[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
Note to self: * I was too optimistic during bisection. the bug is spurious and just taking the laptop on/off the grid and closing the lid a couple of times is not enough testing to provoke it. Trigger requires more interaction with laptop such as the type of interaction that is natural when on the road. Walked back the bisection tree to the last known bad compile and started testing again. * Prior to starting testing my latest bisection, tested v3.19rc1. Bug was triggered three days into the test. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
OK, I tried hard to trigger the bug and it does not. At the risk of cutting things short, I try the following: git bisect good 5e01dc7b26d9f24f39abace5da98ccbd6a5ceb52 output: Bisecting: 12903 revisions left to test after this (roughly 14 steps) [8cf126d92791381632818df862fdbc89ab6f7572] Merge branch 'x86-urgent-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip 14 steps. That means that if I keep my usage pattern of the past seven weeks, it can take up to 28 weeks to nail down the specific commit that (re)introduced the bug I am experiencing. The bug triggers after a combination of lid close/open and connecting/disconnecting power, so I will be artificially increasing the number of such events in an attempts to precipitate the bug faster. next: make -j `getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN` deb-pkg LOCALVERSION=-custom cd .. mkdir second mv *.deb second/ cd second sudo dpkg -i linux-* it is building now -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: In Progress Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
I have set up to do the bisection. I am not sure if what I have done is right, so here it is, comments are welcome. Requirements: * about 12 GB of free disk space * 3-4 hours (YMMV depending on internet connection speed and processing power) Dependencies: * Some were already present on the machine and the others I worked myself with apt-get every time the process broke, based on the error messages. Next time I shall start from a clean slate install and document exactly what dependencies I have installed. Initial Setup: mkdir -p ~/src/kernel cd ~/src/kernel git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-stable git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/kteam-tools.git kteam-tools cd linux-stable git remote add trusty git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-trusty.git git config user.email m...@email.here git config user.name me git checkout -b mybisect origin/master git bisect start git bisect good v3.12.30 git bisect bad v3.14-rc4 output of the last command: Bisecting: a merge base must be tested [5e01dc7b26d9f24f39abace5da98ccbd6a5ceb52] Linux 3.12 build and install first bisection: cp /boot/config-`uname -r` .config make oldconfig make clean make -j `getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN` deb-pkg LOCALVERSION=-custom cd .. mkdir first mv *.dpkg first/ cd first sudo dpkg -i linux-* now I have rebooted into this first interaction kernel and the challenge is to reproduce the bug. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
I actually went back to v3.12.30-trusty -- the most recent in the 3.12 line, because I remembered that 14.04, when the problems started, installed v3.13.something. I no longer have record of what was the last working kernel under 13.10, but I remember 3.11 is the first one that did work with this laptop. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. On 14-10-18 10:49 AM, Christopher M. Penalver wrote: Yuv, if the problem is reproducible on the latest mainline kernel available (now 3.17.1) Why did you mark the bug as incomplete? I know 3.17.1 is the latest mainline kernel now available. When it was published I could not install it without interrupting the testing of 3.17-rc7. I have not found a way to trigger the bug in less than 10 days uptime, which means that inevitably a newer mainline kernel is released in the meantime, so if the latest mainline kernel available is a mandatory condition for completeness, this bug report will never get completed, which I doubt is a desirable state of affairs. the next step would be to fully commit bisect the kernel in order to identify the offending commit following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection . OK, I understand the concept of commit bisecting and while I never built the Linux kernel from source, I did the FreeBSD kernel a few years ago and I think it is just a matter of time and disk space. I am willing to try that, but need a specific pointer: I understand that I need two starting points: the last working kernel version and the latest possible tip of the git repo. Problem is: the last working kernel version I know of was the one in Ubuntu 13.10. Can you help me map that to a specific git revision? I unplugged and went to an external location. Opened the lid, some light LibreOffice work. Skype and email client running in the background. After about 15 minutes, I closed the lid and stowed the laptop away in its sleeve and in my backpack. A few hours later I take it out of the backpack and it is running hot with the fan at highest speed. Did not suspend, and the bug is here. The laptop is still somehow responsive, but it did not save my work (small loss, I did not bother to save knowing that there is a risk). Let me know if there is any diagnostic commands you want me to run. Then I will reboot, install mainline 3.17.1 that was published two days ago, and start the whole cycle again. ** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.17-rc4 ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.17-rc7 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
