[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1765660] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 [ briggs ]: "ipcs" command fails with error "invalid structure member offset" in crash prompt.

2019-02-17 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Hello bugproxy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted crash into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/crash/7.2.1-1ubuntu2
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
ipcs command could not be used with the bionic GA kernel on ppc64le.

  [Test Case]
The ipcs command has been run after the fix was applied to crash, on live
amd64, ppc64el and s390x system. In fact, the new upload introduces a test to
verify this bug does not happen again.

  [Regression Potential]
We have only introduced the fix for this specific bug, also adding a test for
it. It's less likely to be more broken than the current version on the release
as an entire new upstream version could be.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1798863] Re: 18.10 kernel does not appear to validate kernel module signatures correctly

18.10 kernel does not appear to validate kernel module signatures
  correctly

Status in linux source package in Cosmic:
  Fix Released
Status in shim source package in Cosmic:

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

Impact: An bug in the secure boot lockdown patches in the 18.10 kernel
causes the results of module signature verification to be ignored,
allowing modules with no signature or an invalid signature to be
loaded. A second bug results in the MOK not being trusted for signing
modules, but this bug has been masked by the first bug.

Fix: These bugs should be fixed together to avoid regressions in dkms
module loading under secure boot. First, fix the latter bug by
trusting keys in the kernel's secondary keyring for module signing.
Then fix the former bug by removing code related to trusting IMA
signatures for loading modules under kernel lockdown.

Test Case: Confirm the following behavior under kernel lockdown:

1) Unsigned modules cannot be loaded.

2) Modules signed with an untrusted key cannot be loaded.

3) Modules signed with the kernel's ephemeral build-time key can be
  loaded.

4) Modules signed with a MOK which has been enrolled with shim can
  be loaded.

I have tested to verify these conditions with the proposed fixes.

Regression Potential: This restores the behavior from previous Ubuntu
releases, so no regressions are expected wrt those releases. In some
cases modules that were loading under lockdown might no longer load,
but this is the intended behavior.

  ---

On a system with Ubuntu 18.10, with secure boot enabled, and a key
enrolled in the MOK database, I am observing the following peculiar
  behaviors:

  * Signature verification appears to be disabled, and cannot be enabled again.
It appeared to be enabled previously, as loading of unsigned modules was
failing, and `mokutil --enable-validation` runs without incident; however, upon
the next boot when attempting to confirm the change, MokManager prints an error
message "Unable to delete Secure Boot state" after completing the password
challenge.
  * As a result of signature verification being disabled, modules signed with
untrusted keys taint the kernel instead of failing to load outright.
  * Regardless of signature verification being enabled or not, it seems that
the key enrolled in the MOK is not being used for validating kernel module
signatures. Modules signed with the key still fail the signature verification
test and taint the kernel, even though the key is visible in the output of
`mokutil --list-enrolled`, and testing the key with `mokutil --test-key` shows
that it's enrolled. Also, a message acknowledging the key appears in dmesg:
Loaded UEFI:MokListRT cert 'nvidia-installer generated signing key:
90c957eb56dfb04d8734d54fb614ef5af6c69318' linked to secondary sys keyring
  * Also, somewhat strangely, in this state with module signature verification
not being enforced, attempting to load a completely unsigned kernel module
suceeds, and doesn't even log a kernel message about a missing/invalid
signature, or taint the kernel.

Apport report attached, which includes dmesg log showing the kernel
acknowledging the key enrolled in the MOK database, and a signature
verification failure and subsequent successful loading of a module
  signed with that key:

   [4.234093] Loaded UEFI:MokListRT cert 'nvidia-installer generated
signing key: 90c957eb56dfb04d8734d54fb614ef5af6c69318' linked to secondary sys

This system dual-boots Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.10: when booted into Ubuntu
18.04, signatures made with the same key are recognized as valid. Hence, I
suspect that something changed in the Ubuntu 18.10 kernel which is causing
signature verification to function in an unexpected way.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1811755] Re: X1 Extreme: only one of the two SSDs is loaded

2019-02-17 Thread Tim Penhey
It seems my install was missing the linux-generic package. After
installing that I was able to get linux-generic 4.15.0.46.48 from
bionic-proposed.

