[kmail2] [Bug 277007] KMail2 full search of emails does not work

Search and quick filtering doesn't work in 4.14.1

I try to filter after i...@twitter.com but get a lot of messages where this
string is not included.

Restricting the search to From works. Restricting it to the body should
gives a lot none twitter e-mails but no twitter e-mail.

Filtering is still a disaster!

How did you code this? Normally If a=b then should work in any programming
language. Or do you roll the dice?

Maybe this bug report is the best guess for this error.

Km,ail2 4.14 waits endlessly to retrieve the content of a folder. I remember
that this was a bug before. I could not find the bug report. It seems that the
bug is back again after the update from today / yesterday it is back again.

Found the reason for this. The theme is lost during the update.
When setting the theme again the message is gone.

As in other cases another work around may be to delete some the configuration
files after the update.

I would appreciate less frequent changes and better testing. kmail2 is since

kmail2 does not move messages via drag and drop nor via move to folder into
a other folder.

As far as I know there is no work around anymore. Well done.

BTW: These messages should have been moved by a filter. But the nasty filter
bug is still there. Some message are moved some are not.

Sorry, I have another comment.

After restarting kmail2 / kontact, the messages are gone. Seems to be a problem
with the display of moved / deleted messages in the message view.

At first glance it seems that filtering works better with 4.10.1 but I found
that mails which should not be move to the spam folder are moved to the spam
folder.

I selected the mails and tried to move the mails manually back in the inbox but
it does not work.

After droping them on the inbox the mails are deselected and reaper in the
original folder in less than a second.

(In reply to comment #74)
I think I have the same, a similar problem. I have set up several filters to
move messages to separate folders. Sometimes an incoming mail is filtered,
sometimes not. Applying the filter manually usually helps. This could be
 annoying.

Furthermore I don't understand why filtered/moved messages show first up in
the inbox folder after all. This was working much better with the old kmail.

I confirm that all messages show up first in the inbox. It seem that they are
sorted first to the inbox and the filters are applied later. I would expect
that an incoming message is parsed by the filters first. I get some hundred
messages a day. Parsing first would save a lot processing power.

The filter protocol does not report a unique identifier to the message. When
filtering a large amount of messages the filter protocol is useless because the
log entries could not be related to a specific message.

I propose that the filter protocol should report first the message id of the
parsed message as a reference to the message.

--- Comment #72 from Thomas Arend tho...@arend-rhb.de ---
(In reply to comment #71)
Automatic filtering doesn't work on local mbox or maildir accounts.

I set up a filter to move incoming messages to a different folder. When I
use mailx to send myself a test message, the message appears in the incoming
folder and isn't moved, and nothing shows in the filter log. The filter
 works fine when applied manually.

 Reproducible always. Kmail 4.9.4.

For me this partly right. I received some hundred mail a day (outputs of cron
jobs) and spam. Some mails are filtered some are not. At the moment ~10% of the
mails are not filtered.

I have attached reports from the filter protocol and the debug report from
anonadiconsole (I have removed / modified some mail addresses)

Unfortunately there is no hint in the debugger about the result oft the pipe.
Maybe that the filter protocol is wrong and the mail is not piped through the
program or the debugger does not report the piping or ... or ...

The only thing I can confirm is: The mail is the same before and after piping.
But it works when I save the mail and do the piping on command line.

I tested it on 4.9.3. The error is reproducible and I wonder why it ist still
unconfirmed.

The message is piped through the program but remains unchanged. Saveing the
message to as a file and piping the message through the program shows that it
is not a error of the program.

unresponsiveness is still there. I have 6 CPU and 8 GByte on a desktop and
kmail2 is slower than kmail1 on a remote Server with 1 GByte with 2 CPUs

I have to add my comment. I deleted the messages in the target folder and they
disappeared although from the inbox. There was only one copy in the paste bin.

Seem that one message can be displayed in more than one folder.

I didn't want to do some testing so excuse me for making more comments.
I moved 3 deleted messages form the paste bin back to inbox. Switching back to
inbox I found 5 messages. Two messages were duplicated, one only a singe copy.

Very strange behaviour. Seem there is something very buggy.

Not for productive use!

Another comment.

I could remove the duplicate messages and copied them to the target folder.
After this I could not delete the messages in the inbox. But: They appeared in
teh pastebin.

Now I have three copies in my spam folder, the inbox and the pastebin.

I deleted the messages in pastebin and the messages in the inbox disappeared.

Now I have the messages in the folder they belong to.

Maybe this tricky thing is related to the filter problem, were messages are
not moved to the destination folder.

--- Comment #19 from Thomas Arend tho...@arend-rhb.de ---
Here are my most common filters.

Some messages are moved some not.

The filter protocol is useless, because it does not log an identifier for the
message. You can't match a message to a log entry.

So I don't no what happens:
Case 1: Filters are not applied.
Case 2: Filter rules fit, but check fails. Bug in the filter test.
Case 3: Filter is applied, check positive, but command is not executed.

