[kio-extras] [Bug 487926] New: VLC fails to open video in smb folder if password is saved in KWallet

2024-06-02 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487926

Bug ID: 487926
Summary: VLC fails to open video in smb folder if password is
saved in KWallet
Classification: Frameworks and Libraries
   Product: kio-extras
   Version: 24.05.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Samba
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
CC: sit...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

Not sure if this is the right place to report this bug. Please, feel free to
move it to the right category.

I recently noticed that when trying to open videos from a smb shared folder,
VLC will fail saying that "Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open
the MRL 'smb:/..." if the smb user and password are saved in KWallet. I can
only reproduce this issue on a laptop connected over WiFi. In a PC connected
over ethernet (and with a fixed IP) it always works. Not sure if it's relevant,
but just in case someone tries to reproduce the issue.

Also, this is not a regression, it also happens with Plasma 6.0.5, not just in
Plasma 6.1 Beta.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a shared folder with Dolphin writing smb:///
2. Type user and password when asked and click on "Remember password"
3. Try to open video from shared folder with VLC (it works)
4. Reboot computer (or exit session and login back)
5. Open same folder with Dolphin (no user or password is asked as expected)
6. Try to open the same video with VLC (now it fails)
7. Open KWalletManager, search "smb" and delete the entry with the user and
password for that shared folder
8. Repeat the steps above, and now it works again
9. If in step 2, password is not saved, and user and password are manually
introduced every time, VLC always work

OBSERVED RESULT
VLC can't open videos if user and password are saved in KWallet. Other video
players always work (e.g. Dragon Player or mpv).

EXPECTED RESULT
VLC should also work all the times.

On more thing I just discover. If I run `systemctl --user restart

after that commit, and after a system reboot, it doesn´t work. The service has
to be manually restarted.

OBSERVED RESULT
After upgrading to Plasma 6.1 Beta I get this error message (visible with
journalctl -p err):

kwin_wayland[1181]: kwin_nightlight: Error in time calculation. Deactivating
Night Light.

But the night color seems to work just fine... The error happens always exactly
one minute before the end of the transition duration.

I attach a screenshot with my configuration of the Night Light. So in my case,
I configured the to change the color at 22:30 for 30 mins, and the error
happened at 22:29:59.

SUMMARY

I think I was never able to control my external monitor (Dell U2518D)
brightness from Plasma, so I was surprised to see it in the "Brightness and
Color" applet after updating to Plasma 6.1 Beta. Super cool feature! It is way
faster than using the screen built-in menu.

Unfortunately, even though it works perfectly after booting, it becomes a bit
unreliable over time. It has happened already a few times but I still couldn't
manage to find an exact series of steps to reproduce the issue.

At some point, the slider doesn't do anything any more. Other times, the
brightness is changed to the very minimum, and after that trying to move the
slides shows weird values like "inf%" or "nan%".

I'm happy to help debug this since probably it's a very hardware specific
thing, but perhaps someone else can replicate the issue with other monitors?

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start Plasma
2. Lock the screen a few times
3. Turn off and on the monitor a few times
4. Wait and repeat previous steps

OBSERVED RESULT
Brightness control at some point stops working

EXPECTED RESULT
Brightness control is reliable

--- Comment #6 from Iyán Méndez Veiga ---
Hi David,

Regarding point one I already added a comment because I couldn't update the
original description. Indeed, when it works, the slides is in the "Brightness
and Color" applet.

I first noticed the issues with the package provided by Arch Linux in the
[kde-unstable] repo, which if I do `pacman -Ql powerdevil | grep plugins` lists
the following:

powerdevil /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/
powerdevil /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/plasma/
powerdevil /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/plasma/kcms/
powerdevil /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/plasma/kcms/systemsettings/

powerdevil /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/powerdevil/action/powerdevil_runscriptaction.so
powerdevil
/usr/lib/qt6/plugins/powerdevil/action/powerdevil_suspendsessionaction.so

For the git bisect I used the exact same PKGBUILD just changing the source to
use the git repo and forcing the commit given by git bisect. Each build was
done in a clean env using the [kde-unstable] repo (with
kde-unstable-x86_64-build). And I was checking for the three issues.

