I can confirm @cmmrandau findings. mutter 45.0-3ubuntu 3 does not fix
the bug but Martin's workaround works for me.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1738534] Re: Processor turbo dsiabled/throttled after suspend

2021-07-04 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
I am still having this problem on a Dell XPS 9360 running Ubuntu 21.04.

Title:
  Processor turbo dsiabled/throttled after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  After suspending/resuming my laptop on battery power, I noticed choppy
  video playback. I've narrowed it down to the CPU being locked to
  lower frequencies after suspend/resume (only on battery). Plugging
  the laptop back in does not restore the normal performance, nor does
  suspend/resume after plugging it back in. The performance doesn't
  drop until after the suspend/resume, I'm not sure if it is _supposed_
  to throttle when on battery, but either way the behaviour is wrong.

  Doing a full shutdown and restart restores the performance to normal.

  Prior to a suspend/resume cycle, cpupower reports:

  $ sudo cpupower frequency-info
  analyzing CPU 0:
driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.00 GHz
available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 3.00 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 1.26 GHz (asserted by call to kernel)
boost state support:
  Supported: yes
  Active: yes
  2800 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
  2800 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
  2800 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
  3000 MHz max turbo 1 active cores

  Afterwards, the frequency is clamped (cpufreq-set -r --max=3.0GHz has
  no effect) and turbo is disabled:

  $ sudo cpupower frequency-info
  analyzing CPU 0:
driver: intel_pstate
CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
maximum transition latency: Cannot determine or is not supported.
hardware limits: 800 MHz - 3.00 GHz
available cpufreq governors: performance powersave
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 1.80 GHz.
The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency: Unable to call hardware
current CPU frequency: 950 MHz (asserted by call to kernel)
boost state support:
  Supported: no
  Active: no
  2800 MHz max turbo 4 active cores
  2800 MHz max turbo 3 active cores
  2800 MHz max turbo 2 active cores
  3000 MHz max turbo 1 active cores

  Trying to re-enable turbo mode by setting the no_turbo intel_pstate
  /sys/ entry back to 0 is rejected:

  $ echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo
  0
  tee: /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo: Operation not permitted

  However, these two commands *do* work around the problem, forcing
  turbo mode back on and then restoring the normal frequency range:

  sudo x86_energy_perf_policy --turbo-enable 1
  sudo cpufreq-set -r --min=0.8GHz --max=3.0GHz

  I also see this error in dmesg after some resumes (but the above
  problem sometimes happens without this error message):

  BIOS or unavailable on processor

Same problem and same solution as OP in a Dell XPS 9360 on Ubuntu 20.04.
It is a regression coming from 19.10.

Bug description:
  It seems that the Dell 9370 is set to go into s2idle mode rather than
  deep sleep, forgoing significant power savings.

  I have confirmed this by suspending and then checking:
  sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2. If the output is

  PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
  PM: suspend exit

  cat /sys/power/mem_sleep showed

  [s2idle] deep

  As a temporary fix, I typed
  echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
  as a root user (sudo -i).

  Then the output of cat /sys/power/mem_sleep was
  s2idle [deep]

  After suspending now,
  sudo journalctl | grep "PM: suspend" | tail -2 returns

  PM: suspend entry (deep)
  PM: suspend exit

  I have made this permanent by editing
  /etc/default/grub

  and replacing
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
  with
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep"

  then regenerating my grub configuration (sudo grub-mkconfig -o
  /boot/grub/grub.cfg).

  This appears to be working with no ill effects.

Thanks for the workaround @rasch, I'll try it.
One question, I don't have a "/lib/systemd/systemd-sleep/" folder. Maybe it is
"/lib/systemd/system-sleep/"?

Title:
  Missing wifi and bluetooth after sleep on XPS 9370

Status in Dell Sputnik:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have XPS9370 with self-installed Ubuntu 18.10 (not project sputnik) with
Killer 1435 wireless module.
  And sometimes I find wifi and bluetooth missing after sleep. I cannot exactly
define preconditions, but it seems there are following steps to reproduce the
issue
  1. Connect something via bluetooth (I use bluetooth headset)
  2. Send laptop to sleep
  3. Wake it and find wifi and bluetooth missing.

  I have to mention that I have also been experienced bluetooth only
  missing, but it somehow transformed to the issue with both wireless
  devices.

  Dmesg after waking up with the issue attached

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751098] Re: Ubuntu hangs shortly after booting with kernel 4.13.0-36

2018-02-27 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
I am sorry Joseph.

