Public bug reported:

When trying to install they yakkety beta-2 candidate iso in a VM it
hangs on trying to mount the cdrom drive. Poking around, I find there's
no device node for the cdrom in /dev, and indeed no modules for it. For
my VM it seems I need at minimum drivers/scsi/sr_mod.ko and
drivers/cdrom/cdrom.ko.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
