Matthew 20:26-28 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Luke 2:51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. Innocense Day 13 Of David. Grant me justice, LORD! I have walked without blame. In the LORD I have trusted; I have not faltered. Test me, LORD, and try me; search my heart and mind. Your love is before my eyes; I walk guided by your faithfulness. I do not sit with deceivers, nor with hypocrites do I mingle. I hate the company of evildoers; with the wicked I do not sit. I will wash my hands in innocence and walk round your altar, LORD, Lifting my voice in thanks, recounting all your wondrous deeds. Innocense Day 11 LORD, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy mountain? Whoever walks without blame, doing what is right, speaking truth from the heart; Who does not slander a neighbor, does no harm to another, never defames a friend; Who disdains the wicked, but honors those who fear the LORD; Who keeps an oath despite the cost, lends no money at interest, accepts no bribe against the innocent. [JOYnet] Innocence
Hello all! With all the talk of Grand parents I feel all of you have forgotten that the topic for the fortnight is innocence. But when I read all these mails of grandparents I go back to my childhood and how we enjoyed life to the fullest. Think those mails work well with the topic for the second part of March Innocence! My younger son Georgie is just 6 months old. When I get back from office he will be waiting with his amma to welcome me at the door. The joy in his face when he sees me is something I cant describe in words. Got to see it. He just wants to jump to me. Some days I will be talking to Josh my elder son and then only get time to look up to him. He will wait till I look up to him to give that innocent smile of his. With our heavenly Father our roles and way we behave are different. He is looking on to us all the time. Always watching us and waiting for that moment when we finally decide to look up at Him (mostly with a petition or complaint!). Still He loves us children. Most of the time we are overwhelmed with the happenings around us we forget to see our God as a loving Dad. Let us renew our innocent, love-filled relation to our heavenly Dad during this fortnight when we are focusing on this topic of innocence. He loved us first ...let us love him back. Take care and God bless Abraham Fujairah, UAE Today's verse Mark 10:13-15 And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Verse for 21/03/03 Luke 18:17 Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Verse for 20/03/03 Mathew 18:4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] Saint of the day - St. Dominic Savio
March 10, 2003 St. Dominic Savio (d. 1857) So many holy persons seem to die young. Among them was Dominic Savio, the patron of choirboys. Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined St. John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12. He impressed John with his desire to be a priest and to help him in his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate Conception which, besides being devotional, aided John Bosco with the boys and with manual work. All the members save one, Dominic, would in 1859 join John in the beginnings of his Salesian congregation. By that time, Dominic had been called home to heaven. As a youth, Dominic spent hours rapt in prayer. His raptures he called my distractions. Even in play, he said that at times It seems heaven is opening just above me. I am afraid I may say or do something that will make the other boys laugh. Dominic would say, I can't do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest thing, to be for the greater glory of God. Dominic's health, always frail, led to lung problems and he was sent home to recuperate. As was the custom of the day, he was bled in the thought that this would help, but it only worsened his condition. He died on March 9, 1857, after receiving the Last Sacraments. St. John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life. Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint. St. Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead with his cause. Dominic was canonized in 1954. Comment: Like many a youngster, Dominic was painfully aware that he was different from his peers. He tried to keep his piety from his friends lest he have to endure their laughter. Even after his death, his youth marked him as a misfit among the saints and some argued that he was too young to be canonized. Pius X wisely disagreed. For no one is too youngor too old or too anything elseto achieve the holiness to which we are all called. -- Hello all! Happy feast day to all the Dominics in this group. Let us also specially remember in our prayers today, Christeen and similar activities around the world that through the intercession of St Dominic all these movements will be able to guide teeenagers and youth towards Lord our God. Take care and God bless Abraham, Fujairah, UAE. === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] Saint of the day - St. John of God
