Yes this is a jaws support list and all of us benefit immeasurably from the information we gain. But we're human beings first and this has been demonstrated throughout this thread. How can you not react to someone's medical difficulties and traumas? I know we all wish Carolyn and her family good health and pray her family member has a complete recovery. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Daniel McBride via Jfw Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2015 10:02 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' RE: JAWS and Windows 10 issue
I'm going to make an educated guess that it may have to do with the types of video drivers that are installed in the different computers. I have experienced JAWS not identifying the password field at start-up. It never reads that to me correctly either. So far, not a big fan of Windows 10. I'm hopeful it will get better. I seem to remember Windows 8 starting out like this too. -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Pablo Morales via Jfw Sent: Friday, August 14, 2015 9:56 AM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Pablo Morales pablocmd2...@gmail.com Subject: RE: JAWS and Windows 10 issue Hi Mike, Well, I am not getting the same problem that you are getting with your jaws cursor. I am noticing a problem when I press alt tab when I want to go to other window, but it doesn't happen always. I am still noticing that when the computer is in the log in window, jaws is not able to read the text field where we should type the password. If I press tab, nothing happen, if I try to use insert tab to read where is the Pc cursor, nothing happen. I have to press alt tab two times to make jaws catch the control where is the password field. I really don't understand why all these problems are different in each computer. RE: disabling forms mode
Hi You can select automatically Forms Mode in the Jaws Settings Center , there is an option named Forms Mode. This is the explanation that FS gives. Hope that helps Use radio buttons in this group to automatically or manually enter Forms Mode. Select Auto to automatically enter Forms Mode when you press TAB, SHIFT+TAB, or the ARROW Keys to move to a control. Auto Forms Mode means that you can freely type in the edit field without having to first press ENTER. When you exit the control, Forms Mode turns off. This functionality can be very useful for new and sighted JAWS users. Auto Forms Mode is on by default. Select Manual to manually control Forms Mode operation. Manual Forms Mode is used by default when using Navigation Quick Keys to jump to a form control, such as F or E for the next form field or edit box. This means that when you move into an edit field or combo box control, you must press ENTER first to type text or select a value. To manually exit Forms Mode, press NUM PAD PLUS or ESC. Manually controlling Forms Mode may be better suited for experienced users. Note: When Forms Mode is on, Say Line or Say All reads all text on the current line. This includes labels and descriptions. -Mensaje original- De: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] En nombre de Carolyn Arnold via Jfw Enviado el: viernes, 14 de agosto de 2015 1:35 Para: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' For instance, if there were no forms mode, JAWS wouldn't know how to respond when you press the letter h because it wouldn't know whether you want to type an h or if you wish to move to the next heading on the page. This obviously is not an issue for sighted people because they navigate the web visually. I hope this clarifies why Forms Mode is an essential component of JAWS and other screen readers. RE: disabling forms mode
That's more or less what the recent forms mode changes are meant to do. With the proper settings, you should be able to tab around, going in and out as needed. I enter data on Internet apps every day, and it's something that works for me with minimal effort most of the time. You can even tune your settings for individual sights. JAWS help, or a review of what's new in recent releases, covers this well. Gould. I think it's still on FS's website or some where else... it was divided into two parts. the first part dealt with the basic stuff, like how to get started, syntax, etc. but the second part dealt with stuff that assumed that the user had prior programming knowledge about concepts, techniques, etc. like the knowledge one would attain after programming for a while... a good while. since you've programmed for about 3 decades,... I think it was you, ... you could fill in the missing explanation that a newbie would need to comprehend before attempting to try their hand at scripting. creating a wiki sounds like a good idea, this way other experienced programmers could also contribute to the cause, working out explainations of different concepts, and whatever else would be important. but it should be that a newbie needs to register and login in order to read and/or contribute. and I'd also suggest that only the experienced programmers have the right to add/modify these materials that teach the needed concepts and explainations, effectively preventing mis information by any newbie. the experienced programmer who would want to contribute would have to send an email request , to you?, to be approved. if this last part doesn't sit well with you, something has to be done to ensure that the newbie is not mis informed of explainations and whatever else would be important to understand. your thoughts? The advantage of putting this book online as a wikibook is that the information would be much more likely to stay up-to-date and relevant; people could immediately correct any typos or mistakes; and of course the book would be free to all and readily available online. The question is: In light of the wonderful documentation from Freedom Scientific that is already available, what kind of content would I / we need to provide in this new online resource in order to make it worthwhile? What would you like to know about JSL that you can't already learn from the FS docs? Would we want something like a brief overview of JAWS scripting? Or maybe a quick start guide to get you up and running with the basics? Or possibly a scripting gems kind of book, with several examples of JAWS scripts? Or a language reference? Or all of the above? I've included a link to the product page below. https://www.headsets.com/headset/plantronics-smh1783-11-headset-and-amplifie r-for-the-visually-impaired/ -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Brent Harding via Jfw Sent: Friday, August 14, 2015 10:51 AM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Brent Harding br...@hostany.net Subject: dual source headsets, where to get? I am wondering how you go about getting a dual source headset to be able to hear JFW on one side and have a phone call on the other side. Even better, it would be nice if the microphone sent its output back to the phone. I tried getting quotes on a sight called Thumbtack, and I spoke with a guy who answered who does audio engineering on the side. He thinks he could make a cable where I could plug any headset mic in to do this, as long as it had the combination jack that combines the headset and mic on it. If one was going to use a phone that has the same kind of jack as the iPhone, which uses the 4-band, 3.5mm connector, does such a product exist? The closes thing I found years ago was a discontinued Plantronics headset, but it only had the RJ headset plug for the phone side, which may or may not be able to be adapted. Also, I'd like something less expensive than that. I spoke with Plantronics the other day, and it appeared that what they may have had has been discontinued so long ago that it isn't in their system any more. The guy told me that the only dual source headsets like that have to be manually switched between phone call and other source, which doesn't work if you switch to read something and the person on the other end says something you missed. what I do when the need arises is to use a single earpiece headset (headphone plus a built in mic) connected to the phone and one earbud plugged into the computer. now I'd be interested in the adaptor the engineer comes up with, as I'd like to have a more elegant headpiece in attempt to eliminate all the wires. Re: dual source headsets, where to get?