Installing this removed the windows boot option from my grub config.

Rebooting 12 times, 10 times were good, twice I got dumped into
initramfs. Photo attached.

The fix limits to Intel 760p/Pro 7600p SSD, and the fix has been
  verified by the bug reporter.

  -

I bought a new Thinkpad X1 Extreme, and had it come with two SSDs, one
256G and the other 512G with the intention of keeping the windows on
the 256G disk and using the 512G for linux.

When dealing with the installer, it only ever saw one of the SSDs. I
did manged to get bionic installed on the 512, but on boot, sometimes
it doesn't find the 512G disk and I just get a blank screen. After a
hard power-off, and reboot, it drops into the grub selector, and
choosing linux, it failed again, but this time dropped into a VT.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1810416] Re: SD card error mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card

2019-02-17 Thread K4LiN
I've got the same issue on Dell e5470 with Manjaro. Tried kernel v4.19, v4.20,
v4.4
The issue is visible on each kernel. The card is brand new and works perfectly
fine on camera and on Windows booted on the same machine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport

2019-02-17 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
I think I may have run into another issue related to the same bug. While
the login loop problem appears to have been fixed, the fix does not seem
to have cascaded down to other prompts that one may encounter in special
circumstances. In my case, I had an external USB drive connected to my
server and this happened to have been powered off (physically) when
booting. As expected, the system did not complete the boot process and
stopped (momentarily) at the "Enter Ctrl-D etc" prompt to allow repair.
Well, it just kept going. I was unable to get in at all and eventually
just had to physically reset the box and reconnect power to the USB
drive. So the looping that used to happen at the console login persists
when dropping to the emergency shell. I will be grateful if anyone else
can confirm. Just add a spurious entry to fstab and try to reboot.

  Hi,

The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches
  including:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b

But have not applied the more recent

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0
  patch.

This second patch is required to prevent a rather serious regression
where userspace applications reading from stdin can receive EAGAIN
  when they should not.

I will try to link correspondence from the mailing list archives once
they are available, but for now if you have access to the linux-
console mailing list you can find discussion under the thread
"Userspace break? read from STDIN returns EAGAIN if tty is "touched"".

I would appreciate it if this could be examined soon as it is a
  regression on userspace.

  Thanks
  Michael

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1798863] Re: 18.10 kernel does not appear to validate kernel module signatures correctly

18.10 kernel does not appear to validate kernel module signatures

Status in linux source package in Cosmic:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1763594] Re: xhci hangs; reset results in NULL pointer dereference

2019-02-17 Thread Deltik
Kai-Heng,

Actually, I saw that the fix just landed in bionic-proposed in version
4.15.0-46.49 on 2019-02-15, so bionic-updates and bionic-security don't
have the fix yet as of today.

xHC stops to work after some time. This happens when the xHC gets

  [Test]
User reports this backport fixes the issue.

  [Fix]
In addition to check EINT, also check ports' status.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. It fixes a known bug and it's in -stable.

  ===Original Bug Report===

Now and then, my xhci bus will hang, resulting in these kinds of
  messages in dmesg:

  [252220.002102] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHC is not running.
[252220.037491] xhci_hcd :00:14.0: xHCI host controller not responding,

[252220.243317] usb 1-9: USB disconnect, device number 5

Usually, I can fix this bij resetting the bus by calling a script
  reset-xhci:

for xhci in /sys/bus/pci/drivers/?hci_hcd ; do
    cd $xhci
    echo Resetting devices from $xhci...
    for i in :??:??.? ; do
  echo -n "$i" > unbind
  echo -n "$i" > bind
    done
  done

But doing this today resulted in a kernel bug:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1776563] Re: Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven) / AMDGPU Hybrid crash

2019-02-17 Thread Kalin Stoyanov
Looks like when not using "pci=noacpi", Xorg takes 100% of one of my cpu
cores and that's what is causing the slowdown. I don't know how to
resolve this though.. @to_load maybe the same happens to you as well?