Without a working logging you can also ask a crystal ball.

Bug ID: 307548
  Severity: major
   Version: 4.9.1
  Priority: NOR
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
Summary: kmail2 does not update mail after piping mail throught
a script
Classification: Unclassified
OS: Linux
  Reporter: tho...@arend-rhb.de
  Hardware: Other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
 Component: filtering
   Product: kmail2

I have a script to change all occurrences of octet-stream to pkcs7-mime.

The filter log says that the filter was applied. I saved the input and output
via tee in to files.
Every thing looked as it should. octet-stream was changed to pkcs7-mime, but
the message is not updated. Even in akonadiconsole the log entry says that the
message was stored successfully.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Pipe message through a filter which modiefies parts of the header.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Old message is not replaced by new message.

Expected Results:
Old message should be replaced by the output of the filter.

[Bug 255388] Kmail filters dont work in incoming mail

2012-09-17 Thread Thomas Arend
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255388

--- Comment #68 from Thomas Arend tho...@arend-rhb.de ---
(In reply to comment #66)
Could you search your email folder for the filenames that failed? Do they
 actually exist?

3 out of 200 hundred does not seem like a bug affecting most emails but
something special which happens to a few.

What about those that report that no filters work anymore? Maybe they have
some logs which show what causes 3 out of 200 for some and all emails for
 others not getting filtered.

This test installation is much better than real life. Today I had 10% or more
of the real messages not filtered.
What makes it worst: Some deleted messages from Saturday and Sunday reappear.
But this is another bug.

I'm not very happy with the idea to provide a full log of the real life
messages.

In the log I found an entry saying, that the message could not be moved. That
is a true and obvious information. It only gives the hint that the program
tried to move but not why it failed to do so.

What about more detailed information in the filter log to make the task a bit
easier..

How can I relate the file names to the mails in the e-mail folder?

Can some body write a script to extract the needed information? This would be
helpful to users not so familiar with kmail2 / akonadi.

[Bug 255388] Kmail filters dont work in incoming mail

2012-09-15 Thread Thomas Arend
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255388

--- Comment #60 from Thomas Arend tho...@arend-rhb.de ---
Hello,

the update from 4.9 to 4.9.1 sets the target folder to for the operation
move to folder in all filters. The destination folders are lost. Here is the
part you get when you export your filters.

  action-args-0=
  action-name-0=transfer
  actions=1

This is not the case for other actions.

Nearly all filters have a destination folder and 99.99% of my incoming messages
are handled by these filters. This is why it looked as if no message was
filtered. (The rule move to folder is there but the folder is NULL. Maybe this
is the default for inbox).

This is good and bad news. Bad news is that there is some routine which
destroys filters (this happens only to destination folders as far as I can
see). Good news: Easy to fix manually when you know about it.

Second bad news: Filter don't work reliable! We will see this later. The
filtering of incoming messages don't work with a new account.

I deactivated all but one filter and set the lost target folder. Manually
filtering on selected messages worked. (You have to be a little bit patient,
the update of the message list may need some seconds even on a very fast
machine.)

Next time I activated a second filter. Filtering 970 messages (real world) in
the inbox was surprisingly fast. (Never before saw such fast filtering, another
good news, but there are enough bad left). All messages (42 fit the rule) were
correctly filtered.

In the next step I received the outstanding messages from the server. 12 of 125
messages (cron job reports) which fit the rule cron-job rule (Criteria is
X-Cron-Env: SHELL) were not filtered / moved to the destination folder.
(Criteria is X-Cron-Env: SHELL) Even after some reasonable time the messages
stayed in the inbox (Posteingang in my case).

Filtering all the left messages in the inbox manually moved the remaining
messages cron-job-reports into the folder for the cron jobs. I have no
reasonable explanation why the filter works only on 90% of the messages in the
first run.

To test this I created an new account, created a filter (see export at the end)
and send 1000 messages to the new account (kmail2t...@example.com) with
following command on the mail server.

for ((i=0 ; i1000 ; i++))
do
   echo test `printf %4.4d $i` | mail -s Filter Test `printf %4.4d $i`
kmail2t...@example.com
done

When I received the messages no message was filtered and the filter log is
empty.

I filtered some single messages. All worked fine. Filter log as you expect.
Fine.

I filtered the rest of the ~ 995 messages. All but one (0948) were moved. #948
stayed in the Posteingang.

This is the filter log entry:
[13:59:27] Applying filter action: Move Into Folder Lokale
Ordner/Posteingang/Filter Test Mails
[13:59:27] Evaluating filter rules: (match all of the following) Subject
contains Filter Test
[13:59:27] 1 = Subject contains Filter Test (Filter Test 0948)
[13:59:27] Filter rules have matched.

The log entry gives no hint why the message was not transfered. 1 of 1000 is
better than 12 from 125 but not good enough. There must be a reason. Applying
the filter manually move the message to the folder.

Below are the filter and message example.

