KR> gap between wings

2009-10-23 Thread John Martindale
I think the plans are silent on removal all together.

I use two cheap adjustable office swivel seats (backs removed) on castors
under the wing to support it using the height adjustment to reflect the
dihedral. Then I remove all four bolts, fuel lines etc and just wheel the
wing out. Simple and the seats are used for beer drinking outside the
hangar at other times.

Hey Phil

How do you do this when the bottom bolts in main and rear spar are not in
alignment (as per the plans)?

If the wing pivots downwards on them they must align otherwise one or other
will bind and strain the WAFs.

I too left extra room as Dan did.
I can remove the top WAF bolts, and lower the wing tip onto the ground or
something soft, then remove the bottom bolts and lower the wing to the
ground, very easily, but only do this at annual inspections. or if a problem
my comes up.
I too made covers similar to Dan's, very easy to do. Mine have 4 screws each
holding them on.

KR> gap between wings

I solved the "gap" problem as follows. I cut and glued an additional
48" rib to the inboard end of the outer wing spars and used that
extra rib and the outer 36" rib as my sanding templets to shape the
outer wing. With the stub wing completed and the outer wing
completed, that left the gap between the outer wing and the stub wing
to fill. I filled the gap with foam, sanded , and glassed. I then
cut the wings apart, enlarging the cut in the ares of the wing attach
fittings and separated the two. I sanded the underside of this foam
to form a triangle shape and glassed that. That gives me a gap, with
wings installed, the thickness of a hacksaw blade with cutouts in the
area of the wing attach fittings. I tried making glass covers for
the gap but when the first set did not meet the quality I was looking
for I went to the hardware store and bought a roll of aluminum
"flashing", 6"s wide, cut it in half, and attached to the wing with a
few screws. That has worked for 355 hours now and I doubt if I'll
ever change it. I do have a roll of white flashing material that I
may get around to installing some day.

I later found it necessary to cut a 4" X 9" access hole in the bottom
of the stub wing between the forward and aft spar to attach fuel
lines, electrical lines, and have access to calibrate my fuel senders.

Has anyone ever seen the British homebuilt "The Chilton"?

I ran across it awhile back on the internet and realized that at 40HP it had
quite impressive performance for it's day. It was designed just prior to the
war, and used a Ford engine.

KR> gap between wings

2009-10-23 Thread Dan Heath
I have a different opinion on this. Give yourself plenty of room, maybe an
inch or so, and even more, from spar to spar end at the attach points,
extending enough fore and aft for getting your fingers in there to attach
the wings. Then make some good gap covers like the ones you can see at:
http://krbuilder.org/WingGapCovers/index.html

And I just noticed that the method for attaching was not included, which I
will document next month when I remove them for annual. They attach with 2
screws and a couple of springs.

The reason for this radical opinion, is that I tried my best to get them
real close on my first KR, and ended up buggering them up before it was all
done. Just too much work for very little reward, if any.

can I put all the gap filling foam on the wing ? Which is the easier way. I
do plan on using the wrap to seal it when all is said and done.

Well I am convinced that you just enjoy taking things apart and putting
them back together again.

Re the EMPI heads, there are EMPI heads and other EMPI heads. Mine are
EMPI, with the larger valves, but this version also has more mass - it
weighs a couple pounds more than standard EMPI heads. I would work with
Steve on getting the right heads for the 2180 as he clearly knows all
about the different heads and which ones are appropriate to get the kind
of longevity I'm experiencing.

**

Interesting piece in the current "The Experimenter" on high-time
experimentals. Mike Melville's Long-EZ has 4200 hours, built in 1980.
Dick Rutan has one with even more hours, but it's retired. It is called
"Old Blue." There's an RV-6 with 3000.
