Hi,

1. Translatable messages from /shell and /kcms/plasma-settings-shell are not
extracted (no Messages.sh).

2. i18nd() usage in QMLs is at least inconsistent.

Thanks in advance for fixing this.

Added. Scripty will extract the catalog for translation tomorrow.

But I bet the translations will not be loaded because of the lack of KAboutData
and friends. See KLook:

Hope this helps and thanks for your work.

Yes. The maintainers of shared-mime-info will tell you if the type is right
(I think, that it would be better to use ,
similar to PDF, but I might be wrong).

  > After that I can abandon this merge request again here?

It depends on what type will be recommended by shared-mime-info maintainers.
No, there is no sense to submit icons to shared-mime-info. The icons should be
reviewed here by our VDG team but their names should be chosen according to the
type in shared-mime-info package.

AFAIK this is broken on Qt level. Cf. calendar widget in KOrganizer (Ukrainian)

F7273188: cal.png

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=256952

There are new specifiers for the primary and alternative month names in glibc
but Qt does not implement them (must be something like " " instead of
" " in formatting). Rafal Luzynski (the author of the glibc patch) in a
private message (2018-01-25) promised me to send the patch for Qt but this has
not happened yet.

Hi,

I used to fix some things like typos, duplicate inclusion of headers, etc. But
then 3 months ago it ceased to work. I switched to fixing API docs, until at
some point, there is nothing to fix. ;)

So I get back to translations. Thankfully, good people from Krita enable
translation of their manual. :)

EBN is a good tool to keep consistency. It would be sad to loose it.

Just my 2 cents.

Best regards,
Yuri

D17620: Make setHelp() public

2018-12-16 Thread Yuri Chornoivan
yurchor abandoned this revision.
yurchor added a comment.

Abandoned due to the policy violation. Despite of the handful help pages
invocation, it is obvious that this change will never happen.

Just a side note: the protected method is useless and can be removed without
loss of any functionality because all known setHelp()'s are commented now with
hopeless messages like "TODO: port to kf5".

REVISION SUMMARY
Sometimes it is useful to connect configuration dialogs directly with the
corresponding section in the manual (KmPlot, KAnagram). It was easy before KF 5:

m_settingsDialog->setHelp("configuration", QLatin1String("kmplot"));

but now setHelp is protected and this is an untrivial task.

TEST PLAN
The code just moved to public slots, should work as expected.

REVISION SUMMARY
The current KDE help is built up to contain the anchors to its topics in the
following way

  help://.html (for separate pages)

  example:

  https://docs.kde.org/trunk5/en/applications/dolphin/using-dolphin.html

  or

  help:// (for sections)

  example:

https://docs.kde.org/trunk5/en/applications/dolphin/location-bar.html#location-bar-bread-crumb

It is impossible to build such schemes with the current code. It works only
for schemes help://index.html#. This scheme is nowhere to be
found in our current catalog.

TEST PLAN
  1. Compile and install some application with two non-empty arguments in the
KHelpClient::invokeHelp call (e.g. Kalzium from git/master).
  2. Open a page with the "Help" button (Tools -> Perform Calculation in
Kalzium). Push the button.
  3. The corresponding page of the manual should be opened.

Confirmed to work (with Ukrainian translation) on Mageia 6 (kf5 5.42,
Applications 17.12, Dolphin context menu) with minor modifications to compile
on gcc 5 (remove new compilation frags and replacing "" with QString() where
it is appropriate).

Thanks for your work.

Hi,

I might be wrong, but is the hotlinking to Phabricator/Git files
(screenshots in this case) a good thing?

Nobody suggested that, right?

I might misunderstand the whole thing. If it is, just ignore this message.

The typical size of AppData screenshot is ~100 kB. Let's say that there
are ~1000 users that use Discover features to explore KDE applications in
a release day. They can overview ~10 screenshots in average. This will be
1 GB of traffic + load on Phabricator to resolve commits.kde.org links (if
files are stored in git).

