Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all FS says
is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the company through
automatic error reporting.  While this suggests that the update is minor, the
timing of its release is quite thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long
since the previous update came out.  Besides, why would FS release an update
that addresses only one issue?  To my knowledge, this has never happened before.

I just checked, the JAWS authorization key number is not displayed. There is
the serial number and then there is a locking code, which is the code you are
given once you enter the authorization number as you install JAWS.

You can retrieve the Authorization code, if you go through the authorization

will display. If it were me, I would copy and paste it from there, and save it
somewhere.

Barbara,

I think Mike is correct. It will not be in the JAWS/Help/About dialog, which is
what I think you're describing. It will be in the dialog during the
authorization process. You can start this from JAWS/Help/Update Authorization
and moving through a couple dialogs.

JAWS And Kaspersky

2015-05-15 Thread Justin McDevitt via Jfw
Hello list members:

A recent post regarding the AVG Anti-virus software brought to mind a
comment from one of the Freedom Scientific JAWS Tech support team that there
have been some issues with Kaspersky and JAWS.

Until this past Monday when I purchased JFW 16, I have been using Kaspersky
with JAWS 12, with no compatibility issues.

Any perspective would be appreciated.

Best, Justin

Re: Retriving Authorization code

2015-05-15 Thread Dave Carlson via Jfw
Barbara,

I think Mike is correct. It will not be in the JAWS/Help/About dialog, which
is what I think you're describing. It will be in the dialog during the
authorization process. You can start this from JAWS/Help/Update
Authorization and moving through a couple dialogs.

You can retrieve the Authorization code, if you go through the authorization

will display. If it were me, I would copy and paste it from there, and save
it somewhere.

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all
FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the
company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the
update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking,
as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out. Besides,
why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue? To my
knowledge, this has never happened before.

Re: Inquiry about the use of Jaws with Oracle database

2015-05-15 Thread Dave Carlson via Jfw
Sad to say, that in my past work experience with Oracle 11 it was a very
difficult interface. the only way I was able to use it was if there was an
html-based front-end overlay to the database structure. In other words, the
actual Oracle interface was very unfriendly, in spite of all the Java
plug-ins and access bridge. I usually tried to avoid using it whenever
possible.

Given that everything oracle related is java based I would suspect
that it is fairly spotty, but it has been far longer than since I have
gone blind that I have done anything with Oracle products so can't

I do know that oracle has a command line tool similar to MS' sqlcmd

Re: Window7 desktop typing character echo !!

2015-05-15 Thread Carolyn Arnold via Jfw
Unless it's different than with JAWS 13 and the other versions I've had, for
a permanent change to your screen echo, go to Insert V for JAWS Verbosity.
You'll have to arrow through a lot of other options, but when you find it,
there will be four choices - character; word; character and word; and no
echo. While in a document, hit Insert 2 on the number keys above qwerty. It
will give you the same choices.

Re: Inquiry about the use of Jaws with Oracle database

2015-05-15 Thread Soronel Haetir via Jfw
Given that everything oracle related is java based I would suspect
that it is fairly spotty, but it has been far longer than since I have
gone blind that I have done anything with Oracle products so can't
really say from personal experience. Even when I could see I was not
nearly as impressed with the Oracle management tools as the equivalent
from MS.

I do know that oracle has a command line tool similar to MS' sqlcmd
and I would expect that to work fine with jaws.

On 5/15/15, Carlos Fischer via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
 Dear list members,

Probably I should be more specific, as I suppose that just by mentioning
Oracle is too ambiguous. With your input, I can then better approach the
 user´s question.
Thanks very much in advance for your help.

I think Mike is correct. It will not be in the JAWS/Help/About dialog,
which

is what I think you're describing. It will be in the dialog during the
authorization process. You can start this from JAWS/Help/Update
Authorization and moving through a couple dialogs.

I also like Windows 8.1 and have found it to be very good. The gripe is that
people don't like the metro things if they don't want them, and want the
ability to have only what they want. Something like that. But
performance-wise, I like it. I won't be jumping too quickly to Windows 10,
and will wait until Jaws support is good and FS and MS get their bugs worked
out well on that new venture.

Re: Another J16 Update Available

2015-05-15 Thread Carolyn Arnold via Jfw
Thank you for asking. My husband has 8.1, which, as I understand, is very
good. But I remember when Windows 8 came out, people were in a bit of an
uproar about it. As for me, I am crippling along with XP until JAWS 17 comes
out. When that happens, I want to gather all the information I can about
what works best with it, for instance a scanner for my printer, and I intend
to get Windows 10. So if anyone has advice about a scanner, I really need to
know, since I am completely ignorant about scanners. I thought about getting
8.1, but a couple of people advised me that since this is so close, there
was no point in learning two different systems - just wait and learn one. So
right now, that is my plan.

I know that I'll need everything for 64 bits then, and I don't know if some
of the records I have will transfer, but, as Rick says, Tomorrow is another
day, another way...

GIFT (God is forever true),

Carolyn

Subject: Retriving Authorization code

Is it possible to retrieve my authorization code from Jaws itself? I thought
I had it written down, but somehow it’s not where I thought I had it
recorded. About under the Help menu only shows serial number, etc.

RE: Another J16 Update Available

2015-05-15 Thread Michal Nowicki via Jfw
Unfortunately, it is often difficult to resolve these types of problems because
they don't come up on all machines and thus may be difficult to reproduce.
Another thing to always keep in mind is that something else could be causing
these problems, such as application-specific settings, antivirus/antispyware
software, other programs, plugins, add-ons, toolbars, and extensions that
somehow interfere with JAWS and/or Thunderbird, or even malware.

and have had no trouble with it. i'm using 16 and windows7 64.

Um, I don't find much comfort in this new update. I'm back to 15, as

 Hello.

I suspect the problem that they corrected was the problem where JAWS
for Windows was restarting over three times a day. At least I have
not seen this on my machine. Since the latest update, and I was
seeing it very frequently before the update.

 Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic;
all FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to
the company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests
that the update is minor, the timing of its release is quite
thought-provoking, as it hasn't been too long since the previous
update came out. Besides, why would FS release an update that
addresses only one issue? To my knowledge, this has never happened before.

Another update for J16 is available, J16.0.2342. I didn't have time
