[digikam] [Bug 473534] Metadata tags not written to HEIF files

2023-08-20 Thread Maik Qualmann
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473534

--- Comment #3 from Maik Qualmann  ---
It's about Bug 469408, although it's about video files. Windows Explorer also
writes metadata in video files in a QuickTime container.
What difference do you see when writing tags with ExifTool? Note that you can
specify which tags should be written or read in the advanced digiKam metadata
settings.

[dolphin] [Bug 472458] Confirmation for "Closing Windows with multiple Tabs" doesn't work

2023-08-20 Thread zb4ng
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=472458

--- Comment #7 from zb4ng  ---
(In reply to Amol Godbole from comment #6)
> The confirmation message will not be displayed if the dolphin setting for
> 'remember opened tabs' has been selected.
> This is available in Settings->Configure Dolphin->Startup->Show on
> startup->Folders, tabs, and window state from last time.
>
> Could you please confirm if you have not configured dolphin to remember tabs?

Yes, it is as you said:
If "Folders, tabs, and window state from last time. " is selected, then the
confirmation message is not displayed.
If the radio button is in the other state (next to the field with the folder),
the confirmation box "You have multiple tabs open in this window, are you sure
you want to quit?" appears.

I tried the second option (= go to some default folder on startup) and when I
rebooted, all the folders from last time were there. So this seems to work for
me now, but I find it a bit confusing:
- Why are those two settings linked ?
- Does the second option do anything ?
- If I press "Quit Dolphin" in the confirmation box, only the tabs of the
current window will be closed (which is what I want!). However, the button text
"Quit Dolphin") suggests that all Dolphin windows will be closed, hence I was
at first hesitant to try it.

If this behavior is deliberate, this issue can be closed from my pov.
Thanks!

I was trying to use my scanner. I set the DPI from 75 to 300, set paper size to
A4 and presses the "Scan" button. Skanlite then crashed.

It is possible that Skanlite picked up the wrong scanner. I have an Epson
L3160, and it shows both as such and as in Epson PID in xsane. However, since I
cannot seem to be able to change scanners in Skanlite, I cannot test if it
works with the right scanner.

[dolphin] [Bug 473554] New: gs process with high load during thumbnail creation for specific (faulty?) pdf

2023-08-20 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473554

Bug ID: 473554
   Summary: gs process with high load during thumbnail creation
for specific (faulty?) pdf
Classification: Applications
   Product: dolphin
   Version: 23.04.3
  Platform: Archlinux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: dolphin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: johanna_mueller...@yahoo.de
CC: kfm-de...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When I open a folder in dolphin with a thumbnail view enabled that contains
this pdf [1], a "gs" process runs that fully consumes on of the cpu cores. It
runs for a while (seconds), and sometimes it seems that when it stops a new one
is started again, so this goes on for a while.
When I encountered this for the first time, I didn't have this folder open at
all, and I had three of them running in parallel, heating up my cpu enough for
me to notice this issue. I don't know if I had previously opened the folder
since the last reboot though (I often go days, sometimes weeks without reboot).
So maybe this can even happen during background-preparation of thumbnails or
something?
The pdf itself opens without problems in Okular and mupdf.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. download pdf:
https://www.weishaupt.de/uploads/tx_weishaupt_documents/documents/83247601_10_16.pdf
2. open folder containing the pdf with dolphin with thumbnails enabled

OBSERVED RESULT
gs process with high cpu load spawned/possibly respawned
full command according to "ps aux", edited for privacy:
gs -sDEVICE=png16m -sOutputFile=- -dSAFER -dPARANOIDSAFER -dNOPAUSE
-dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=1 -q - /home/me/path/83247601_10_16.pdf -c showpage -c
quit

EXPECTED RESULT
no high cpu usage or only for a short time

[Powerdevil] [Bug 473555] New: Monitor brightness unresponsive when USB drive connected

2023-08-20 Thread Frederik Schwarzer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473555

Bug ID: 473555

Classification: Plasma
   Product: Powerdevil

  Platform: Debian unstable

Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general

  Reporter: schwar...@kde.org
CC: m...@ratijas.tk, natalie_clar...@yahoo.de
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When I connect a USB drive to my laptop, the screen brightness setting via the
Fn keys becomes unresponsive until the USB drive is detected and ready to use
(meaning: the notification with the mount options is shown).
For some reason this is taking around 10 seconds for some of my USB drives.
Then I change the screen brightness settings a lot during that time, all those
changes are then "replayed" when the system is responsive again.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. connect USB drive (and hope it takes some time to be ready)
2. in the meantime, change the screen brightness using the Fn keys
3. wonder

OBSERVED RESULT
The screen brightness does not change (or changes later)

EXPECTED RESULT
Screen brightness should be responsive regardless of any other Plasma thing
waiting for something.