Recently, Ben Cooksley removed the page with Calligra Icons from
community.kde.org for similar hotlinking:

https://community.kde.org/Calligra/Icons/3.0

That was the source of my concerns.

On the other hand, if screenshots will be stored in different
places/hostings (each application stores its screenshot in its own place)
it can leverage the load on our infrastructure.

Sorry again, if I misunderstand something.

Best regards,
Yuri

The screenshots on kde.org/applications are stored in SVN and they are
the main reason why I couldn't migrate that website to Git. I would
prefer if you don't add even more there...

www/sites/www/screenshots (svn) has 176 pngs

websites/edu-kde-org/ (git) has 1287 pngs

master kf5 / doc[s] (git) folders have 2079 pngs

master kde4 / doc[s] (git) folders have 1702 pngs

I do not understand why the 176 pngs in www/sites/www/screenshots are a
problem for migration to git

Neither Okular, nor Krusader are part of Plasma. So what is that? Trying

This is highly non-constructive, highly disrespectful towards the

I think there's a simple misunderstanding here.

Sebas meant removing the code from plasma repo in order to not having

this is about removing it from plasma-the-shell, ie. from kicker/kickoff

Yes. That's what I meant.

But generally, I cannot say that I like the way the things are going. The
UserBase project does not have significant updates on applications pages
(although it was claimed that users are willing to write docs online),
there is a trend to sweep docs under the carpet, move them online, cut off
docs from applications, compile and package without docs, release without
docs at all. That's not pretty and fair.

Sorry for being too rough. Please forgive me.

Yuri

Hi all,

[For the sake of sanity, please reply to both list, this topic affects
applications and Plasma.]

One of the topics we are discussing at the current Plasma sprint is
whether we
really want khelpcenter as part of the Plasma releases in the future.
Some

data points:

- khelpcenter is unmaintained, it has seen a rough port to KF5, but has
otherwise seen zero love, this shows
- just dropping it would mean that the user gets sent to a webpage
containing

the latest version of the documentation, so khelpcenter's usecase is
actually just being an offline cache, fallback mechanism are already
in place

- said user documentation is spotty, this is only semi-related, but still
doesn't exactly make a strong case for keeping it
- it uses KHTML

A casual poll among developers here at the sprint reveals that ~70% would
rather see it gone from Plasma, the rest abstains. Nobody from my
(admittedly

small) sample really wants to keep it.

Killing it could mean that we remove it entirely (to unmaintained), or if
anybody is interested in maintaining it making it part of Applications,
or

Extragear.

Let's seriously think about dropping it from Plasma 5.7 and onwards. If
anybody is hell-bent on keeping it, this person should consider
maintaining it
as well. Unmaintained code in Plasma is not cool, and so far nobody
seems to

care enough to step up.

Cheers,

Дата: Tue, 21 Jul 2015 13:13:16 +0300

Dear Sirs: :-)

I saw the
 KF5 Porting Status
 http://developer.kde.org/~cfeck/portingstatus.html
and thanks to the latest improvements... now Krusader has more green (OK)
cells than ever! :-)

However, there's a red cell in the Krusader row, and it says
application .desktop filenames not yet updated to 'org.kde.' schema

I've searched for that 'org.kde.' schema, but the only information that I
found that was related is:
 - That review request:
Update .desktop files to use org.kde schema
 https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/122785/diff/1#index_header
and maybe:
 -
http://plfiorini.blogspot.com.es/2015/07/how-to-make-your-qt-application-icon.html
 -
http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s02.html

Has anyone dealt with something similar before or can solve that
application .desktop filenames not yet updated to 'org.kde.' schema
step?

Thanks!

Perhaps you could point us all to some screenshots? One requirement for
passing review and an eventual replacement of ksnapshot should be a
successful
review by our usability crew, maybe it can also be made prettier with
some
help from the VDG. Since not everybody is able to, or has the time to
compile

kscreengenie's sources, screenshots would be really helpful.

Hi,

Actually, there is a documentation in the sources with a screenshot:

Re: Adopting AppData in KDE?

