[neon] [Bug 486424] New: USB drive corrupts itself if you edit pictures too quickly

2024-05-01 Thread Steve Zakulec
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486424

Bug ID: 486424
Summary: USB drive corrupts itself if you edit pictures too
quickly
Classification: KDE Neon
   Product: neon
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: neon-b...@kde.org

https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports
***

SUMMARY
If you edit photos quickly enough on an external drive, eventually the file
listing shows less files than you started with even if you did no delete
options.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Put a large number (68 or so in my case) of TIFF scans on an NTFS-formatted
USB stick. You can download https://archive.org/details/Ford-Times-May-1978 and
extract the CBZ file to a drive to recreate my setup.
2. Open the first file in Gwenview.
3. Make any crop to that file and save it.
4. Using the keyboard shortcuts for crop & save, edit photos until you either
wrap around to the first photo, or you notice that the number of files Gwenview
shows in the folder is not the number you started with.

OBSERVED RESULT
You end up with a USB drive with corruption- files that were present are now no
longer accessible until you repair the drive in Windows with ChkDsk.

EXPECTED RESULT
You should be able to crop the entire set of files without the drive corrupting
itself.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: KDE neon 6.0
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.1.0
Qt Version: 6.7.0
Kernel Version: 6.5.0-28-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

Memory: 7.6 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 520
Manufacturer: LENOVO
Product Name: 80SA
System Version: LENOVO_IDEAPAD

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I also filed this as https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481470, since I
wasn't sure at the time if this was a Gwenview or KDE Neon bug- that has
additional information.

USB Drive is a Kingston Technology DataTraveler Max, ID 0951:177f, formatted
NTFS.

I also have the error reports from checking the disk on a Windows laptop, and
then repairing after errors were found.

Hi, seemingly editing enough photos from an external USB drive in Gwenview will
eventually cause the drive to have missing files, and no longer show all of the
drive's files unless you run a filesystem check.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Put a large number (68 or so in my case) of TIFF scans on an NTFS-formatted
USB stick. You can download https://archive.org/details/Ford-Times-May-1978 and
extract the CBZ file to a drive to recreate my setup.
2. Open up the first file in Gwenview, and crop as desired.
3. Keep cropping successive files until Gwenview shows you the first file

OBSERVED RESULT
Gwenview unexpectedly wraps around to the first file before you've gone through
all the files on the disk, and checking the disk shows files missing from the
drive.

EXPECTED RESULT
You can safely crop all of the files, and everything is still present on the
drive at the end.

If you set printer options in System settings, Printers, Configure, those
aren't picked by KDE applications when you go to print, and choose Print
options.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install printer
2. Configure printer options in System settings and change from A4 to Letter,
and click OK.
3. Open up Kate, type something, then go to Print, select the printer that was
set to Letter, click Properties, and check Page size under Paper.

OBSERVED RESULT
Paper size is set to A4 despite the printer having been set to Letter size, and
the system page size is set to Letter by the locale.

EXPECTED RESULT
Any KDE program picks up the correct paper size once it has been set on the
printer configuration.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The printer is a RICOH_SP C250SF, set up over IPP.
This issue also shows up in Okular if you open any PDF, go to print, and choose
Properties next to the printer that's configured to print Letter.
This also occurs on my KDE 6 Beta 1 test system, which was installed from this

Bug ID: 464851
Summary: Ejecting vs unmounting ISO image confusing
Classification: Applications

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Right click an ISO in Dolphin and mount it
2. Right click on the now mounted ISO in the sidebar- choose Eject, Unmount, or
click the eject symbol
3. Go back to the folder where you actually mounted the ISO from and right
click, choosing "Unmount".

OBSERVED RESULT
The ISO is "ejected" in Step 2, but the icon still shows in the sidebar, with
no way to remove it.
Step 3 actually unmounts and clears the icon from the sidebar.

EXPECTED RESULT
In Step 2, the icon should be removed from the sidebar- especially if the text
says "Unmount".

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
It's a bit confusing why ejecting/unmounting from the sidebar is different from
right clicking the ISO and unmounting.

Think I figured out what was going on- libpoppler-glib8 was getting blocked by
a small number of packages I had on my system from 20.04 (possibly Wine-related
packages).
Once I tried installing libpoppler-glib8 from a command prompt with "sudo pkcon
install libpoppler-glib8", I was asked if it was okay if some packages were
deleted in order for libpoppler-glib8 to install itself.
Once I said yes, the package installed, and then skanlite had no problems
installing.