March 8, 2003 St. John of God (1495-1550) Having given up active Christian belief while a soldier, John was 40 before the depth of his sinfulness began to dawn on him. He decided to give the rest of his life to Gods service, and headed at once for Africa, where he hoped to free captive Christians and, possibly, be martyred. He was soon advised that his desire for martyrdom was not spiritually well based, and returned to Spain and the relatively prosaic activity of a religious goods store. Yet he was still not settled. Moved initially by a sermon of Blessed John of Avila, he one day engaged in a public beating of himself, begging mercy and wildly repenting for his past life. Committed to a mental hospital for these actions, John was visited by Blessed John, who advised him to be more actively involved in tending to the needs of others rather than in enduring personal hardships. John gained peace of heart, and shortly after left the hospital to begin work among the poor. He established a house where he wisely tended to the needs of the sick poor, at first doing his own begging. But excited by the saints great work and inspired by his devotion, many people began to back him up with money and provisions. Among them were the archbishop and marquis of Tarifa. Behind Johns outward acts of total concern and love for Christs sick poor was a deep interior prayer life which was reflected in his spirit of humility. These qualities attracted helpers who, 20 years after Johns death, formed the Brothers Hospitallers, now a worldwide religious order. John became ill after 10 years of service but tried to disguise his ill health. He began to put the hospitals administrative work into order and appointed a leader for his helpers. He died under the care of a spiritual friend and admirer, Lady Anne Ossorio. Comment: The utter humility of John of God, which led to a totally selfless dedication to others, is most impressive. Here is a man who realized his nothingness in the face of God. The Lord blessed him with the gifts of prudence, patience, courage, enthusiasm and the ability to influence and inspire others. He saw that in his early life he had turned away from the Lord, and, moved to receive his mercy, John began his new commitment to love others in openness to Gods love. Quote: The archbishop called John of God to him in response to a complaint that he was keeping tramps and immoral women in his hospital. In submission John fell on his knees and said: The Son of Man came for sinners, and we are bound to seek their conversion. I am unfaithful to my vocation because I neglect this, but I confess that I know of no bad person in my hospital except myself alone, who am indeed unworthy to eat the bread of the poor. The archbishop could only trust in Johns sincerity and humility, and dismissed him with deep respect. === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] Generosity - rules set out by St. Ignatius for Alms giving
As for those who in the present are are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. I Timothy 6: 17 - 19 Hello All! Now that we are into the Generosity fortnight thought I would share what I came across regarding this topic. There are certain rules set out by St. Ignatius in his Spiritual Exercises regarding alms giving. I will paste the first rule word for word and then summarize the others, as it is a bit long. 1. If I make the distribution to relatives or friends, or to persons for whom I have an affection, I shall have four things to see to, of which mention was made, in part, in the matter of Election. The first is, that that love which moves me and makes me give the alms, should descend from above, from the love of God our Lord, so that I feel first in me that the love, more or less, which I have to such persons is for God; and that in the reason why I love them more, God appears. St. Ignatius then asks us to bring into mind a person who has been given the job of distribution. He asks us to bring to mind what all qualities that we will see in that man, whose job is distribution for the greater glory of God and greater perfection of his soul. St. Ignatius asks us to use this person as the yardstick in our acts of distribution. (Rule 2) Other standards suggested by the St. Ignatius are our achievements in our office of distribution At the time of death and (rule 3) On the day of Judgment (rule 4) He asks us to bring to mind what we want to be at these situations and to keep them now. The fifth rule set out by him is pasted below 5. When some person feels himself inclined and drawn to some persons to whom he wants to distribute alms, let him hold himself back and ponder well the above-mentioned four Rules, examining and testing his affection by them; and not give the alms until, conformably to them, he has in all dismissed and cast out his disordered inclination. St. Ignatius suggests the use of the same rules for persons who are in the ministry of distributing goods of God our Lord so as to avoid confusions regarding quantity of what he/she has to take and apply to him/herself out of what he/she has to give to others. Finally he asks us to spare more and diminish what touches ones person and condition of life and to approach more to our High Priest, our model and rule who is Christ our Lord. He cites the example of St. Joachim and of St. Ann, who, dividing their means into three parts, gave the first to the poor, and the second to the ministry and service of the Temple, and took the third for the support of themselves and of their household. As Michelle in her mail pointed out the Ignatian retreat is really good for the betterment of our spiritual life. There is series (13 talks) on the EWTN audio library Ignatian Retreat: The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola - Fr. Raymond Gawronski S.J. which is excellent. Wishing you a joyful season of prayer, fasting and ALMS GIVING. Take care and God bless Abraham Fujairah, UAE. === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] Bible Calendar 16-28 Feb - Simplicity
