[Kernel-packages] [Bug 839019] Re: bringing up 10ec:8185 wifi module freezes the system

2019-10-04 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I do not use the respective hardware any longer, but it still exists.
Going to test it if I find the time. Thanks.

Title:
  bringing up 10ec:8185 wifi module freezes the system

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  When 10ec:8185 module is modprobed this causes a complete freeze of
  the system.

  This issue is severe for two reasons:
  * My computer is unable to connect to the network via wifi through a native
linux driver;
  * because 10ec:8185 is modprobed at startup, the liveCD will show a black
screen without any error message.

  Affected Ubuntu releases: Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Natty, Oneiric,
  Precise beta 1

  Workarounds:
  * ndiswrapper:
  * works on Intrepid and Natty but not on Jaunty

  File received with "bluetooth file transfer" cannot be saved

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Receiving files with "bluetooth file transfer" works fine -- but just that.
The files received appear in the lower part of the app window, but you cannot
save them anywhere! Swiping to the right only shows the trash can symbol, so
literally the only thing I can do with the received files is delete them! You
can't even save them to the "Downloads" folder. What good is a file transfer
tool, if the received file cannot be used any further?
  I am quite puzzled -- or am I missing something essential?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1118447] Re: Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

2017-10-03 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Hi Christian,
thanks for the suggestion, but we did not use names for NFS mounts but IPs (see
fstab in #10).

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel

Title:
  Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in nfs-utils package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I seem to experience a race condition during boot of my ubuntu 12.04 server:
In approx. one of seven boots, the server hangs during bootup.
  This is what I see on the screen:

  After the line

   * Starting configure network device

  there is a short delay of about 1 second, then messages continue. I
  see

   * Starting Mount network filesystems [ OK ]
   * Starting set sysctls from /etc/sysctl.conf [ OK ]
   * Starting configure network device [ OK ]
   * Stopping Mount network filesystems [ OK ]
   * Stopping set sysctls from /etc/sysctl.conf [ OK ]
   * Starting Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]
   * Stopping Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]
   * Starting Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]
   * Stopping Block the mounting event for NFS filesytems until statd is
running [ OK ]

  The last messages repeats several times, and then the boot process hangs.
  In 6/7 of cases, I wait for a minute, and after that bootup continues.

  But in approx 1/7 cases, the system hangs at this point forever. The
  machine does not respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL, I have to reboot it using
  SysRq-Keys.

  WORKAROUND: Setting the NFS entries in fstab to "noauto" completely removes
the problem:
  There is no timeout during boot, and no lockup any more. The machine boote
smoothly with the NFS-shares unmounted. After the machine is up, we can
manually mount the NFS-shares without a problem.

  Touchpad resolution too coarse on thinkpad X230

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The thinkpad X230 tablet has three HID for controlling the pointer: mouse,
touch screen and touch pad.
  With mouse and touch screen as inpt devices, I have pixel-exact control of
the pointer.

  In contrast, when using the touch pad as the input device, resolution
  is very coarse: the pointer jumps in small steps of approx. 5 pixels.
  This resolution is too coarse, e.g. for controlling graphical user
  interfaces with small buttons. Very often, when I tap on the touch pad
  for emulating a left click, the pointer jumps 5 pixels from where it
  was, causing me to actually click on a different button. (This can be
  quite annoying. Example: I regularly hit "suspend" instead of "log
  out" in the system menu).

  Can the pointer resolution be changed for the touch pad? If so, it
  should default to pixel-exact resolution.

It's worth a lot. We can use this workaround until the bug has been

2016-06-02 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Confirming problem exactly as described in original description. Freezes are
frequently triggered by video playback in browsers, but also in normal browser
use. Chrome and other browsers using the Blink rendering engine (like Opera)
trigger freezes much more often than firefox. But regularly I can trigger a
freeze even in Firefox by showing a video on youtube in fullscreen mode for in
than 15 minutes.
We provide Ubuntu for 700+ users at a school and cannot switch from 14.04 to
16.04 while this problem persists. It was already present in the last updates
to 14.04 we made around march 2016, if this helps.
Appreciating your effort on solving this bug!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1546282] Re: No way of selecting layout of bluetooth keyboard

Bug description:
  What happens:
  Having connected a bluetooth keyboard to Ubuntu phone, it is locked to
American layout. There is no option of changing the layout.

  What should happen:
  The user should be able to select the layout of her bluetooth keyboard. The
layout should default to the option the device reports (e.g. German for a
qwertz-keyboard).

  Today I connected a bluetooth keyboard to my Ubuntu phone (Meizu MX4,
  OTA 9). Pairing worked flawlessly, the keyboard was usable right away.
  But there is no way to select the correct layout. Ubuntu phone applies
  American (qwerty) layout, but this is wrong. My bluetooth keyboard has
  German layout (qwertz). While I can easily switch layouts for the
  screen keyboard, I cannot do so for the bluetooth keyboard. It is
  fixed to American. This renders my keyboard next to useless.

