure.

Many thanks for any thoughts on this matter! Vicky

No, my pc is brand new, or was, having this hassle since the first

Hi Riana & Vicky,

Were your computers working fine & then all of sudden the computer
started
reacting really slow in responding to the keyboard commands? I have
played
around with Keyboard & Accessibility Options in the control panel &
haven't
been able to duplicate the problem. I had this same issue several
months
ago but, it had to do with using an adaptor to make a USB keyboard work
on a
PS2 computer. I know I'm not being much help but, these weird
occurrences
like the both of yours intrigue me. Take care.

  Dear Listers,

I tend to differ with the suggestions made, although I unfortunately
don't have a solution, but I'm experiencing the same annoying issue,
although the delay is not such that I can't live with it,
approximately
two seconds, on a brand new quad cor processor pc with four gig of
ram,
  under
windows 7 64 bit, with only nod32 and outlook running, with almost a
terabyte free memory on the hard drive, while on my notebook, running
the same version, latest of jaws, also with 4 gig ram but only a duel
cor processor, also windows 7 64 bit, running only outlook and Nod32,
with five times less memory on the hard drive left, it's more than a
  second faster.

  Regards,

  Riana

Are you using the Eloquence speech syntizizes, that are followed with Jaws?

Do you probably have tryed some of the free Real speak solo direct

Increase the amount of physical ram installed on your system.

reduce the number of programs open simultaneously and running in the
background (a look in your system tray and in msconfig gives you
infomration on some of the background processes as does a look in task
manager)

practice general good computer maintenance as in running chkdsk and defrag
on a regular basis. How often you need to defrag also depends on what you
do on your computer. If you do a lot of copying and deleting, you need to
defrag more often.

Maybe use a memory manager/memory defrag program though some will argue on
the usefulness of such a utility. I use Freeram XP Pro, a free memory
manager utility. YOu will need to google for its homepage

If available, use a hardware synthesizer such as aDECTAlk express or
Accent external. Many of these can be had used for cheap these days as
they require a legacy serial port on the computer used. Many will work
fine on a usb to serial adapter or you can put an expansion card into your
computer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to decrease time for JAWS to respond

2011-07-09 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hi,

I have been listening to the advice given for this problem and would like
to throw in my 2 cents worth.

While check disk and adding more ram are certainly good for almost any
computer, because the problem is being experienced on both her laptop and
desktop computer, suggests that it is a program that she has running on both
computers or a configuration setting shared by each system that is causing
the problem.

The first place I would suggest to look at is the task bar. Look at the task
bar and see if:

a. How many programs are listed
b. Which programs ( if any ) are running on each system.

The next place to check is the startup folder >startmenu>programs>startup
and see what programs are starting for each computer.

Once you have narrowed the programs that are running on both systems, you
will be able to disable each program in turn to see if you get any relief
from the slowness of Jaws.

Another culprit might be your anti virus program or the windows indexing
program.

Again, adding ram and def ragging are valid steps, but because of the
problem being on two different systems, used by the same person, suggests a
program that is running on both systems or a configuration setting that has
been applied to each system.

HTH,

TJ

Do you have this key echo delay with other screen readers like NVDA and

If I did, do you think I should set it for zero?

Thanks very much! Vicky

Hi Vicky,

Have you tried unloading Jaws & reloading it? Or, have you tried
rebooting

the computers to see if this helps? Take care.

Hi folks, I'm using Jaws 11 on a laptop and desktop both using Windows
XP.

On both of them, I can wait several seconds after I have pressed a key,
before Jaws either echoes it or responds to it.

Do any of you have any ideas as to how I can decrease the wait?

Many thanks for any suggestions! Vicky

Thanks Doris! I will start implementing your suggestions. It sure will be
nice to have a snappy response from JAWS.

Many will work
fine on a usb to serial adapter or you can put an expansion card into your
computer.

Hi Riana & Vicky,

Were your computers working fine & then all of sudden the computer started
reacting really slow in responding to the keyboard commands? I have played
around with Keyboard & Accessibility Options in the control panel & haven't
been able to duplicate the problem. I had this same issue several months
ago but, it had to do with using an adaptor to make a USB keyboard work on a
PS2 computer. I know I'm not being much help but, these weird occurrences
like the both of yours intrigue me. Take care.

  Dear Listers,

I tend to differ with the suggestions made, although I unfortunately
don't have a solution, but I'm experiencing the same annoying issue,
although the delay is not such that I can't live with it, approximately
two seconds, on a brand new quad cor processor pc with four gig of ram,
  under
windows 7 64 bit, with only nod32 and outlook running, with almost a
terabyte free memory on the hard drive, while on my notebook, running
the same version, latest of jaws, also with 4 gig ram but only a duel
cor processor, also windows 7 64 bit, running only outlook and Nod32,
with five times less memory on the hard drive left, it's more than a
  second faster.

  Regards,

  Riana

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to decrease time for JAWS to respond

2011-07-07 Thread Trouble

Do a scanDisk on both.
Just go to desk top, myComputer, hit enter. Now on the local drive
hit application key and chose properties...
Then do a control + tab and hit enter. Tab to fix drive and check.
Then ok your way out.

When you reboot it will do that job.
after that is done. Run defrag on the system, and disk clean up. You
can find that in accessories, system tools, disk clean up.

If you have a registry cleaner run it also.
Now your all clean.
Do a insert + f11, and see just what all is running.
For some you may have to go into control panel, task bar and startup
menu. Just un check hide icons and they will show all.
Stop all that don't need to run and then shut computer off and once
off restart it.
That will purge the memory and come up clean. Where a reboot will
still keep junk around.