Actually, it seems Inkscape places the first line way too high it looks like
they are not using the proper ascent/descent. This is more obvious with
line-height 0.

I have recreated this in HTML using floating elements for reference. I also
have a rough fix for Krita, so I'll open a draft MR with it.

Thanks, Maik. I haven't found any related bug.
This works although I see some differences in the tags written by ExifTool
(which is no surprise). More and more mobile phones support HEIF, or even
suggest it as the standard option. Therefore, full HEIF support would be great.

[systemsettings] [Bug 429665] Touchpad Tap-to-click should be enabled by default in System Settings

2023-08-20 Thread Kevin Kofler
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=429665

--- Comment #9 from Kevin Kofler  ---
If there is really no other way to click on a given touchpad, tap to click is
enabled by default in libinput. At least that is how it is supposed to be
according to the libinput developers, they do not necessarily have exhaustive
data on all the touchpad models out there, so yours might have to be added to
the list.

For everyone else, defaulting to tap to click is a bad idea because it is
redundant with the physical clicks and because it is prone to misclicks. (Tap
to click used to be enabled by default. I constantly ended up accidentally
clicking while just trying to move the cursor, or sometimes even while just
accidentally touching the touchpad while typing. So disabling that misfeature
was one of the first things I changed. So I was glad when it got finally
disabled by default.)

[systemsettings] [Bug 429665] Touchpad Tap-to-click should be enabled by default in System Settings

2023-08-20 Thread Tyson Tan
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=429665

--- Comment #10 from Tyson Tan  ---
(In reply to Kevin Kofler from comment #9)

I've already said it in Comment 2, I suppose I should expand the details:

> If there is really no other way to click on a given touchpad

Even though most button-less trackpads can press-to-click,
but in reality, such interaction is not a practical way to use those devices.
They are clearly not engineered to be used as such.

The natural interaction on those device is self-explained:

1) Who knows to press down for a button, when there is NO BUTTON to be seen?
-- newer generations GREW UP WITH TOUCHSCREENS,
-- they will never have guessed the trackpad can be pressed down for a button.

2) You often need to press really hard to initiate a click.
-- because unlike a physical button, you don't know where the switch is under
the surface.
-- as such, precise clicks and dragging are nearly impossible,
-- and mistakes are rampant because there is no clear divide between the
trackpad and the "buttons".

If there is anything the trackpad designers are trying to imply,
they are encouraging people to use tap-to-click, while discouraging people from
using press-to-click.
Press-to-click on a trackpad is more like a fail-safe, fallback, last-resort
kind of feature.

According to my observation,
NOBODY in ANY organization I worked in EVER used press-to-click on their
button-less trackpads.

EVERY people I EVER recommended KDE Plasma to, the FIRST difficulty they ran
into on a laptop
has ALWAYS been the "tap-to-click" feature being disabled by default.

> For everyone else, defaulting to tap to click is a bad idea because it is
> redundant with the physical clicks and because it is prone to misclicks.

Maybe it only with old trackpads. Not so much for modern devices.
I never had any misclicks on my tiny 10-inch mini-laptop with tap-to-click.

> disabling that misfeature was one of the first things I changed.

Now enabling that feature becomes one of the first things I changed,
and the same for many more other people...

Disabling tap-and-click by default is a misfeature that turns first time users
away.
Really bad first impression when you can't even click anything unless educated
before-hand.
EVERY OTHER OSes are doing the opposite, KDE Plasma's default behavior stands
out like a sore-thumb.

The situation has changed, and the world has moved on. We need to adapt.
I really don't think dwelling on the past experience is going to help us in the
long run.

Since we changed the singe-click to double-click, I guess we are opinionated
enough now?
I switched three normal Windows users to Linux/KDE recently and all three of
them wondered why the touch pad would not click on tap and were a bit clueless
about how to go on without it.

The analysis is nice, but it misses the problem and is not the cause. We cannot
flatten JOIN queries if they are needed for processing. If it takes minutes to
tag 500 images without writing the metadata, then the problem lies elsewhere.
We need a log from the terminal of such a slow database operation when starting
digiKam on macOS in a terminal. It is important to set the Qt Debug variable
beforehand. The process for macOS is described here:

Classification: Applications
   Product: dolphin
   Version: 23.04.3
  Platform: Archlinux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: bars: location

Dolphin window with location bar moved relative to folder panel

SUMMARY
Location Bar can be moved by grabbing the slider regardless of the folder
panel.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Display folder in split view
2. Position mouse pointer left of the location bar and grab the slider.
3. Move the slider left or right (see the attachment)

OBSERVED RESULT
The location bar moves regardless of the folders panel and stays there until
the location is changed.

