Look into the Dell XPS 13" an important thing to look out for when buying a
laptop is too see if the keyboard has an application and insert key as these

Re: Safely Remove Hardware question

2015-08-19 Thread Feliciano Godoy via Jfw
Yes it is important to safely remove devices when you are given the option to
do so. You can safely remove a device by accessing the computer window or your
system tray. I personally like to access this by going to the computer window
by pressing windows key plus the E key. You can then press the applications key
or shift plus at 10 and hit J for eject or simply arrow down.

I am sure this may seem pretty elementary to some, but I actually have
gotten varying opinions on the need to use the safely remove hardware

 drives.

 So, I have two questions:

 1. Is it still necessary to invoke the safely remove hardware option
when using any of these USB devices? I have heard that in later operating
systems like Windows 7, this is not as necessary as it used to be.

 And

 2. How does one easily get to the safely remove hardware option, if
it would be a good idea for me to use it?

I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 16 here.

 Thank you!

Re: JAWS + Windows 10

2015-06-04 Thread Feliciano Godoy via Jfw
Hi,
Windows 10 will in fact release before the 29th of July 2015. The purpose of
the Get Windows 10 button on the system tray for users with the latest version
of Windows 7 and 8.1 is so that users that have reserved Windows 10 can have
Windows 10 before the 29th of July 2015 to prevent the microsoft servers from
being overloaded with downloads. Windows 10 will be available for reserved
users in a controled manner. If you accidently reserve, you will have the
ability to opt out. I would suggest individuals to hold on the upgrade for now
as your assistive technology, devices and printers may not be compatible with
Windows 10. I am currently in the insider program and am having a problem with
the mirror display driver on Windows 10 with JAWS 16. Other then that, I am
enjoying Windows 10. I currently have Windows 8.1 as my primary machine and
Winodows 10 is like having Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 combined. Just my .02 cents

Go to the first header on the row that has the headers. Then EXSYS the jaws
quick settings and type title on the search, then you can arrow down to title
reading where you can enable this feature.

 Greetings all,
Is there a way to make Jaws read headers in MS Word similar to pressing alt,

 Thanks Kevin.

The 13 inch HP stream Microsoft edition is great. Only drawback is that it
comes with a 32 GB hard drive and when Microsoft office 365 and jaws is
installed, you're left with about 9 GB of hard drive storage. It's a great
laptop for the price of about $240

Your printer may have came with it disc that has the scanning utility software.
If it does not or does not happen to be accessible, you can always use Windows
fax and scan. Simply open the software which is built into Windows, axis the
file menu, then arrow down to new submenu then select the action that you want
to do. After the scan is complete, by default the scans go into a folder called

I would appreciate any feedback users of this or perhaps an alternative

Initial impressions on the 13 HP Stream Microsoft edition

2015-02-19 Thread Feliciano Godoy via Jfw
I purchased a 13 HP Stream from the Microsoft store. It feels and performs
great despite the low cost of $229. When you purchase it from the Microsoft
store, you get a year subscription of Office 365 personal and a $25 gift card
to the Microsoft store. The laptop has 2GB of ram and is a 64bit laptop. The
battery life is also great. Battery life up to 7 hours on a full charge. It
also comes with a Intel Celeron chip wit 2.16-2.58 GHZ. 13 HP Stream 32GB
Microsoft edition has 9.7GB available after Windows updates, Office 365 and
JAWS 16 screen reader install.

For more details on the laptop:

The mirror display does not install on the latest Windows 10 tech preview

also unable to navigate the start menu on this build like the previous builds.
The start menu interface uhas changed. However, NVDA does work. I was actually

 Hello Friends,

I have a new computer (just over a month ago). It's a desk top (Acer tower)

installed. I haven't been able to figure out whether is the operating
system, JAWS 16 or Office 365 - or some combination of the three, that is
 causing the problems.

Apart from the learning curve associated with Windows 8.1 (Groan!), MS Word
2013 often has trouble loading Word documents from previous versions of
Word. Often it takes a long time to load, displaying a message something
like scanning layout, and I can't do anything with the document until it
is finished. I have a Word 2010 document with several tables on the first
page, and it corrupts the document, spreading the 1st page over more than 2
pages. My wife says that she can see that it displays the document OK for a
couple of seconds, then changes it to the corrupt layout.