KMail with monochromatic icon with unread emails

SUMMARY
Several apps, such as KMail or Konversation, use the colorful icons in the
system tray when there are no new emails or notifications, but they change to
the monochromatic version when they change status.

I hope this is not intentional and it's a regression form KF5 -> KF6, because
it looks super weird to have icons change style depending on the status. Also,
if that's on purpose, I think it should be the other way around, since the
color version brings more attention to the user than the monochromatic one.

I attach two screenshots where you can see "this bug" affecting the KMail icon.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take a screenshot with Konversation in the other
status, but I guess it's easy to reproduce.

By the way, I can observe the issue both with Qt 6.6 and Qt 6.7.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open KMail
2. Mark any email as unread

OBSERVED RESULT
Switch between colorful and monochromatic icons

EXPECTED RESULT
Monochromatic icons should always be used in the system tray

I guess it's because Neon Testing uses the plasma/6.0 branch instead of the
version tarballs,
[yesterday](https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/commit/e516aed7790df74f5d8930efc348a78bc14ad11e)
the version was already changed to 6.0.2, which will be released next week.

Can you check that [the
patch](https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/commit/ebce0e3c3371fbc5a59955c91873edca1b6e4e79)
was applied in Neon.

I still didn't update to 6.0.1, but I will confirm once it is available in
Arch. However, KWin 6.0.0 in Arch includes the previous patch that fixed the

I guess you mean 6.0.1?

The patch works in my case, I cannot replicate any more with scale of 125%.

I don't think this is the same bug. That old bug was always in the wrong
position, while this is only when connecting external monitors and also not
100% reproducible. But sure, I will try again with the release of Plasma 6. If

[kde] [Bug 481723] New: All OSD notifications displaced during and after disconnecting external monitor

2024-02-23 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481723

Bug ID: 481723
Summary: All OSD notifications displaced during and after
disconnecting external monitor
Classification: I don't know
   Product: kde
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

All OSD notifications (volume, screen brightness, etc.) are displaced from
their usual position after I connected an external monitor (configured to
extend to the left). I attach one screenshot to show the current position of
the notifications. The wrong position continued even after disconnecting the
external monitor.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Attach external monitor
2. Try to change brightness, volume, etc.
3. Disconnect external monitor
4. Try again to change brightness, volume, etc.

OBSERVED RESULT
OSD notifications are not centered and close to bottom as usual

EXPECTED RESULT
OSD notifications should, in my opinion, only be displayed in main display. If
a laptop is connected to an external monitor or projector, OSD should only be
visible in the laptop, unless the built-in screen is disabled or, of course, in
unify output mode. Why? Imagine the setup of a laptop connected to a public
projector. Changing the brightness only affects the built-in screen and it is
distracting for the people watching the projector (slides, video, etc.).

In any case, after removing any external screen, the position of OSD
notifications should be correct on the built-in screen.

The bug still manifests. I was not sure if the rule was matching so I tested
with settings fullscreen force set to yes. In that case, all Zoom windows are
indeed fullscreen, including the share screen one (without the bug in this
case). But with "obey geometry restrictions" set to no, I still have the same

SUMMARY
The new style do show the screens in the Display Configuration has a beautiful
blue grading in the bottom. However, this grading uses the whole area of the
screen for certain scale level or for different system settings window's size.

It is hard to explain by words so here is a video of the issue:
https://drive.switch.ch/index.php/s/eLgHpLympTDaxxl

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open System Settings -> Display & Monitor
2. Change the window size
3. Change the scale level

OBSERVED RESULT
The blue grading changes with both the window size and the scale level, even
without applying the new settings.

EXPECTED RESULT
Style should remain the same no matter the scale or window size

> By "x1", I meant a scale factor of 1
Sorry, my bad. No, also in Wayland with 100% I cannot reproduce the issue. It
only happens with certain fractional scale levels. For example, 125% triggers
changing the width, while 150% triggers changing the height, although that
finish early because I guess the window has some hardcoded maximum height.

