[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1858844] Re: [Dell XPS 15 9575] Screen brightness stopped working with linux-image-5.4.0-9-generic
As per prev. comment, the test kernel re-enables the keyboard brightness setting. However, the slider in the Gnome panel menu is not being moved when using the keyboard keys. Dragging the slider with the mouse does change the brightness, though. (May be related: The volume slider in the panel menu & the volume keys show the same behaviour: the volume keys work but do not affect the slider) And by the way, the brightness problem also occurs on Asus Zenbook Flip UX561UD, and the test kernel behaves in the same way, keys work but slider unaffected. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1858844 Title: [Dell XPS 15 9575] Screen brightness stopped working with linux- image-5.4.0-9-generic Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I upgraded to Focal Fossa 3 days ago and nothing broke. I also see no change with BIOS 1.10.0 on Eoan (though with kernel 5.3 due to an unrelated issue; I ran 5.4 and 5.5 before with the 1.7.1 BIOS and had the problem with all three kernels). I also noticed that though I have the problem just for ca 13 secs most of the time, occasionally it never seems to start working (I waited more than a minute). However, a few times recently I sent the laptop to sleep with the power button while the problem was occurring. The power button works even when the keyboard does not, and on wake-up the problem was gone. It is possible that I happened to press the button exactly when the keyboard would have worked anyway, but as the procedure helped every time this seems unlikely. The BIOS 1.9.1 from prev. comment #50 apparently was pulled by Dell, there is no reason given at the link. I have a 9575 from September/October 2019 and BIOS 1.7.1 (from Aug 7, 2019, which is currently the latest one available on the Dell site (and, side note, fixes the annoying fans-always-on-in-tent-mode issue)), and I have the same behavior as described in comment #48, i.e. it is unresponsive for 30 secs at the login screen, then works fine. Still same problem in Focal Fossa with kernel 5.4. I am pretty sure I did not have this in previous BIOSes ( but not 100% sure. As someone asked, yes it is possible to downgrade BIOS, I went through them all bewteen 1.1.6 and 1.7.1 up and down to narrow down the known tent-fan and touchpad-lower-half-randomly-failing issues). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1822394 Title: [Dell BIOSes dated 27 Mar 2019, XPS 9575, Precision 5530 2-in-1] laptop keyboard & touchpad not working at gdm screen after boot Status in libinput package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: On a dell XPS 15 2-in-1 with the latest 1.4.0 bios, my touchpad and keyboard are unresponsive at the gdm login screen. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1721345] Re: ALC295 codec seems to have Master and PCM channels swapped
Still occurs with Ubuntu 19.04 on Asus ZenBook Flip 15 UX561UD. The workaround helped. Codec: Realtek ALC295 ** Attachment added: "alsa-info.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1721345/+attachment/5269644/+files/alsa-info.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1721345 Title: ALC295 codec seems to have Master and PCM channels swapped Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When trying to use pulseaudio to control volume on my ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550VE *uses AC295 audio codec) I noticed that pulseuadio is varying the Master ALSA channel. If I vary that channel in alsamixer I get no variation in volume. If I vary the PCM channel instead I get the desired effect that volume buttons should have. Since pulseaudio varies the Master channel by default and does not respect any configuration settings telling it to use other settings, I suggest swapping these two channels so that pulseaudio works out of the box. Press Fn+F3/F4 in fresh install from current Cosmic desktop image, fully updated -> Keyboard backlight should come on or change but doesn't. The gnome-shell pop-up icon for the keyboard backlight appears for both keys, but the icon's "progress" bar is not visible. Kernel version is linux-image-4.17.0-9-generic This is the same in X and Wayland session. In case it matters, Nvidia binary drivers are installed but Nvidia is switched off via Prime setting in nvidia-settings. Running with Intel drivers The keyboard backlight works perfectly when booting from the 18.04.1 desktop live image. When turning on light with 18.04.1, it is off again after rebooting into 18.10. (However 18.04.1 seems to freeze when shutting down from menu, I have to hard-shut it off). Most other important Fn+Fx special keys on this laptop work (display brightness, touchpad off, sound) except for the airplane mode key. However the airplane mode key only fails in gnome-shell but works on the console (this is filed as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1791367) (Not working are a key that seems to mean "display off" and another of unclear purpose that never worked on any laptop I ever saw, maybe "presentation mode" as it seems to depict a flip chart or projection screen). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1796550] Re: [regression] Keyboard brightness control keys (down/up) don't work in cosmic (upower 0.99.8)