I think I spoke with the same person I got on the line the other day, and she said this thing sounds like something very new to the market she didn't know they had before. As for getting a custom cable or set modified, one guy seemed confident he might be able to do it, while the other kept me on the phone talking about random computer stuff they did in the 80's and other stuff I got too tired late to understand his muffled voice any more. He claimed that the proper headsets, such as earpods, have an analog to digital converter that would need to be accounted for, but I doubt other 4-pin headsets even bother with something like this. I'm definitely not going with the guy who didn't know how the fourth pin works, thinking it would mix with the speaker part of the ear pieces. Circuit boards in a box are probably a too complex way to fix this simple issue. - Original Message - From: Michael Mote via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Michael Mote miketmot...@gmail.com Sent: Friday, August 14, 2015 1:40 PM Subject: RE: dual source headsets, where to get? Re: dual source headsets, where to get?
Oh, OK. I wonder if they make a way to have it hook into the 4 band 3.5mm jacks on the phone side? I think I get how this is supposed to work where some phones had the removable cord on the handset part, and you plug a cable from the amp part into this instead, and the original phone cable in to the other side, sort of like answering machines did. - Original Message - From: Michael Mote via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Michael Mote miketmot...@gmail.com Sent: Friday, August 14, 2015 12:00 PM Subject: RE: dual source headsets, where to get? Re: dual source headsets, where to get?
It would seem so, whatever plug the removable cord desk phones use in to the 4 pin 3.5mm. I called Headsets.com, and the woman that answered said she would contact their shipping people to see if it exists. It is seeming to be going to be a hard solution to a simple problem. She said that the phone cord to 3.5 adapter can't be done because you have the power and stuff that is typically in a desk handset. - Original Message - From: Ward Dudley via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com To: The Jaws for Windows support list. jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Ward Dudley whdud...@gmail.com Sent: Friday, August 14, 2015 1:26 PM Subject: Re: dual source headsets, where to get? disabling Forms Mode
Hope no one minds a somewhat-high-maintenance member... I am part-self-taught, part-trained-by-state-agency, part trained-using-audio-tutorials, and certain concepts are still either fuzzy or untried, despite my years of JAWS experience! I am also a highly visual learner, and process things best with a combination of Braille notes and hands-on... BTW, does anyone know if JAWS training materials are available in Braille? I do have the quick-ref booklet, but it’s of limited use. One question I’ve had for years: when materials mention an “element,” what exactly is that? Also, is there a keystroke for skipping to new messages on a website such as ours? Really appreciate everyone’s feedback—I am the type that needs to know why things work the way they do, before really mastering concepts! Far more insight than I have previously. I will also try the Automatic setting again; didn’t seem to change things, or maybe I just didn’t understand it completely... Also, Kevin, I changed the Forms Mode sound to a long match-strike, due to some mild Asperger’s; it may be that I will have to select the next-least-intrusive sound, if the softness of that sound is making it harder for me to negotiate using Forms Mode. It was a nice idea, but not necessarily the most practical (LOL)! So, there’s no longer a “pop,” which I did experience as jarring; will have to see what other choices I have. Carolyn, though I’m not familiar with the back story, I will keep Meredith in prayer—I’m a prayin’ woman. Your scenario happened to me just a few weeks ago, when I was trying to email my sister-in-law about a lunch date and ended up sending it to my mom instead—oops! No worries. Thanks! Re: VLC media player
Jim, You're not doing it wrong. I've found the only way to get Control Up or Down to work is to use the JAWS Pass through key combination, JAWS Key 3. I just discovered the mouse wheel thing and personally I find that much easier. I have checked all settings and control up arrow doesn't do anything for me and ignore keyboard shortcuts is unchecked as well. Is there a way I can have a shortcut key for volume up and down on my keyboard? Any help will be appreciated. RE: JAWS and Windows 10 issue
Hmmm, if the video driver is the problem. How can we know which is the better video driver? Or how can we know which video driver we should install in our computers? -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Michael Mote via Jfw Sent: Friday, August 14, 2015 7:07 AM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' Cc: Michael Mote Subject: RE: JAWS and Windows 10 issue I'm going to make an educated guess that it may have to do with the types of video drivers that are installed in the different computers. Even though, I have found other problems, but curiously the problems are different in 4 different computers. Would be interesting to know why jaws is working differently in 4 different computers, when all windows 10 installation are new, and all jaws installation are new also. A couple of hours ago, I installed jwindows 10 in a new computer, Lenovo desktop, and jaws has been working very good. I really don't understand why all these problems are different in each computer. dual source headsets, where to get?
I am wondering how you go about getting a dual source headset to be able to hear JFW on one side and have a phone call on the other side. Sharon took Meredith to the Kennedy Kreiger Institute in Baltimore for evaluation and hoped for treatment. After a thorough study of her history, as well as examination, they determined that Meredith was not a candidate for inpatient treatment at their facility. They did make recommendations with regard to adjustment of some of her medication and, yet again, more physical therapy to fight damage that has already had effects on her leg muscles and both sides of her pelvis bone. It was a letdown after clinging to hope for a couple of months like we did, but those were a nice couple of months. Please keep her in your prayers.
