Hi Al,
One reason is because if you are running a program in demo version, the quick
start will not set the timer back so you can use for another 40 minutes.
Another reason, is the quick start is why people are not hearing a sound when
they shut their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick start does not
shut the computer totally down, so it is not the same as a complete shut down.
I do not like the quick start for all of these reasons.

For my two machines there is about one second difference on
the SSD boot drive on the machine running 16 GB Ram and an
SSD boot drive. There is about a ten second difference on
the 8 GB machine with a 5400 RPM boot drive. The only time
quick start comes into play for me is when I am having
issues with Jaws or office or windows itself. Sometimes I
need to reboot and the reboot does not work as it should
because of the fast start being enabled. There are times
when you will find that you need to restart and having this
option enabled will complicate whatever you are
troubleshooting.
Sometimes you just need a clean reboot.
I actually have more issues with starting up while having a
pair of large external drives connected slowing down my
restart or cold startup than having this option enabled or
disabled. Because I have the option to scan external drives
enabled in my antivirus application, it will sometimes slow
down my startup or restart. If I unplug everything from the
machine before starting or restarting I can be up and
running in seconds no matter if the option is checked or not
checked. But if I need to troubleshoot or install something
I personally want that option to not be checked. Just my own
personal preference.

Hi sir,
I wasn't advocating for or against it one way or another. I've run with it
enabled and disabled at different times.

I don't have a horse in this race (smile).
I was just trying to clarify the point as one of the earlier posters made it
seem as though one needed to turn off the use a password option in the mix
with all of this and I didn't think that was correct. pardon my paraphrase
of its actual control name. I wrote this on the fly and didn't stop long
enough to get the exact wording.

I hope that makes more sense. Sorry for furthering confusion on the matter.

Hi Robin,
Again, there is no advantage to turning quick start off.
This is a benefit of using w-10.
For all practical purposes your computer is shut down, when
choosing shut down.
I have done this from the beginning every day when I am done
using the computer, I use shut down.
In the morning I just press the power button, in about 10
seconds or less, my computer comes on with Jaws talking.
I then press the 4 digit pin, in a few seconds I am on the
desktop.
So, I don't understand all the fuss about turning it off.
I am a big security minded person.
So, anything beyond my anti-virus, that helps protect my
computer is welcome.
Good luck, just my opinion.

Hi Al,
One reason is because if you are running a program in demo
version, the quick start will not set the timer back so you
can use for another 40 minutes. Another reason, is the quick
start is why people are not hearing a sound when they shut
their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick start
does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the
same as a complete shut down. I do not like the quick start
for all of these reasons.
Have a great one, Al.

2015-12-29 Thread Merv Keck
For my two machines there is about one second difference on the SSD boot
drive on the machine running 16 GB Ram and an SSD boot drive. There is
about a ten second difference on the 8 GB machine with a 5400 RPM boot
drive. The only time quick start comes into play for me is when I am having
issues with Jaws or office or windows itself. Sometimes I need to reboot and
the reboot does not work as it should because of the fast start being
enabled. There are times when you will find that you need to restart and
having this option enabled will complicate whatever you are troubleshooting.
Sometimes you just need a clean reboot.
I actually have more issues with starting up while having a pair of large
external drives connected slowing down my restart or cold startup than
having this option enabled or disabled. Because I have the option to scan
external drives enabled in my antivirus application, it will sometimes slow
down my startup or restart. If I unplug everything from the machine before
starting or restarting I can be up and running in seconds no matter if the
option is checked or not checked. But if I need to troubleshoot or install
something I personally want that option to not be checked. Just my own
personal preference.

Hello Gang:

I have a windows 10 laptop that has been working fine for

almost two

months. Yesterday, right after jaws came up, I heard a

question

similar to:

"Hello, how do you like this picture. We will be sending

you more, et

cetra." Even though I do not sign in with a password, I

was able to

find the sign in button, and struck the space bar.

However, the

computer crashed. as in shut down. I thought it was

automatically

re-starting, for some unknown reason. Did a forced

re-start. Heard

similar info. Found sign in button.
Space bar. Computer shut down.

One of the times, I heard something about starting in the

locked mode.