Hello All! The new topic in our bible calendar is Simplicity. I will post the readings for today and yesterday here. So let us start on this topic. Hope all of you will contribute for it is all about being simple :). My younger son is only 4 months old and I am reminded of him after reading through the quotes I pasted below. He is happy and gives beautiful innocent smiles when he is fed, played with and talked to and he howls when no one is near or when he is hungry. Let us also be like him in our relationship with Abba Father. Let us also smile and give praise to him for he unlike our physical parents is always with us. Take care and God bless Abraham Fujairah, UAE. 1 Peter 2 1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, Luke 18 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] It's good, it's good, it's good to give thanks to the Lord
Hello all! Yesterday four of my JY friends came to my place for dinner and they brought a tray of chocolates for my elder son, Josh. He forgot to say thanks to the uncle and aunt who gave him the present and happily munched one chocolate. Now his amma saw all this and asked him did you say thanks to uncle? he made a funny face and said no. Then amma insisted that he said thanks to uncle and so he came and said thanks. The whole incident reminded me that I have not made any contribution to the discussion on thankfulness. Most of the time like Josh I also forget to say thanks to our father in heaven as I more busy enjoying the blessing (gifts) that he gave me. Today when I got into the car the music again reminded me to write a mail to JOYnet ...it went its good, its good, its good to give thanks to the Lord. So here is my brief (!!) thank you note to Abba Father. My biggest thankyou is for knitting me together in my mothers womb and for protecting me all these years. Thank you Lord. Thank you Lord for my mother who carried me for nine months and that too when she had another kid, my sister who was just 3-4 months old when I was conceived in her womb. Third thank you is for my dad and mom who looked afer me in my early years helping me in my studies for all the guidance that they gave. next thanks to the Lord comes for my sister and younger brother who gave me company in my youth. We used to live in a huge family home and so together with my sibilings come my cousins in my thankyou list. I also thank the Lord for my grand parents with whom I stayed a big part of my teenage years. School was not a place I relished much but the plan of the Lord was such that I start loving it through his plan. I was a big ozhappan (lazy fellow) and it was through the prayers of my mother that I changed (and according to her the prayers of Bishop James Pazhayattil as we used to live behind the bishop palace), and you will not believe, Lord took me to a batch in the college where I was the one with highest marks and I had no other option but to buckle up and study, though it felt a lot better :). I thank Lord for planning my life. I thank also for all the teachers in school who patiently taught me and for all the teachers who encouraged me in college. Lord gave me a bunch of good friends when it mattered most and I thank him for that. When I lost my dad all of a sudden, Lord took my mom into renewal and through her example we also became part of the renewal movement in 1990. I thank Lord for allowing me to be part of this though Fr. Epraim and his team at Calicut. I thank Lord for all the days in which he protected me from danger. I used to cycle around in the busy streets/roads of Madras and many times I have heard abuses from car and lorry drivers but all those days he protected me. Here I thank the Lord for giving me Mother Mary, because it was through her intercession that I was able to to clear my exams, she helped me through one memorare then, now she helps our JY group here though the rosary, Divya Jyothi to be precise. These days I thank the Lord for my family and for the JY group here. First for giving me Pallavi as my life partner and then for the two kids he addded on to our life, Josh and Georgie (those are the name Pallavi gave, I prefer to call them Ouseppachan and Varkiachan:)). The joy that the kids are giving, even though it is tiring at times, is something we (Pallavi and me) thank the Lord for every day. The JY group here on that other hand strengthened me in my relation with Lord, I thank him again and again for these blessings. Think if I sit and type this list will never end. So let me stop, with a big thank you to the lord for this JOYful fellowship called JOYnet. Thank you Lord. Thankyou all! Its good..., its good..., its good to give thanks to the Lord Take care and God bless Abraham === This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list.
