Open your Documents folder. If the folders and files are in reverse order, reach up and press the f6 key. It should say Name. If it does, press enter and your folders should be sorted properly again. If when you press the f6 key, it says Date Press the left arrow key and it should say Name. Press enter as above. If you should want your folders, or files within a folder, sorted by date, Press the f6 key and when it says Name right arrow to date And press enter. The newest files will be on top of the list. If you want the oldest on top, Press the f6 key and when it says Date Press enter and the files will reverse their order. If the problem is only within certain folders in your documents, or if you want to configure certain files differently, then just open the folder you want to rearrange and follow the steps above. I have my Documents folder sorted by name, but many of the files within the individual folders I have sorted by date. HTH. Re: [JAWS-Users] arranging files in alphabetical order
This method would have worked beautifully if the key stroke had worked. The problem was that pressing the space bar wouldn't check what I wanted. Luckily, I could turn off Magic, get to what I wanted to do, and then have a sighted person check ascending with the mouse, and now everything is fine. My problem now is that there are a few things that my computer isn't doing properly and I need to find a sighted computer person to look at the hardware, I think. Also, if you go back in and press enter again on name, or on date, the order will reverse. This is a quick way to change something on the fly, especially if you want it sorted by date, and you are looking for something either very recent or very old. If you want something in ascending order, make sure that item is checked, which I think it is by default. As usual, Microsoft has given us multiple ways to do the same thing. I find the function key quicker, but the context menu key works great too. Hi Miriam, When you are in a menu, such as the view menu, you don't use the spacebar to check or uncheck an item, you simply press enter to activate that item. Re: [JAWS-Users] arranging files in alphabetical order
Miriam, Okay, yet another method, one that always works for me without sighted assistance on my Windows 7 computer. 1. First, make sure nothing is "selected" in the list you want to alphabetize. If JAWS says the item in focus is selected, press control-spacebar to unselect it. 2. Press the applications key, between the right-hand Windows and control keys. 3. Arrow down to "Sort by..." Press enter. 4. On my system, the first item that comes up is "Name." If this isn't checked, press the spacebar. Now, if that doesn't solve the problem, repeat steps 1 through 3 again and press enter on "sort by." Now arrow down to "Ascending." On my system, either "Ascending" or "descending" can be checked. I have "ascending" checked and "descending" unchecked. No need for sighted assistance to confirm. I hope this one works for you. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List <jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com> On Behalf Of Miriam Vieni Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2018 4:46 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] arranging files in alphabetical order That worked, but I couldn't check ascending with the space bar. Re: [JAWS-Users] arranging files in alphabetical order
Miriam, It's been a while since I've used Windows 7, but this should work for you there as well as it does for Windows 10.
This hasn't worked for me. If I shift tab, I get to a tree few where I can open or close things. But I can't change the order from a to z in the documents folder or the sub folders within it.