Here is a new video testing different scale levels:
https://drive.switch.ch/index.php/s/R04sQcItuKyc83S

The video also shows two other (minor) issues:
1. Two mouses are recorded in Wayland
2. The blue line in the display configuration for some scales is a thin bottom
line, but others is a grading using all the rectangle space.

 Component: general
  Assignee: dolphin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
CC: kfm-de...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
In Plasma 5.x, with the option "Remember display style for each folder" would
remember the sort by for each folder. For example, it was possible to have the
home directory sorted by Name and the Desktop and Downloads by Modified.

In Plasma 6 RC 2, these settings seem to be hardcoded and cannot be changed.
All folders are sorted by Name except Downloads which is sorted by Modified
time. Any changes are lost after closing Dolphin.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Dolphin
2. Change option in Settings -> View -> Display Style
3. Change sort order of Desktop and Downloads folder
4. Close Dolphin and open again

OBSERVED RESULT
How folders are sorted is not saved anymore. Other things like view mode do
work.

EXPECTED RESULT
Sort option should be saved as part of the display style.

SUMMARY
When trying to share a screen or a window, a Screen Sharing dialog appears
showing the available sources. For example, when selecting a new screen source
in OBS Studio, the user can select a physical monitor, a rectangular area or a
new virtual output.

These boxes have a click box on the top right corner. If the user click on
those, the tick is shown but the share button is grayed out and disabled. Only
clicking on the content area works (and also changes the click box).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open OBS Studio (or any other app that allows to share screen)
2. Add a new source
3. Select Screen Capture (PipeWire)
4. Play with the Screen Sharing window

OBSERVED RESULT
When clicking on the box directly, the share button is not enabled.

EXPECTED RESULT
User can click the box or the content. Both options should mark the desired
source and enable the share button.

SUMMARY
This is a funny issue. I don't know if it's caused by Qt 6.7 or by some changes
in Plasma 6. I also remember having a similar issue with Inkscape in the past
before it started to work correctly as a native Wayland app, so probably this
only affects XWayland apps.

When opening certain windows (e.g., the "Share screen" window during a call),
they enlarge continuously and indefinitely without user interaction. It's hard
to describe so I will try to record a video later. The window first starts to
expand to the right of the desktop. Once it reaches the end of the screen, it
starts to push the window to the left so it gives the impression the app is
expanding to the left. When all the width is used, the window continues to
expand to the right outside the screen range.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Zoom (probably other XWayland apps suffer from this issue too)
2. Start a call
3. Open Share screen window

OBSERVED RESULT
What is described above, the window continuously expands its width to the
right.

EXPECTED RESULT
Window has a fixed size unless the user manually changes it

SUMMARY
When an emoji is clicked in the Emoji Selector app, a small pop-up on the

does not show most emojis correctly because they are rendered with a font that
does not support all the emojis available in the Emoji Selector.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Emoji Selector
2. Select a few different emojis

OBSERVED RESULT
Some emojis are shown in the pop-up in a text-only black and white version.
When there is no such version, an empty box appears instead.

EXPECTED RESULT
Either remove the emoji from the pop-up notification and just say "Emoji copied
to the clipboard" or render the full color emoji correctly.

2024-02-17 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481456

Bug ID: 481456
Summary: VLC fullscreen not working with Plasma 6
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 5.93.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
CC: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY

(Please, move this report to the correct category. I had no idea where to
report it, but I think it's important because is one of those issues that most
users can notice in the first 15 minutes of using Plasma)

When double clicking on the video or selecting Video -> Fullscreen, VLC changes
to "fullscreen mode" (e.g. the control panel to play, pause, etc. becomes
visible at the bottom of the screen) but the video remains within the frame of
the window instead of actually using the whole screen. I don't have this issue
with Plasma 5.27.10 also running on Wayland.

Perhaps this is an issue with how Plasma 6 handles XWayland apps?