  The user should be able to configure keyboard layout for bluetooth
  devices just like for the screen keyboard.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1176857] Re: Touchpad resolution too coarse on thinkpad X230

2015-08-20 Thread Rüdiger Kupper

instant showstopper for every Ubuntu user with a Thinkpad X230(t). And it is
two years old.
Time to fix?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1176857] Re: Touchpad resolution too coarse on thinkpad X230

2015-01-28 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Christopher,
the commands you suggest do not influence touchpad behaviour in any way.

Title:
  Touchpad resolution too coarse on thinkpad X230

Status in One Hundred Papercuts:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 830267] Re: Hibernation fails with "not enough free memory" error

2014-12-05 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I do not use hibernation any longer. It used to fail often and is disabled by
default in recent Ubuntu versions.
Please could someone using hibernation with a recent Ubuntu comment on this
(Peter? You seem to use it with 14.04)?

Title:
  Hibernation fails with "not enough free memory" error

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Recently, hibernation on my Thinkpad T61 fails now and again. All goes as
usual, with HD-activity clearly indicating that the image is written to the
disk. But then the process suddenly stops, and the screen displays:
   PM: not enough free memory
   PM:error -12 creating hibernation image
  The computer needs to be forcedly powered off from this state, and boots up
without restoring the next time.

  My concern is not so much that hibernation fails, but that it leaves
  the user with no option of recovering from this state. I.e., if
  hibernation is not possible for whatever reason, I may want to save my
  work, exit my programs regularly, and shut down the computer. As
  things are, I have no chance: my session is simply lost.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1118447] Re: Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

2014-01-04 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Christopher, thank you for your comment on the outdated BIOS version. I
completely see your point about good quality of bug reports.
It may be some time until I can update our BIOSes, however. These are LTSP
servers powering a whole school with 700 every-day users, it's elementary they
are stable. For us being teachers by our main profession, it's a tough job
running a network, since our superior authorities grant us almost no time for
doing it. It's like you have a full-time job that keeps you busy 120% of your
time and you are asked to run the company network in your free time -- with
full responsibility.
I heavily rely on sources like launchpad for doing that job, but I simply
cannot always be in time with running tests on that system. Still, I want to
give back a little by writing bug reports and helping to resolve bugs where I
can.

I will certainly find opportunity to upgrade our BIOSes sooner or later,
but as others confirm the bug, I would not want to let this block the
bug resolution process. Thanks to all for your help and effort!

Title:
  Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “nfs-utils” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I seem to experience a race condition during boot of my ubuntu 12.04 server:
In approx. one of seven boots, the server hangs during bootup.
  This is what I see on the screen:

  After the line

   * Starting configure network device

  there is a short delay of about 1 second, then messages continue. I
  see

   * Starting Mount network filesystems [ OK ]
   * Starting set sysctls from /etc/sysctl.conf [ OK ]
   * Starting configure network device [ OK ]
   * Stopping Mount network filesystems [ OK ]
   * Stopping set sysctls from /etc/sysctl.conf [ OK ]

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 900795] Re: Intel driver reports hung GPU und disables acceleration

2013-11-25 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Christopher,
my original bug report was with the oneiric version of Ubuntu. Since then,
things have much approved with intel i915 graphics. They are, how ever, far
from good, even with the saucy release.

This is the network for a German school with approx. 700 users. We have
eight LTSP servers and all identical clients. Those clients are Pentium
IV machines with onboard intel graphics. They *all* suffer from the
intel graphics problems, which persist since I began my duty at this
school, which was with the jaunty release. Since then, intel graphics
have *never* worked, and they continue not to work until today (since
4,5 years!): Intel graphics on Ubuntu with remote X is a constant
source of concern.

To clarify my setting: I run Edubuntu 13.10 on a number of LTSP clients. This
means *the X client is remote* -- a thing that X was explicitly designed for.
Actually this is the only reason that there is X: Running low-power terminals
on a high-power server.
This should work like hell. But: It doesn't. Not at all.

- There is no hardware acceleration with my Intel clients with remote X
- graphics lock up at unpredictable times
- graphics reproducibly fail on certain applications
- I cannot even log in with Unity or the gnome-flashback-compiz session

In short: remote X does not work with intel clients in any other mode
but VGA mode. This mode makes my P-IV-clients react and look like
rubbish. And that's about the impression that my students get from
Ubuntu at my school. Sorry for telling you the truth: Ubuntu makes for a
very bad experience on distributed, older hardware. When I began my
career, I learned that this was Linux's original domain: low-power
hardware in distributed networks. Looks this is no longer true.

I will go and test the current release and current kernel and help
wherever I can. However, I cannot understand how a chipset that is
around for many years now and built onto a relevant number of mainboards
is still not working in Ubuntu -- the distribution that prides itself in
supporting the most hardware.

