Re: [kicad-users] ProE igs file import ? (also Openmoko CAD and Schematics files)
I've migrated all of my projects from eagle to KiCAD, there is nothing in eagle cad that I am missing. I don't do a lot of auto routing, but I tried the auto routing in KiCAD, and I found it to be sub optimal, unless I'm just not doing it right? The documentation on the subject was poor at the time. My current project is four layers, fairly dense mixed signal and I'm having no issues with KiCAD. The out-of-the box library is fairly minimal, however on the KiCAD yahoo page, there are a number of add on libraries, and there are a number of them scattered around the internet. There was an eagle import tool kicking around at one point, I believe I still have my imported eagle cad library kicking around somewhere. --Mike Am 21.08.2008 um 01:30 schrieb Michael Shiloh: Hi Lothar, I tried the pre-compiled version of freeCAD and it worked fine. It seems that the program isn't feature complete, but I was able to open our CAD files and to rotate our parts in 3D space. Unfortunately my knowledge of CAD programs is about zero so I didn't really know what else to try. I'm pretty sure that the IGES files are only the housing and internal plastic bits, but not the components on the PC board. The schematics are indeed PDF only so far, but I will see if we can provide them in kiCAD format as well (whatever that is - I'm brand new here). The schematics include a page showing the component placement and I think the footprint, but not the 3D shape. Some questions I have for you: How mature is KiCad? How does it compare feature-wise to say Qcad or Eagle (apart from being FOSS)? How well stocked is the library? Michael . Hi Michael, I cannot say anithing about it's matureness, but it runs very stable I think. I use it yet only for hobby layout. Currently I am more involved in programming with my own project that you could see on my homepage. I came from Target v3 which only was available at Windows. KICAD runs on Mac OS X and Linux too. There is a sample PCI video grabber board with 4 layers + 2 power supply layers I think. It is as complex as FR I think. I'll try to build the current version for Mac OS X, as of I haven't yet got it anywhere. The matureness could either be tested by the openmoko comunity and propably reported from the other members here - please report :-) Lothar -- Lothar Behrens|Rapid Prototyping ... Re: [kicad-users] How to save in JPG for instance ?
On linux you would use something like 'ksnapshot'. Mike Sharkey http://www.pikeaero.com Hi group I would like to insert the schematic and PCB into a document (word and HTML web page). The easiest way would be to get the schematic and PCB in JPEG pics or so.. Ive tried to trace into the clipboard but this is not really usable when pasting into Photoshop. Is there a way to do something like that ??? Best Stephane
Re: [kicad-users] Multiple sheets

I think it is a great system for really large project but for the day-to-day 3-5 sheet project I would definitely prefer something more simple (and less prune to human errors). I couldn't find anything but still hoping to find a workaround. Cheers, Heiko What I have done in the passed is to create one top level sheet containing my 4-5 sheets and then just interconnect them on the top level sheet. Don't know, there might be an easier way. --Mike
Re: [kicad-users] Are we nearing a stable release?
Many Thanks! --Mike [clip] The next stable version is now ready. I am just updating the doc, before the stable release. -- Jean-Pierre CHARRAS Maître de conférences Directeur d'études 2ieme année. Re: [kicad-users] Panelisation
You might want to try pcbnew File-Append_Board. I think that's how I've done it in the passed. Mike Sharkey Pike Aerospace Research Corporation www.pikeaero.com Is there a way of doing a panelisation? I have to create 3 PCBs on one panel anyway and thought it would be a good idea to save the money and do the whole panelisation myself. Would also give me a better respond time to our PCB manufacturer who always wants to have done something in a different way ;-) I know people who use Circad or Eagle and do things like this with a script but a simple block copy that keeps component designators (most important!) would be good enough. Any way to get that done?
Re: [kicad-users] QFN48 package in EagleFootPrints (EagleConverts.zip) unusable
There is a module editor in PCBNEW. It's on the toolbar about 5th button from the left side. Mike Sharkey Pike Aerospace Research Corporation www.pikeaero.com Hi all, [clip] If I knew how to edit this part (is there a footprint editor?) then I would try to fix this module. (Kicad Version 2008-02-01) Thanks for any hint! Tobias DG3YEV
Re: [kicad-users] Guard Ring
Dan, Yeah, I thought I'd probably have to make a module but just thought I'd ask anyway. Yeah, I don't like the idea of turning DRC off. :) Thanks! Cheers! --Mike On Monday 02 October 2006 10:07, Dan Andersson wrote: Mike, I normally create a symbol and a footprint module for this. This seems to be the only way to include RF and other leakage patterns on the pcb. However, you can work around all this by switching of the design rules check. In the PCB program, Preferences General Drc on/off If the Drc is off, you can add whatever you want on the PCB and connect it to wherever you like to. However!!! The correct way is as ever - make a symbol/module for it as it will be included and autorouted properly! Cheers Dan Please read the Kicad FAQ in the group files section before posting your question.
