  Ubuntu 16.04 kernel 4.4.0-202 basic commands hanging

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Hi there,
  I've updated kernel on my Ubuntu 16.04 from 4.4.0-201-generic to
4.4.0.202-generic today and it broke my system.
  Basic commands, such as pidof, lsof, ps fax (ps -a works) hang indefinitely
and not even root issued kill -KILL will terminate them. Only thing that helps
is to kill the shell that started such commands.

  I had to reboot back to 4.4.0-201, however during shutdown various
  stop jobs hanged as well and after more than 25 minutes I had to go
  for hard reboot.

  My current—NOT BROKEN—kernel has signature (cat /proc/version_signature):
  Ubuntu 4.4.0-201.233-generic 4.4.247

  I am attaching the lspci-vnvn.log, also created with the non-broken
  kernel.

Thanks Kleber, I see now that this is what happens when you check a
checkbox (Pre-released updates) and five years later don't even remember
it. :-)

  The previous kernel 3.13.0-58.97 does not show the issue when booting back
into it. Currently only noticed on starting Steam but there its is reproducable
every time on X230 laptop (Intel graphics). Might be related to Steam using
32bit libraries.
  Attaching some log and dump that steam produces but fails to upload

Title:
  Old legacy Python errors under the new kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I am using some very old installation of Zope server with its own
  archaic Python. Under new kernel (3.13.0-59-generic
  #98~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 21:05:34 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64
  x86_64 GNU/Linux) any call of os.system in this Python fails with
  error code 139 (SIGSEV), under previous kernels (until 3.13.0-58) it
  worked OK:

  $ /opt/zope/bin/python
  Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 19 2002, 13:15:46)
  [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)] on linux2
  Type copyright, credits or license for more information.
   import os
   os.system('pwd')
  139

  Obviously I am not sure whether the source of the problem is kernel or
  not, all I know then after rebooting with older kernel my application
  works all right, when rebooting with 3.13.0-59 it crashes on those
  failed os.system calls.

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit.

  works all right, when rebooting with 3.13.0-59 it crashes on those
  failed os.system calls.

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit.

Title:
  Old legacy Python errors under the new kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I am using some very old installation of Zope server with its own
  archaic Python. Under new kernel (3.13.0-59-generic
  #98~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 21:05:34 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64
  x86_64 GNU/Linux) any call of os.system in this Python fails with
  error code 139 (SIGSEV), under previous kernels (until 3.13.0-58) it
  worked OK:

  $ /opt/zope/bin/python
  Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 19 2002, 13:15:46)
  [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)] on linux2
  Type copyright, credits or license for more information.
   import os
   os.system('pwd')

  #98~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 21:05:34 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64
  x86_64 GNU/Linux) any call of os.system in this Python fails with
  error code 139 (SIGSEV), under previous kernels (until 3.13.0-58) it
  worked OK:

  $ /opt/zope/bin/python
  Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 19 2002, 13:15:46)
  [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)] on linux2
  Type copyright, credits or license for more information.
   import os
   os.system('pwd')

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1479111] [NEW] Old legacy Python errors under the new kernel

2015-07-28 Thread Marcel Svitalsky
Public bug reported:

I am using some very old installation of Zope server with its own
archaic Python. Under new kernel (3.13.0-59-generic #98~precise1-Ubuntu
SMP Fri Jul 24 21:05:34 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) any
call of os.system in this Python fails with error code 139 (SIGSEV),
under previous kernels (until 3.13.0-58) it worked OK:

$ /opt/zope/bin/python
Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 19 2002, 13:15:46)
[GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)] on linux2
Type copyright, credits or license for more information.
 import os
 os.system('pwd')
139

Obviously I am not sure whether the source of the problem is kernel or
not, all I know then after rebooting with older kernel my application
works all right, when rebooting with 3.13.0-59 it crashes on those
failed os.system calls.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit.

Title:
  Old legacy Python errors under the new kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I am using some very old installation of Zope server with its own
  archaic Python. Under new kernel (3.13.0-59-generic
  #98~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 21:05:34 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64
  x86_64 GNU/Linux) any call of os.system in this Python fails with
  error code 139 (SIGSEV), under previous kernels (until 3.13.0-58) it
  worked OK:

  $ /opt/zope/bin/python
  Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 19 2002, 13:15:46)
  [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)] on linux2
  Type copyright, credits or license for more information.
   import os
   os.system('pwd')

  #98~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 24 21:05:34 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64
  x86_64 GNU/Linux) any call of os.system in this Python fails with
  error code 139 (SIGSEV), under previous kernels (until 3.13.0-58) it
  worked OK:

  $ /opt/zope/bin/python
  Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 19 2002, 13:15:46)
  [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)] on linux2
  Type copyright, credits or license for more information.
   import os
   os.system('pwd')
