[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1754911] Re: b44 Ethernet driver not working in Linux 4.15 on Inspiron 6400

2018-03-10 Thread Boris Gjenero
After installing
linux-headers-4.16.0-041600rc4_4.16.0-041600rc4.201803041930_all.deb ,
linux-headers-4.16.0-041600rc4-generic_4.16.0-041600rc4.201803041930_amd64.deb
and
linux-image-4.16.0-041600rc4-generic_4.16.0-041600rc4.201803041930_amd64.deb
from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.16-rc4/ and booting
4.16.0-041600rc4-generic I have eth0. So, apparently this is fixed in later
kernel versions.

I am still encountering
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1752081 "platform
regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db failed with error
-2" but wireless now works nevertheless. I originally reported this bug
for the wired Ethernet interface because I wasn't sure if that other bug
was causing wireless to not work. Now I'm thinking this same bug was
probably making wireless not work either.

Title:
b44 Ethernet driver not working in Linux 4.15 on Inspiron 6400

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I boot linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic then I get an eth0 interface
  and dmesg output includes:

ssb: Core 0 found: Fast Ethernet (cc 0x806, rev 0x07, vendor 0x42
  43)
  b44: Broadcom 44xx/47xx 10/100 PCI ethernet driver version 2.0
  b44 ssb1:0 eth0: Broadcom 44xx/47xx 10/100 PCI ethernet driver 00

When I boot linux-image-4.15.0-10-generic those lines don't appear and
  I don't get an eth0 interface. Doing modprobe b44 doesn't help.

This is on a Dell Inspiron 6400. I wonder if I'm running into this
  bug: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10185397/

I'm reporting it while running linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic because I
also can't get wireless to work in 4.15, so I can't report from there.

b44 Ethernet driver not working in Linux 4.15 on Inspiron 6400

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

When I boot linux-image-4.15.0-10-generic those lines don't appear and
  I don't get an eth0 interface. Doing modprobe b44 doesn't help.

This is on a Dell Inspiron 6400. I wonder if I'm running into this
  bug: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10185397/

I'm reporting it while running linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic because I

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1754911] [NEW] b44 Ethernet driver not working in Linux 4.15 on Inspiron 6400

2018-03-10 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

When I boot linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic then I get an eth0 interface
and dmesg output includes:

ssb: Core 0 found: Fast Ethernet (cc 0x806, rev 0x07, vendor 0x42
43)
b44: Broadcom 44xx/47xx 10/100 PCI ethernet driver version 2.0
b44 ssb1:0 eth0: Broadcom 44xx/47xx 10/100 PCI ethernet driver 00

When I boot linux-image-4.15.0-10-generic those lines don't appear and I
don't get an eth0 interface. Doing modprobe b44 doesn't help.

This is on a Dell Inspiron 6400. I wonder if I'm running into this bug:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10185397/

I'm reporting it while running linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic because I
also can't get wireless to work in 4.15, so I can't report from there.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1754551] Re: Kernel 3.13.0-143 breaks multi-monitor support

2018-03-10 Thread Ross Campbell
I have a Nvidia GeForce 210 card, and this kernel broke the Nvidia Video
Driver kernel module for Nvidia-340-102 video driver. System boots up
and doesn't use nvidia driver, which makes the system hardly usable for
my purposes.

Does anyone have an idea how I can attempt to further debug that issue? Or
maybe even a solution? Should I consider this issue a bug? Can I provide more

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 159356] Re: System freeze on high memory usage

2018-03-10 Thread cm
This is still happening in Ubuntu 17.10. Last time I tried to use ubuntu
it was with 16.04 and I had to stop using it because of this issue. This
is a critical bug, and I cannot understand that it is marked as low
priority and not assigned to anyone.

I cannot use Linux like this, I don't use the computer to browse web
pages and write a couple of documents, for that I would buy a tablet, I
use the computer to perform large computations, and they will overtake
the existing RAM of the computer.

I had a process that was generating a delanuay triangulation with a
large set of nodes, and it was impossible to perform this calculation in
Ubuntu, I switched to a MacBook pro with similar specs and the
computation finished in 2 min.

I have already tweaked the system using zram, zswap, changing the values
of the vm., like swappinness, etc. to no avail.

This is preventing me to change to Linux, and it should be fixed.

Title:
System freeze on high memory usage

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Arch Linux:
  New

Bug description:
I run a batch matlab job server here at my lab, running Dapper 6.06 (for the
LTS). One of the users has submitted a very memory-consuming job, which
successfully crashes the server. Upon closer inspection, the crash happens like
this:
  1. I run matlab with the given file (as an ordinary, unpriveleged user)
  2. RAM usage quickly fills up
  3. Once the RAM meter hits 100%, the system freezes: All SSH connections
freeze up, and while switching VTs directly on the machine works, no new
processes run - so one can't log in, or do anything if he is logged in.
(Sometimes typing doesn't work at all)

Note that the swap - while 7 gigs of it are available - is never used.
(The machine has 7 gigs of RAM as well)

I've tried the same on my Gutsy 32-bit box, and there was no system
freezeup - matlab simply notified that the system was out of memory.
However, it did this once memory was 100% in use - and still, swap
didn't get used at all! (Though it is mounted correctly and shows up
  in "top" and "free").

So first thing's first - I'd like to eliminate the crash issue. I
suppose I could switch the server to 32-bit, but I think that would be
a performance loss, considering that it does a lot of heavy
computation. There is no reason, however, that this should happen on a
64-bit machine anyway. Why does it?

WORKAROUND: Enabling DMA in the BIOS

A similar report exists for errors like this: 1521173 but not sure if
it is related to the wifi problem. Most commenters in that report runs
Realtek Wifi adapters while I have ath.

Removing and adding the ath_pci module or disabling and enabling wifi with

Samsung Laptop support module doesn't load

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
Similarly to Bug #1012284 "Samsung Laptop support module refuse to
load for Samsung 900X3C" I'm trying to load "samsung_laptop" in to the
kernel so that I can access functionality provided under
  /sys/devices/platform/samsung (like keyboard backlight control).

When doing a modprobe I get "No such device":
  # modprobe samsung-laptop
  FATAL: Error inserting samsung_laptop
(/lib/modules/3.5.0-27-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/samsung-laptop.ko):
No such device

I also tried a mainline build, as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds , and got the same result:
  # modprobe samsung-laptop
  FATAL: Error inserting samsung_laptop
(/lib/modules/3.9.0-999-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/samsung-laptop.ko):
No such device

2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'm not sure if this is a regression from the previous fix or simply
  slightly different hardware.

This is a "continuation" of bug 1403152, as that bug has been marked
"fix released" and recent reports of failure may (or may not) be a new
bug. Any further reports of the problem should please be reported
  here instead of that bug.

  --

  [Impact]

When shutting down and starting containers the container network
namespace may experience a dst reference counting leak which results
in this message repeated in the logs:

unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free. Usage count =
  1

This can cause issues when trying to create net network namespace and
thus block a user from creating new containers.

  [Test Case]

See comment 16, reproducer provided at https://github.com/fho/docker-
  samba-loop
