Re: installing Chrome

2015-11-24 Thread john.falter via Jfw

I have the same configuration and I can enter settings by:
1 press alt to get into the menu.
2 arrow up to reach settings.
3 press shift plus enter.
In several seconds you will get a message saying "loading".
Then you will be able to select your settings.
Chrome seems to want shift plus enter for many links.

Stan,

That window was, I believe, a Google page where you can adjust settings. You
can go back to that page by going into the Chrome menu with the alt key,
then arrowing up to "settings" and pressing enter.

Note that on my system, I cannot get Chrome's "settings" to open ever since
I installed JAWS 17, but this doesn't appear to be a common problem. I wish
I could find a solution for myself.

Two tips:

I kept getting a warning about Chrome not being the default. I finally heard that JAWS
was telling me to press alt-shift-a. When I did so, I tabbed through to "Don't ask
again" and checked it.

Control-d works to create a favorite, but initially I couldn't edit the name
that popped up. However, you can tab to an edit field and create your own name.

In order to view an RSS feed in Google's Chrome browser it is necessary
to add the RSS Chrome Extension.

This is a very simple process and the steps are as follows:
• In your Chrome browser open
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/rss?hl=en-US

•Enter 'RSS Feed Reader' in the search box (top left)

•Press your 'Enter' key

•In the results click the '+ Add to Chrome' button next to 'RSS Feed

Hi All,

Below are the direct download links for Jaws 17 for both 32 & 64 bit
systems. Also, what's new is below the download links.

32 Bit:

http://files.freedomscientific.com/WebFiles/JAWS/J17.0.1010enu-x86.exe

64 Bit:

http://files.freedomscientific.com/WebFiles/JAWS/J17.0.1010enu-x64.exe

What's new:

JAWS 17 Features
Smart Navigation, More Efficient Interaction with Complex Web Pages and
Applications

Today and in the future, users will be faced with an increased need to work
with complex web forms, tables, and even applications that run inside of a
web browser. This will impact your day to day interactions with services
on-line such as banking and shopping, in addition to many web apps found in
both companies and government agencies. For instance, Internet Explorer can
be used to log onto a Microsoft SharePoint server to collaborate with other
co-workers and create and store documents. The new Smart NavigationT feature
is designed to make it more efficient when navigating web-based applications
with the Virtual Cursor as the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT and
CTRL+RIGHT ARROW commands move by control instead of character and word.
This makes navigation such as moving across toolbars, tab strips, and
navigation links more like navigating around a desktop application. Pressing
the Say Character, Say Word, or Say Line commands twice quickly changes to
the traditional navigation by character, word, line, sentence, and paragraph
so you can review the text of the control. Smart Navigation resumes when you
move to a different control by pressing UP or DOWN ARROW or TAB.
Alternatively, you can use the INSERT+X command to quickly toggle between
Smart Navigation and the more traditional character and word navigation
depending on the type of web site you are navigating.

For example, if you use the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys to move across a tab
strip, you might hear JAWS announce something like; "Home tab selected,"
"Insert
tab," and "Page Layout tab." If you wanted to review the items on the tab
strip character by character, press the Say Character (NUM PAD 5), Say Word
(INSERT+NUM PAD 5), or Say Line (INSERT+UP ARROW) commands twice quickly.
You can now navigate by character or word until you press DOWN ARROW to move
away from the tab strip to another control.

Smart Navigation is off by default. To turn it on, there are a few ways.

The quickest way to enable Smart Navigation is through the Startup Wizard
which automatically launches after JAWS is installed. When the wizard
starts, select the Next button until you reach the Common Options page. You
will be focused on a group of radio buttons where you can use the ARROW keys
to choose the Smart Navigation option you want to use (Controls and Tables
or Controls). Pressing TAB moves you to another group of radio buttons that
allow you to select how Forms Mode activates. For the best experience with
Smart Navigation, it is recommended that users set Forms Mode to Semi-Auto
or Manual.
This prevents JAWS from unexpectedly turning on Forms Mode while navigating
with the ARROW keys. Once you have changed the options you want, continue
selecting Next until you reach the Braille Settings page and then select
Finish to save your changes. Smart Navigation will now be enabled for any
environments that use the Virtual Cursor.

Alternatively, Smart Navigation can be configured through Settings Center or

While you are in the message, press the delete key.
You can probably use the delete key from tree view when the message you
want to delete is highlighted.

Re: Registry Cleaner

2015-10-06 Thread john.falter via Jfw

Hello Julie:
The registry is a database full of information determining how your PC
should work.

Various programs write in this database.
Installing and uninstalling programs and apps change the registry.
Sometimes uninstall doesn't remove all that was originally written to
the registry.
This makes the large registry even larger than it needs to be and leaves
old pieces that can cause your PC to be slow or even misprocess some
activity.
You might use a registry cleaner to remove unwanted fragments of
uninstalled apps and programs.

to turn it off:
1. JAWSkey plus V
2. type TEXT
3. arrow to textanalyzer
4. space bar to turn analyzer off.
5. press enter then escape.

