[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-15 Thread Mark Fraser
Seeing this on Kubuntu 18.04 too. The haveged work around worked
yesterday, but this morning I had to go back to 4.13 - the only previous
kernel I have installed.

Last Ok in boot was Started gnome display manager. dispatcher service
.. tem changes.pp link was shut down

Tried install lightdm from command line and the response was lastest
  already installed.

Probably it is what is coming after the lastest OK which is to be the
error. And here I have lots of guesses..

Any Ideas ? I need to do some work and I may not be waiting long.

Search and browsed and now close to give up. Yeah it is a Lenovo.

Guys: turn of auto update it is a machine killer.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-15 Thread Wes Newell
Has to be the right shift key on my 18.04lts system, but I've always
just used tapping the Esc key immediately after post until the grub menu
comes up. I explained earlier how to remove the .24 kernel. But don't
try to remove the one you are running at the time. Not sure what would
happen then.

Title:
[Dell Alienware 15 R2] WiFi + wired ethernet broken after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
With Ubuntu 14.04, and 15.10, using my Alienware 15 R2 the Intel 7265
WiFi is broken on resume from suspend. However, after suspend, it is
gone from network manager ("No network devices available"), from
ifconfig, and from lshw -class Network. It works fine prior to
  suspend.

I have tried removing the kernel module iwlwifi, before suspend and
modprobe-ing it after, but that results in no change. I also have
disabled wifi via the keyboard key, then suspended, then resumed, but
still no luck. No change after installing intel-microcode either.

Wifi does come back after resume in Windows.

  As additional data points:
This also happens with WiFi cards Killer 1535, and Intel 8260.
Also, the exact same thing happens to my wired ethernet connection as well
(it disappears from lshw -class Network) after suspend.

  WORKAROUND: cat /etc/pm/sleep.d/alienware_pci_rescan
  #! /bin/sh

  # This script rescans the PCI bus after resume from suspend to fix
  # broken WiFi, wired ethernet, and the card reader on the Alienware 15 R2.

   echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/\:00\:1c.5/rescan

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1760636] Re: ubuntu_blktrace_smoke_test failed with 4.4 / 4.15 kvm kernel

2018-07-15 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
This requires CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IO_TRACE to be enabled in the kernel.

However as this is for debugging purpose in some rare cases, we decided
to disable this test for KVM kernel.

I'm afraid I don't have access to that hardware anymore. Perhaps Vesa
can provide an update?

File received with "bluetooth file transfer" cannot be saved

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Receiving files with "bluetooth file transfer" works fine -- but just that.
The files received appear in the lower part of the app window, but you cannot
save them anywhere! Swiping to the right only shows the trash can symbol, so
literally the only thing I can do with the received files is delete them! You
can't even save them to the "Downloads" folder. What good is a file transfer
tool, if the received file cannot be used any further?
I am quite puzzled -- or am I missing something essential?

blinks). Then it won't wake up, black screen, ctrl-alt-f1 ctrl-alt-f8 have no

  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U

  Notebook: Acer Aspire A315

This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.
The default kernel of Ubuntu(18.04) hangs at loading with message:

tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 1996.250 MHz
  clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: (...), max_idle_ns:
(...)
  Soft lockup

Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1776563] Re: Acer Aspire A315 ACPI failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven)

2018-07-15 Thread Richard Baka
Hi all,

After a bit of testing the power management seems to be better but it is far
away from perfect. I don't see any anomaly watching temperature sensors
(instead of ath10k_hwmon-pci(?!??)) but my notebook is definitely warm if I
hold it on my lap.
This is more better on win10, I don't know why.

mosomaci@pc:~$ sensors
k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
Tdie: +55.0°C (high = +70.0°C)
Tctl: +55.0°C

temp1:+50.0°C (crit = +104000.0°C, hyst = -273.1°C)
power1:1.13 kW (cap = 28.00 W)

ath10k_hwmon-pci-0300
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1:+91.0°C

amdgpu-pci-0400
Adapter: PCI adapter

temp1:+55.0°C (crit = +80.0°C, hyst = +0.0°C)

Could our APIC fix not a perfect solution for this problem? I know that the
DSDT is totally broken:

Otherwise this DSDT thing is a crap. We want to go to the Mars and make
self-driving cars but we can not create a hardware configuration on
which a 27 years old operating system can be installed.

Bug description:
I have the following problem with my Bluetooth module on my new Dell
XPS 13 (9370) with Ubuntu preinstalled.

The bluetooth module gets disabled for some reason. The bluetooth
devices (keyboard and mouse) just stop working in the middle of the
work, the Bluetooth indicator goes away and the module is also gone in
  the rfkill list.