Some feedback for Cosmic: FWIW, I can confirm that the update did NOT break the keyboard backlight key on Dell XPS 15 9575, where it had already worked flawlessly out-of- the-box with Cosmic since installation in early September (contrary to the bug description above stating that "keyboard backlight control keys don't work in cosmic") At the time also submitted the similar bug #1791372, "Keyboard backlight not working on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop in Cosmic 18.10, works with 18.04.1 desktop installer live image". [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1792813] Re: iio-sensor-proxy says: "Could not find any supported sensors" on Dell XPS 15 9575 2-in-1 on Cosmic 18.10
Update after playing with this a bit: While the sensors are detected by the mainline rc4 (and rc5) kernel as stated above, the rotation does not work correctly. I am not sure if this is still a kernel issue or happens elsewhere. Would be great if you could point me in the right direction. According to the output of the monitor-sensor command of iio-proxy- sensor, it detects the correct orientation in all attempts. However, in some scenarios something rotates the screen back to normal automatically and immediately. When this happens, monitor-sensor does NOT output a switch to "normal". So I suppose the sensor outputs remain correctly detected and the switching back happens elsewhere. On the other hand, this may be connected to a hardware quirk in how the rotation is implemented on the Dell XPS, which similarly also occurs in Windows (https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/Dell-XPS-13-9365-Rotation-lock-unavailable-grayed-out-EXPLAINED/td-p/6075400): * Laptop mode, i.e. keyboard-to-screen angle BELOW 90 degrees: In Windows, this automatically engages the rotation lock, i.e. the screen does not rotate at all. * Tent/tablet mode, i.e. keyboard-to-screen angle ABOVE 90 degrees: In Windows, this releases the rotation lock automatically. The behavior I see in Ubuntu also depends on the keyboard-screen angle. However, the rotation lock in the Gnome panel does NOT automatically engage if the angle is below 90 degrees. This is what happens: * Angle BELOW 90: - Orientation "left-up": screen rotates to portrait correctly, but immediately switches back to normal. - Orientation "right-up": screen rotates to portrait correctly and in most attempts stays like this, but occasionally it immediately switches back to normal. - Orientation "bottom-up": screen rotates rotates upside-down correctly, but immediately switches back to normal. - Orientation "normal": screen always rotates back correctly (if it didn't automatically switch back anyway). * Angle ABOVE 90: - Orientation "left-up": screen rotates to portrait correctly and in most attempts stays like this, but occasionally it immediately switches back to normal. - Orientation "right-up": screen rotates to portrait correctly and apparently randomly either stays like this or immediately switches back to normal. - Orientation "bottom-up": screen rotates rotates upside down correctly most of the time (but occasionally doesn't). - Orientation "normal": screen always rotates back correctly (if it didn't automatically switch back anyway). As you can see, the "left-up" and "right-up" behaviors seem somewhat (but not entirely) swapped depending on the keyboard-screen angle. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1792813 Title: iio-sensor-proxy says: "Could not find any supported sensors" on Dell XPS 15 9575 2-in-1 on Cosmic 18.10 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in linux source package in Cosmic: Triaged Bug description: On Cosmic, iio-sensor-proxy 2.4, with default 4.18 kernel as well as latest mainline 4.19.0-041900rc3-generic. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1791372] Re: Keyboard backlight not working on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop in Cosmic 18.10, works with 18.04.1 desktop installer live image
Fixed in mainline 4.19 rc4 ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1791372 Title: Keyboard backlight not working on Asus ZenBook Flip UX561UD laptop in Cosmic 18.10, works with 18.04.1 desktop installer live image Status in acpid package in Ubuntu: New Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Repro: 1. Public bug reported: On Cosmic, iio-sensor-proxy 2.4, with default 4.18 kernel as well as latest mainline 4.19.0-041900rc3-generic. There is no rotation lock button in the gnome-shell panel menu. Gnome Settings > Device Display shows rotation buttons There is no directory /sys/bus/iio Reproduction: 1. Rotate device, fold display back to tent and tablet modes: -> Rotation is not detected. When folding to tablet mode, device goes to suspend as if display had been closed normally. iio-sensor-proxy finds no sensors: ~$ systemctl status iio-sensor-proxy.service ● iio-sensor-proxy.service - IIO Sensor Proxy service Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/iio-sensor-proxy.service; static; vendor preset: enabled) Active: inactive (dead) I reported issue as https://github.com/hadess/iio-sensor- proxy/issues/236 and was advised: "Looks like there's no supported sensors, or just no sensors inside this machine. Nothing that we can do about it, except asking your vendor for support (eg. is