[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1315073] Re: Fresh Ubuntu 64-bit install boots with no keyboard, mouse, or network
** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1315073 Title: Fresh Ubuntu 64-bit install boots with no keyboard, mouse, or network Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Hardware: Cyberpower Z77 computer, including the following relevant parts: Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z77-HD3 Intel Z77 Chipset Video Card: nVidia 760 Hard Drive: Samsung 128GB SSD, SATA3 Keyboard: Moshi Luna USB Mouse: Razer USB gaming mouse Try Ubuntu 14.04 without installing from USB key: No problems. Install Ubuntu while in LiveCD environment: No problems (even browsed the web a bit). On reboot, Ubuntu boots to LightDM, and that's as far as I can go. The keyboard doesn't respond, though I can successfully toggle F-Lock on and off and the lights are on. The mouse doesn't respond, and I see no cursor. There's a notification in the upper-right hand corner that there are no connected networks. I can't SSH in to get any logs. WORKAROUND: Boot from LiveUSB; mount and chroot into install; download and install Generic 3.14.1 MainLine kernel and reboot; everything is fine. But I don't think I have to tell anyone how not-ideal that is, especially since chrooting these days involves three or four mount --bind commands that are difficult for people to remember. This has occurred on Ubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome spins. This does not occur with Fedora 20 (the only other distro I've tried on this hardware). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1286590] Re: Installed version of linux_firmware is 1.79.9, but Software Updater is asking to install 1.79.11. What?
There is a version 1.79.9 of linux-firmware. It is the version that was originally included with Precise, and can be found here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/1.79.9. 1.79.10 is an update to 1.79.9, providing a few additional features and closing a few bugs (a full change log can be viewed here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/1.79.10). 1.79.10 is one version newer than 1.79.9, and is the version currently available for Precise. It's recommended that you update to 1.79.10 as it provides some important stability improvements. While 1.79.11 is listed as the latest upload, it isn't available yet. It's still being tested and worked on and can be found in the proposed repository. When it is fully tested and ready for release it will be moved to the Updates repo and will show up in the update manager as an available update. In summary, there isn't anything wrong with your computer, there is no security risk and no reason to think you've been hacked or anything of the like. I can see where the version numbers and listed upload dates can be a bit confusing, there isn't any way from looking at the version numbers to tell what repository the package is available in. The version of linux-firmware that came with Precise is 1.79.9, and the currently available one in Precise Updates is 1.79.10. 1.79.10 is a more recent version of linux-firmware than 1.79.9, and it is recommended that you do update to 1.79.10. The next update that will become available to you (after you update to 1.79.10) will be 1.79.11, which is currently being worked on. A package is first uploaded to proposed, so it can be tested by the community before being fully released. It helps flush out bugs before having it be adopted by all users. Packages uploaded to the Proposed repository are not available to users unless they enable the proposed repository. If you wish to enable the proposed repository (acknowledging the packages provided in proposed may be less stable than those provided in the other repositories), there are instructions here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed. I hope this has helped address your concerns, as this isn't a bug I'm going to set this to invalid. Feel free to contact me through Launchpad if you have any other questions or concerns about this or any other issue. ~Quinn Balazs ** Changed in: linux-firmware (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-firmware in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286590 Title: Installed version of linux_firmware is 1.79.9, but Software Updater is asking to install 1.79.11. What? Status in “linux-firmware” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Please if you can help. My Software Updater is asking me to revert to a lower number for this package (linux-firmware to 1.79.11) than the currently installed version (1.79.9). However, there is no trace of a 1.79.9 in the repository. This is such a critical security file that it has caught my attention. How is this possible? Has my system been hacked or something? I assume this is a bug, smells like a bug, it's highly illogical, etc. Does anyone know anything about this? The package is linux_firmware And my release is: 12.04.4 Precise kernal - 3.11.0-17-generic #31~precise1 Curiously, 2 weeks ago I did a complete system rebuild with a fresh ISO of Precise 12.04 LTS, so this would probably have come directly from that recently downloaded ISO/DVD image. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1272959] Re: USB devices stop working
Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example: kernel-fixed-upstream-3.13 This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Having used Ubuntu 12.04 for several years, I recently purchased a new laptop, an Acer Aspire E1-531, and the screen brightness control doesn't work - with 12.04 or 13.10. When the slider is moved back and forth there is no change - the screen remains on full brightness. Several helpful suggestions to fix this have been provided via Launchpad, but none were successful - hence listing the problem as a bug. My daughter has my previous Dell laptop running 12.04 and the brightness works perfectly. Ditto my Asus netbook. But NOT on my Aspire. Having Googled the problem in search of a solution, I find many people with the same problem with other machines. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1257058] Re: low graphics mode boot error