the bug is alive and well. For the past two weeks I have not been using the laptop but I have left it on, sporadically opening and closing the lid, connecting and disconnecting the power adapter and doing some light web surfing / text editing. then last Tuesday I used it to help a friend get a sense for different screen sizes and connected it via HDMI to a 47 TV to let him compare it to the laptop's own 13 display. Closed the lid and let the laptop sleep. Today I open the lid. The screen is blank. There is no visible reaction to pressing the power button. I plug the HDMI cable and the screen comes back up. The mouse does not work, but with keyboard-only (and a lot of patience) I copy the output of dmesg from a terminal and paste it below, hoping that it is helpful to identify the issue. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
Thank you for the quick reply, Christopher. The report in comment #5 was against ustream 3.17-rc4, so I will add the tag kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.17-rc4. RC4 was the latest available upstream kernel at the time of rebooting the laptop, and it has not been rebooted since. With my current usage patter the bug seems to need some time to manifest itself and kernel development moves on in the meantime. I had difficulties making sense of the instructions the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder). In the context of comment #6 I had the impression they related to the Wiki page and it took me a while to figure out that they relate to the downloads listings at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D. For future triage interactions, I would suggest referring directly to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D. 3.17-rc7 is now installed on the laptop, and it is, once again, left running (mostly sleeping) continuously. ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.17-rc4 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
I just started testing 3.17-rc7. It will take a couple of weeks to tell if this bug is reproducible or not. A symptom that is consistently reproducible is that hibernation does not work, however I am not sure it is related and the system does not let me file a bug report, saying that It appears you are currently running a mainline kernel. It would be better to report this bug upstream at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/ so that the upstream kernel developers are aware of the issue. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
On 14-10-04 07:25 PM, Christopher M. Penalver wrote: hibernate, this is treated as a separate issue That's what I suspected. Hibernation is a very minor issue compared to the system melt downs and data loss that I have experienced with the issue reported in this ticket. I will not file a hibernation bug until this issue is fixed. I'd rather focus on solving this issue, that was not present in 'buntu 13.10. My luck is that at the moment I am not as critically reliant on this laptop as I was until four months ago, but if I have to rely on it for serious work again, the options are very limited at this point and do not include 'buntu because it has to be a known-to-work kernel 3.13, or a different O/S altogether. Both scenarios are not particularly attractive. So my hope is for this bug to be fixed before I need the laptop again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1368908] Re: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure
Christopher, thank you for the helpul directions. I was not aware of the BIOS update. I updated the BIOS, and I also updated https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate (the path to the EFI partition was wrong in the initial considerations section, and I added the SONY experience). sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date R1044V7 03/24/2014 I will observe if anything has changed and report back. It sometimes take days for the bug to crash the system, depending very much on my usage pattern. I have been living with this bug for about a month. I have tested it (with the old BIOS) against mainline kernels http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D. With all v3.17 release candidates up until rc4, the bug was still there, even though my impression is that it triggers less often. Before updating the BIOS today the system had been running with kernel 3.16.2 for four days and had not been tripped (although I am not using the laptop very much these days, so most of the time it was just idling with the mail client running or suspended . Now the system is rebooted with the new BIOS into kernel 3.17-rc4. Thank you again for your help. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368908 Title: [Sony VAIO SVP13215CDB] suspend/resume failure Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: System worked well with Xubuntu 13.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1367064] Re: [MSI A88XM-E45][A4-5300] 'buntu 14.04.1 constant reboot without nomodeset
