[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-10 Thread David Carter
Hi, just wanted to join the party of network woes. I too have the same
issues with this Intel AC 7260 card. After 30 minutes or so of network
activity, it drops and no longer detects my network router. So
annoying...

Title:
8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Tried turning off the power management of wlan0 without any change.

WORKAROUND: Within 2 m I have full speed and no disconnects.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-10 Thread jhouse
David Carter - that's no good! My guess would be that you now have a
missing firmware problem.

Run the following command in a terminal: ls /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7*
you should have at least one file listed.

I actually have two:
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7260-7.ucode
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7260-8.ucode

If you don't then you definitely have missing firmware . If you do have
a file, you might not have the correct one for your edition of the
wireless card.

Note that I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 (rather than clean install), and I
had put the -7.ucode version of the firmware file in place months back
in order to get the card to work at all (the older kernels didn't
support this card at all).

Here's a summary of how I installed backports for this card and the
firmware:

Download the ucode file for the 3.13 kernel here:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/iwlwifi?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=iwlwifi-7260-ucode-22.0.6.0.tgz#Firmware

Download backports for 3.13 here:
http://drvbp1.linux-foundation.org/~mcgrof/rel-html/backports/

Un-tar the downloaded files:

tar xvf backports-3.13.2-1.tar.xz
tar xvf iwlwifi-7260*

Then build backports for iwlwifi

cd backports-3.13.2-1/
make defconfig-iwlwifi
make
sudo make install

Then copy the firmware ucode file to /lib/firmware
cd ..
cd iwlwifi*
sudo cp iwlwifi* /lib/firmware

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-10 Thread jhouse
Hi Christopher, since I have it working now, I presume you wouldn't
want me to gather the bug info now, right? Should I boot from a live
14.04 image (via usb thumbdrive) or something?

Title:
8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Tried turning off the power management of wlan0 without any change.

WORKAROUND: Within 2 m I have full speed and no disconnects.

Wrong. Please file a new report so your hardware can be tracked, as
already previously requested.

Should I boot from a live 14.04 image...

That would be fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-09 Thread Ej
I have the same issues as descibed above with brand new Intel 7260ac
card.

Dell E4300 laptop - (4GB/Samsung evo 250gb) on Ubuntu 14.04 3.13.0-24-generic
Intel Driver version - 22.24.8.0 (this is shown when running dmesg | grep iwl
in terminal)

Fresh install of Linux and all updates installed - this issue has occured on
the prior installation of Ubuntu as well.
Will work connect perfectly on boot and works fine for 10mins - a few hours
then it drops out and won't reconnect until system is put in standby (shut lid
to standby) and then power back up (open lid to power back up) - then wifi
connects and runs fine.

I too get the varying signal strength issue - not physically moving
laptop at all and signal will jump from 4 bars to 1 then after a while
it jumps back to 4 bars again. Laptop is only 4-5 meters away from
WiFi router but through one heavy brick wall.

I have tried upping the output of the router (Linksys w/ DD-WRT) from
100 dB to 120 then 140 but this made the connection worse (noise to
signal was awful). Once router reset back to default at 100dB it
returned to the same as prior.

Apologies for the wall of text. :)

Kind regards,
Ej.

I can confirm 24 hours of goodness after installing backports 3.13.2-1
on top of 14.04 . Something in there fixes the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-08 Thread Daniel Holm
AP:
D-Link DIR-615
Hardware Version: B2
Firmware Version: 2.21
Connection type: 802.11n/g
WPA/WPA2 - Personal

Same thing with other AP:s

None of my other devices have this issue with any of the other AP:s

Distance between computer and AP does make a difference with pretty much
full speed at a close distance. Still occasional drops, though.

3.15rc4 has no change. Will try compat/backports now again.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-08 Thread Daniel Holm
Tried enabling proposed repo and installed linux image and headers
(3.13.0-24) and linux-firmware linux-firmware (1.127.2), the latter had
a related changelog with the latest ucode module removed due regression.
However no change. After login I get a really nice ping answers the
first 4-6 times and then timeout.

I don't understand how I install backports from that guide
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LinuxWireless#Compat-
wireless_from_upstream) since no source packages seem to be available
for 3.13-15, nor are there any backports packages avaiable using APT.

Might give ndiswrapper a try..

2014-05-08 Thread Daniel Holm
Managed to extract the .exe files and found five different .inf files in
the end. ndiswrapper reported them all as unuseful as drivers.

8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Tried turning off the power management of wlan0 without any change.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-08 Thread jhouse
I have the same problems. I'm on a Sager laptop with an Intel 7260AC .
Worked fine for months (since last September) with previous releases
(had used backports and was most recently on kernel 3.11.0-20 before
upgrade to 14.04).

Connection now exhibits: slowness (sporadically), drops (anwhere from
3 minutes after connecting to 2 hours after), and loss of connection
after screen timeout lock and logging back in (which may just be the
same problem as the time).