2013-11-04 Thread Yuri Chornoivan
 Hi,

I've been asked by Richard Hughes from Gnome and Fedora to raise the
profile of using AppData metadata within KDE. I know very little
about this area myself, but thought it was worthwhile raising on the
list for discussion. If you have any questions about AppData then
Richard would be happy to answer them, so please cc him on replies.

Hi,

1. AppData files are tailored for intltool/its-tool processing (tags with
underscores). What do you think about adding untranslatable by design appdata
files like it was done for Audacity [1]?
2. AppData in GNOME packages is filled with translations while
compiling/packaging the application. Can it be somehow aligned with KDE idea of
storing translations in separate repo?
3. Is it technically possible to have appdata.xml in repo translated by scripty
based on KDE desktop- POs (just like KDE .desktop files)?
4. What is planned to do with Debian/Ubuntu DDTP translations [2, 3]? Is there
any plans to adopt it for Canonical Software Centre/Muon with some kind of
backend? Is it yet another almost-standard for RPM/GNOME distributions?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Best regards,
Yuri

The AppData justification, file format and tools are documented at
[1]. AppData and AppStream are slowly being adopted by various
distros for use in their software installers and app stores. The
AppData metadata file supplements the .desktop file by having a long
description of an app, links to some screenshots, and the app home
page, which get dispalyed in the app installer. The description can
also be localized. While distro's could generate and maintain this
data for themselves, to do so would be very time consuming for them,
may not present the app in the best way possible, and would quickly
get outdated. It makes a lot of sense for apps to create and maintain
this metadata for themselves, presenting themselves in the best way
possible, which all the distros can then reuse in their installer
 applications.

As far as I'm aware, AppData and/or AppStream is either used or
scheduled to be used by default in Gnome Software Centre, Apper,
Fedora, and OpenSuse, and optionally in several other distros, so is
not a distro specific intiative. I think there's even OBS integration
happening. If anyone knows more or thinks differently please let us
 know.

Some recent developments make this a fairly high priority for apps
that wish to target a cross-desktop audience. The new Gnome Software
Centre in Gnome 3.12 which uses AppData will become the default
installer in Fedora 20 for Gnome (Fedora KDE will use Apper).
Currently apps that don't provide AppData are ranked lower in search
results in Gnome Software, but from Gnome 3.14 such apps will not be
listed at all [2]. This means that without an AppData file KDE apps
will eventually not be visible to Gnome users in their default app
installer. Currently Gnome has 50% of apps covered and is
coordinating an effort for full coverage [3], but KDE has only 1%.

Obviously individual apps are free to add these files [4], but from a
KDE-wide perspective we need to discuss if we want to officially adopt
this as a requirement, and if we want to provide a more coordinated
and standardized solution. What do people think?

If we do adopt it, the two obvious issues to me are localization and
screenshots. Ideally scripty would be hooked up to generate the
translation files, but as they are an XML format it may need a bit of
work. Scripty would also need the AppData file to be in a standard
location in each repo. The screenshots need to be hosted by the app
(at least initially, Fedora copy the screenshots to their own server
later to save load), so we may want to have somewhere common on the
KDE infrastructure for that. I'd also suggest defining a file naming
standard including the app name and version number in the screenshot
 name.

Taking a slight step-back, I wonder if there is a need for a more
generic KDE metadata file in each KDE repo that describes even more
useful info, like module, maintainer, reviewboard, bugzilla, last
stable release number, frameworks tier, forums, irc channel, userbase,
mailing list, etc, that AppData and projects.xml and inqlude and any
other required metadata files could all be automatically generated
 from?

One obvious question is how this might relate to Bodega if KDE chooses
to switch to that? What does Gnome shipping their own official App
Store mean for cross-distro/cross-desktop app store efforts and do we
need to start working on our own now, or will Bodega fill that need
 for us?

 Cheers!

 John.

Hi,

Just a point of view. It is somewhat fit kdeedu ideally. At least in the
same order of magnitude as Rocs or Cantor.

There are many other professional tools for curves fitting (Scilab, Octave
for various data fitting algorithms, RKWard and PSPP for regressions).
Kartesio is very good to acknowledge students with the basics of some
modern data fitting algorithms.

If you think is does not, can the module for kde-science be created for
such applications (Kartesio, Rocs, KST, Cantor, Cirkuit, KStars (its
latest improvements are largely for professional and astronomy hobbyists,
not for students ;) ) maybe RKWard if its developers ever decide to join)?

Just my 2 cents.

Hi everyone,

so let's sum up and get back to arguments.

1. Versioning for our KDE SC Releases It was mentioned that a
wiki automatically provides versioning. However, what is
completely not covered, yet, is the fact that we have different
KDE SC releases. There is not 'branching' support for the wikis,
so you have to create different wiki pages, copying the entire
content for each release.

Contrary, this is completely covered by maintaining the
documentation in the respective modules. This is also the reason
why we have documentation freezes (even one of the last freezes
 [2]).

2. Documentation Team We have a documentation team, even for each
of our supported languages. They coordinate on kde-i18n-doc [1],
and Burkhard offered support several times, saying that if you do
not want to write docbook, the documentation team will do the
markup, they even write the documentation for you to some
extent.

3. Consistency The documentation team makes sure the
documentation sticks to the documentation guidelines for
consistency (example: folder vs. directory). This was mentioned
in the past several times on the mailing lists. Again, a
statement of the documentation team is very important here.

4. Getting Help Please ask the documentation team for their
opinion, before raising critics the way it currently works. Maybe
it works for a lot of other projects perfectly fine. In the
thread it was mentioned, that some people do not even know where
the documentation resides (maybe this is due to the partial
transition to git). A simple solution is to ask the documentation
team (or Burkhard) where to find the documentation. I'm pretty
sure the documentation team has really valuable information.
Please do not ignore them.

5. A Simple Solution: Possibility of a Combination If docbook
really does not work for your project, it's fine to have an
additional entry in the Help menu that links to the Community
Documentation on UserBase. There is room for both, docbook and
the wiki.

6. Respect [4]: Akademy Award In 2010, Burkhard Lück got the
Akademy Award for his fantastic work on improving the state of
the KDE documentation [3], supported by the entire KDE community.
Now, two years later, this thread on kcd acts as if the
documentation completely sucks. Guys, it does not. Really. Please
think about this for a minute... (see 5.)

That's all.

7. The one that does the work decides I also want to note that
developers that do not write documentation in docbook and that do
not translate manuals are suggesting to switch to wiki (even if
they agree they won't write documentation anyway) while people
doing documentation and translation of manuals (Yuri, Burkhard,
Chusslove) say the current workflow is good. Seems like the The
one that does the work decides is being ingored.

This is not in any way dissing the work of those that put in much
effort but -

If the current system is so good, can someone please explain to me why
distros ship with docbook help pages that were written years ago and
not updated since?

Anne

The current system has many shortcomings that were pointed out by many
people in this thread.

But these shortcomings are not the reason to fight current offline system.

The better availability, fast editing capabilities, good translation
support of current UserBase have not produce many high quality handbooks
yet. Some sort of recipes, good tutorials, but there are only a few
handbooks... All converted docbooks have links to corresponding UserBase
pages, so there is nothing to prevent users from fixing them.

Hence, we have to admit that the main problem is the lack of KDE
documenters themselves, not the format or the place where the docs are
stored.

Now, we can live with both systems. If developers want their documentation
to be based on UserBase pages, it's OK. If they want to have tutorials
(videos, screencastings) on UserBase, it's OK too. Do not want to have
UserBase handbook? Even this is OK. ;)

What is the reason to push documentation where it slowly dies without any
attention (like rekonq docs, for example)? Let developers to decide
themselves what is better: fixed handbook in their repo, contacts with
Documentation team and link to index.html in .desktop file or link to
http://userbase.kde.org/Special:MyLanguage/APP_NAME/Handbook (to have
localization support, not just like it was done in Krita) and self-written
or user-written documentation.

