Hi Walter,

I've been using Avast for several years already but I have not
experienced what you had experienced. I am using Jaws 14 and the latest
Avast free version, so far so good.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Avast, incompatible?

2013-12-04 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. I think Avast is a good programme but for me, it proved problematic. I
do use my computer to a great extent every day and work quickly but since it
has been uninstalled the computer has worked much more efficiently. The
problem may be a binary problem as a third programme maybe the catalyst.
Alternatively the Paid version may be better; I was using the free version.
Whatever the cause it has proved to be an enigma and It may be time to try
something different. I guess at the end of the day I could use one computer
for my main work of file management and not on line where I wouldn't need
virus protection and another for browsing and emails where the usage
wouldn't be so heavy. Walter.

Hi. That's the question I've been asking myself. I've decided that Spybot
might be the best way as it works in the background and I've had no trouble
with it. The down side is to get the anti-virus version you have to
purchase it but it isn't expensive for a one year licence. I am on this PC
from morning until night, often 17 or 18 hours a day with breaks for meals
etc so that might be why Avast proved problematic for me. For average usage
it might be fine. Walter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Avast, incompatible?

2013-12-03 Thread Gerald Levy

Before you install Spybot anti-virus, you might want to get feedback from
other list members who have used it successfully with JAWS. A few years
ago, I tried Spybot Search and Destroy anti-spyware, and although it was
compatible with JAWS, I found it to be a resource hog that returned too many
false positives. I haven't heard anything about Spybot anti-virus, so I
don't know how it compares with Avast, AVG or MSE as far as anti-virus
protection is concerned. I have never seen any comments about this
program's accessibility with JAWS on this or other lists, so proceed with
caution. The last thing you need is another malware program that will cause
you frustration and aggravation. If worst comes to worst, you can always
install Microsoft Security Essentials. Although it has been criticized
recently for not providing the best protection against malware threats, at
least it is completely JAWS accessible and won't cause computer crashes or
freeze-ups.

At this moment I have no anti-virus but I'm going to install Spybot as
they

now also have an anti-virus version but you must pay for that. Has anyone
else had a similar problem with Avast? Walter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Avast, incompatible?

2013-12-03 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. Yes, they probably made that recommendation because essentials is
accessible but that doesn't mean it is reliable and secure. I guess though
it depends on what one is doing with their computer. If one is just sending
and receiving the odd email then that might be OK but if an individual is
adventurous and is into downloading etc then I would think I would prefer
something a bit more powerful than essentials. Walter.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Avast, incompatible?

Hi Folks. A few years ago I had my PC reformatted and Avast was installed
as my anti-virus. This caused quite a number of problems with Jaws not
performing properly and my computer not functioning as it should. Avast was
removed and AVG was installed and things then worked fine. I subsequently
bought a new computer and as AVG wasn't as good as it once was; it became
increasingly less accessible I thought with newer versions of Jaws that
perhaps Avast would be fine now. Well this has not proved to be the case of
late. With Jaws 14 and Jaws 15 every now and then I would lose speech and
could not re-launch it, at times I had to restart the PC. This would happen
at random times without a pattern and it became irritating. When my speech
failed I couldn't even launch NVDA to inquire of what might be the problem.
This would happen when backing out of folders or when going back to a
previous web page. I used to use the backspace for this command but this
problem occurred much too often. I then started to use the alt/left arrow
to back out of folders and move backwards on web pages and that helped to a
limited degree as it happened less often, but it still happened too
frequently. Avast has now been uninstalled and my PC is working like a
dream, so fast reacting and I can work at speed with confidence that the
computer and Jaws will keep up and not have a seizure. I have come to the
conclusion that Avast and Jaws are not really on good terms. I can't speak
for other screen readers but I know there is a problem with Jaws and Avast.
At this moment I have no anti-virus but I'm going to install Spybot as they
now also have an anti-virus version but you must pay for that. Has anyone

2013-12-03 Thread Gerald Levy

Before you go ahead and install Spybot Anti-Virus and throw away your money,
read the review of it from PC magazine, the link for which is below. In
short, Spybot was found to be almost totally ineffective at detecting
against malware threats, which means that it may be even less reliable than
MSE. If you are looking for a paid anti-virus program that is compatible
with JAWS and provides reasonably good protection, consider ESET NOD32 or
Sunbelt Vipre.

Unfortunately Essentials has developed a bad reputation as Microsoft seem to
be letting it wither on the vine. It might be fine for an emergency
fal-back but I wouldn't use it as my main protection. Walter.