Bug description:
  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U
  VGA: Radeon 535
  Notebook: Acer Aspire A315

This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.
The default kernel of Ubuntu(18.04) hangs at loading with message:

tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 1996.250 MHz
  clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: (...), max_idle_ns:
(...)
  Soft lockup

Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808957] Re: Dell XPS 13 (9370) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep

2019-02-17 Thread Owen Williams
I'd like the second the suggestion that s2idle sleep not be used at
least on this model until the power usage issues have been worked out.
It wasn't easy to figure out what the problem was and the battery drain
will significantly reduce the lifespan of the laptop for users that
don't know to change the setting.

Title:
Dell XPS 13 (9370) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
It seems that the Dell 9370 is set to go into s2idle mode rather than
deep sleep, forgoing significant power savings.

I have confirmed this by suspending and then checking:
sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2. If the output is

  PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
  PM: suspend exit

  cat /sys/power/mem_sleep showed

  [s2idle] deep

As a temporary fix, I typed
  echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
as a root user (sudo -i).

Then the output of cat /sys/power/mem_sleep was
  s2idle [deep]

  After suspending now,
sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2 returns

  PM: suspend entry (deep)
  PM: suspend exit

I have made this permanent by editing
  /etc/default/grub

  and replacing
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
  with
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"

then regenerating my grub configuration (sudo grub-mkconfig -o
  /boot/grub/grub.cfg).

This appears to be working with no ill effects.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1799237] Re: mprotect fails on ext4 with dax

2019-02-17 Thread Christian Priebe
I have not had a chance to try and reproduce the issue with the example
mentioned in this bug report but I have been able to verify that the
kernel in bionic-proposed fixes the problem I have reported in the
following bug report that has been rightfully marked as a duplicate:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1813179

Steps I took to install the bionic-porposed kernel:

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ $(lsb_release
-sc)-proposed restricted main universe"
sudo apt -y update
sudo apt-get -t bionic-proposed install linux-generic
 # Reboot

After reboot:

cpriebe@x:~$ uname -a
Linux x 4.15.0-46-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Wed Feb 6 09:33:07 UTC 2019 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

cpriebe@x:~$ sudo apt-cache policy linux-generic
linux-generic:
  Installed: 4.15.0.46.48
  Candidate: 4.15.0.46.48
  Version table:
 *** 4.15.0.46.48 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-proposed/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Considering the other bug has been marked as a duplicate I assume it is okay
for me to change the tag on this. If this is not okay, please let me know
and/or change it back.

Title:
[HP Spectre x360 - 15-df0008nc] Battery is drained in the laptop sleep
  mode

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
[HP Spectre x360 - 15-df0008nc] Battery is significantly drained in
the laptop sleep mode. Over the night the fully charged laptop battery
will get empty while kept the laptop in sleep mode. The symptoms are
the same with or without connected USB-C dock.

As a workaround also it is not possible to enable deep sleep.

  Full laptop specification is here:
  https://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c06200426

Enabling deep sleep results into failure:
  $ sudo echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
  bash: /sys/power/mem_sleep: Permission denied.

Additionally also not possible to enable deep sleep by updating grub
  loader.

  # editing /etc/default/grub
  # Adding
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"
  sudo update-grub
  # reboot laptop and still gets s2idle
  $ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

  $ sudo echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
  bash: /sys/power/mem_sleep: Permission denied.

Additionally also not possible to enable deep sleep by updating grub
  loader.

  # editing /etc/default/grub
  # Adding
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"
  sudo update-grub
  # reboot laptop and still gets s2idle
  $ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

  $ sudo echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
  bash: /sys/power/mem_sleep: Permission denied.

Additionally also not possible to enable deep sleep by updating grub
  loader.

  # editing /etc/default/grub
  # Adding
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"
  sudo update-grub
  # reboot laptop and still gets s2idle
  $ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

  $ sudo echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
  bash: /sys/power/mem_sleep: Permission denied.

Additionally also not possible to enable deep sleep by updating grub
  loader.

  # editing /etc/default/grub
  # Adding
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"
  sudo update-grub
  # reboot laptop and still gets s2idle
  $ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1815857] Re: linux-firmware is missing ctefx-sbz.bin for snd_hda_codec_ca0132

2019-02-17 Thread Seth Forshee
That thread states the firmware was taken from the Windows driver, which
isn't surprising. No license information is given, and it would be
pretty unusual for a Windows driver to be licensed in a way that would
allow us to distribute firmware files taken from it.
