Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers

2016-11-25 Thread Jason White
The "link to previous" button that unlinks sections is in the Navigation group
of the Design tab when you're in the footer field. It's straight after
"previous" and "next" in the tab sequence. JAWS reads it correctly and
indicates whether it is checked.

I think you probably have corrupt files somewhere on your system, or an
outdated version of Microsoft Word 2016. If you don't have any luck in
tracking down the issue, try contacting whoever can provide you with either
Microsoft technical support or JAWS technical support.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers

2016-11-24 Thread Jean Menzies

Hi Brian,

Yes, I renamed the normal.dotm template, and also did a repair on Office
365. I tried changing the footer style, but it wouldn't accept a change that
way from within the edit field of the style. I was able to change its font
size, so changes can be made, though.

You guys have given me excellent advice, but so far I haven't been able to
resolve this. The good thing is that it works for you, so hopefully I can
fix this. I will get a sighted person to look at the screen as well, just in
case. Possibly, it might be an Office Word 365 thing as well.

I'll keep trying things.

Thanks.

Jean

Hello again Jean,

Another thought is that if some of the styles are messed up, they are based
on the normal template. You could rename the normal.dotm file and restart
Word. The normal.dotm template should be created by Word and this might
cause the styles to work correctly. However, you have Office 365 and I am
not sure if you have the ability to work with those files in that version of
Word or not but you probably know whether or not you do. In Word 2013 you
go under the user folder, open App Data, open Roaming, open Microsoft, and
open templates to find the normal.dotm file. This would at least let you
know if the problem was with the styles. Again, though, I don't know if
this should be done in an Office 365 installation.

Take care.

Hello,

Here is some additional information on creating footers. I am using Word
2013 but I don't think the steps vary much from 2016.

Instead of using the dialog box you might want to use the options in the
header and footer group of the insert menu and under the design tab which is
added as a tab to the right end of the ribbon after a footer is chosen. To
enter a built-in footer you can use CTRL with right arrow key across the
lower part of the ribbon under the insert tab until you get to the header
and footer group. Using Word 2013, this is done seven times. Tab to the
footer menu item and press enter. Alternatively, use Alt followed by N
followed by O. The first item is a blank footer and the second built-in
footer type is a footer with three areas. If you pick the second one you
can enter the footer text in the first area and the page number in the third
and use different alignment for the text and page number if you want. If
you choose the first built-in footer type you can type the text using
nonbreaking spaces between all the words (CTRL+Shift+Spacebar) and then
leave a space before entering the page number. Immediately after inserting
the page number use CTRL with J followed by shift key and enter. This will
cause the text to be left aligned and the page number to be right aligned.
If you want to insert a page number using a page field use Alt with Shift
and P. Otherwise, you can insert it from the page numbers item under the
design tab of the ribbon. You will find the “Link to previous”, “different
first page” and other often used options under the design tab. It is a good
idea to use section breaks and then insert the blank footer for the new
section, uncheck the “link to previous” checkbox under the design tab of the
header and footer tools which is added to the right end of the ribbon as a
contextual tab, and then type the footer information

Hi Jean,

JAWS should be letting you know that the colors are black on white and not
black on black for the footer style. At least with my installation of word the
footer style is pretty much the same as the normal style. Being that this has
happened when you use JAWS 17 and JAWS 18, it would appear that something might
be corrupt with the Word installation. What you might try for a workaround is
to select the footer area and apply the normal style by using CTRL+Shift+N.
See if you can read the text when the normal style is used in the footer. In
either case, JAWS should be reporting the foreground and background colors as
black on white when using JAWS key F or when using JAWS key 5. You might also
create your own style and then when you move to the footer area and unlink the
footer from the previous one, you can select from the beginning to the end of
the line and apply your created style. The new style could be called something
like "MyFooter." I think you said in another message that JAWS wouldn't read
the text when using JAWS 17 and 18 and that you didn't merge any of the
settings. Try refreshing the screen using JAWS key with escape key and
maximizing the window before typing or reading the text. Sure hope you get it
working!

Take care.

Hi all,

Some small progress. I have found that if the Jaws virtual ribbon is
enabled, I can't access any of the Footer ribbons. So, with it off, I can at
least tab through the design choices, finding the areas for unlinking, etc.

But I still can't read any of the entered text until I exit the Footer style
and go back to the document. Any ideas?

Hello,

Here is some additional information on creating footers. I am using Word

Instead of using the dialog box you might want to use the options in the

footer menu item and press enter. Alternatively, use Alt followed by N

footer type is a footer with three areas. If you pick the second one you
can enter the footer text in the first area and the page number in the third
and use different alignment for the text and page number if you want. If

Hi Jason,

I have now upgraded to Jaws 18, but I am not getting the results you get. I
can get to the footer area in both ways as you describe. Once in the footer
edit area, text is not spoken as I type, and nothing is readable in the
field.

Then if I exit the footer dialogue and use insert-F1, I know that footer
text was entered. Going back in to edit, I again cannot hear anything in
terms of what the footer text is.