EXPECTED RESULT

Bug ID: 473578
   Summary: Allow OAuth instead of a dedicated user account to
interract with KDE services.
Classification: I don't know
   Product: kde
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: ivb...@proton.me
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
To be able to use some KDE services like this one, or anything at
invent.kde.org, you need a specific account on that service. It would be very
nice to be able to just log in with a github, or gitlab account, or some other
similar service.

Bug ID: 473583
   Summary: [Wayland] Chromium's page scrolling is laggy
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.27.7
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: compositing
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: zvova7...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
While scrolling pages in Chromium, there is occasional lag. However, when the
Plasma FPS widget is enabled, scrolling becomes smoother. I suspect this might
be related to GPU frequency. I've seen a similar bug report where this behavior
was observed, but it affected the smoothness of the entire Plasma environment.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start plasma wayland session
2. Open chromium
3. Scroll pages

OBSERVED RESULT
Smooth scrolling

EXPECTED RESULT
A little lagging occurs

[frameworks-kconfig] [Bug 422529] Put config files inside a kde subdirectory in ~/.config, ~/.local/share, and ~/.cache

--- Comment #29 from sourcemaker  ---
The configuration files are just hell.
Today I reinstalled Akonadi, and it's super tedious to gather everything
together.
Apart from that, there are always leftovers from programs that are no longer
used.

How about a separation according groups and products?

# Base directory for all KDE stuff
~/.config/kde/

# Program directory
~/.config/kde/$group/$product/

Examples:

# KDE accessibility applications
~/.config/kde/accessibility/

# KDE education applications
~/.config/kde/education/

# KDE games
~/.config/kde/games/

# KDE graphics applications
~/.config/kde/graphics/

# KDE multimedia applications
~/.config/kde/multimedia/

# KDE network applications
~/.config/kde/network/

# KDE office applications
~/.config/kde/office/

# KDE PIM applications
~/.config/kde/pim/

# KDE SDK applications
~/.config/kde/sdk/

# KDE system applications
~/.config/kde/system/

# KDE utilities applications
~/.config/kde/utilities/

# KDE Plasma
~/.config/kde/plasma/

For Akonadi und PIM it would be:

~/.config/kde/pim/akonadi/
~/.config/kde/pim/akregator/
~/.config/kde/pim/itinerary/
~/.config/kde/pim/kaddressbook/
~/.config/kde/pim/kalarm/
~/.config/kde/pim/kalendar/
~/.config/kde/pim/kleopatra/
~/.config/kde/pim/kmail/
~/.config/kde/pim/knotes/
~/.config/kde/pim/kontact/
~/.config/kde/pim/korganizer/
~/.config/kde/pim/zanshin/

Old programs that are no longer in use should be removed automatically.

[kphotoalbum] [Bug 473587] New: KPhotoAlbum crashes when switching to Image after resizing Viewer window while viewing Video

2023-08-20 Thread Victor Lobo
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473587

Bug ID: 473587
   Summary: KPhotoAlbum crashes when switching to Image after
resizing Viewer window while viewing Video
Classification: Applications
   Product: kphotoalbum
   Version: GIT master
  Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Viewer
  Assignee: kpab...@willden.org
  Reporter: victor.ip.l...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
KPhotoAlbum crashes if all these conditions are met:
1. Thumbnail Viewer has at least two videos at the start (top) followed by a
mix of images and/or videos, and
2. User opens in Viewer any Video, and
3. User resizes the Viewer window while viewing Video, and
4. User then moves from Video to an Image

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open KPhotoAlbum
2. Ensure that the Thumbnail View has at least two videos at the start (top)
followed by a mix of images and/or videos
3. Open any Video in the Thumbnail View in Viewer
4. While viewing Video, resize the Viewer window (for example by using mouse to
drag window edges or click maximize window button)
5. Scroll to an Image in the Viewer (using mouse wheel, Pg-up/down or trackpad)
6. KPhotoAlbum crashes

OBSERVED RESULT
Crash

EXPECTED RESULT
No crash

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20230816; Kernel Version: 6.4.9-1-default (64-bit)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.7
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.108.0
Qt Version: 5.15.10
KPhotoAlbum Version 5.11.0 (as installed from Opensuse Tumbleweed repository)
Also occurs in latest git version v5.11.0-63-g26012c0b