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program;
you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that
now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can
see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where
Windows
7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, If it
ain't broke, don't fix it, apply here? I'd really honestly like to
know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in
the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning
computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in
mall?

Re: Word 2010 has been crashing lately

2015-08-05 Thread john.falter via Jfw

Hi Adrian:
In the last three months three things could have changed:
1. Word2010--not likely.
2. JAWS16--certainly including the update for Win 10.
3. Your PC--possibly if you got an unfortunate windows update or added
or removed some software.

Can you restore your pc to a point before the trouble started?

On 8/5/2015 8:36 AM, Adrian Spratt via Jfw wrote:

Hi. Word 2010 was always stable for me until the last few weeks. I've spoken to
my tech guy who says none of his clients are having this problem. I'm the only

JAWS updates and its interaction with Word and other programs running in the
background.

I'll pause typing, and Word will announce it is closing. Usually it comes back
quickly, but my focus has shifted to the top of the document. Once in a great
while it doesn't come back, and I've lost some data this way. Fortunately, I've
long made a practice of saving every few minutes, so this isn't a serious
problem, but it is a distraction.

I located online instructions for running a Word 2010 repair, but my tech guy
discourages me from taking this step because he's convinced the problem isn't
with Word.

So, my question is whether anyone else has experienced problems along these lines in recent weeks?
I'd like to contact FS and not have them come back with the standard, and I suppose understandable,
We can't replicate... and We haven't received reports..., etc.

Re: Calling All Script Writers

2015-07-28 Thread john.falter via Jfw

HelloEd:
Try this line:
TypeKey (DownArrow)
This compiled for me.
You were missing the quotes around downarrow.

On 7/27/2015 10:51 PM, Ed Marquette via Jfw wrote:

About half the time, when I need a script, what I really need is a

I am stumped with the simplest problem.

I have an application which will work fine if only I pass the down
arrow through to the application, not permitting JAWS to process
it. I know this works because I've done it manually.

So, I want a simple script, which I've assigned to Windows down
arrow.

The first script command is the ByPass command, and I think that
works.

I'm then thinking I should send the TypeKey command followed with
the parameter (DownArrow).

So the line reads:

TypeKey (DownArrow)

Well, I get a compile error on the TypeKey command.

I think I am overlooking something pretty simple.

as the parameter.

Re: doing a jaws repair

2015-06-20 Thread john.falter via Jfw

Re: JAWS Repair David Whitehead 12/23/2013 9:33… xpc

The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.
Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12 13 14 15.
1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into
the main root of the C drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of J11.0.1430-32bit.exe into the main
root of the C drive. To open the main root of the C drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the C drive open.
2. With the Jaws .exe pasted into the C drive, highlight the .exe ,
and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executable into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ,
C:\ without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to
take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following /type
repair without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line
of text should look / read like.

C:\J15.0.5056ENU-64bit.exe /type repair

Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces,
Forward back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of
the title and press enter to start the repair.

With so much good Internet advice flying around on this list lately,
I thought I would raise a question that has been bugging me.

I use PlaceMarkers frequently, especially with Web applications that
I use all the time, including a document management Web App that I
access (keep loaded all the time) daily.

I'm wondering if there is a strategy to ensure that PlaceMarkers
always work. Frankly, the PlaceMarkers I have set tend to remain,
but the k key, which is supposed serially to jump from placeMarker to
PlaceMarker often skips PlaceMarkers that I know are there.
Sometimes, after JAWS has skipped over a PlaceMarker I can hit shift
K to go backwards, and sometimes JAWS will find the shy PlaceMarker.
Sometimes it does not.

Years ago, I had the same problem with WindowEyes, and have been
assuming that PlaceMarkers are just flakey and not terribly reliable
because of the peculiarities of the Net.

No one has told me that, and it occurred to me that I perhaps am
doing something wrong.

Here is what I do:

1. Press Control plus windows plus K

2. Choose Add PlaceMarker

3. accept the default name, link to text, use the default text (if I
know it is going to be constant), and choose domain only if I know
the element will always be on screen within the application.

Linking to text seems like it ought to increase the reliability of
the PlaceMarker, but I do not think that is true. Is it possible
that the opposite is true?

I think I'm making the right choice in indicating when it should be
linked to the domain instead of the specific page, but perhaps my
thinking is backwards.

If everyone else has the same reliability issues, then I'll continue
with my thought that PlaceMarkers are just flakey.

Re: Firefox problem starting today

2015-04-11 Thread john.falter via Jfw

Hi Adrian :
Thanks for the alert.
I used Firefox this morning with no problems.
Then I got a notice wanting me to upgrade to the next version.
I'll wait a while before buying that trouble.
What were you doing when FF failed?
Can you do anything without the failure?

On 4/11/2015 9:06 AM, Adrian Spratt via Jfw wrote:

Is anyone else having problems this morning with Firefox? It keeps failing, and
bringing down JAWS with it until I press insert-alt-F4. Following online
instructions, I've attempted a refresh, but it solved the problem only
temporarily. I note that there is a new sync feature, and I'm wondering if this
could be the cause. If so, has anyone attempted to update Firefox sync. Any
tips?