I also can't seem to find ribbon controls for adding date, time, etc.

On this same topic, can you go under Layout and insert a section break and
see if you can unlink it from other document sections? I can't identify the
button to do that either.

The good thing is that you can do this. I just have to figure out why I
can't.

I'm using Office 365, if that might be different.

Jean,

In fairness, didn't you say you used to be able to handle footers in previous
versions of Word? So maybe it isn't so much that JAWS went backwards, but that
it hasn't kept up with Office 2016. Also, you indicated you're using JAWS 17.
Maybe 18 has caught up.

Of course, having to keep up-to-date with JAWS via SMA is an added biennial
expense, but I find that FS makes improvements beyond those it publicizes,
perhaps because as it fixes one way of interacting with applications and the
Internet, other nagging problems go away.

Still, JAWS is far from perfect, and it's maddening when what worked in one
version of JAWS or in a program it used to support suddenly doesn't. this is
why those of us who keep up with JAWS but don't go out and buy the latest
version of every other application can get annoyingly smug.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for the idea. However, I have changed my plan for this project because
the workarounds I have are just too prone too error. I wanted to compile
recipes with each section being a new recipe. Then, have a footer for each
recipe, plus, if the recipe went to more than one page, a continuation footer
for that recipe. Page numbers continuous. Plus a front section of Roman page
numbers with a generated table of contents.

Honestly, I find so much that Jaws isn't reading in the various dialogues to do
this. I am struggling with section breaks, page numbering, and especially the
footers. So many steps backward in accessibility in my humble opinion.
And I'm supposed to pay for a Jaws upgrade SMA now. Just wondering why. How
many more things can they screw up or not keep up with? It always seems that
once past the basics, accessibility is somewhat lacking.

Sorry everyone for the vent, but I hate dumbing something down just to make it
work. I used to be able to do all of this with no problem. Now, not so much.

Jean,

In fairness, didn't you say you used to be able to handle footers in
previous versions of Word? So maybe it isn't so much that JAWS went
backwards, but that it hasn't kept up with Office 2016. Also, you indicated
you're using JAWS 17.

However, I have changed my plan for this project
because the workarounds I have are just too prone too error. I wanted to
compile recipes with each section being a new recipe. Then, have a footer
for each recipe, plus, if the recipe went to more than one page, a
continuation footer for that recipe. Page numbers continuous. Plus a front
section of Roman page numbers with a generated table of contents.

Honestly, I find so much that Jaws isn't reading in the various dialogues to
do this. I am struggling with section breaks, page numbering, and especially
the footers. So many steps backward in accessibility in my humble opinion.
And I'm supposed to pay for a Jaws upgrade SMA now. Just wondering why. How
many more things can they screw up or not keep up with? It always seems that
once past the basics, accessibility is somewhat lacking.

Sorry everyone for the vent, but I hate dumbing something down just to make
it work. I used to be able to do all of this with no problem. Now, not so
much.

Hi, Jean.

I notice that no MS Word 2016 user has responded. As a 2010 user, where I
know footers worked fine for you, I can offer only the suggestion that you
type the text you want to appear in the footer in a separate document and
paste it into the footer field. Hardly elegant, but it might be a

I’m using Word 2016 and Jaws 17.0.2619.

I want to create documents with page footers. Each page needs its own unique
footer. I know how to get to the footer dialogue, but Jaws doesn’t read any
of the text in the dialogue as I type or as it appears. Outside of the
dialogue, I can use insert F1 to hear document info, but this is a tedious
way to check footers, and doesn’t allow for editing, etc.

Is there a solution for this? It used to work in previous versions of Word
and Jaws.

Ah, but not keeping up is the same as going backwards. At least that's how
I see it. Why should we be relegated to the end of the line for modern
software that has been out for quite some time and that other piers are
using just to say we have something accessible? It makes me wonder why they
continually release product without ensuring it has at least the
functionality as its predecessor. I still hold by my comment that as long as
they account for that lowest common ddenominator, that it's often viewed as
good enough to go out the door.

Thank goodness I'm not actually relying on this functionality for
employment.

many more things can they screw up or not keep up with? It always seems that
once past the basics, accessibility is somewhat lacking.

Sorry everyone for the vent, but I hate dumbing something down just to make it
work. I used to be able to do all of this with no problem. Now, not so much.

Hi, Jean.

I notice that no MS Word 2016 user has responded. As a 2010 user, where I know
footers worked fine for you, I can offer only the suggestion that you type the
text you want to appear in the footer in a separate document and paste it into
the footer field. Hardly elegant, but it might be a workaround.

I’m using Word 2016 and Jaws 17.0.2619.

I want to create documents with page footers. Each page needs its own unique
footer. I know how to get to the footer dialogue, but Jaws doesn’t read any of
the text in the dialogue as I type or as it appears. Outside of the dialogue, I
can use insert F1 to hear document info, but this is a tedious way to check
footers, and doesn’t allow for editing, etc.

Is there a solution for this? It used to work in previous versions of Word and
Jaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers

2016-11-22 Thread Jean Menzies

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for the idea.