Have a nice weekend

[Bug 306856] New: No reference to mail in the filter log

2012-09-15 Thread Thomas Arend
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=306856

Bug ID: 306856
  Severity: wishlist
   Version: 4.9.1
  Priority: NOR
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
Summary: No reference to mail in the filter log
Classification: Unclassified
OS: Linux
  Reporter: tho...@arend-rhb.de
  Hardware: Other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
 Component: filtering
   Product: kmail2

Below you see an example of a filter log entry. There is no reference to the
filtered massage (Subject, From, To, Messageid). If you received many mails and
some are filtered and some are not / filtered wrong you have no hint which
entry in the log belongs to the which message.

[20:29:33] Evaluating filter rules: (match all of the following) X-Spam-Flag
contains YES
[20:29:33] 0 = X-Spam-Flag contains YES ()
[20:29:33] Evaluating filter rules: (match all of the following) X-Cron-Env
contains SHELL
[20:29:33] 1 = X-Cron-Env contains SHELL (SHELL=/bin/sh)
[20:29:33] Filter rules have matched.
[20:29:33] Applying filter action: Move Into Folder Lokale Ordner/Cron

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Filter mail.
Actual Results:
No reference to the mail in the filter log.

Expected Results:
Reference in the filter log. Maybe the message id is the best reference to keep
the log small.

Message time, from, to, cc,subject ... would a good idea.

--- Comment #3 from Thomas Arend tho...@arend-rhb.de ---
I had installed openSUSE 12.2 and updated to 4.9.1.

Yesterday I thought the empty messages where gone, but today I found that
messages without a date are now at the end of the message list.

Its hard to get more information out of zero bytes. I kmail1 I could look in
the maildir for the messages. What information do you need?

This bug may cause trouble for other mail client. It seems that Outlook and

Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable in the message header.

Kmail2 handles the end of line (EOL) not in compliance the RfC 822. All CR
(0x0D) are dropped.

Although in 7Bit plain/text attachments the CR is dropped. This can cause a
signature to to fail.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a message in the composer
2. Send message
3. Save outgoing message in mbox format
or receive message with kmail2 or another mail client.
4. view source code with hex editor / hexdump

Actual Results:
Other mail clients have difficulties to interpret the message - especially
signed multi part messages.
Attachments are corrupted by kmail2.

Verification of signatures may fail.

Expected Results:
Instead of a LF the EOL should be signaled by the CR LF sequence ( 0x0D, 0x0A )

kmail2 should comply to RfC 822.

7.0.3 (since Kmail2 only the second worst mail client in the world - its really
not a mail client which is only a little excuse).

My work around:

1. Save mail as msg.mbox.
2. Import file in Thunderbird
3. Save the attachments.

Thanks to Mozilla for a working mail client!

This problem lives still in 4.8.5 but not so bad as before. When I receive a
bunch of cron job mails - sometimes up to 1000 - only ~15% of the mails are not
moved to the right folder. Applying the filter to all mails in the inbox does
not work. When I select only same mails the filter works.

Same thing happens with spam mails.

This nasty behavior last since month. It seems a too hard task to get the
filter working again. Must we accept the 85% solution?

Never change a running system!

I can confirm this error. I searched for a word that is included in some
messages. Neither is not in not is in gave a result.

It must have been hard work to get so many bugs in a formerly good software.

I confirm this bug for 4.8.3

Removing the button is a bad solution. It is a big deal because closing the
window does not abort the search. The search continues in the background.

 Component: commands and actions
   Product: kmail2

I receive some hundred CRON Job messages a day some times a message is received
and deleted on the server. The filter moves the message to the destination
folder. With the next manual receive this message is received again, shown for
a just a short moment in the inbox and moved to the destination folder as a
duplicate. This happens again and again so there are dozens copies ijhn the
destination folder. This stops when I deactivate the filter criteria. In this
case the message is received once an no further copies are received.

I can confirm a similar mistake.
1. I received lots of cron mails and filter the mails into a folder 1500
2. I delete all messages in the folder
3. I receive new mail
4. Two four days old messages reappear in the folder.

[Bug 300352] Corrupted From_ line with a space in the time step after colon and 2DIGIT Minutes when filtering with formail

2012-05-23 Thread Thomas Arend
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300352

--- Comment #6 from Thomas Arend tho...@arend-rhb.de ---
(In reply to comment #5)
 I don't understand.
Bug is from your formail no ?
 Kmail doesn't add it.
Otherwise give me the filter which makes it.
 Thanks

formail works fine on the command line,

If you pipe a mail through formail by kmail the white space appears before
the minutes. Construct a filter that will fit every time and send the message
through formail.

Who else could add a white space when not kmail? I see not need for formail to
say Upps, Im called by kmail! Let me add a nasty white space to confuse the
caller.

When you receive many 100 or more messages some messages show a corrupted From_
line in the message source. You will find an extra space in the time stamp:
...14: 31:55 ...

The message is filtered multiple times by the same filter and sometime multiple
times in teh message list. See attachments.