I installed Office 365 on a laptop with Windows 7. It took several hours.
The MS Office group is in the start menu, but none of the programs will run,
giving the message that it has stopped working. The details say appcrash.

If anyone can help with suggestions, or point me to some help, I'd be very
grateful. I am planning on having a chat with the vendor.

Right now, as I arrow down through an e-mail with the normal PC cursor mode,

 Hi again,

Someone on this list earlier asked me what version of Java I was running. The

am reading a PDF document either in Adobe XI Pro or Adobe Reader XI if I alt
tab to another program my entire system hangs. I cannot do anything. Jaws is
still running, but everything is super slow, and I can't alt tab or close a
program or anything. I sometimes manage to accidentally close Adobe by
continuously pressing alt tab then alt F4 until somehow I manage to close
Adobe, and as soon as Adobe closes, everything works fine again.

If anyone has any suggestions I would sure appreciate it. Should I uninstall
 Java?

 Thanks,

Subject: Jaws 16, Windows 7, Adobe XI Pro Reader crashing

 Hi everyone,

At work I run Jaws 16, latest update and Windows 7. I use Adobe XI Pro as
well as Adobe Reader XI. A couple of weeks ago I began having problems
whenever I open a PDF document in either Adobe or Adobe Reader. What happens
is if I Alt tab away from the PDF document I am reading, everything locks up.
If I try to alt tab back to the document nothing happens. Jaws will still
speak but not enough to do anything. Sometime, if I press Alt F4 a few times,
I will be able to get control of my system back. The trick seems to be
closing the PDF document, but this isn’t easy to do as Jaws gives me no
feedback as to where I am. I tried pressing CTRL + Alt + Delete and then Alt
T to open the Task manager. It takes quite a while, but it will finally open,
but I cannot move around to find the PDF document and end the task. Jaws will
read the first item in the task manager, but as soon as I press the down
arrow everything freezes up again. This is very frustrating as I work with a
lot of PDF files and need to alt tab back and forth between the PDF and our
database. The strange thing is if I press Shift F10 to bring up the Windows
list, and switch between programs this way, it works fine. It seems that the
alt tab keystroke, for some reason, causes my system to crash.

Has anyone else experienced anything remotely similar to this? If so, is
 there a fix?

I called FS Tech support and, at first was told that there were issues with
Adobe XI, but then the person I was talking to seemed to change her mind and
tried everything she could to prove that it wasn’t a Jaws issue. I am not at
all impressed with FS tech support. If there is an issue with Jaws and Adobe
 XI I’d like to know!

Anyway, any ideas will be much appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Russell

 I am using Jaws 16, IE 11, windows 7 64 bit.
I went to the create an account link.
I can enter my name, user name, password, no problem.
Then, I have to choose a month from a combo box.
It does not behave normally. I hit enter, and then tried alt left arrow.
 Also, up and down arrow.
By hit and miss, I can get the month.
No problem with the edit fields for day and year.
The next combo box is for gender.
Again, this is hit and miss.
It actually says, one of three.
I would just try to hit anything there, but that third choice does concern
 me. smile
And, this is where it locks up the screen.
I have tried a couple of times, but it always sticks in this spot, freezes,
and I can’t go any farther in the process.
If anyone knows of a work around, or another way to go at this, please let
 me know.
Trying to get any online help is useless.
 Thanks,and frustrated,

Internet service will continue, just email will no longer be there.
I’ve been using them for years, and haven’t used any other email providers.
I am using Jaws 16, Windows 7 64 bit, and Windows Live Mail.
I don’t need anything fancy (if one can even say that here), but would
 appreciate any recommendations.
I know things change, but sure wish some things wouldn’t. smile Crystal

First, when manipulating msconfig, be careful the changes you make there can
be longer lasting then what you wish.
If you want to speed up the load process and performance you want only
entries under the startup tab. Not all entries should be unchecked. Things
like MS Office, your favorite media player, Adobe and such, are all okay to
 uncheck.
Second, if I was looking at the right specs for your computer you should
have 4 Gigs of memory, right? This should be enough memory to run Windows,
JFW and other programs comfortably. Was the recommended settings for
appearance or performance? Always use performance settings.
If you were to call HP, as you should have support, just let them know that
the performance seems slow. Are you running Symantec or MacAfee products?
These are notorious as being resource hogs.
 Hope this can help.

