[JAWS-Users] in the market for a new laptop

2012-01-14 Thread Kathy Pingstock
Good morning,

I am using the latest Jjaws. Different are telling me to go with the 64 bit
laptops, that 32 are fading out. Will the standard jaws work with the 64 bit
laptops. What is the difference between 32 or 64 bit units.

Hi Kathy.

I certainly would not go with 64bit. The amount of complaints we've had
about it! a friend of mine runs a PC repair business and people find it
a lot more convenient to downgrade to 32bit. the reality is that if your
pc only has 4GB or less of memory, 32bit windows is fine. if it has 4GB
or more, then they recommend 64bit but in reality 32bit can work on
windows with up to 16GB of ram using PAE or physical address extention
technology. this probably isn't the place to discuss 32bit verses 64bit,
but i've a feeling that you're paying extra for jaws 64bit, i haven't
checked out the latest prices but i do know that there are separate
versions of jaws for 32bit systems and 64bit systems.

I hope that helps, feel free to write me off list if you need more

Here's the thing though, if she buys one, there's no choise as far as I
know, all of them are 64 bit now, you can't get 32 bit any more. I mean,
when you customize one on dell.com, there's no 32 bit option anymore. You
can try and get a 32 bit one if you want, but one point, like was said here,
if the laptop only has really 3 gigs of mememory, than that's fine. Yep, it
doesn't see that fourth gig. If you want to use all 4 gigs, you'll need to
go 64 bit. As far as I know, JAWS is JAWS no mater what version you get. I
don't think they caost any more or less then each other. In fact, they
shouldn't, they both come on the same DVD and it just depends what operating
system you load it on on which one loads.

Cathy, FS does not charge more for a 64 bit version of Jaws. However, they
do charge for Jaws professional, and you May and I say may have to get that
version of jaws with windows 7, but I'm not too sure of that. Call FS at, 1,
800, 444/4443, and the guys in sales can tell you. But they do not charge
more for a 64 bit version of jaws. Jim

There is no difference in cost for JAWS 32 or 64-bit. They both come on the
disk and your computer will install the correct one automatically. If you
download JAWS from the website, you must choose the correct one. Just be
careful about the version of Windows you get as some of them require the
more expensive version of JAWS. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and it does
not require the more expensive version of JAWS.

2012-01-14 Thread Doris and Chris
There are indeed different versions of jaws for 32bit and 64bit
windows but the price is the same. Different prices make a difference
not with 32bit or 64bit but with which version of the operating
system is being used, i.e. whehter jaws standard (for home) or
professional systems is required. These exist in both 32bit and 64bit flavors.

I am still on xp myself but I think I heard that the highest
version of win 7 that will work wiht the standard license of jaws is
Home premium. this is to be taken into account when buying the
computer with an operating system preinstalled. For most users, the
Home Premium version of windows should be all they ever need.

As for a hardware suggestion for a laptop, Chris and I both bought
Asus laptops that were affordable and which are very rugged and come
with a full-sized keyboard including numpad. We bought ours without
operating system and are running xp on them each but they came with 2
gigs of RAM (expandable to 4 gigs) and are capable of running win 7
in both 32bit or 64bit.

OK I will attempt to clear up this debate over 32 bit and 64 bit systems.
JAWS will work with either operating system as it offers a separate version
at no extra cost. The only cost variable is home verses pro.

So if you have a license for JAWS home then it will work with all 32 or 64
bit Windows operating systems so long as they are home versions. If you are
authorized for JAWS pro then you can use any version of Windows no matter
bit or type.

it is the way of the future however, I had to stay with 32 bit because of
some driver issues. Not too long ago I had some problems and went back to
the shop that built my system. I was going to have 64 installed and was
talked out of it because of the driver issues. My wife has a
dyesublimitation printer that there are no 64 bit drivers. Since jaws works
with both 64 and 32 bit this made it easy for me. I can easily go the 64
bit way in the future. the ms authorization is for both operating systems.
The shop would just burn me a 64 bit install and there would be no
additional charge. They only recommend 64 if you are purchasing all new
hardware, printers etc. or using more than 3 gb of memory for some heavy
games.

Re: [JAWS-Users] in the market for a new laptop

2012-01-14 Thread Steve

Kathy,

Well, if you mean the Standard Jaws the home version, then it will work with
Win 7 Home Premium. You need the Pro version of Jaws to work with Win 7
Professional or Ultimate.

As far as 32 or 64-bit versions, you will need to download the 64-bit
version from the internet, or if you have a Jaws 11 or higher DVD, it will
recognize whether you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the operating
system and install the correct version of Jaws automatically.

In most cases, 32-bit programs will work on a 64-bit system, they are
installed in the Programs86 folder. However, since screen readers are so
intertwined and married to the operating system, both Win-Eyes and Jaws
require that you run the appropriate version with the operating system, i.e.
32-bit Jaws with a 32-bit OS or 64-bit Jaws with a 64-bit OS.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Well incase your PC friend didn't know. You can not buy a true 32bit
computer now. From dual core on up they are all 64 bit computers.
Now you can run a 32bit op or a 64 bit op. That is about the only
choice you have to make there.
If you do find a true 32 bit system with a p4 CPU. About the only
thing you will find with it is the lack of parts for it, because its
out dated and hardly anyone carries them.

That is true, as far as PAE implementation goes. However, Microsoft's
license prohibits such expansions, and there are tech discussions that the
use of physical address extensions in 32-bit systems causes driver

Hi Kathy.

I certainly would not go with 64bit. The amount of complaints we've had
about it! a friend of mine runs a PC repair business and people find it a
lot more convenient to downgrade to 32bit. the reality is that if your pc
only has 4GB or less of memory, 32bit windows is fine. if it has 4GB or
more, then they recommend 64bit but in reality 32bit can work on windows
with up to 16GB of ram using PAE or physical address extention technology.
this probably isn't the place to discuss 32bit verses 64bit, but i've a
feeling that you're paying extra for jaws 64bit, i haven't checked out the
latest prices but i do know that there are separate versions of jaws for
32bit systems and 64bit systems.

I hope that helps, feel free to write me off list if you need more
clarification at:

2012-01-14 Thread Mobeen Iqbal
lol i wasn't trying to say you could by a true 32bit system! its obvious
you can't as hardware has moved on. thanks for the clarification anyway!
its the operating system that is 32bit, the hardware supports both 32bit
and 64bit is mearly the point that was being made its up to you what
ever you go with.

Re: [JAWS-Users] in the market for a new laptop

2012-01-14 Thread John R Vaughn
Jaws offers us either 32 bit or 64 bit versions of Jaws at no additional
cost.
I just bought a new sony laptop with 6 gigs of ram and 64 bit windows 7
homepremium. My processor is a Intel turbo boost I5 2430M processor which is
available on most new computers today.
I understand that some programs written for 32 bit windows may not work or
work well on a 64 bit machine but I up graded to office 2010 business
version when I purchased this computer.
John in sunny southwest florida With my current configuration of this
lapto, it is lightening fast and I think I have the ability to use it for a
number of years.