Short answer: sorry, Christopher, I cannot bissect on this machine. I have a couple of other machines that are misbehaving after the 14.04 upgrade and I will probably file a report against them, with the extra steps. Longer answer: This is a production critical machine (family storage). When I did the upgrade, I took a necessary risk, exported (ZFS) all the storage pools, carefully disconnected all hard drives in the pool from the machine, imported a non-critical pool into a working 14.04 machine and made sure 14.04 can mount the pool and access the datasets. Then I went about installing and diagnosing 14.04 on this machine. After determining that the NOMODESET workaround works, I reconnected all hard drives, reimported all pools, and closed the box. I will not reopen the box until the next scheduled hard disks replacement or until an accident happens. I made a note in the server's logbook, so in case I reopen the box I will make sure I have a spare harddrive and some time to test. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1367064 Title: [MSI A88XM-E45][A4-5300] 'buntu 14.04.1 constant reboot without nomodeset Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Machine was happy with Xubuntu 13.10, but the software has been discontinued and I was forced to upgrade. Any further attempts in installing it resulted in the same bug. As soon as I open the Ubuntu installer application and click Continue button then the system restarts after 2-3 seconds. I asked the same on AskUbuntu and some more guys reported the same problem with AMD APU, so I believe it to be a genuine bug and not just with me. The BIOS version is the latest one downloaded from MSI official website which is version 11.5. Also an Interesting thing is that this bug is common with the latest iso of Arch Linux too, but when booting older distros like Linux Mint 16 from USB, then everything works like it should, so it might have something to do with the newer 3.13 Kernel version. I am not an expert, but I can surely tell that only the newer distros are affected by this bug as reported by some other guys at AskUbuntu and the fact that Arch which is running the newer Kernel is having the same bug, so it probably has something to do with the newer Kernel, but I could be wrong. This bug is not letting me install Ubuntu 14.04 on my hardware and it is affecting a few more users too. Here is the AskUbuntu thread : http://askubuntu.com/questions/449391/unable-to-install-ubuntu-14-04 -pc-restarts-after-i-click-continue-button-in I hope this gets fixed soon or with the 14.04.1 upcoming July release. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294087] Re: [LENOVO 20266] hibernate/resume failure
Has an upstream bug report been filed? The exact same issue affects a SONY Vaio Pro 13 (Haswell ULV CPU). Which one is the latest trusty mainline kernel? sorted by last modified date, it seems to be [0] from less than ten days ago, but sorted by version number it seems to be [1] from four months ago. Also quite confusing is that by both version number and date, there are far newer utopic kernels. I can't test utopic on this laptop at this point. I would expect that those mainline kernels builds are automated, in which case is there a reason for them not being made available for the latest LTS Ubuntu release? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1227093] Re: [haswell sony vaio pro] Internal microphone not working
OK, I am back home and can test a bit more. Unfortunately my other headsets are all 2.5mm and do not fit into the SONY Vaio Pro's 3.5mm jack. Nevertheless, I am pretty confident that the headset I tested with is fully functional because it works with both the SONY Vaio Pro (when booted to Windows) and with my cellphone. Maybe something is misconfigured on my end, which I could find out with a live USB key. I am waiting for the SRU (Stable Release Update?). I have tried removing the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.1_all.deb package from my system today but it resulted in no microphone at all and I reinstalled it. I would like to know more details about the headset that worked for Toufik (comment #28). Mine is an old Nokia headset. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1227093] Re: [PATCH 2/2] ALSA: hda - Fix microphone for Sony VAIO Pro 13 (Haswell model)
On 10/10/2013 09:26 AM, David Henningsson wrote: The problem here is somewhat lack of testers. We have only one person with a headset (with alias Yuv) and that person reports that it does not work. However, the problem might be with that person's headset so I probably don't want to completely disable it, just remove its jack detection. Especially as this would go to stable too. I doubt that the problem is with my headset because its mic works in Windows. If you can wait three weeks, I will be going home for a week after exams and I have a couple of other headsets there to test. Expected behaviour: - When there is nothing plugged in, speakers and internal mic should work. PERFECT! - Whenever something (headphone or headset) is plugged in, output should switch to headphones and automute the speakers, but you have to manually select internal mic or headset mic in Gnome's sound preferences (or pavucontrol). headphone: works as expected. headset: I see the option to select Headset Microphone in pavucontrol, however selecting headset microphone yield silence and not the recording of the headset. I suspect my headset is OMTP. It is branded Nokia, came with a cheap pre-paid phone 2-3 years ago. Works with my Chinese imported no-name Android phone and works with the SONY Vaio Pro 13 in Windows.
