Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
The "link to previous" button that unlinks sections is in the Navigation group of the Design tab when you're in the footer field. It's straight after "previous" and "next" in the tab sequence. JAWS reads it correctly and indicates whether it is checked. I think you probably have corrupt files somewhere on your system, or an outdated version of Microsoft Word 2016. If you don't have any luck in tracking down the issue, try contacting whoever can provide you with either Microsoft technical support or JAWS technical support. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Brian, Yes, I renamed the normal.dotm template, and also did a repair on Office 365. I tried changing the footer style, but it wouldn't accept a change that way from within the edit field of the style. I was able to change its font size, so changes can be made, though. You guys have given me excellent advice, but so far I haven't been able to resolve this. The good thing is that it works for you, so hopefully I can fix this. I will get a sighted person to look at the screen as well, just in case. Possibly, it might be an Office Word 365 thing as well. I'll keep trying things. Thanks. However, you have Office 365 and I am not sure if you have the ability to work with those files in that version of Word or not but you probably know whether or not you do. In Word 2013 you go under the user folder, open App Data, open Roaming, open Microsoft, and open templates to find the normal.dotm file. This would at least let you know if the problem was with the styles. Again, though, I don't know if this should be done in an Office 365 installation. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Jean, JAWS should be letting you know that the colors are black on white and not black on black for the footer style. At least with my installation of word the footer style is pretty much the same as the normal style. Being that this has happened when you use JAWS 17 and JAWS 18, it would appear that something might be corrupt with the Word installation. What you might try for a workaround is to select the footer area and apply the normal style by using CTRL+Shift+N. See if you can read the text when the normal style is used in the footer. In either case, JAWS should be reporting the foreground and background colors as black on white when using JAWS key F or when using JAWS key 5. You might also create your own style and then when you move to the footer area and unlink the footer from the previous one, you can select from the beginning to the end of the line and apply your created style. The new style could be called something like "MyFooter." I think you said in another message that JAWS wouldn't read the text when using JAWS 17 and 18 and that you didn't merge any of the settings. Try refreshing the screen using JAWS key with escape key and maximizing the window before typing or reading the text. Sure hope you get it working! Take care. Hi Brian, Excellent description, and I know that's how it should work. But no matter what I do, I can't read any of the text I'm entering, have entered, or am wanting to edit. Insert-F tells me the footer style text is black on black. That shouldn't matter, I don't think. I didn't import any old Jaws settings when I upgraded to version 18. I just can't find why this isn't working. I also don't see the choices to unlink from previous sections with section breaks, etc. Very strange. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Jason, I have now upgraded to Jaws 18, but I am not getting the results you get. I can get to the footer area in both ways as you describe. Once in the footer edit area, text is not spoken as I type, and nothing is readable in the field. Then if I exit the footer dialogue and use insert-F1, I know that footer text was entered. Going back in to edit, I again cannot hear anything in terms of what the footer text is. I also can't seem to find ribbon controls for adding date, time, etc. On this same topic, can you go under Layout and insert a section break and see if you can unlink it from other document sections? I can't identify the button to do that either. The good thing is that you can do this. I just have to figure out why I can't. I'm using Office 365, if that might be different. Jean, for the record, I don't mean to suggest there's any fault involved in keeping up-to-date with applications. Your points are well taken. I'd pursue this philosophical quandary for people with disabilities further, but it wouldn't be helpful in solving JAWS problems. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jean Menzies Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2016 6:18 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers Hi Justin. Ah, but not keeping up is the same as going backwards. At least that's how I see it. Why should we be relegated to the end of the line for modern software that has been out for quite some time and that other piers are using just to say we have something accessible? It makes me wonder why they continually release product without ensuring it has at least the functionality as its predecessor. I still hold by my comment that as long as they account for that lowest common ddenominator, that it's often viewed as good enough to go out the door. Thank goodness I'm not actually relying on this functionality for employment. -Original Message- From: Adrian Spratt Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2016 1:59 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers Jean, In fairness, didn't you say you used to be able to handle footers in previous versions of Word? Still, JAWS is far from perfect, and it's maddening when what worked in one version of JAWS or in a program it used to support suddenly doesn't. this is why those of us who keep up with JAWS but don't go out and buy the latest version of every other application can get annoyingly smug. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jean Menzies Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2016 4:06 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers Hi Adrian, Thanks for the idea. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
I tried Jaws 16 as well, but I had the same problems. I'm using Windows 10, so I can't go to anything less than 16 for Jaws. Feeling very frustrated, as I know how to make this a nice visual document, but I can't get it done with reliable accuracy. Makes me look like the one with less than par word processing skills. And, for the record, NVDA doesn't handle this well either. So much for job access.