To get it back working I need to reboot the machine, start the BIOS,
disable the Bluetooth module and re-enable it or I have to turn the
machine completely off and on again. After that, the bluetooth module
is available again. That's pretty annoying.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-15 Thread delosari
Thank you Wes Newell for your reply.

I only installed ubuntu on this computer (big big big mistake) I do not
have the grub menu at start.

After typing many commands which I did not understand ubuntu started. I
have lost the sound however and now I am afraid to turn it off. If I
run:

dpkg -l | grep linux-imagerc

linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic 4.15.0-20.21
  amd64Signed kernel image generic
rc linux-image-4.15.0-22-generic 4.15.0-22.24
  amd64Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic 4.15.0-23.25
  amd64Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic 4.15.0-24.26
  amd64Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic 4.15.0.23.25
  amd64Generic Linux kernel image

And currently:

uname -r:
4.15.0-24-generic

Which commands should I run to purge that kernel and run the previous
one? Should I do it from tty? or from the current session? Should I wait
for an update or will that make it worse...

Last Ok in boot was Started gnome display manager. dispatcher service

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2018-07-15 Thread László Tóth
Same problem: Lenovo Z50, Radeon R6 R7 graphics, AMD FX 7500 CPU. The
bug is definitely corresponds to the new Ubuntu version because the
previously 16.04 version worked almost smoothly. (I changed it because
of very slow boot process - it is a bit faster in 18.04).

Nect to the overheating the system often freezes. The desktop stops,
freezes and after half a minit everything is will be almost fine. I
could check it and the same time CPU usage was extremely high.

The problem presents both Wayland and Xorg but uder Xorg it is less
frequently.

Bug description:
Ubuntu is overheating at my laptop. Opening youtube on firefox is
  enough for critical temperature shutdown.

Using lm-sensors for monitoring on 18.04 the temp varies between 70 and 85°C
with only firefox or chrome open and doing nothing.
On my old 16.04 with same using, the temp varies between 55 and 70°C.

First thought was the driver nouveau is the problem, and finally I was
able to install by add "nouveau.modeset=0" at livecd boot options,
  without temp shutdown.

After install I disable the nouveau at modprobe blacklist, but the
system continues overheating and shutdown with basic usage.

I have no idea what's happening with the bionic at my laptop.

  My laptop is a Samsung RF411 i5 2nd Generation and Geforce 540M.

Actually, I take that back - my testing (on a different machine) with
image-generic-hwe-16.04-edge in xenial is giving inconsistent results.

  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Ethernet r8169 stops working after system resumed from suspend.

  [Test]
User confirmed these patches fix the issue. r8169 continues to work
  after resume from suspend.

  [Regression Potential]
Medium. The fix is limited to one device, all patches are in mainline.
The WOL default change might cause regression for users that depend on
BIOS settings. We can advice them to use userspace tool (systemd,
  ethtool, etc.) instead.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have noticed that the network stopped working on my desktop after I've
suspended the system and woke it up. On dmesg there are messages like:

  [ 150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
  [ 150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
  [ 150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
  [ 150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
happening. This is happening on Bionic.

There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
  1) Reboot the system;
  2) Remove the r8169 module and reinsert it with modprobe.

The motherboard is a AsRock H55M-LE and the Ethernet controller is:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)

  [ 150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
  [ 150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
  [ 150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
  [ 150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
happening. This is happening on Bionic.

There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
  1) Reboot the system;

Title:
  Frequent hangs / lockups with "[drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]]
*ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A"

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Fairly recently I got an old HP Pavillion 14 laptop and installed
Kubuntu 17.10 on it. As far as I recall it ran fine, however, not long
after I upgraded to 18.04 and noticed frequent freezing (approx every
few hours). When this happens, all of a sudden, the screen just stays
with it's image immobile and unchanging. There is no visual corruption
onscreen and even the cursor does not move. Ctrl+alt+F[1-9] and
  alt+ctrl+sysrq+RSEINUB do nothing.

Often when I look at the logs, at the end of kern.log.1 I see:

[drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on
  pipe A (start=96545 end=96546) time 394 us, min 763, max 767, scanline
  start 760, end 778

Sometimes, earlier on, there is also:

Could not find key with description: [d4628bf1c812c861]
  process_request_key_err: No key
Could not find valid key in user session keyring for sig specified in mount
option: [d4628bf1c812c861]
One or more global auth toks could not properly register; rc = [-2]
Error parsing options; rc = [-2]

I tested, and this also occurs in a brand new live usb of 18.04, and
noticed that it still happens there, even before any upgrades or
installation of packages (such as the wireless driver).

Other than the wireless driver, there are no proprietary drivers
  installed (eg Nvidia, FGLRX etc).

