This means that ODF files would be at severe disadvantage because they'd be
converted from ODT to DOCX when loading and back to ODT when saving. This
conversion is always lossy.

(In my opinion a good editor should not convert files but edit them without
converting them but that's not what is practice in any office suite.)

KDE is (passive) member of the ODF technical committee at OASIS and Calligra
uses ODF as it's standard file format. KDE was one of the initiators of the ODF
file format.

'The Document Foundation' which develops LibreOffice is on the KDE advisory
board.

So using DOCX as a default is a bad look for KDE.

Disclaimer: I've worked for years on ODF and Calligra and so I'm biased.

Regards to the experience of editing on share.kde.org (S) versus
collaborate.kde.org (C). For me initial loading of S is much faster, but
scrolling is faster in C. Searching is much nicer in S which gives live
scrolling to the hits. C has a bit nicer font choices in the UI.
Typing in S has a bit of a delay, but that might be improved on the new
install. Typing in C is not that fluid either.

I personally have not used either in anger and am unlikely to on this
instance, so for *practical* editing and blockers, you can discount my
opinion.

Best regards,
Jos

Hi,
For me, I still like Collabora Online or like more, and it seems Nextcloud
and Collabora Online (why not use CODE?) are not both latest.
Also OnlyOffice is very slow for me...

Sorry but your experience doesn't match with that of others I've spoken
with - while OnlyOffice does take a bit longer to initially load the typing
responsiveness is substantially better ( and the delta only gets bigger
when you start adding multiple people editing and images in there)

As for CODE - It is the same thing as Collabora Online, just limited by the
fact you have to run Docker.

The PIM DAV groupware functionality would need to support using some form
of OAuth based authentication flow ideally.

Alternatively, you could try setting up an application password at

While I appreciate the sentiment, all we are talking about here is the
default extension on the file created by Nextcloud.
The full software stack - which is totally open source - is fully capable
of reading and writing ODF (subject to some fidelity warnings - which is
normal as i've different versions of LibreOffice render documents
differently).

A default extension is quite far from a big step backwards.

Does one of those improvements include a switch to client side rendering?

One of the major weaknesses of LibreOffice Online is that it makes use of
server side rendering, which means over connections that have anything but
low latency you can actually see the tiles being refreshed - and typing
does not yield an immediate response. This has been a cause of substantial
complaints that Sysadmin has received regarding our present setup at
share.kde.org (and some of these have come from people in Europe, so even
~50ms or so is too much for the server side rendering approach to be
workable).

You can also see this on the Demo Nextcloud instance they have on their
website (or at least I can with my 300ms or so of latency to the servers -
something I don't see at all with our OnlyOffice setup) so this isn't a
fault caused by our deployment.

I am not a KDE user but I consider this measure a big step backwards in
terms of the defense of open standards that any project involved in free
software should promote.

You may not be aware, but there is a product developed in Taiwan that is
available in a community version and provides full support for the only
standard office document format: ODF. It's called OxOffice Online, it's a
fork of LibreOffice Online with several improvements. In fact we are using
it at the university where I work.

I'd like to poke at its KOrganizer interoperation. I think that requires
installation of the Nextcloud Tasks app (https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/
tasks), at least to provide access to tasks through the web interface. Could
you add that to your task list?

Thank you for doing this!

I noticed that new documents created from the new file menu button use
Microsoft Office formats (e.g., docx, xlsx). Can you swich the default
formats to OpenDocument formats?

Introduction of new Nextcloud instance

2021-07-21 Thread Ben Cooksley
Good morning community,

As some of you will be aware, the current Nextcloud instance we operate has
a number of performance issues which sometimes result in data loss.

To resolve this as well as improve the overall collaborative editing
experience we're able to offer, i'm pleased to introduce a replacement
Nextcloud instance which you can find at https://collaborate.kde.org/

Main changes to note here are the switch away from KDE Identity to MyKDE
for authentication, as well as the switch to using OnlyOffice for document
editing. We hope that these changes will solve the majority of the user
experience issues we have had with share.kde.org. In particular we expect
the performance issues and data loss problems that accompanied them to be
fully resolved, as they were caused by severe defects in the LDAP
implementation in Nextcloud which they have not corrected more than a year
after we brought them to their attention.

It would be appreciated if you could please all test this installation over
the coming week and let us know of any issues you encounter. Once this test
phase has been completed we plan to migrate the contents of all group
shared folders over from share.kde.org to the new system.

Please note that once we have migrated everything over all existing shared
links will unfortunately be broken. This is a result of how the LDAP
support in Nextcloud works which makes it difficult to switch to a
different method of user login for those accounts. While we investigated
options to migrate this over, extremely poor communication from the vendor
frustrated all attempts to transition this over cleanly and unfortunately
requires a completely clean break to ensure we have no legacy issues
causing problems for us in the future.

Please let us know if you have any questions on the above.