  Intel driver reports hung GPU und disables acceleration

Bug description:
  Hardware info: product: 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated

  I get no 3d acceleration with the intel driver. Cheking the logs I see that
the driver reproducibly reports a hung GPU and disables acceleration.
  The log file asks me to get the output of dmes and the debugfs error_state
file, which I attach below.
  This is not a random lockup, which is often reported, but it happens *every
time*.

  In addition, I randomly experience X freezes, even with acceleration
  disabled.

  AMILO Pro V2030 fan control only working after suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I see strange behavior of fan control on a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro V2030
laptop, running Lubuntu 12.10:
  I boot, and the cooling fan runs at high speed and never slows down. However,
when I hibernate, the fan suddenly slows down shortly before the laptop turns
off. After resume, fan control works perfectly: Fan changes speed and turns on
and of depending on temperature.
  Somehow, hibernation *fixes* fan control. This is in contrast to other
reports, which mostly report that fan control breaks after hibernation.
  I tried to find the place where the magic happens, reading through the
pm-action script. Finally, I found that it must happen in the kernel, as simply
doing
  # echo -n disk > /sys/power/state
  is enough to trigger the effect.

  So: what is it in the hibernation process that fixes fan control on
  the AMILO Pro V2030?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1153106] Re: AMILO Pro V2030 fan control only working after suspend

2013-11-05 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Christopher,

thank you very much! I'd really like to test the BIOS upgrade! However,
silly as it sounds, the AMILO Pro laptop in question completely broke
down three days ago. It will not power on any more. (It is not the
battery, it does not power on with battery removed, either. Probably a
hardware failure in the mainboard's power supply. I know of other AMILOs
that suffered this failure.)

When I have the time I will see if I can fix the power supply. If I manage, I
will certainly come to you. Until then, we're out of luck :-(.
However, since I seem to have been the only one with interest in this problem
(no one else subscribed to this bug), there may be no need to further pursue
the issue.

I'm a little sad that a machine that served me well for 10 years or more
has simply broken. I appreciate your help very much! But unless I manage
to fix my AMILO, this ticket may be closed.

My regards,
Rüdiger

Title:
  AMILO Pro V2030 fan control only working after suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Status in “linux” package in Fedora:

Bug description:
  When 10ec:8185 module is modprobed this causes a complete freeze of
  the system.

  This issue is severe for two reasons:
  * My computer is unable to connect to the network via wifi through a native
linux driver;
  * because 10ec:8185 is modprobed at startup, the liveCD will show a black
screen without any error message.

  Affected Ubuntu releases: Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Natty, Oneiric,
  Precise beta 1

  Workarounds:
  * ndiswrapper:
  * works on Intrepid and Natty but not on Jaunty

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1098216] Re: Regression in brightness control on Lenovo Thinkpad X230 (+tablet) and X1 Carbon

2013-07-17 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
On my Thinkpad X230, the problem was present in May 2013 but now is gone
(3.8.0-25-generic). I cannot tell which kernel update brought the fix.

Title:
  Regression in brightness control on Lenovo Thinkpad X230 (+tablet) and
  X1 Carbon

Status in The Linux Kernel:
  In Progress
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in “linux” package in Fedora:
  Unknown

Bug description:
  == Raring SRU Justification ==

  Impact: A number of ThinkPad models have a workaround in the ACPI
  backlight implementation for Windows 8 that more or less completely
  breaks backlight control.

  Fix: Add an OSI quirk to no longer claim to be Windows 8 on these
  machines, causing the firmware to revert to the older, working behavior.

  Test Case: Verified on LP #1098216 and bugzill.kernel.org #51231.

  ---

  Something changed between the 3.5 and the 3.7 kernel, leading to
  broken brightness control on my Thinkpad x230.

  Here are some test results:
  == 3.5.0-21-generic ==
  === Post-boot values ===
  /sys/class/backlight:
    - intel-backlight
  + actual_brightness => 4438
  + bl_power => 0
  + brightness => 4438
  + max_brightness => 4438
    - acpi_video0
  + actual_brightness => 15
  + bl_power => 0
  + brightness => 15
  + max_brightness => 15

  === Tests ===
  echo 0 > acpi_video0/brightness => works
  echo 0 > intel_backlight/brightness => works

  == 3.8.0-0-generic ==
  === Post-boot values ===
  /sys/class/backlight:
    - intel-backlight
  + actual_brightness => 4438
  + bl_power => 0
  + brightness => 4438
  + max_brightness => 4438
    - acpi_video0
  + actual_brightness => 100
  + bl_power => 0
  + brightness => 100
  + max_brightness => 100

  === Tests ===
  echo 0 > acpi_video0/brightness => doesn't do anything
  echo 0 > intel_backlight/brightness => works

  WORKAROUND:

  Add to /etc/default/grub
  in the variable "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT":

  acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\"

  e.g:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\""

  Then run "sudo update-grub".