Is there any more info I can provide to help troubleshoot this?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1771749] Re: Ethernet connection lost after few minutes since starting

2018-07-15 Thread Victor Marin
AFAIK it not longer loses the Internet connection itself, but if I
unplug the ethernet cable then the network manager becomes red and not
any Internet connection is detected anymore when I re-connect the
ethernet cable. Only a restart makes the network manager to get the
normal color and to detect the Internet connection again.

On the other hand, I don't know what it means nor how to find the first
bad -rc kernel.

This is the kernel version I have installed:

~$ uname -r
4.15.0-24-generic

I just did an:
# apt update

Then an:
# apt upgrade

And it tells that the system is up to date.

Title:
Ethernet connection lost after few minutes since starting

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

This is the same bug I notified at Bug #1770848 but with a more precise
selection of (what I think it is) the package affected and a better description.

I made a few days ago a fresh install of the Kubuntu 18.04 LTS and it
is most everything Ok, but -I think that- the network-manager has a
  problem.

In the last LTS version, Kubuntu 16.04, nor in any Linux version if I
remember well, I never lost connection through Ethernet (the only
Internet connection with our desktop PC), but the Bionic Beaver loses
the connection every now and then, perhaps within few minutes or
hours, but several times per day.

When the connection is lost, I note that it disappears any info even
mention to any network into the network window and the network manager
  icon becomes red color.

Not matter if I unplug and then plug the ethernet cable again, the
ethernet connection is not longer detected and only restarting the PC
makes the connection to work again.

Incidentally, I also have noticed with this version of Kubuntu 18.04
that in my laptop there is also now a similar problem with the
scanner: If I plug it in some USB port of the laptop once Kubuntu
18.04 is already running, it's not detected by Xsane. I have to plug
it in before than pressing the power button or at the time of starting
the OS, for the scanner to be detected by the scanning program (and
then only works with Xsane, not if I use Simple Scan or Skanlite, even
when it works under Xsane), as I said in the Bug #1771525 and, evenly,
if I unplug the scanner cable from the USB port it is not detected
anymore when plugging it again, and only restarting the laptop makes
  it to be detected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1776887] Re: Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after suspend

2018-07-15 Thread Alan Jenkins
Is there an estimate for when users will receive the SRU? (Which was
submitted on 2018-06-29). So far I've seen 8 separate questions on
askubuntu.com which match this bug. Poke :-).

Title:
Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash
  after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  == SRU Justification ==

This upstream bug has been confirmed to affect Ubuntu users[1]. As
per the fix commit (below), the most frequent symptom is a crash of
Xorg/Xwayland, i.e. killing the entire GUI, when a laptop is woken
from system sleep. Frequency of the bug is described as once every
  few days[2].

[1] E.g. this user confirms the bug & very specific workaround:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1760450/comments/11
[2] E.g. this log of crashes:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553979#c23

This is a bug in blk-core.c. It is not specific to any one hardware
driver. Technically the suspend bug is triggered by the SCSI core -
which is used by *all SATA devices*.

The commit also includes a test which quickly and reliably proves the
  existence of a horrifying bug.

I guess you might avoid this bug only if you have root on NVMe. The
other way to not hit the Xorg crash is if you don't use all your RAM,
so there's no pressure that leads to cold pages of Xorg being swapped.
Also, you won't reproduce the Xorg crash if you suspend+resume
immediately. (This frustrated my tests at one point, it only
triggered after left the system suspended over lunch :).

Fix: "block: do not use interruptible wait anywhere"

  in kernel 4.17:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/1dc3039bc87ae7d19a990c3ee71cfd8a9068f428

  in kernel 4.16.8:
  https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
  stable.git/commit/?h=linux-4.16.y=7859056bc73dea2c3714b00c83b253d4c22bf7b6

lack of fix in 4.15.0-24.26 (ubuntu 18.04): https://git.launchpad.net
  /~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/bionic/tree/block/blk-
  core.c?id=Ubuntu-4.15.0-24.26#n856

I.e., this bug is still present in Ubuntu source package
  linux-4.15.0-24.26 (and 4.15.0-23.25). I attach hardware details
(lspci-vnvn.log) of a system where this bug is known to happen.

  Regards
  Alan

  WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter:
  scsi_mod.scan=sync

  == Fix ==
1dc3039bc87a ("block: do not use interruptible wait anywhere")

  == Regression Potential ==
Low. This patch has been sent to stable, so it has had additional
  upstream review.

  == Test Case ==
A test kernel was built with this patch and tested by the original bug
reporter.
The bug reporter states the test kernel resolved the bug.

It's not clear if there is a driver for this codec and clearly the intel