An update to my laptop's BIOS completely borked my Ubuntu 17.10
installation and I had to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 dev.

I don't think I can test the new kernel :/

I ended up updating to Ubuntu 18.04 dev. An update to the BIOS of my
laptop made it completely unstable to the point of not booting most of
the time. Ubuntu 18.04 seems to work fine so far.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1548587] Re: Ubuntu 15.10 VMWare guest won't show UI after upgrading to 4.2.0-30

2016-02-25 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
Hi.

I am having the same problem as amaguran on an HP Envy 14 (2010) after
upgrading to 4.2.0-30 on Ubuntu 14.04. The vivid branch of the kernel
works fine though.

  I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit as a guest VM in
  VMWare Workstation 12.1.0.

  After installation, I am able to log into the system. I then ran the
  updater application to install the latest updates.

  After installing the updates and restarting, the system no longer
  shows any UI after booting. I am now faced with a black screen and a
  dash that does not blink. The system also does not respond to any
  inputs.

  I was able to get back into my system by holding shift to show the
  GRUB menu and boot using the 4.2.16 kernel.

Title:
  PRIME dynamic GPU switching does not turn off the dedicated GPU until
  after a suspend-resume cycle

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have a HP Envy 14 laptop with a Intel Ironlake / AMD 5650m
  switchable graphics.

  It is correctly detected and configured as such using
  PRIME/runpm/vgaswitcheroo dynamic GPU switching and I can successfully
  use both GPUs. By default, the Integrated GPU is used to do OpenGL
  rendering and, if I use the DRI_PRIME=1 variable, the discrete GPU
  (dGPU) can be used as OpenGL renderer.

  The thing that is not working properly is that the discrete GPU is not
  automatically switched off when not in use. If I cat
  /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch I always obtain the following:

  0:DIS: :DynPwr::01:00.0
  1:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0
  2:DIS-Audio: :Pwr::01:00.1

  Meaning that the dGPU is on, but should be turned off when not in use,
  but it never happens despite the fact that the dGPU is not in use. As
  a result, battery life decreases and temperature and power consumption
  increases notably.

  What is weird, is that if the notebook goes through a suspend - resume
  cycle, PRIME starts to work as expected. After resuming, cat
  /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch returns:

  0:DIS: :DynOff::01:00.0
  1:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0
  2:DIS-Audio: :Off::01:00.1

  and only goes to DynPwr when I use the dGPU through DRI_PRIME=1. It
  goes back to DynOff after some seconds without dGPU usage. This
  solution only last until next reboot.

  Is there anything I can do in order to make PRIME switch off my dGPU
  automatically without going through a suspend-resume cycle?

/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch I always obtain the following:

0:DIS: :DynPwr::01:00.0
1:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0
2:DIS-Audio: :Pwr::01:00.1

Meaning that the dGPU is on, but should be turned off when not in use,
but it never happens despite the fact that the dGPU is not in use. As a
result, battery life decreases and temperature and power consumption
increases notably.

What is weird, is that if the notebook goes through a suspend - resume
cycle, PRIME starts to work as expected. After resuming, cat
/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch returns:

0:DIS: :DynOff::01:00.0
1:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0
2:DIS-Audio: :Off::01:00.1

and only goes to DynPwr when I use the dGPU through DRI_PRIME=1. It goes
back to DynOff after some seconds without dGPU usage. This solution
only last until next reboot.

Is there anything I can do in order to make PRIME switch off my dGPU
automatically without going through a suspend-resume cycle?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1163418] Re: Backlight is off when switching to discrete AMD GPU using vga_switcheroo and can't be turned on

2014-01-04 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
In my case, I am using Saucy exclusively in my laptop. So, I don't need
a backport. But, if this is a widespread problem, maybe is a good idea
for other people that may be suffering it in Precise (although, 14.04 is
getting closer).

I don't have a Precise installation anymore and, given that it is not
trivial to test this in a LiveCD, I am afraid I can't test the Saucy
enablement stack. Is there something else I can try?

Thanks you for your concern about this bug!

2014-01-03 Thread Nicolás Abel Carbone
Christopher, my notebook is HP ENVY 14-1095LA.

However, this bug is solved in kernels 3.11 and upwards, so it is no
longer present in Ubuntu 13.10. I don't know about the new kernels in
12.04LTS though. If someone can test it, maybe this bug should be
closed.
