Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mouse pad on a Dell laptop
I have a Toshiba Satellite M645-s...(I can't remember the last for digits of the model number). There are 2 ways in which I can turn my mouse pad on and off. There is a Function key that is used in conjunction with the Fn key to toggle the mouse pad on and off. There is an icon of a mouse pad, a slash, and a mouse pad with a line through it on the assigned Function key. I do not use this technique, so I can't tell you with Function key it is. The second option that is available and I always use, is with a small button that is located above the mouse pad and below the spacebar. This button is very difficult to detect tactually. The button is level with the surrounding surface and has a slight texture change where the button is. My understanding is that when the mouse pad is turned on, there is a light illuminated just above the mouse pad where the small button is. When the mouse pad is off, so is the light. When the computer is shut down and then powered up later, the setting is retained. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of John R Vaughn Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2015 8:45 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mouse pad on a Dell laptop How do you do this on a Toshiba laptop? Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mouse pad on a Dell laptop
In my setup, I find it if I search for mouse from the Start Menu, then from the Control Panel options choose the devices tab. I can then tab into the dialogue, and disable pointing device is one of the options. When I disable and leave it disabled, it carries over after reboots. I should also add that I turned off the FN key functionalities, if that helps. (I used the HW Utility to do that.) What I have (I am not certain of model number) is either a Satelllite L550 or L500. There is also a checkbox in this pointing device dialogue for 'palm' which, I believe, is the source of all of our troubles, as - can you believe it? - the palm resting on the mmousepad can at as a mouse triggering mechanism. Perhaps it's for those who have arthrities or who have no or no dexterous fingers. Anyway, I think I've made it harder to set it off by increasing the percentage on that particular slider. I did much of this 'customisation' by exploring, exploring. -Original Message- From: John R Vaughn Sent: Monday, February 16, 2015 1:45 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mouse pad on a Dell laptop How do you do this on a toshiba laptop? Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mouse pad on a Dell laptop
I've owned two laptops over the years, and both had pads for mouse functions. My remedy was to place a four-by-six notecard over the pad and tape it down on the right. Then when a sighted person needs to use the pad, all you need to do is flip the card back. The tape lasts a long time. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Arianna Calesso Sent: Friday, February 13, 2015 8:43 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mousepad on a Dell laptop Does anyone know of a keystroke to disable or shut down the mousepad on a Dell laptop?