Unless HP support has gotten better over the years, that may or may not be

Maybe its just slow. You on you want to disable things that you know what to
look for. You may have to do some research on Google what is there maybe take
it to the place where you bought it from to have it checked out in case it is a
hardware problem?

Subject: Still having problems with scanned image PDF files

 Hi, all.

A few weeks ago, I raised the issue of how best to use the OCR capability in
the most recent versions of Jaws to read scanned image PDF files.

In response to my quiry, a list member gave me the following instructions:

Tom, using your current version of JAWS, your best bet is to perform an OCR
of your screen, when you have an unreadable PDF in focus. To do this, you
will need to press JAWS Key plus the space bar to activate the layer menu.

JAWS should make an audible sound indicating that you've done this
successfully. Then press the letter O. JAWS should announce OCR. Then
press S for screen. You can also press W for window, if the screen option
does not give you what you want.

I received another scanned image file today, and tried both sets of
instructions, but had no luck in reading the text in the file. Jaws did
come up, but it spoke in the Jaws cursor voice, rather than the PC cursor
voice, and didn't appear to be reading anything meaningful from the document
 in focus.

 Am I missing something here?

I'd be happy to e-mail the file to anyone who might want to take a look at
 it.

P.S. I'm using Jaws 14 on a windows 7 machine here. Perhaps this would be
a good reason to upgrade to Jaws 16.

According to the installation instructionss, you should only have to install
the OCR separately if you don't have Internet access during installation. It
typically will download the OCR during the installation process, but if you
don't have Internet access for some reason, that obviously can't happen.

 Subject: accessible digital recorder

Hello everyone, I would appreciate your suggestions.
I'm looking for a good accessible hand-held digital recorder. I have an
older Olympia that has been really great but it is not plug-and-play,
meaning, for this model, you have to install software to be able to
transfer files to a PC. I can't seem to find any software to make this
happen since windows vista, so I think it's time for a new recorder.
features: good quality recording of voice or music is a must, easy
transfer of files to a PC, earphone/speaker out, and a place to plug an
 external mic.

 Thanks very much in advance,
 Stan

Auto complete glitch remains on JAWS 16 with Excel 2013

2014-10-28 Thread Feliciano Godoy via Jfw
Auto complete glitch still remains on Microsoft office Excel 2013 with JAWS 16
on Windows 8.1. I also have this glitch with jaws 15. You would think this
would have gotten fixed. :( if I had a list of names on a certain column JAWS
used to echo out the name as it auto completes. I know the information is there
as I type some letters of the name since it Echols it out if I read the current
line. Let's get this fixed guys.

Try resetting the Internet explorer settings.doing the following will not lose
your favorites.
Access the menu bar, go to tools, there'll down to Internet optionsthen press
control tab until you get to the advanced tab, then tap to reset… Then press
enter follow the prompts.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, you can always go back to Internet
Explorer by going to programs and features then pressing shift tab to Windows
update then press enter then you can Errol through the list and uncheck
Internet Explorer 11. This will take you back to Internet Explorer 10.

If forms mode seems different, check your forms mode settings in the JAWS

Re: Witch webmail works best with Jaws?

2014-09-04 Thread Feliciano Godoy via Jfw
Gmail is great. They allow you to choose basic HTML which is more accessible
for screen reader users. It can be changed to this setting so when you log in
you are ready to go.

 Hi,

I can't access my Verizon account on their web site and so am thinking of
signing up an alternative web-based mail account? Which one works best using
Jaws 14? I have Windows 8.1. Is there a difference between gmail and others
 for ease of use?

 Thanks.

Jaws 15 repeats information to many times at times.

2014-08-21 Thread Feliciano Godoy via Jfw
JAWS 15 on win 8.1 repeats information to her three times at times. For
example, when I jump to in the window, it reads the title various times at
times. Where can I change the setting so it only says it once?

The school should be able to provide you with documentation.

 Hello list,

I'm studying online at Curtin Uni, Perth Western Australia. This is my first
time using Blackboard with Jaws. I've found a few documents regarding Jaws
and the Blackboard discussion board. Is there a full step by step tutorial
that will help Jaws users with Blackboard? My major problem currently is
using the E-Mail feature on Blackboard.

 Thanks in advance.