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a video with VLC
2. Double click on the video

OBSERVED RESULT
Fullscreen is not working

EXPECTED RESULT
It should work as in Plasma 5.x

Closing because it is not a bug. I was so unlucky that when I was testing the
RC 2 the access point(s) in the office were down so I was connected to a
farther AP and whenever I closed the lid the signal was even worse and that's
the reason I was getting disconnected. Couldn't replicate the issue at home and
today at the office AP close to my spot was working again. Sorry for the noise.

Exactly, that was it! I changed the "default" options (weird -1) to Noto Color
Emoji and now everything works as expected. By the way, this also fixed the
issue on my PC running Plasma 5.25.10. How could that setting got that weird

If I select Noto Color Emoji, then the emoji works but also some normal
characters like numbers are shown with emojis (I will attach a screenshot), so
this font is not really usable. This issue I already had with Plasma 5.x and I
put screenshots in the Matrix #Plasma room some time ago. I'm using Hack 10pt
for the profile. For some reason, Yakuake takes the emojis from a font that
includes them while Konsole cannot, even though both are using the same
profile.

I think it's better to have "Show confirmation" or something like that. I don't

[systemsettings] [Bug 481234] New: Confusing info message without clear action

2024-02-11 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga

  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: kcm_powerdevil
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
CC: k...@privat.broulik.de, natalie_clar...@yahoo.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
If the "Stop charging at" option in the "Charge Limit" section is higher than
85%, an info message is shown saying that «Regularly charging the battery close
to 100%, or fully discharging it, may accelerate deterioration of battery
health. By limiting the maximum battery charge, you can help extend the battery
lifespan.»

Leaving aside the accuracy of the message, I think that the message should come
together with a clear action or suggestion to the user. For example, a button
that changes the "stop charging at" to 85% or a recommendation at the end of
the text. Otherwise, the user has to go through a "trial and error" to remove
the message.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Go to System Settings -> Energy Saving -> Advanced Power Settings
2. Info message is shown by default because charging limit is 100% by default.

OBSERVED RESULT
There is no clear action for the user. Only the text "by limiting the maximum
battery charge". Then the user has to try to reduce this from 100% to a lower
value until the message is gone. Why 85% and not 90% or 80%?

EXPECTED RESULT
Such a info text with a warning about hardware damage should come with a more
clear and direct instruction action for the user to apply the change.

[systemsettings] [Bug 481225] New: Some ideas to improve the interface to change the custom times

  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
The new interface to change custom times when night and day colors begin feels
a bit weird. I asked a few different friends and family members and here I
summarize some ideas to improve it.

First, the top bar looks super good and it's the first thing the user tries to
use. However, as it is, it only shows information, but it is not interactive.
Why not allow the user to drag the limits there directly to change the custom
times? If this is possible, perhaps it is even okay to remove the time fields
below.

Hour numbers in the bar look also a bit weird, specially the zero. Why not 24
so it's clear? Or 00, 01, 02, etc.? Or use the locale settings and use 24h or
12 am/pm format. The am/pm text can be shown on top of there is no space
together with the numbers

Finally, in the two fields to change the time, the first thing all users try to
do is to delete the numbers, but this is not possible. I think at least, the
delete key should move the position to the left. The user has to use the arrow
or click at the beginning of the number to introduce the time. I think these
fields should be more intuitive and feel more responsive. Probably this is not
a thing to improve here but on Qt or Frameworks.

[plasmashell] [Bug 481223] New: Change default layout for external screens

2024-02-11 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481223

Bug ID: 481223
Summary: Change default layout for external screens
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 5.93.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
CC: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
Historically, default layout in Desktop Settings has always been "Folder View".
I understand the reason for this: users coming from other OS such as Windows or
macOS would expect their Desktop files to be visible directly in their desktop.

However, I think this is not the correct layout for external monitors for
privacy reasons. Same as the default mode is not "unify outputs" but to extend
the desktop, I think the default layout should be "Desktop" with the default
Plasma background (ideally, this could be even configurable) so that user's
desktop files are not shown.