If some user havs a concern about current state of offline documentation,
there is a link to complain at the bottom of each of its pages. If some
users file a bug about lack of offline copy or offline translation we can
provide them

Well, actually we have. I replaced the offline help documentation in
Krita
with a link to the manual on userbase. I have done this for two
reasons:

 * I couldn't maintain the offline manual anyway after the change to
2.0
 * this way the user gets sent right to the place where they can
contribute

to the manual (and I've got users contributing to it now)

I'm not concerned that users cannot access the help when they are
 off-line.
That's a vanishingly rare situation these days

I disagree, as a matter of fact, I don't have internet connection in the

It's all very hypothetical isn't it? :-)

More seriously, I think we shouldn't loose perspective here. Yes, you're
right, it *can* happen, but Boudewijn is also right, it's becoming rare
situation.

My opinion is that I would love to go for it, and if over time that
turns out
to be a problem, we could ship a dump of the relevant wiki content along
the
application. It'd be used as fallback if the wiki cannot be reached
online.

This way we'd still benefit from the better contribution scalability of
userbase compared to our current situation. That'd make for a more
complex
solution on the client side though, that's why I wouldn't jump the gun
on it

immediately.

Hi,

Just a minor remarks on using UserBase for documentation.

1. It does not matter where you *do not* write your documentation.

New Krita manual was started 5-01-2010 [1]. For now, it is not ready even
at 1/10 level. The activity is extremely low. The content is badly
formatted and hardly useful.

The projection can be made (by exploring similar wiki documentation
projects, like Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva, and Debian/Ubuntu) that when it
will be ready it becomes obsolete for the current version.

Example of the manual that once was written and now partially outdated is
Amarok Manual [2].

2. Simple conversion docbook to wiki does not make manual useful.

Example: Kexi handbook [3] was roughly converted to wiki with broken
formatting, lost of index, and no substantial changes. Thanks to Burkhard
it was polished (as a docbook) and converted back thanks to Claus
Christensen.

3. Manuals can live without wiki conversion.

Examples: Calligra Stage [4] and Calligra Sheets [5] manuals were never
converted to wiki. For whatever reason, they are now in much more helpful
state than Words and Krita docs (not saying that they have offline
versions).

4. Proper formatting allows very easy conversion from wiki XML to docbook.

Once well-formatted, wiki pages can be converted into offline form
(docbook, PDF, or EPUB) in almost no time[6].

Examples:
Amarok, Kexi, Kdenlive, KrossWordPuzzle, part of KMail offline manuals are
converted (and slightly fixed) UserBase manuals.

Just for curiosity, you can compare the level of the translation covering
for these docs in kde-i18n Subversion [7] and on UserBase.

Conclusion

I know that it is hard for developers to keep backward compatibility. But
please do not cease to maintain DocBook compatibility in KDE 5. If you do,
you will likely lost most of your docs and most of your documentation
translators.

I am far from making decision for developers, but it is always good to
have some plan with real results. Just moving docs in hope that after that
someone definitely write them is counterproductive.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi,

If someone is interested, please take a look into it and tell us what

Since no big complaints were raised and the 2 week period passed
already, I'll ask the sysadmin team to move Pairs to KDE Edu. :)

Thanks to all those who cared. ^^

Hi,

Just for the record, I think the issues found by Albert Astals Cid [1]
were not fixed. Pairs is still untranslatable for KDE translation teams.

Thanks for fixing this.

Synaptiks translation

2011-11-07 Thread Yuri Chornoivan

Hi!

For some time the development [1] and translation of KDE touchpad KCM
(Synaptiks) is moved to github [2, 3].

But there is leftover of the code in KDE SVN [4]. This branch is still
being translated by KDE translation teams [5, 6].

1) Are the any plans to move Synaptiks code to KDE git where KDE
translation teams can do their job properly?
2) Is it possible to re-use KDE translations for Synaptiks if the code
will be on github?
3) Can the code in SVN be safely removed to avoid confusion of unused
translations?
4) If the code will be stored on github is it possible to connect KDE
translations with github as it gives many benefits (.desktop file and
manual translation)?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Best regards,
Yuri