Hi Brad:
It seems to me that the user interface for Google Maps and Mapquest

those companies think their users will like.

Hi Bill:
I tried the same procedure and got no good results.
For several releases those changes we were advised to make were already
made and still no joy.

The JAWS cursor seemsto work well in Thunderbird, but not in Firefox.
Some Firefox links don't work for JAWS or NVDA.

Going to the about:config in Firefox,
Change the
gfx.direct2d.disabled with a default value of False.
to true
Change the
layers.acceleration.disabled with a default value of False.
to true.

However this still only gives me a couple of graphic symbols when trying to
read with the JAWS cursor.

Is there something else which needs to be changed in the newest versions of
Firefox to allow reading with the JAWS cursor, or is it now an impossibility?

Thank you.

new Thunderbird versions? On a side note, I'm having some issues using

short, is Thunderbird 31 funky with JAWS 15, or is it me?

Re: Can't access web pages

Hello Gezim:
I have no idea why you can't open some websites, but one thing you can
do is to restore your system to before the windows update.

First try to determine how far back to restore.
press the windows key
type check
arrow down to check for updates and press enter.
Tab to Update history and find the date of the last update.
Then restore your system.
press the windows key.
type restore.
Follow the directions.
If you've never done this before, find a friend to walk you through the
process or get your pc to a repair shop.

Hello:
JAWSKEY plus 3 (the 3 above the letter e on the keyboard) allows keys

I'm not experiencing the repeat problem you're having. Note that Firefox went
to version 31 just yesterday. You can check which version you have by pressing JAWS

Good morning everyone I am having problems with Firefox and I have windows 8.1
Jaws 15 and the latest Firefox.

First I yesterday had some help from a friend to help set up Firefox and Google
Advance search and we got a message it couldn’t find it so we went to internet
Explore and did the same thing and we were able to add it. I am at the point of
wanting to learn to do searches and Firefox is my main user for the net but it
seems to be giving me problems.

If you know a setting please give steps in an easy way for me to follow.

Does others find that Firefox repeat things like when you open it. Echo is off
my friend checked and turned that off. Is there anything in Jaws to help with
this? If I haven’t written this for you to understand please ask questions and
I will answer Louise and Hawk

Firefox and Internet Explorer are virtually interoperable with JAWS.

The bigger question is, on what operating system are you running IE that
your university suspects security problems? In fact, Microsoft just released
some security-fix patches this past week for IE version
11 on Windows 7, which makes me think your college is still on XP, or an
older version (perhaps 9?) of Internet Explorer.

I'm seriously considering making the switch to firefox, and would like
to know how much of a transition this will be in terms of basic
internet navigation.

Does Jaws operate in basically the same way with Firefox as it does
with Internet Explorer?

In other words, to the same basic Jaws key strokes and commands work
with Firefox?

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 14 here.

Thank you!

Re: Attributes

2014-05-16 Thread john.falter via Jfw

Hi Adrian:
There are two ways to change the behavior, and they are not consistent:
The first way is to use the space bar to cycle between 21 different schemes.
The other is to modify an existing scheme by pressing the space bar.
That'sthe method I didn't want to try.

I did try the cycling approach, and the default is CLASSIC.

On 5/16/2014 8:36 AM, Adrian Spratt via Jfw wrote:

John,

Thank you for looking into this, and I'm glad you didn't take the risk of
opening the classic scheme.

The behavior on my system seems different. For example, pressing the right arrow on
speech and sounds in the settings center does nothing. However, pressing
either enter or spacebar activates it, one way or the other. I'm having difficulty
establishing consistency.

So, I've just downloaded FS's training module on speech and sounds. I'm long
overdue in figuring out this aspect of JAWS.

How were you experimenting with sounds?
If you open settings center, and press s until you reach speech and
sounds, arrow to the right to open, you will see three sub-selections.
the first selection lets you select one of 21 speech settings.
The third selection lets you modify one of those 21 speech settings.
As to clickable and mouseover, try the JAWS dictionary. You could
substitute a sound or blank for those words.
I looked into settings center, but I didn't want to risk accidentally
changing any of my schemes.

Any suggestions for how I can stop these verbalizations?

My object was to stop JAWS saying clickable and mouseover without cutting

Just got back from a holiday, found there was a Jaws update and
stupidly did it. Using latest Jaws, Word 2013 as well.

Why on earth does the tab key not work now? I am on a work deadline,
and spent endless time only to discover that a normal tab is now done
with shift-tab. Who would have dreamed that one up? Very backward.

In Word, control-E to center text no longer works for me. Is this a
Word change or a Jaws screw-up? I also find I can no longer use the
normal tab or shift-tab in dialogue boxes. If I want to recheck a
field, I have to cycle around again with the very frustrrating shift-tab.

Sorry, I’m way behind on list messages as I’ve been away. Sorry if
this has been talked about already. Is there something I can do to fix
this other than going back to a previous Jaws version and registering
my dissatisfaction with FS?
