I don't get it. Which store will perform printing jobs for you? Best Buy?
Staples? McDonald's? WalMart? Please explain. And how do you transport
the document you want to print to this mysterious store? Do you copy and
paste it to a flash drive or what? I really don't understand how this
works.

It is time for me to replace my HP 3915 ink jet printer. I suspect that
just about any wireless, color, stand alone printer out there will meet my
modest demands for quality and speed.

My concern is accessibility. Can I assume that HP, Epson, Brother printers
are accessible for routine printing purposes? Should I be warned off of
something?

Several points on accessibility of printers:

Stan, although Gerald is correct that many printers now have touchscreens,
most functions, at least with my printer, can also be controlled with
software on your computer. Although the printer that Adrian is talking
about is a laser, and black and white, you seem to be in the market for
another color inkjet. Brother makes a line of those, including the
MFC-J870DW. As I said, my all in one came with Brother Control Center
which reads surprisingly well with JAWS. I've not actually seen the 870,
but older Brother inkjets came with a version of Control Center, so I
would assume the 870 would too. I use Control Center 4 with JAWS 15, and
it reads quite well.

Adrian, to your point about changing the toner, you find it difficult? I
guess I'm used to it, having worked with a ton of Brother printers going
back to the hl-2040 for work. It's really pretty easy. That's a non-JAWS
topic, but if I can give you any pointers, feel free to Email me off list
at b...@formyfriends.org

Best to all,
Brad

Stan,

Make sure you read Brad's very positive message from last night about his
Brother model. I have the basic Brother laser jet printer, Brother
HL-2270DW Compact, which I purchased from Amazon. The customer reviews
there gave me tips that helped accessibility, even though they weren't
directed to a visually impaired audience. The one I remember is that when
the printer cartridge appears to be dying, press the start button seven
times rapidly in succession to get more life out of it. I do find
installing a new cartridge difficult without sighted assistance, but it's
doable. With a laser printer, the need to replace cartridges is much less
frequent than you will have found it with an ink jet model. Even though
the price of laser cartridges is higher, they last so much longer that I
suspect they're cheaper over time.

Others have posted positive experiences with HP printers. I had one for
years, and it was a workhorse. However, when it finally met its maker, I
replaced it with an HP 1102, the newer version of my old model. This 1102
had several problems. For one thing, the laser cartridges didn't last
nearly as long. More important, pages printed out with defects, such as
random lines down the middle. I called HP's customer service, but they
required that I work with them in a process that would require sighted
assistance. I couldn't have anyone sit with me through such a long,
drawn-out procedure. Then I learned about HP's number for disabled
customers. Others here have reported positive experiences with this
department. Mine was aggravating in the extreme. I was on hold for more
than seventy minutes before someone answered the first time I called. As
I spoke to the rep, I became convinced I needed a replacement. I must
have been out of warranty at that point, although I hadn't had the
printer for the length of time I'd have expected, so I bought a new 1102.
Almost immediately I experienced the same problems with page quality.
Once again I called the line for disabled customers, and I was kept on
hold for so long that I decided to say farewell to HP and hello to
Brother.

Printing Photos Using a Kiosk

2015-06-27 Thread Dave Carlson via Jfw
Gerald,

Many drug store type businesses have a kiosk where you can connect your
flash drive or even your iPhone/android direct to the machine. A graphical
display with touch pads then allows you to browse through your folders and
files to select the images you want printed. You select the size and finish,
enter your name and phone number, press OK a couple times, and hit print. Go
about your other shopping and later visit the kiosk to pick up your print
job. Pay at the register for those you decide to keep.

Re: Printing Photos Using a Kiosk

2015-06-27 Thread Gerald Levy via Jfw

And of course, none of these print kiosks is accessible, right? They would
have to have speech output at the least to make them blind accessible.
There are two Rite-Aids, as well as a CVS and Walgreens in my neighborhood,
and none of them has one of these high-tech kiosks. As long as the
blindness advocacy groups sit on their fat butts and do little or nothing to
address this growing problem of inaccessible print kiosks, subway fare-card
vending machines and laundry-card vending machines, blind consumers will fall
farther and farther behind their sighted peers. BTW, a few years ago, one of
those laundry-card vending machines was installed in the laundry room of my
apartment building, and when I asked the building manager whether it could
be made accessible, he just laughed at me.

Avira vs.AVG

2015-06-27 Thread Gerald Levy via Jfw

For those of you who have tried both Avira and AVG, which one is more
JAWS-friendly? I am more interested in ease-of-use and accessibility than
superior anti-virus protection. I'm sure that both programs provide reasonably
decent protection, so for me, accessibility is a more important criterion. I'm
currently using MSE on my XP workstation, but my understanding is that database
definition updates for XP users of MSE will be discontinued next month,so I'm
looking for a free accessible alternative.

RE: printer accessibility

2015-06-27 Thread Cristóbal via Jfw
In fact, yes Gerald. UPS and Kinkos along with those other stores will print
for you as well. You provide them with the file (on a thumb drive). I think
even coscto does it, but haven't used them. About it being cheaper...I'm not
so sure about that. I would have to disagree on that point. The toner for my
printer runs me around $75.00. This particular model doesn't do refills.
Anyway, at $75.00, it's still cheaper than going to the store and paying
something like 5 or 6 or more cents it is per page. Maybe if you print every
blue moon, it might come cheaper in the long run, but I'm doubtful.

Should I be warned off of
 something?

My screen reader is Jaws 16.

 Thanks for your help.

The best that I can remember was that one reason I left AVG was it was
harder to use, probably in terms of accessability, but that was about eight
years ago - way lot has happened in my life since then, might not be

Re: printer accessibility

2015-06-27 Thread Carolyn Arnold via Jfw
Well, for instance, here, if you went to Jones Printing Company, they could
do that; probably Office Max could too. It just seems to me that unless you
never printed but once in a blue moon, life would be easier from many
standpoints to have a printer at hand. Now in considering a new one for
myself, we would seldom want photos printed, so that is one to consider out
sourcing. It would seem to me that frequency of printing would make the
difference. My husband designed a check writing program that works on my
Microsoft Office file, so I even print checks. I don't use my printer every
day, every week, but when we need it, it is at hand.

To have a document printed at one of these stores, what file format does it
have to be in? And will they print envelopes for you also? After all, what
good is printing a letter only to discover that the store can't print the
envelope to send it in.

Hi every one I am having a problem with jaws and office 365. The problem
I am having is with outlook. Recently the college that i am attending
clark state community college decided to move the student email accounts
from google to outlook 365. I tried to use the arrow keys to navigate
the menus and read the messages that are in my inbox and jaws is having
problem reading them. After I signed in to outlook 365, jaws told me
there was one application region and 1 heading and 2 links. Do I need to
contact freedomscientific for them to fix this problem?

Ok, I take it back--sort of. I found a setting to choose classic design
mode instead of whatever that beta design mode was that defaulted. In
classic design mode, it's much more doable. Still a little querky, but
the accessibility is definitely better in Classic mode.

Brad,

This won't help, but will affirm...I tried to set up a survey using Survey

Yes, in spite of it being easy to use to complete a survey, creating one is
