The only suggestion I would have would be not keep the export for read_field, and modify that sub to check for a value in the subfield value. That is, instead of having read, read_field, and read_subfield, keep all the code in read_field and just do an if/then/else. That way the exported name is still read_field, and thus doesn't change the API. It's entirely possible for SimpleMARC to be used in custom scripts, so adding to the API is fine, but removing/renaming api subs should be avoided. I know that such an occurence is unlikely at this point, but even in the future it will confuse users to have update_field, copy_field, move_field, read, and delete. It just breaks the naming convention. The other option would be to remove _field from all the subroutines. I have no problem with either choice. Let's just keep the convention standardized! Other than that, it looks good to me! It's a move that make sense, Help strings accounts for 44% of total word count for Staff, and as stated on Comment #1, it could enable a different workflow on translation work. It's more a hack than an elegant solution, but it works. Feel free to suggest another approach. To test: We need to test complete functionality, i.e. create and update translation files and install translation, and verify that no string is missing. 1) Before applying the patch, we need some data from staff file. Also there are 137 repeated lines between new staff and help) All this tells me that all string to translate are preserved 5) Install translation perl translate install de-DE Enable language on staff, and check that help files are translated 6) Finally, create translation files rm po/de-DE-* perl translate create de-DE verify that all files are created. Maybe should we only keep a call to delete_field which will call either the private _delete_field or _delete_subfield routines depending on the subfield value. This is also the default. If the preference is set to 'Don't show' the staff members name is not displayed and the column 'Managed by' in the table of suggestions in the patron account is not displayed. I have looked into this a bit, it seems that for the OPAC cart the problem does
not exist and I think I found the reason in Auth.pm:

A librarian who is focused on scanning can easily scan another item and pass over the form, which is equivalent to clicking the ignore button. Test Plan: 1) Place a hold on an item 2) Scan that item's barcode though returns.pl 3) Note the hold trap 4) Scan another barcode 5) Note you were able to bypass interacting with the trapped hold form 6) Apply this patch 7) Repeat steps 2-4 8) Note you must now click one of the buttons. If the Show link is clicked in the results page, the user is then redirected to the remote Koha's OPAC to see the record's details. This feature can be useful if you have multiple libraries with their own Koha instance and you want your users to be able to search for books in your other libraries. Please note that this will only work with Koha instances. The links in the results page won't work with other normal Z39.50 servers. On current master, the new tests *work* for MARC21 if the indexing mode is GRS-1, but, as expected, fail if the indexing mode is DOM. On top of the patches for this bug, the new tests work if the indexing mode is DOM. Yay! Here's the catch: they fail, and fail with a crash, if the indexing mode is GRS-1. This is because Zebra itself returns a Z39.50 error 14 (failure while presenting record) in line 493 of Search.pm: $record = $results[ $i - 1 ]-record($j)-raw(); Because Zebra refuses to render an invalid ISO2709 blob MARC XML, -record($j) returns undef, and the crash occurs when it tries to run undef-raw(). Unfortunately, it's not a matter of just wrapping an eval() around it and carrying on. Here's the situation today: Over-large record in Zebra with GRS-1: can retrieve it ... with DOM: can't retrieve it Note that it works for GRS-1 mostly because (a) Zebra doesn't try to do any conversions; it think it's storing iso2709, and if you want iso2709 back, it just sends it and (b) MARC::Record is pretty forgiving. Here's the situation with the current proposed patches: ... with GRS-1: can't retrieve, and it crashes the search ... with DOM: it works To sum up: this patch would cause a regression for GRS-1 users that happen to have over-large records in their database. I see couple ways to solve this. One would be to simply immediately desupport GRS-1 -- but I don't think our UNIAMRC users are quite there yet. I tested in a sandbox and it did what was expected. Hold trap failed before the patch applied, and then the hold trap worked after. I like that the barcode field is completely deactivated, rather than the hold trap just taking the focus off. This forces you to push a button. Our current jquery that addresses this just takes the focus off. We tossed around the idea of deactivating the barcode field altogether, but didn't have the nerve to do that much. I think the behavior is acceptable and expected. This includes adding a non-NULL default '' branchcode field to the opac_news table. When a user is logged in they receive both '' and their branch news. When no user is logged in, they only receive '' news. '' means all branches. REVISED TEST PLAN - 1) Do a fresh install, to ensure that branchcode is created as a field in the opac_news table. 2) Do an upgrade to confirm that the branchcode field is added to the opac_news table. 3) prove -v t/db_dependent/NewsChannels.t This should test all the changes in C4::NewsChannels functions. 4) Log into the staff client - Does the News display on the main page bust? 5) Add a new dummy branch (so it has no items or borrowers) 6) Go to Tools-News - Are the locations properly display? 7) Add a News item, for 'All' interfaces for 'All Branches'. 8) Add a News item, for 'Librarian interface' interfaces for the dummy branch. 9) Add a News item, for 'Slip' interfaces at your user branch. 10) Add a News item, for 'OPAC' interface at your user branch. 11) Change the Location and Branch filters. - Do they show what you select after you click the Filter button? (Unpatched the Location does not!) - Are the items displayed matching what is selected? - Are the drop downs containing the expected values? (All, Librarian Interface, Slip, and OPAC (lang -- for each lang installed) (All Branches, and every branch listed) 12) Click 'Edit' for one of the news items added. - Does what comes up match what was displayed? ( Unpatched the Location may be 'All' ) - Are the drop downs containing the expected values? (All, Librarian Interface, Slip, and OPAC (lang -- for each lang installed) (All Branches, and every branch listed) - Does the submitted values match the changes made? 13) Find a patron to print a slip for. Print Slip. - Does both the 'All' and 'Slip' news show up on the print slip? 14) In a new tab, go to OPAC - Does the News display on the main page bust? - Does it display the news item for a specific branch? (It shouldn't when patched, but unpatched it would) (Only one of the new things added should be displayed) 15) Log in as yourself on OPAC. - Does that piece of News display now too? (Both things added should be displayed) 16) In the staff client, delete the dummy branch. - Does the 'Librarian interface' news item exist any more?
