Aborting the dispatcher will fix the problem of emails silently getting stuck
in the outbox. 

However, it will not fix the new bug I've discovered (since upgrade to Version
5.15.1) wherein the composer window gets grayed out after hitting send. It will
stay that way indefinitely and nothing will be sent. I have not discovered a
"fix" for this.

Sometimes emails do get sent out, but whenever they do you get a prompt to
create a duplicate address book entry for the recipient (i.e, asks to save a
contact that's already been saved and auto-suggested by Kmail in the field).
Here of course you have to hit dismiss.

I know all these bugs should be filed separately. But the problem with sending
are so numerous and intractable that I can't justify putting in the effort.

The bandaid here is *aborting the activity* of the "Mail Dispatcher Agent" and
restarting it. This is the only solution that works.

Seeing tons "no carrier" messages from various agents in Akonadi console when
this happens. Takes a couple round of restarting/killing kmail to get it
working again.

there, after some time I receive a notification there is a time-out.

Hello!

Also have this bug in Kmail 5.7.3 on Fedora 28 but **only** for Gmail. OAuth is
used for IMAP and it works. For SMTP have to use generated application password
(see https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833). KMail can't send
emails via Gmail account in this use case. Unfortunately can't find out how to
grab SMTP session log in Akonadi.

P.S. FYI "OAuth via SMTP (for Gmail only for now) has been merged into current
development branch and will be available in the August release of KDE

I have this problem too. Every once upon a miracle mail does get sent.

As a comment -- I don't know if that helps -- I actually resolved the issue by
reconfiguring everything from scratch.

My suspicion is that as I run git snapshots, the configuration sometimes gets
muddled up, and it results in things like emails not being sent.

I am also seeing this issue. Nothing changed in the config, and cannot send
mails... they remain in the outbox while it keeps failing and retrying...
Eventually after some retries, it does send the email.

This problem is not limited to the SSL or TLS encryption, it still does not
work with outgoing mails and attachments, regardless if encryption is active or
not.  Latest ksmtp is installed, but does not solve the problem.  

I still get a server error, and no progress bar while sending, but the mail
will be send in a background process and delivered to the receipient, but
remains in the outgoing mail folder of kmail as unsent due to an error.

OS is Arch Linux.

Fix duplicate authentication

Summary:
The response to EHLO triggers an authentication command, but with TLS
two EHLOs are sent: For the 220 from the server and after TLS negotiation.
However, sending it twice results in an unexpected "503 already authenticated"
response which ends up getting parsed by the SendJob, causing confusion.

By leaving the EHLO-resending to the SessionPrivate, the state can be properly
tracked.

Tangentially related to this issue; is it better to use SSL or TLS when a
server offers both?  I've changed to TLS to 'work around' this current issue,
but I wonder if I should just leave it that way, even when SSL is fixed.

Can you give a little more help on applying the patch on gentoo?  I tried the
patch (renamed as smtpsend.patch) in
/etc/portage/patches/kde-apps/kmailtransport-17.12.0/ and
/etc/portage/patches/kde-apps/kmail-17.12.0 and then ran ebuild  prepare and it failed in both cases.

OK, checked port and restarted Akonadi.  Got a popup saying that the message
was sent successfully.  On the console where I restarted Akonadi, I got message
saying "org.kde.pim.ksmtp: Socket error: 2".

In any event, the test email(s) went through, so it seems to be working for
TLS; I will leave it on that setting.
