[Koha] Open source RFP doc for libraries

2020-11-16 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora,

Does anyone know of any open source Request for Proposal/Tender type
documents, or any other documents that libraries have shared that were
used to procure library software?

I feel like I heard about something along these lines a while back, but
can't find anything just now.

Thanks heaps,
Kathryn

[Koha] Kohacon2020 will go ahead - online and in person

2020-05-12 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora koutou katoa,

I hope you are all safe and well, wherever you are.

The Kohacon team at Catalyst are excited to announce the following
decision: we will go ahead with Kohacon2020.

Kohacon2020 will be a hybrid online and in-person event, appropriate to
the New Zealand and global rules on travel at the time.

Following the success of the online Kohathon event, we realised that
Koha storytelling, teaching, learning, planning and coding can happen,
whether we are together online or in person. We already know that this
is a strength of our project.

Conference programme:
- As much as possible, it will stay the same:
https://2020.kohacon.org/posts/programme/
- We are thinking about live streamed presentations, streamed library
tours and social events, workshops delivered using an online training
platform, and we already have collaboration tools for us to work
together on Koha - we'll just make sure everyone knows how to participate.

Information for conference attendees:
- If you would like to register as an online-only participant, you will
hear more soon about how to register. We are very excited that the
online element of the conference will make it accessible to more people.
- We will keep in touch about NZ travel restrictions, to help you decide
whether to plan attending in person. Booking travel is not recommended
by us at this stage. We still plan to make a decision in July about how
we will proceed "in person" so travel may be booked if possible.

Information for conference speakers:
- Speakers, please could you email kohacon2...@catalyst.net.nz to say
whether or not you willing to speak at the conference, if your
presentation will be delivered online-only.
- Please also provide your speaker bio (information about yourself) if
you haven't already . We will be in touch again with further details for
speakers.

Thank you all for supporting the conference so far. We will be in touch
again soon.

Extra special thanks to our conference sponsors: Bywater Solutions,
EBSCO, PTFS-Europe and Catalyst.

Best wishes,
Kathryn, on behalf of the Kohacon team

[Koha] Update on Kohacon

2020-03-22 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora koutou,

Unfortunately it seems increasingly unlikely that Kohacon will go ahead.
Our recommendation is that you do not book any flights or accommodation
at this stage.

We intend to make a decision to go ahead, or not, in July.

Very best wishes to you all, and your families, through this difficult time.

[Koha] Kohacon2020 call for Sponsorship

2019-12-12 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora koutou katoa | Greetings to all of you,

For those who don't know, Kohacon is free to attend! This is possible
because of the generosity of our supporters and sponsors.

The sponsorship options for Kohacon2020 are now detailed at:
https://2020.kohacon.org/posts/sponsors/

Please consider sharing these details with any organisation or
individual you think would like to show their support for the Koha
Community. If there are any organisations you would like the Kohacon2020
team to approach directly, please email us at kohacon2...@catalyst.net.nz.

NZ is a long way to come for most people. This year we will additionally
be acknowledging all organisations who fund staff attendance at Kohacon.
Individuals will have the opportunity to say that an organisation paid
for their attendance when they register. Registrations will be opened in
the new year.

Thank you in advance for your support with gaining sponsorship for Kohacon.

It's time for the Kohacon2020 call for talk submissions! We welcome you
all to propose a talk at: https://2020.kohacon.org/posts/talksubmission/

The Kohacon2020 Conference theme is: We have over 15,000 libraries and

The conference theme aims to encourage talks that look forward to future
plans and aspirations for the Koha project, including specific examples
of what individual libraries are planning and doing.

interesting as possible in a very short timeframe!

Re: [Koha] Kohacon2020 Call for talks

2019-11-10 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora koutou katoa,

I'll cut to it - talk proposals for Kohacon20 are due on 1 December 2019!

So along with everything else you have to do before the end of this
month, please think ahead to our conference next year, and share a story
about something you learned that could help others, an idea for the
future of Koha, or...something else.

If you have ideas for talks and workshops you would like to attend -
please feel free to throw those ideas out to the list, or contact
kohacon2...@catalyst.net.nz and we will think about who we could
shoulder-tap to give those talks and workshops.

Best wishes,
Kathryn

interesting as possible in a very short timeframe!

explanation.
 * Workshops: An opportunity to teach something, whether that's a new
framework, concept, or skill. Timeframes are negotiable. Workshops will be on
Friday 23 October 2020.

[Koha] Linux Conference - Open GLAM and Open Source

2017-11-02 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Hello,

Something for those who can get to Sydney, Australia:

Access and Memory: Open GLAM and Open Source
https://linux.conf.au/programme/miniconfs/open-glam/
22-26 January 2018

Linux Conference Australia are running mini-conferences Mon-Tues before
the main conference. This year there is a mini-conf focussed on Open
GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) and Open Source. It
would be great to see Koha represented by both people and talks! The
mini conf organisers invite talks on topics that address how open
source and open access affect the GLAM sector.
Best wishes,

[Koha] Kohacon2020!