SUMMARY
***
It would be nice if KDE could tell you if USB-C devices & cables are properly
matched, and at the right speeds.
***

I read these two tweets from Benson Leung, the Google ChromeOS USB-C expert,
and thought this sounded like something KDE should have.
Tweet 1:
https://twitter.com/Laughing_Man/status/1512839814885765124
"Why doesn't my OS tell me what the cable or device I've plugged in is, and
tell me about any problems?" Right now, there are big gaps in all OSes around
USB-C messaging to the user.

Tweet 2:
https://twitter.com/Laughing_Man/status/1530228725953884161
Coming to Chrome OS M102: Newer Chromebooks (11th Gen Intel or newer) will
notify you if the USB-C cable you're using with a dock or a monitor does not
support DisplayPort!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This library seems like it could be useful in this, unless KDE already has a
library that processes USB-C/USB PD devices:

SUMMARY
Based on comments in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=392523 &
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=444709, I should be able to right click an
application in the menu, choose edit application, go to advanced settings and
set it to run on my secondary GPU. I am not seeing that option.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Click menu
2. Right click on an application in Favorites, choose Edit Application
3. Go to advanced tab

OBSERVED RESULT
No "run on dedicated GPU" option.

EXPECTED RESULT
There would be an option to mark this application as run on dedicated GPU.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Supposedly this was a thing that's available very recently based on the comment
from bug 444709:

KDE Frameworks Version: 5.88
Qt Version: 5.15.3

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The blog post here:
https://multimedia.cx/eggs/iso-9660-compromise-part-2-finding-root/ actually
diagnoses the problem, and figures out why some software fails on loading the
ISO, and others don't.
The actual files are also available as a ZIP file in the download link above.

You can successfully mount the ISO using the right click menu option in KDE
"Mount ISO".

Here's the file listing I got using that option:
ls -la
total 705
dr-x-- 1 steve steve 2048 Nov 21 1994 .
drwxr-x---+ 3 root root4096 Dec 9 18:54 ..

-r 1 steve steve148 Nov 8 1991 batch2.bat
dr-x-- 1 steve steve 2048 Nov 2 1994 cd
-r 1 steve steve 10080 Dec 22 1993 emuset.exe
dr-x-- 1 steve steve 2048 Nov 8 1991 g

dr-x-- 1 steve steve 2048 Nov 17 1994 s
-r 1 steve steve 19128 Nov 2 1994 sound.exe

Mounting as a loop device also works:
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop ~/Downloads/Power-Drive.iso ~/games/iso

[Skanlite] [Bug 441890] Skanlite fails to save scans

2021-09-03 Thread Steve Zakulec
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=441890

Looks like the update to Skanlite 21.08.1 fixed the issue for me.
After the update, I could once again save scans.

To answer your question:
Yes, Preview before Save was turned off.

[Skanlite] [Bug 441890] New: Skanlite fails to save scans

2021-09-01 Thread Steve Zakulec
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=441890

Bug ID: 441890
Summary: Skanlite fails to save scans
   Product: Skanlite
   Version: 21.08.0
  Platform: Neon Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kare.s...@iki.fi
  Reporter: spzaku...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 141236
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=141236=edit
screenshot of the error message

SUMMARY
Skanlite will scan fine, but when you go to save the scan, you always get
"Failed to save image".

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Skanlite
2. Do a preview scan & a full scan, or just a scan (I am using 600 dpi)- I've
tried saving to JPG, PNG, and TIFF formats

OBSERVED RESULT
Skanlite pops up an error saying "Failed to save image"

Then which you click OK, the progress bar never stops moving, and the program
is not usable until you click Close

EXPECTED RESULT
Skanlite successfully saves the scan.

Qt Version: 5.15.3

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I'm using a Canon CanoScan LiDE 300, which works fine in Document Scanner, and
fine in Skanlite up until the point at which the scan needs to be saved.

When I run skanlite from a Konsole, this text shows up in the Konsole when I
try to save the scan:

I just tried disabling the libzip plugin, and it worked just fine then- is this
a bug with libzip then?

Thanks for your help here.

The zipfile Ark fails on extracting

SUMMARY
Ark can't unzip the attached zip file (ntraid01.zip)- it can be unzipped using
7zip 16.02.
The message shown is:
There was an error while extracting ‘/home/steve/games/DOS-games/ntraid01.zip’:
Failed to open 'GRAPHICS.NRD': Compression method not supported

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open folder in Dolphin containing zip file
2. Right-click on zip file (ntraid01.zip) and choose Extract here, auto-detect
subfolder.

OBSERVED RESULT
Ark fails with "There was an error while extracting
‘/home/steve/games/DOS-games/ntraid01.zip’:
Failed to open 'GRAPHICS.NRD': Compression method not supported"

If you try extracting this with 7zip 16.02, it works fine.

EXPECTED RESULT
Ark extracts the zip file the same as 7zip does.