there one or multiple sensors, and if so, why aren't they supported in the kernel)" I posted the issue in Dell's Project Sputnik's Google+ community ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.10 Package: linux-image-4.18.0-7-generic 4.18.0-7.8 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.18.0-7.8-generic 4.18.5 Uname: Linux 4.18.0-7-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.10-0ubuntu9 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: mario 2139 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Sun Sep 16 20:20:48 2018 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-09-13 (2 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish" - Alpha amd64 (20180912) Lsusb: Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0489:e0a2 Foxconn / Hon Hai Bus 001 Device 004: ID 27c6:5395 Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:58f4 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1055475] Re: [Apple Inc. MacBookPro5, 4] suspend/resume failure [non-free: wl]
This was resolved somewhere along the way long ago ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1055475 Title: [Apple Inc. MacBookPro5,4] suspend/resume failure [non-free: wl] Status in Linux: Confirmed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Note: When the problem occurred and the apport bug report was created, the non-free wl module was loaded (compiled from bcmwl-kernel-source) to enable the Broadcom wifi. However, the same problem happens after removing the wl module and rebooting. On this machine, suspend/resume has worked in released Ubuntu versions since its purchase mid-2009, when IIRC it received a development version install of Karmic (9.10). Hibernate/resume worked just as reliably. The latest fresh install was Oneiric (11.10), later upgraded to Precise (12.04) after release. The machine usually ran the proprietary NVidia graphics drivers, therefore I am unsure if suspend/hibernate/resume also worked with the nouveau drivers (however I seem to remember so). I now performed a reinstall with 12.04.1 (using the BIOS image, not the EFI image) and immediately upgraded to Quantal. (For some reason I could not make Quantal CDs boot). The machine is now using the nouveau drivers because currently the backlight adjustment does not work with NVidia drivers. In Quantal with nouveau, resume from suspend never worked for me. When going into suspended state all at first appears fine. However, the machine does not resume properly. When trying to resume, the fan and optical drive starts, however the screen remains black and I can't tell if its responsive. I pressed the power button for 5 seconds and the machine rebooted fine. After logging in, an apport prompt appeared, from which I created this bug report. I don't know about hibernate since due to using an encrypted home directory it is not available anymore. WORKAROUND: Resume works correctly with the proprietary nvidia-current drivers. (However 18.04.1 seems to freeze when shutting down from menu, I have to hard-shut it off). Most other Fn+Fx special keys on this laptop work (display brightness, touchpad off, sound etc.) except for the airplane mode key. However the airplane mode key only fails in gnome-shell but works on the console (this is filed as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- shell/+bug/1791367) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.10 Package: linux-image-4.17.0-9-generic 4.17.0-9.10 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.17.0-9.10-generic 4.17.17 Uname: Linux 4.17.0-9-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.10-0ubuntu9 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: angela16196 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Fri Sep 7 22:08:12 2018 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-09-05 (1 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish" - Alpha amd64 (20180822) Lsusb: Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID 8087:0a2b Intel Corp. Public bug reported: Repro: 1. Press Fn+F3/F4 in fresh install from current Cosmic desktop image, fully updated -> Keyboard backlight should come on or change but doesn't. The gnome- shell icon for the keyboard backlight appears for both keys, but the icon's "progress" bar is not visible. Kernel version is linux-image-4.17.0-9-generic The keyboard backlight works perfectly when booting from the 18.04.1 desktop live image, Most other Fn+Fx special keys on this laptop work (display brightness, touchpad off, sound etc.) except for the airplane mode key. However the airplane mode key only fails in gnome-shell but works on the console (this is filed as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1791367) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.10 Package: linux-image-4.17.0-9-generic 4.17.0-9.10 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.17.0-9.10-generic 4.17.17 Uname: Linux 4.17.0-9-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.10-0ubuntu9 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: angela16196 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Fri Sep 7 22:08:12 2018 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-09-05 (1 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish" - Alpha amd64 (20180822) Lsusb: Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID 8087:0a2b Intel Corp.