When in the state of the connection having dropped, the listing of
wireless connections available to connect to shows all of my neighbors'
routers, but not mine.

Disabling wireless connections and then immediately re-enabling will re-
establish the connection for 2-120 minutes.

I will also note that when initially connecting, I will have good signal
strength indicated in the status widget (e.g. 3-4 bands) but that after
some minutes it shows weaker (1-2 bands).

All this without moving the physical location of the computer (distance
to router).

2014-05-08 Thread jhouse
I downloaded and built backports 3.13.2-1 since posting my last
comment. After rebooting, and so far, wireless seems much more stable
and speedy. Will post further update after I've got more hours under
the belt with this.

** Description changed:

Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Tried turning off the power management of wlan0 without any change.
+
+ WORKAROUND: Within 2 m I have full speed and no disconnects.

2014-05-02 Thread Daniel Holm
Running 3.15rc3 withhout any change. I've noticed that when I'm really
close to the router, up to 2 m, It works great: full speed and no
disconnects. But from my working place, where all my other devices work
and my old laptop; internet is unusable. Still I got two bars in the
indicator.

I'm seeing this on an Acer Aspire S7-392. WiFi does sometimes connect
but not for long and will drop out and ask for a password again.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-01 Thread Oz123
Hi,
I am having the same issue, with Kernel 3.14.1 from the Kernel PPA on Ubuntu
14.04.
My Laptop is Lenovo IdeaPad u330p (Sold in Germany via Amazon).

I also can't use the latest firmware version iwlwifi-7260-ucode-22.212.9.0,
which won't load using this Kernel.

Hopefully we see some improvement soon.

I ran this yesterday and wireless is much improved. Not 100% but I've
only dropped once in the last hour.

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Tried turning off the power management of wlan0 without any change.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-04-30 Thread eric wi
I also have this issue since formatting and going to the official
14.04LTS. I can barely keep it connected 5-10 minutes if that.
Originally I was on 13.10 and did an update to the beta. I didn't have
any issues on 13.10 or the beta.

Most of the time I seek an ethernet jack so right now its just an
annoyance.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-04-30 Thread Justin Evans
I'm having the exact same issue on an Intel NUC.

Intel NUC D54250WYK w/ Intel 7260.HMWG on Ubuntu 14.04 - Constant
dropped connections.

I also can't seem to lock onto a 5GHz signal, but that's probably
another issue altogether.

Same issue here. Intel 7260 BT ACBGN, with Bluetooth, Ubuntu 14.04,
kernel 3.13.0-24-generic, Lenovo Thinkpad T440S. Constant dropped
connection. Have attempted firmware update via intel download and
extraction to /lib/firmware, disabling N on router, reinstalling,
intalling 13.10 and upgrading to 14.04, and disabling power management
settings through terminal, all with no noticeable effect. Any help
greatly appreciated.

2014-04-29 Thread Daniel Holm
Hi again Christopher,

I am unable to upgrade BIOS since the installer is an .exe and I dont have any
avaiable Windows' to use.
The latest BIOS changelog states that it is only a fix for HDD anyways.
Couldn't it be something else?

According to a comment here this might be resolved by some changes in a kernel
.config file:

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-04-29 Thread Daniel Holm
there are new drives for the card (22.212.9.0) and the filename is
iwlwifi-7250-9.ucode, but modinfo iwlwifi | grep 7260 still shows
iwlwifi-7260-7.ucode. [1}

Also I've found a lot of other people with the same exact issue (at
least the sound of it) and I therefore changed the title of this bug
report.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-04-29 Thread joncamfield
I have this problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga with the Intel 7260AC
wireless, running Ubuntu 14.04 , so I don't think Sony's BIOS is to
blame here.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-04-29 Thread Ethan Blanton
This bug affects me on a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition (Sputnik 3) in
14.04. Wifi is almost totally unusable at times. It was reliable under
12.04 with a raring (I believe) backported kernel; iwlwifi drivers may
have been supplied by Dell, I am not sure. 14.04 is a clean install,
not an upgrade.

I too have the same problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad L440 with the Intel

back in 13.10 as well.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-04-13 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Daniel Holm, as per
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/content/cnt-dwnl/SVP1321M2E/list#os1 an update
to your BIOS is available (R1044V7). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

- Hi,
+ Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
+ options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
+ options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

- Just got myself a Sony Vaio Pro 13 and installed Ubuntu 14.04. All
- packages is the latest.
+ After each new row I ran:
+ sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
+ sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

- The wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes all the time, at times after a bit longer
(~10 min).
- Netwiork Managers Connection information doesn't tell me what module is in
use, but lsmod contains iwlwifi, which should be the module that the hardware
uses since Linux 3.13.
-
- A few packages ago it didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it
- completely drops.

Title:
8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi
