Yeah, bookmarks and places are different features: bookmarks are hierarchical,
while Places are flat.

I find this to be a bit odd too, and I suspect it's why the bookmarks button is
hidden in the file dialogs by default, and why the Bookmarks feature added to
Dolphin a year or so ago is quite hidden in a sub-menu of the Go menu (which
isn't visible by default).

So we have a sort of "Simple by default (places)" and "Powerful when needed
(bookmarks)" split.

Without simply ripping Bookmarks out, I'm not sure there's anything actionable
here. And if we do that, we'll surely upset the small subset of people who do
use the feature. So I think we probably have to stay with the status quo. :)

Bookmarks visible in file picker

Coming back to this bug a few years later after I have a better understanding
of KDE :)

Please forget the comments about the file picker used by Pinta. I guess that's
a different library (Mon? GTK?)

I've used Kate as an example in the latest screenshot. My confusion was as to
why there is a list of "Bookmarks" as well as a list of "Places". Is there a
use case were a bookmark would be useful or needed, but it couldn't be put
under Places? Otherwise it seems unusual to have web bookmarks as destinations
for saving or selecting files.

Which applications? The screen shot looks like it is a dialog from a non-KDE
web browser.

The bookmark icon appeared with a fresh install of KDE 5.5.5.

By coming from Mint, I meant migrating from Cinnamon to KDE. I installed
Kubuntu, which comes with KDE 5.5.5. I also wanted to upgrade, but couldn't
figure out how to do so beyond 5.6.5 -

Pinta is not KDE software, so it does not use the KDE file dialogs.

Regarding the bookmark icon in the KDE file dialog, I do not see it here. Can
you please check:
- if it appears with all KDE applications, if not, which not?
- if it does appear in all KDE applications, if it also appears with a freshly
created user account?
- if yes, can you try a different distribution?

Also, can you please ask Mint developers, why they let you beta test the old
Plasma 5.5 software, when we already released Plasma 5.6 and 5.7 as stable
releases.

Pinta has a different file dialog... why?

I suspect I'll be told to file this issue with Pinta. However, as the most
popular image (not pixel) editing software, a neat KDE distribution should
ensure that Pinta works well.
