I totally agree.

You are right. From a promotion point of view, and looking at the site, it
would not be worth the money. I was just focusing on trying to participate
with talks.

Good call.

Somewhere the question got lost about how Agnes was approaching us:
 1. as sponsors / booth purchasers
 2. as a community with something interesting to tell

I read it as (1), and regarding that I think it's safe to say that no, we
don't want a 3500 EUR booth at a conference. Although if someone describes a
business case that makes sense of spending money to present ourselves to this
particular audience, I'll be happy to take that statement back.

That's fine, Paul.

Well, maybe. I was just preparing a talk on governance, manifesto, code of
conduct (also the FreeBSD one, which is very very different in wording from
the KDE bits) for a Dutch thingmabob, I may try to recycle it (and have
emailed as much to Agnes, in the unlikely event that it was reason (2),
above).

Thanks Mirko.

To list all the preferred topics:

* open source project leadership best practices
* community management
* open source project metrics
* open source strategy for the enterprise
* adopting open source collaboration in corporations
* legal matters when dealing with open source
* vendor neutrality
* leading projects without discretionary power

By the way, I am not saying we must go to this event in particular. I am just
saying we should not discard an event offhand just because it is not technical
any more. Fortunately (I would say), KDE is not only comprised of developers.
At some point we may even have more end-users than developers.

Imagine that!*

Yes, maybe. If we have relevant issues to share this will be a good conference
for it. It is about governance and compliance, I am sure we have something to
present. How about talking about the manifesto and our code of conduct,
community principles. Any takers?

I have submitted presentations about compliance tooling and OIN. Hope to see
you at the event :-)

This should not put us off, Adriaan. We are explicitly looking for non-
technical events, even not specifically FLOSS events, where we can go and seek
more users.

We can send speakers, only probably they would not necessarily be
developers... or maybe yes.

It is time to shake this perception that the KDE community can only offer
technical talks, especially if we want to reach a wider audience.

Cheers

Invitation to join FOSS Backstage 2018

2018-02-21 Thread Agnes Ratajczyk
Dear KDE-Team,

I'd like to invite you to join us for the first FOSS Backstage
conference on June 13&14 in Berlin. It will
take place directly after Berlin Buzzwords
and is dedicated to everything related to *Free and Open Source Software
governance and open collaboration*.

FOSS Backstage will provide a space to discuss a broad spectrum of
issues related to community management, vendor neutrality and leading
projects without discretionary power. Conference topics will include
open source project leadership best practices, community management,
open source project metrics, open source strategy for the enterprise,
adopting open source collaboration in corporations, legal matters when
dealing with open source and many more.

With Shane Coughlan
 (OpenChain)
and Danese Cooper
 (Head
of Open Source Software at PayPal) we have already announced two
high-quality keynotes to kick-off the first edition of the conference.
Additionally the Apache Software Foundation will hold their Apache EU
Roadshow  at
FOSS Backstage.

For the conference we are expecting around 400 participants: community
leaders, developers, architects, sysadmins, consultants – basically
everyone interested in building, managing and sustaining communities
within the open source space.

We would be happy to see you get involved, whether it's by getting an
early bird ticket, reserving a booth space or talking to us about
partnerships tailored to your needs and wishes. If your organisation is
interested in supporting us as a sponsor, feel free to contact me for
more details on partnership opportunities. We have special offers for
non-profits. We also offer combined packages with Berlin Buzzwords which
takes place right before the FOSS.

View our full partner brochure here
.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards from Berlin!
Agnes

P.s.: Our Call for Papers is open until February 18th. Feel free to
forward the link to your colleagues or submit yourself. We'd appreciate
that and hope to see you at FOSS: https://foss-backstage.de/call-papers