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
1. This bug is likely a duplicate of Bug 472610. I cannot tell for sure if
thats the same issue since my issue seems to require more steps.
2. Crash is reproducible every time the steps are followed.
3. Crash occurs even in the demo database. However, by default the demo
database has only a single video, movie.avi. To easily setup the demo database
for this bug do the following:
3a. Open demo database
3b. Go to /tmp/kphotoalbum-demo-/
3c. Make a copy of movie.avi in the same folder; so now there will be two
videos
3d. Maintenance --> Rescan for image and videos in demo database
3e. In Thumbnail Viewer, select the two videos and drag them to the very start
of the Thumbnail view
3f. Then follow Step to Reproduce above from #3

-- Information about the crash:
I was using Firefox, had hexchat, steam, discord running in the background.
Went to open Dolphin from the taskbar, instead of opening Dolphin Plasma
crashed. When I tried to do the same thing again right after it worked, so it
was just a random crash.

I'm using Debian Sid so it's not really a surprise but figured I'd file the
report anyway in case it helped.

The crash does not seem to be reproducible.

I apologize for not being able to respond for a long time.
Because I don't understand English, I rely on machine translation. Does it mean
you want me to provide the problematic PSD data?
I can't load all PSD data, regardless of their file size.
I'm not sure if I need to provide PSD data from my side, but for now, I will
give you a few samples that I created.

Hello! You've reached the KDE bug tracker, which is for tracking and
investigating specific bugs. Unfortunately there is not enough information in
here to proceed or pinpoint where a bug (if any) in KDE code might be. Can you
please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Issue_Reporting and add more
information here, including why you think it might be a bug in any KDE
software? If you read through that wiki page and don't feel like it's helped at
all, I'd recommend posting a question at https://discuss.kde.org/c/help/6, and
hopefully the people there can help you.
Thanks!

with this in etc/nixos/configuration, it does indeed restore things.
hardware.nvidia = {

it does not restore without powerManagement.enable = true; or with open = true;

I'm using Plasma with hiDPI displays, so I have fractional scaling turned on.

When fractional scaling is on, plasma-workspace sets environment variable
QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS. For some reason this variable causes strange rendering
issues with Telegram, MegaSync and some other QT applications.

The only way to remove this variable is to patch startplasma-x11.cpp:

```
I haven't noticed any rendering issues with this variable unset, only
[kaddressbook] [Bug 473580] New: Don't show toolbar buttons if they are not interractable
2023-08-20 Thread bugzilla_noreply
   Summary: Don't show toolbar buttons if they are not
interractable
Classification: Applications
   Product: kaddressbook
   Version: 5.23.3
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdepim-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: ivb...@proton.me
CC: to...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
Currently, when you start the app for the first time, toolbar items like
"Tools", and "Action" have no purpose, but they are still interactable. What
then happens is that if you click on them, nothing will happen. They should
instead be greyed out.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Put KAddressBook in a state so toolbar items have no purpose
2. Click on a toolbar item with no purpose
3. observe that it will still be interractable as if it did have a purpose
OBSERVED RESULT
Toolbar items are interractable
EXPECTED RESULT
They should be greyed out if not useable in that state.
SUMMARY
Disregarding the value I have set in `System Settings → Energy Saving → Dim
screen` (which is currently set to 8 minutes) the screen always gets dimmed
much earlier. I just measured and it is 4 minutes.
Workaround: `systemctl --user start plasma-powerdevil`, unfortunately that way
you lose control over your brightness settings. So ATM is repeatedly switch
stop and start the service as I work which is very annoying.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Go to `System Settings → Energy Saving`
2. On every available tab set `Dim screen` timeout to 8 minutes.
3. Wait for 4 minutes
OBSERVED RESULT
Screen gets dimmed
EXPECTED RESULT
Screen has light as usual
--- Comment #3 from ratijas  ---
So is it safe to say, Plasma freezes as whole, and it has something to do with
Monitor brightness specifically?
To clarify, I meant I had originally found and reported the bug only testing
for me.
Crashing when there's no space left is also a bug, so I guess we should fix
that.
I suppose it would be very difficult to attach a backtrace when your main
storage is out of space and the save location can't be changed right now (will
be an option later). Could you go to System Settings -> Applications ->
Locations and change your Videos folder to something like a flash drive with
low storage space? After that, try to reproduce the bug and attach a backtrace
to this bug report. Make sure to read
https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports
and have debug symbols installed.