2016-10-26 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora koutou,

I'm Kathryn, if you don't know me, I work on the Koha team at Catalyst
IT from the Wellington NZ office.

Kohacon2020 you ask? Well, I don't know what I'm doing in 2020 either,
but it turns out some people are already making plans :)

I attended a meeting recently because New Zealand is bidding for two
international library conferences in 2020, and Kohacon could make it
three. The other two conferences that will have bids in from NZ are:

  * http://ifla.org/ The International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions, which some of you may have
attended in Ohio USA this year
  * and http://www.iamslic.org/ The International Association of
Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers,
that recently held their annual conference in Mexico.

Koha will be 20 years old in 2020, and some guy who's been working on
Koha for a long while started a rumor that we should bring it back here
for the big celebration. So, I will follow how the bids for IFLA and
IAMSLIC go over the next year, as it's possible we could try and bring
the conference dates together. Not that we can do much about it from a
Koha perspective until 2019!

I would be curious to hear from any Koha libraries out there who
regularly or sometimes attend either of the other two conferences.

Best wishes,
Kathryn

Re: [Koha] How many Koha libraries are there worldwide?

2016-08-22 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Hi Michael, and all,

Catalyst say "around 15,000" lately, and feel pretty confident that this
is still a conservative number. Why?

As Michael said, many libraries choose not to report anywhere that they
use Koha, or might not think to do it, and the project does not make it
compulsory. We know this looking at
http://www.librarytechnology.org/lwc-processquery.pl?ILS=Koha because we
can see gaps where many countries that have strong/prolific Koha
communities are not well-represented. It's an English-speaking website -
some Koha libraries may be unable to access it or have no reason to
engage with it.

Liz Rea who runs koha-community.org in her own time (thank you Liz) just
let me know that there were 2684 unique visits to the Koha download
page, from 1-21 August. That's 21 days, 2684/21 = 128 unique visits per
day. Lets multiply that by 365 and we have 46,720 visits in 1 year (they
won't all be unique when we do this based on a 3 week sample, but it's
an indication). Koha has been around for going on 17 years, and we all
know that the rate of libraries leaving Koha is really really low :-)

*If* we all reported to hea.koha-community.org we could tell a more
complete story (I'm not pointing the finger, Catalyst don't currently
report all our customers to Hea - I mean to ask them all though!)

We don't know for sure how many libraries in New Zealand use Koha. It's
around 80-100 if you count by physical branches, rather than
organisations. There are 49 items in librarytechnology.org that match
Koha+New Zealand, so NZ is only approx half-reported there, and we speak
ok English ;) There are loads more Koha libraries around the pacific,
often supported out of NZ or Australia.

Best wishes,
Kathryn

Re: [Koha] EBSCOHost and Koha? Is anyone using/integrating both?

2014-08-21 Thread Kathryn Tyree
Kia ora,

This may address more general interest in using Koha to search across
other databases (in this case using the Ebsco EDS Api).

You can read a story from NIWA who worked with Ebsco and Catalyst to
create and implement the EDS api, here:
http://koha-community.org/koha-community-newsletter-april-2014/#ebsco

Since NIWA's implementation, a few other libraries have followed, and
expanded on this. The Department of Corrections in NZ sponsored a new
feature so the OPAC search box can be customisable, see:
http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=12296 This
allowed the library to have their desired view of the search box - a
two-tabbed search box. One tab to search discovery (Ebsco+Koha) and
another for Koha Catalogue only search. Perhaps I'll do a little news
item with screen shots sometime.

Cheers,
Kathryn

Hi Viktor,

I'm Kathryn from Catalyst, and will be coordinating things if we go
ahead with this. I understand Melissa has let you know about costs. I'll
be in touch with everyone contributing if we go ahead.

Hope we can get this improvement in by working together :)

Best wishes,
Kathryn

  Hello everyone,

My name is Melissa Clarkson and I am the Team Leader of the Library

We have started scanning book cover images that are not available
from Amazon to have them available in our OPAC and also our current
awareness bulletin. They display great in the bulletin, but in the
OPAC it creates formatting issues and looks plain ugly.

I have approached Catalyst IT in Wellington New Zealand about this
issue, and they have advised that it will take 28 hours. They will
work through the bug that is creating this issue. The outcome will
be that we can use multiple sources to get the book covers from,
including local images uploaded in to Koha. I can't justify paying
for all of this given it is 28 hours, so I'm coming to the community
to see if you would be interested in contributing to a joint
  development of this.

If you are interested, please respond by email by 4 June 2014, with
