KR> Re: Removable Turtle Deck

2011-05-15 Thread Dene Collett
Hi guys
Regarding the removeable turtledecks, I am in the process of changing from a
standard KR bubble canopy to a dragonfly canopy and will probably have to
make a new forward deck. My rear deck has not yet been attached to the
fuselage. I like the idea of having the decks removeable but am concerned
with water ingress when the plane stands outside in the rain. Can those with
removeable decks comment on this and how it was overcome please.

KR> re re wing tip slop

2011-05-15 Thread Martin Pearce
Thanks Dan and Larry I think it is the bolt holes, or maybe the bolts
... I'll check and see. The movement is definitely between the two halves of
the wing at the WAFs and was checked with the bolts inserted but not
tightened up at all. ... Just when I thought we were almost ready to
fly! Still, better to find the problem now and not at 2000 ft over the bay

Is there a spec for the maximum diameter permitted for the bolts? I have
heard that overlarge bolts will reduce the load tolerance of the WAF
Has anyone bushed the fittings and maybe used a taper pin to eliminate wear
over time?

Cheers

Martin

KR> Calibrating fuel with Dynon and Capacitance probes

2011-05-15 Thread Dan Heath
Anyone know anything about calibrating the Dynon when you have Capacitance
probes, which also must be calibrated?

I am hoping that you don't have to calibrate the probe, remove the fuel, and
then calibrate the Dynon.

KR> W with Wing Tanks

2011-05-15 Thread Dan Heath
I completed the W empty. The new empty weight is 720#. I guess that with
the Corvair on, it will be around 750 or so. I hope it will still fly.
Just guessing at the station for the wing tanks, being sort of in the area
of the people, I will be sitting just aft of center, with full fuel, and
with 10 gallons, still just barely aft of center. This is good for the
added weight of the Corvair, but not so good for flying with the VW. I hope
to get the actual station for the fuel, tomorrow, and then, I will know for
sure.

I saw one or two post to your question and one suggested you install
the engine and do a W to determine location. I see no point in
building two engine mounts. Do a complete W series without the
engine, complete with fuel and pilot and passenger, and then
determine the engine location using paper and pencil. Use the center
of mass of the engine for the moment arm and don't forget the weight
and arm of the mount, cowl, prop, spinner, battery, etc. The front
two or three inches of the CG range would be a good target with pilot
and fuel if adding a passenger doesn't move the CG beyond the aft limit.

Are you saying you have movement at the wing attach fittings? With
the bolts installed, there should be ZERO movement of the fittings.

KR> wing tip slop

2011-05-15 Thread Dan Heath
Once the wings are bolted on, the play must be zero. If I understand you
correctly. Find the cause and correct it. I certainly suspect that the
bolt holes are too large and you will have to ream them out to the next size
up.

Don't take my word for it. I am sure you will get more replies on this.

I presume that some vertical play is necessary and a result of being able to
fit the wing bolts, but how much is too much?

And if I have to reduce the play, does anyone have any recommendations
please

KR> wing tip slop

2011-05-15 Thread Martin Pearce
Just did a final(?) W & B before registering and hopefully flying the first
of my two, now allocated the rego 19 - 7814 . However. When we put the
wings on (for the first time in over 6 months) we noticed about 1 inch play
vertical at each wing tip . Fore and aft play seemed to be much less, to
the point that it wasn't noticeable..

I presume that some vertical play is necessary and a result of being able to
fit the wing bolts, but how much is too much? Is there a spec? Couldn't see
one in the one manual which came with my two 'planes . Would appreciate
advice

And if I have to reduce the play, does anyone have any recommendations
please
