KR> KR1 plans

2010-10-18 Thread david feiger
Bought my KR2 plans spring of '81. Had not seen another experimental aircraft
under construction before or during construction of mine (three years). Had no
trouble at all. Possibly years building model airplanes (mid-'40s to late-'70s)
prepared me. Just think of the KR1 as a 'big model. The dimension are there:
datems for laying out the fuseloge sides, etc.

I don't have my finished-up can of vinylester with me, but I'm pretty sure
it says 5 CC's of resin per pint, rather than 5 ounces! I don't think my
gallon came with but about 3 ounces total of catalyst anyway. I'm guessing
that five ounces could cook off and cause a small thermonuclear explosion
that could possible take out 4-5 neighboring hangars in about two
nanoseconds after mixing. So assuming my memory isn't completely gone on
this, I used a tiny syringe about half the size of a pencil, which was
something like ONE cc for the whole thing, graduated in tenths of a cc. I
mixed 4 or 8 ounces at a time to do my fuel tank, because any more than that
would go exothermic and harden solid in 12 minutes in the hundred degree
heat of my hangar this summer. I found that 1cc syringe in some old stuff
of Jim Hill's, and my veterinarian brother confirmed that he uses them on
occasion. Local farm coops are known to sell syringes, and even the drug
store might sell you a pack of them for cheap with the needles removed.
Your local vet would probably give you his old ones with the needles removed
if you asked him. Your mileage will probably vary, of course...

My instructions that came with the VE say 5oz to a pint. No way I need to

is by weight, like I do with AeroPoxy. Does anyone know how many drops or
what, go with how many OZ or Grams of VE.

KR> KR-1 Plans

2010-10-18 Thread tinya...@aol.com
I have KR plans purchased directly from Jeanette. I gave her $60 I think
it was, and she gave me the plans in person. As odd as this may sound, I
didn't buy my KR drawings because I was wanting a KR. I buy plans mostly as
a collector, used more for education. I am a member of the KR group
because I enjoy the groups activity, the "get-r-done" attitude, and the ideas
that come from the members as they build their aircraft. The KR has evolved
into something other than what the plans offer. I don't think you want to
build either a KR1 or 2 without a HUGE dose of internet research, going to
the yearly fly-in, or visiting one on one with those who have been there.
If you don't do at least 2 of the three you will be sorry down the line.

What do I think of the plans? I think I could build a rocket ship of an
airplane from them using the new airfoil. To power the airplane I would use
the 120 HP Yamaha Vector snowmobile engine like is being used in the
gyrocopters. I bet it would cruise well past redline.

What am I building? Streak Shadow from an old kit. I want to fly from my
property (short) and be able to cruise at least 100 mph. I have my eyes
on the Yamaha for this airplane too. Same weight/size as the Geo metro, but
twice the power.

If a KR is what you want, then a KR you shall have. There is massive
amount of information out there. I have never met a person who isn't willing
to share their construction work.

Go to it.

3) Several prints labeled KR-2...
4) 6 pages missing from the instruction manual.

At this point I don't know if I have everything I need to build the
aircraft or not.
I have a sinking feeling I wasted $139.00. I thought my Corby plans left
something
to be desired. After paging through the KR-1 plans I will never say a bad

about the Corby prints again!

I ran across a post in the archive that advised purchasing the KR-2 plans
to supplement
the KR-1 plans. It sure seems a shame to have to spend an additional

As I'm building a KR-1 (kinda) I may be able to help out here.
I don't have the whole inventory listing of what you have, but I can tell
you what came with mine...

Builders "Manual" (roughly 70 pages or so... don't quote me on the
number).
Supplement pack of drawings (some of which are indeed labeled with KR-2,
because they are common)
Misc package with W&B info, kit pricing, etc...

I didn't get mine from Steve (bought in 2003), but I'm assuming they are
probably still the same.

No, they aren't the most detailed and informative plans there, but after
you read through them a couple times,
you get the idea.  There is enough information to build the plane, even if
you have to deduce some of the figures for
yourself.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me an email.

Having closely followed the list for almost 7 years now it's been
a huge learning experience. One thing that seems to be working well
for a majority of the flying KRs is simplicity. Craig, your project

KR> KR-1 Plans

2010-10-18 Thread John Caudle
Hi Virgil,

While reading the archives it sounded like there

has been issues with the KR-1 plans long before Steve took over.

You are correct!  I should have contacted Steve first and for that I
apologize to him and the group!  My post was not meant  as
a flame!

The biggest problem is I don't know if I have a problem. (Plans related that
is.)

My question to the group is, do I have what I need to build the aircraft?

With the greatest respect,

The two photos Mark posted below are enough incentive to get a few
hours done in this shop this evening. Get 'em flying!