To edit your original post, click the little yellow exclamation point above the bug description. To edit the package you have to type a package name into the choose field, and click the small magnifying glass to get a list of all possible packages that include that term. Generally this issue is caused by a combination of a kernel update and your graphics drivers. We'll file this against the linux package for the time being. Please run apport-collect 1257085 which will gather a bunch of logs and post them attached to this report so that we can get a better idea of what's going on here. ** Package changed: ubuntu = linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1257058 Title: low graphics mode boot error Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit with Gnome fallback System starts with message the system is running in low graphics mode, the desktop does not come up, and the system is locked from all further entries. Problem discussed in http://askubuntu.com/questions/141606/how-to-fix-the-system-is- running-in-low-graphics-mode-error with several possible solutions. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1256134] Re: Image appears cropped (underscan/overscan) on external HDTV display

When I plug in my Dell laptop (Inspiron N4010) with its integrated Intel graphics, I am unable to get the image to display correctly -- it appears cropped, with several percent of the top, bottom, left, and right missing -- I can't see the left-hand launch bar or the top menu bar on the screen. This HDTV displays correctly under Windows. I haven't been able to find any underscan/overscan setting for the display driver, either through xrandr or the Gnome display settings screen. This is something that should more or less just work. I have fought this problem periodically since I bought the laptop in 2010, but the situation has stayed about the same each time I have tried. This appears to be a fairly long-standing issue, and from my searching around, I suspect there may be a common root cause among Intel, nVidia, and ATI graphics devices. lsb_release -rd: Description: Ubuntu 13.04 Release: 13.04 /proc/version_signature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-33.48-generic 3.8.13.11 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1256134/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1248958] Re: Keyboard Touch Cover 2 not working on Surface Pro 2
I think the issue here is in interpreting the data given by the keyboard. In your kernel log, there should be a line something like this hid-multitouch 0003:045E:07A9.. with a hidraw number after it. If you run # cat /dev/hidraw#, you should see that the keyboard is indeed spewing data, it just isn't being read correctly. The Microsoft SAM device that X registers appears to be the windows key capacitive button, not the keyboard at all. If you get a chance, check that out, and let us know if there is info produced by the keyboard. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1211207] Re: Keyboard and Mouse stop working after undefined time
Andrea, Thank you for trying to keep this issue consolidated to one report, but with many bugs (kernel issues especially) exact system configuration matters a tremendous amount. With this issue, even if the symptoms are the same, the root cause of the problem may be different. See comment #3 for the logs that would need to be collected, and under what circumstances they will need to be collected. I'd rather treat your issue as a different problem altogether, rather than lumping it in here. So, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to ask you to open a new bug against the linux package, subscribe me (qbalazs) to the report. Once you've done that, I'll post the instructions for gathering the needed logs. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1243758] Re: keyboard and mouse stop working after some time
Alright, so here are the commands needed in order to collect necessary log files. Run the following commands one at a time in a terminal window. Just pasting them from here into it should work fine. lsusb -v ~/lsusb-v uname -a ~/uname-a cat /proc/version_signature ~/version_signature sudo lspci -vvnn ~/lspci-vvnn (This one will ask for an admin password as it uses sudo) And attach the following output logs to the bug report. All these should be found by navigating to the root filesystem, but these are the paths for them. ~/lsusb-v, ~/uname-a, ~/version_signature and ~/lspci-vvnn For the following logs, please wait until the issue occurs, and ssh into the affected system in order to collect the following logs LANG=C dmesg ~/dmesg diff -ns ~/dmesg_boot ~/dmesg ~/dmesg_diff cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/Xorg.0.log_tmp diff -ns ~/Xorg.0.log ~/Xorg.0.log_tmp ~/Xorg.0.log_diff This has to be done when the primary keyboard isn't working so that dmesg and Xorg can collect information about what went wrong with it. After finishing those commands, attach the following log files to the report, again, here are the paths for them: ~/dmesg_boot, ~/dmesg_diff, ~/Xorg.0.log and ~/Xorg.0.log_diff. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1243758 Title: keyboard and mouse stop working after some time Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Similar to bug #1211207 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1211207 ) , mouse and keyboard stop working after undefined time, and start working again after suspend or reboot (via ssh or button) Initially i supposed to be related to gspca webcam issue (URB error -71, resubmitting in 'dmesg'),that it's near to the suspend entries in the log but also detaching that from usb the issue happen The log attached include from the system start until various mouse and keyboard freeze, and the various suspend/resume to workaround the problem --- ApportVersion: 2.12.5-0ubuntu2 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: andrew 5084 F pulseaudio DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.10 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=05cad5e7-fc85-4575-97fa-577a8d9b106d InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-12-04 (323 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Precise Pangolin - Release amd64 (20120823.1) IwConfig: irda0 no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. lono wireless extensions. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1211207] Re: Keyboard and Mouse stop working after undefined time