At least, since the multi-screen in Plasma 6 works reliably, it is possible to
connect the external screen, change the layout, background, etc. and next time
the same screen is connected, these settings are restored. However, in some
situations (e.g, connecting a laptop to a new projector during a meeting) it is
not possible to prepare the setup in advance.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect a Plasma 6 laptop to a new external screen

OBSERVED RESULT
All files in desktop are leaked to the audience

EXPECTED RESULT
Only a plain desktop background is shown. The user has to actively change to
"unify outputs" or manually change the layout to "Folder view" for that to
happen.

[kwin] [Bug 481222] New: Restore native screen resolution after detaching external monitor in unify output mode

2024-02-11 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481222

Bug ID: 481222
Summary: Restore native screen resolution after detaching
external monitor in unify output mode
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.93.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: multi-screen
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
First of all, a big THANK YOU for all the hard work and improvements around the
multi-screen support. Plasma 5.x always felt a bit unreliable when connecting
external screens. The RC 2 already feels much much better. Specially the "unify
output" mode, which was quite broken in Plasma 5.x in my opinion.

After playing around with different setups, I only notice one small bug. My
laptop has a 16:10 screen. When I connect at 16:9 external monitor and I change
to "unify outputs" mode, the resolutions (correctly!) changes to a 16:9 one.
There are some black bands in the built-in laptop screen (as it should!) and
the external screen shows exactly the same as the laptop without any artifacts
as it happens with Plasma 5.27.10.

However, when detaching the external monitor, the 16:9 resolution is kept
instead of restoring the native 16:10 one.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Select native 16:10 resolution on a laptop (in my case 1920x1200)
2. Attach an external 16:9 monitor (in my case I tried with a 1920x1080 one)
3. Switch to "unify outputs" mode
4. Detach external screen

OBSERVED RESULT
Laptop keeps the 1920x1080 (16:9) resolution with black bands on the top and
bottom edges

EXPECTED RESULT
Laptop should switch back to its native 16:10 resolution before the "unify
outputs" mode was enabled

Audio panel

SUMMARY
With Plasma 5.x I could select HDMI directly from the Audio panel in the system
tray and it would switch immediately. With exactly the same setup, and only
updating to Plasma 6 RC 2 (same pipewire version, kernel, docking station,
etc.), this doesn't work for me anymore. Audio is not send correctly to HDMI
device as before.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Attack laptop to docking station (I'm using Thunderbolt 4)
2. HDMI audio shows correctly in the audio panel
3. Selecting HDMI removes audio from laptop's built-in speakers, but audio is
not played in the monitor

OBSERVED RESULT
Not working as with Plasma 5.x

EXPECTED RESULT
Audio panel correctly switches audio to HDMI entry

[Powerdevil] [Bug 481215] New: Wifi stops working with laptop lid closed

2024-02-11 Thread Iyán Méndez Veiga
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481215

Bug ID: 481215
Summary: Wifi stops working with laptop lid closed
Classification: Plasma
   Product: Powerdevil
   Version: 5.93.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: m...@iyanmv.com
CC: m...@ratijas.tk, natalie_clar...@yahoo.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
First of all, sorry if this is not the right category for this bug.

Wifi on my laptop stops working when the lid is closed. This is the case when I
connect it to a docking station. With Plasma 5.x I had no issues. With Plasma 6
RC2, first the network is disconnected, then no wifi shows up in the network
panel.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect to wifi
2. Connect laptop to docking station
3. Keep lid open
4. Close lid

OBSERVED RESULT
Wifi works just fine with lid open, but it disconnects the moment the lid is
closed. Opening the lid again fixes the issue, even if screen is disabled and
only external screen is used.

EXPECTED RESULT
Closing lid should not affect network at all.

Yes, exactly, it's only between the panel and the window, but ONLY XWayland

As a side comment, I've seen several similar issues in the last months (I think
since Plasma 5.25). Maybe is it possible to include some unit tests for the
different scaling cases? Probably it fits the "Automate And Systematize
Internal Processes" goal, no? The thing is that these issues are hard to debug,
but very noticeable by affected users. Maybe for Plasma 6.0?
