KR> Gathering location

2011-02-17 Thread Jeff York
Larry,

I would be glad to help with recruiting companies and vendors for forums.

Just a few questions.

Anyone out there willing to share their experiences and expert knowledge to
participate in a learning forum? Engine, glassing, sheet  metal, electrical,
new
technologies, wood working, props, first flights, annuals, do's dont's and what
to look for? fuel systems, tank building, insturments, radios, builders logs
and
high tech builders logs, what I did wrong and what I learned from it? Or, If I
did it again, How I would do it this time? valve adjustments, cooling

Do we have a list of all previouos vendors which I can use as a lead list?

Do we have a prospect list of vendors we may have not seen in past gatherings
that we would like to see in attendance?

Do we have a maximum number of vendors?

What data, specific to total attendance, space, time and other that I might use
to call on prospects to sell them on coming?

Have we ever thought of prospecting other groups to attend? such as the Kleenex
, dragonfly. Quickie or EAA chapters? If we want to keep it someowhat closed to
other groups I am fine with that.Just thinking out loud and wondering if
attendance might help promote the cause as well as off set costs.

I would think that gleaing the vendor list from the LSA convention might be a
great place to start to look for vendor participants? I know that considering
the scale of our gathering it may be difficult to get vendors to commit to
forums. But, I am willing to give it a try.

If there should be a larger group of vendors interested, would we want to  think
about smaller food vendors or T shirt vendors or other aircraft related vendors?

I am not trying to get to far outside of the theme or confines. Just thinking
out loud.I am not opposed to working hard to get interests, cold calling and
promoting and working to help make it a good event. Just tell me to shut up if
or where I go to far.

Mt.Vernon is actually a "state of mind" when mentioned by a KR
builder / flier, :-) but the actual city of Mt.Vernon is located in
southern Illinois.  Go to www.krgathering.org for all the details.

I guess my e-mail went through as you replied to it but I've still
not gotten my copy of what I sent out.  I hope I'm the only one.

(THIS IS THE THIRD POST OF THE SAME E-MAIL. I SENT THE ORIGINAL THIS
MORNING BUT NEVER GOT IT BACK. I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO MISS AN
OPPORTUNITY. :-) )

With only 210 day left till the 2011 KR Gathering I thought I'd
better get started with the planning. Several of you have indicated
a willingness to help but I hesitate to appoint anyone to a duty
without them knowing what is involved. So, I'll post here the areas
of need and the responsibilities and let anyone that is willing to
take on the responsibility for that area step forward.

Forums:
Assume complete responsibility for forums to be conducted to include
acquiring speakers, setting schedule, determine forum subjects, etc.
Minimum number of forums would be two, one on engines and one on
airframe. Local support provided will be the room and P.A. system.

Awards:
Assume complete responsibility for Gathering awards to include:
securing judges to judge KR's, determine categories, determine
winners based on judging results, design and purchase the awards. Budget= $225

I currently have a volunteer to do the name tags and help to try to
streamline the registration. Chris Collins and crew have pretty much
said they will take care of the registration table as in the past but
I'm sure they could use an extra hand or two the days of the Gathering.

I am currently in communications with the Holiday Inn and info should
be coming out soon on that. At this point I will assume
responsibility for the hats and shirts as well as the banquet. If
additional needs develop I will ask for additional support. I will
be available to anyone who volunteers to answer questions and help
you with your plans.

For those of you that have attended past Gathering at Mt.Vernon, you
know what a great facility they have and the great local
support. Well, it's getting even better this year. The airport is
in the finishing stages of a new 11,800 square foot hangar, complete
with bathrooms and shower to be used by Gathering campers. That will
be in addition to facilities already in place. Chris and crew are
looking forward to the Gathering like kids to Christmas.

It won't be long now. Start making your plans..

Thanks..

The FAA also says that we are responsible to self assess ourselves on rather
>or not we are medically fit to fly rather we qualify for a medical or not,
>and if you have failed a FAA medical you do not qualify for LSA.

I lost my medical after a heart attack in 1993. I also cannot afford to jump
through the hoops every year. I also know my limitations and would not fly
if I were not in top shape. My flight doc. said that there was no reason
that I should not have my medical renewed so I took the physical and was
turned down. That eliminates me from getting a LSA.
I will register my aircraft as a motor glider and fly. I would like
someone to check the FAA's records and see if there was anyone that had a
second heart attack while flying or who had had a medical related crash
after getting a special use medical.

I never lost my medical nor should I, there is no rule that says I have to
surrender my medical only that I have to ground myself, per AOPA Aeromedical
Division. Since my heart attack I have been watching my diet and exercising and
am in better physical shape than I have been in 20 years. I just don't have the
money to have a stress test every year and loose my medical for 1 or 2 months
while waiting on the FAA to review my doctors report. I am fortunate that my
cardiologist is a pilot, the only one in the practice and friends with my flight
surgeon I will probably jump through all the hoops this year just so I can fly
until I get an LSA then let it laps after that.
In no way would I let my love of flight get in the way of sound judgment when
it comes to others. My attack happened while in flight at night with my
daughter and son-in-law on board. Neither of them have a clue how to fly. What
if I my heart had stopped while up there? 3/4 of the family gone all at one
time, I think of that every day.
As to building my KR to light sport rules, I thought about that a lot. my
chief concern is the fact that I already built it for the AS5046 wings. You
guys know better than me though. If someone could give me an idea of how much
longer I have to make the wings to get the stall speed down and slow the top
speed down I would appreciate it. I haven't installed my gear yet, maybe I
could go with tricycle gear to help the top speed? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Maybe I can keep my other child after all.
 Thanks in advance,
 John