Now, the computer starts normally, as it pertains to the

sound and

humming.
However, there is no sound. Not even the windows start up

sound. The

computer automatically shuts down in about a minute and

half, after I

press the start button.

Without sighted help how do I get it to start in safe

mode? Since

narrator has been so good in windows 10, will it allow me

to do a

system restore?

Sighted help might arrive, sometime tomorrow. But, I was

just

wondering if I could do it using jaws and narrator.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas. He is The Reason for the

season.

Hi Al,
One reason is because if you are running a program in demo version, the
quick start will not set the timer back so you can use for another 40
minutes. Another reason, is the quick start is why people are not hearing a
sound when they shut their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick
start does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the same as a
complete shut down. I do not like the quick start for all of these reasons.
Have a great one, Al.

Re: [JAWS-Users] disable quick start in win 10

2015-12-29 Thread jim

Hi David,
I disagree, a person should leave quick start alone.
This is one of the benefits of w-10, a quick start.
When you shut your computer down, for all practical purposes it is shut
down.

Yes, it is in a stand by mode, but all things are shut down.
So, when a person presses the power button on the computer, it powers up in
seconds.
As far as the windows sounds, they will work on restart, because you are
restarting the computer.
When you do a shut down and a start up, you are starting out freshly, but
you will not hear the windows sounds because you are quickly waking up the
computer, henceforth the term quick start.

I don't know a lot of people who use demo programs on a consistent bases.
In my opinion, I would leave quick start alone.
Just my two cents worth on the subject.

Love God! with your heart, mind, and soul, that you might be blessed
reaching His goal.
Love your Neighbor as you would yourself, God will truly reward you with
good health.
Love God, your neighbor, as you love yourself, you will then be spiritually
balanced with wealth.
Love His Word that proceeds from His lips, then reflect on the heavens where
God sits.

Hi Robin,
Again, there is no advantage to turning quick start off.
This is a benefit of using w-10.
For all practical purposes your computer is shut down, when choosing shut
down.
I have done this from the beginning every day when I am done using the
computer, I use shut down.
In the morning I just press the power button, in about 10 seconds or less,
my computer comes on with Jaws talking.

I then press the 4 digit pin, in a few seconds I am on the desktop.
So, I don't understand all the fuss about turning it off.
I am a big security minded person.
So, anything beyond my anti-virus, that helps protect my computer is
welcome.

Good luck, just my opinion.

Love God! with your heart, mind, and soul, that you might be blessed

Hi,
Forgive me for jumping in on this thread but Kevin's instructions say you
have to turn off requiring a password to disable this. I didn't think you
needed to do that. can someone clarify as I wouldn't want to disseminate
erroneous information but I truly didn't remember having to have done that
as I'm still logging into windows with a pin and my machines are still set
to require one but I did disable fast startup myself.
thanks bunches for clarifying.

question

similar to:

"Hello, how do you like this picture. We will be sending

you more, et

cetra." Even though I do not sign in with a password, I

was able to

find the sign in button, and struck the space bar.

However, the

computer crashed. as in shut down. I thought it was

automatically

re-starting, for some unknown reason. Did a forced

re-start. Heard

similar info. Found sign in button.
Space bar. Computer shut down.

One of the times, I heard something about starting in the

locked mode.

Now, the computer starts normally, as it pertains to the

sound and

humming.
However, there is no sound. Not even the windows start up

sound. The

computer automatically shuts down in about a minute and

half, after I

press the start button.

Without sighted help how do I get it to start in safe

mode? Since

narrator has been so good in windows 10, will it allow me

to do a

system restore?

Sighted help might arrive, sometime tomorrow. But, I was

just

wondering if I could do it using jaws and narrator.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas. He is The Reason for the

season.

Hi,
Forgive me for jumping in on this thread but Kevin's instructions say you
have to turn off requiring a password to disable this.

Hi Al,
One reason is because if you are running a program in demo version, the
quick start will not set the timer back so you can use for another 40
minutes. Another reason, is the quick start is why people are not hearing a
sound when they shut their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the
quick start does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the same
as a complete shut down. I do not like the quick start for all of these
reasons. Have a great one, Al.

I don't have windows 10, but from most of the posts/replies I've read,
it appears to be equated to the hybernation mode which, correct me if
I'm wrong, was a troublesome mode for JAWS users.