This needs to be tested/retested with an upstream mainline kernel build. Please see here http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D for upstream builds and here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds for instructions on installing them. Test this with 3.11.6-saucy in order to figure out if this is fixed upstream. If you have the time and patience it would be nice to also know where this issue first crops up. That would entail testing -saucy kernel builds (no rc) from the present back until about July 29th. Once you have at least tested the Oct 18th 3.11.6-saucy build, please set the status here back to confirmed, and replace the tag needs-upstream-testing to either kernel-fixed-upstream if the issue is fixed in 3.11.6-saucy, or kernel-exists-upstream. My hunch here is the issue exists upstream, which is why changes here haven't impacted the problem at all. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1218547] Re: Clevo W350ST brightness keys don't work on Kubuntu
Thanks for testing those. Since using what was basically the latest upstream kernel didn't help, it sounds like this is something that needs to be addressed upstream. That doesn't mean that we'll stop trying to find a temp solution, just that a fix may originate quicker from upstream. If you would, please open an upstream bug report at https://bugzilla.kernel.org. This will point out your issue to the developers, and may provide a resolution more quickly. If you feel comfortable opening a bug upstream, it would be helpful if you would post the upstream bug number as a comment here, so that we can link this to the appropriate upstream report. While you are doing that, I'm going to finish looking over the provided logs and should have a few other things that we can try out a bit later today. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1218547] Re: Clevo W350ST brightness keys don't work on Kubuntu
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Test the 3.9rc8 kernel, not one in the daily directory. Once you have done this, remove the tag needs-upstream-testing. If this issue exists in the mainline kernel add the tag kernel-bug-exists-upstream and if it is fixed, add the tag kernel-bug-fixed-upstream. If you are simply unable to test the upstream kernel for any reason add the tag kernel-unable-to-test- upsream. After testing the upstream kernel set the status of this bug back to confirmed. After figuring out if this exists upstream, we will know better where to focus our attempts to get this figured out. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1218547] Re: Clevo W350ST brightness keys don't work on Kubuntu
For our purposes, the rc builds should be ignored. Let's test this with v3.8.13.11-raring and v3.11.5-saucy. This should give us a pretty good picture of where (if anywhere) this issue exists upstream. v3.8.13.11-raring is from today, and v3.11.5-saucy is from yesterday. Sorry about the confusion, it took me a bit to figure out what would be best in this case. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1218547] Re: Clevo W350ST brightness keys don't work on Kubuntu
Looking back at your last comment, this sounds like the core of the issue is that there are two interfaces present that are trying to control brightness. Could you try booting with the kernel boot parameter of acpi_backlight=vendor which should disable acpi_video0 leaving intel_backlight. Does this improve the issue, or cause additional problems? Also, now that I've set a package please run apport-collect bug# so that any logs that may be relevant get attached here. If acpi_backlight=vendor either doesn't help, or causes weird flickery issues, there are a few other ways to try to cut the number of interfaces down to one. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219599] Re: Booting fails with AsRock X79 Extreme6 motherboard and ASUS PCE-N10 wireless n PCIe adaptor.
This report is missing several logs required by the Kernel Team. If you didn't file your Ubuntu kernel bug using ubuntu-bug, please run the following at a terminal, which will automatically gather and attach the requested system information to the bug report: apport-collect -p linux bug# As a last resort, at a minimum, your bug report should contain the output of the following commands: uname -a uname-a.log cat /proc/version_signature version.log dmesg dmesg.log sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log These four files should be attached separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar and zipped). Please note that dmesg output should be captured as early as possible after bootup to avoid extraneous output. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1219599 Title: Booting fails with AsRock X79 Extreme6 motherboard and ASUS PCE-N10 wireless n PCIe adaptor. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215371] Re: [Kernel-Oops] Kernel NULL pointer dereference at interrupt when doing Centrino clock stuff (drm_kms_helper)
Additional logs cannot be captured as the panic is triggered on boot. As is stated in the title from the stack trace it seems that the issue stems from an issue with clock scheduling. RIP points to handle_cmd_completion+0x25c/0xba0, cmd, being a python script. And the kernel is tainted, with PID reading GF I. With all modules running under GPL, one or more modules having been force loaded using insmod -f, and lastly that there was a severe bug in the firmware (either BIOS or other). Just wanted to put a bit more out to attempt to come close to the kernel team's policies.
