KR> Led landing light

2015-01-22 Thread Jeff Scott
I bought part # AR111-CW9W-30 from SuperbirghtLEDs.com. This is a drop in
replacement for GE-4509 100W landing lights I used in my KR and SuperCub. Both
planes had the landing lights mounted with this kit from Aircraft Spruce:
11-08000 LEADING EDGE LANDING LIGHT KIT. Just removed the 100W lights and
installed the 11W LED lights in their place. Haven't flown them at night yet,
but they seem a bit more intense as recognition lights with the wigwag. These
lights are available in both cool white and warm white colors.

For the last 18 years I have always smelled hot plastic when the landing lights
were on; even on as wigwags. I've never been able to determine whether I was
smelling hot wiring or hot plexiglass lenses and have never found any heat
damage to the wiring or landing light covers. But regardless, I don't like
smelling hot anything while in the air. Additionally, with a generator rather
than an alternator, my battery was usually pretty well depleted by the time I
got to the ground after throttling back on approach, so I often times ended up
landing with very little light from the landing lights. The low draw (11W)
LEDs should address both issues, which is why I changed them out. My SuperCub
has a 60 Amp alternator, so the draw of the landing lights isn't really
noticeable. I don't have plans to change out the landing lights on it any time
soon unless I find that I really like the lighting on the KR when I get around
to testing it at night.

Does 860.00 $ sound about right for a canopy that's from aircraft
windshield company or is there a better choice for the flatter dragonfly

KR> Yamaha Genesis, Motus/Viking engines

2015-01-22 Thread Jiro

Yamaha Genesis Snowmobile engine:

Rotary Forum has had extensive discussions of and by folks
who have adapted the Yamaha Genesis 3 or 4 cylinder snowmobile engines for use
in gyros. The links below are to the latest and apparently more available
adapter called ?Skytrax?by it's creator Neal Jenkings. This
allows a Rotax C box to bolt up to the 4 cylinder RX-1 years 2003-5 The cost is
$1500 for the adapter and then the C Box needs some machining (which the
fabricator will do for shipping costs). Neal is using carburetors on his
autogyro.

Here is one of the most recent Rotary Forum discussions

http://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37557=5

Here is his you tube video of how to bolt up the conversion
adapter and the C box.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8UXxcV1CFQ

There are several threads on the Rotary Forum. I have read
some of them and will summarize. The 3 cylinder is much harder to adapt, spins
slower about 8700 rpm and makes 120 hp carbs, 130 hp EFI. There are various
adaptions of the 3 cylinder, but it seems to be on a custom basis.

The 4 cylinder RX-1 revs to 10,700rpm and makes up to 150 hp
is the R1 motorcycle engine adapted to snowmobile use with a CVT. This required
an internal reduction of 1:1.19 and a harmonic balancer. The cover for the
balancer and
reduction Skytrax replaces allowing the C box to bolt to the engine. Another
fabricator designed and marketed a two piece plate that can be adapted to any
gearbox. I believe this costs $1300. I am not sure of availability.

These are used snowmobile engines which cost $2000-$4500.
There is debate on the suitability of the C box for the RX-1 given it?s 150
peak hp and high rpm. The weight of the RX-1 FWF (or FW rearward) seems to be
about 165-170 lbs including fluids, radiator and everything else. There are few
hundred hours on the Genesis engines aero converted. I don?t recall I think the
3 cylinder engines had more air time.

 Motus

VikingAircraft lists the Viking 135 for about $20,000. This
is the Motus aero conversion. There is very little info on their site

2015-01-22 Thread peter
Trevor; You sound just like me when I was starting out. High performance
planes, vacuum systems, IFR...do all those things, but remember, each is a
distraction and delay from flying your KR! Use a 172 for your early IFR
cross-country, then a B33. The KR is not a stable enough platform and doesn't
like a heavy load. It will carry your dreams, just not into the rain. Don't
open the engine. The cam will give plenty of warning if it begins to spall.
Don't add flaps. Finish then plane. It is better to be flying and wishing you
had flaps, than standing in the shop wishing you were flying. One last thought-
the best and most unexpected feature of the KR design is the really kind and
engaged builder-community worldwide. Meet them and fly with them. You will
finish your plane and be a safe test-pilot with their help and encouragement.
Alone it is very hard. regards, Peter

Yes, the KR is a really nice cross country aircraft. However, like many GA
aircraft, and more importantly, like most GA pilots, if you and it are not
IFR rated and current, you will most likely be having big trouble depending
on it for travel on a schedule. IFR is the key to being able to get to
where you need to be at a specific time.

And when it comes to engines, pay attention to Jeff. Don't mess around with
your engine and don't skimp. As he says, it is YOUR ass in the seat.

2015-01-22 Thread Trevor Norman
Good afternoon (at least I believe its day time over there)

I am new to the group, and I wanted to take a couple moments to introduce
myself.

I am Trevor Norman, from Minnesota, and I had recently purchased N42VK from a
guy in California. I am currently with the military and deployed for another
couple weeks. Basically, I'll have some R and leave to burn off at home when
I return and I figure that working on my new purchase would be a wise use of my
time.

I'm a low-time student pilot, with time in Mooney 20J, Seminole, Arrow, and
other various aircraft sleek and high performance aircraft.

I plan on finishing everything up to my instrument rating by the end of
June/early July, and I have to travel to the east coast, so I'm looking at some
help in trying to get the airplane ready for it's trip.

The current state of the aircraft is probably 85-90% complete, I have to clean
up the engine, purchase about $1400 in lights, instruments and a vacuum system,
and finish the fiberglass of the under belly and a wing tip, then it'd be off
to Phase I testing.

Some questions that I have.
The engine is the RevMaster 2100 series engine, it has very low time on it
(basically brand new), but I do not have the manual for it. I have reached out
to RevMaster to purchase a copy, but they have not as of yet returned my email.
So, is there anyone that has a RevMaster 2100 series engine manual that they
have collecting dust that I could purchase?

With regards to cleaning the engine, I was told that the engine has been
sitting for a while, so I'm interested in finding out how available are the
parts, if I find corrosion on the engine? It was held in California for many
years, and the seller stated that the engine does not require an overhaul, but
just needs to be "cleaned up" so I'm going off the assumption that I'll have to
break the whole thing down and inspect it.

While on the subject of engines, I've read somewhere that the RevMaster could
potentially take automotive fuel instead of aviation gas, is this correct? I'm
assuming if so, it'd be the 93 octane fuel, but want to hear from the experts.

I'm looking at adding flaps/spoilers to the aircraft to help manage it on the
approach and landing, what are some suggestions for that? I've seen belly
boards, and flaps, but I'm wondering if spoilers would be of benefit?

Next, I have a contact who is able to provide me some wing tanks, what are some
of the best ways to install the tanks and run the lines?

I was doing some research and some of the common problems associated with the
aircraft is fuel related. What are your experiences with fuel system issues?

As far as inspecting the aircraft, what am I looking for as far as
imperfections in the carbon fiber/fiberglass? Are there easy means of
inspecting it for quality?

And lastly, what kind of advise can you give me? I bought the plane cheap, I
know the resale value is not very good on the aircraft (which is why I'm taking
over someone else's project).

Thanks for your help!

This is the link to the KR2T story. Turbine powered KR2. Not a good ending.

KR> Greetings

2015-01-22 Thread Jeff Scott

OK. Larry knows I'm pulling his leg, but the KR is actually a pretty decent
plane for travel. I know Joe, Mark and a few others would certainly agree with
me.

I would skip the vacuum system. They are heavy as are the instruments. Your
money is better invested into something like a Dynon D1 or D2 or eventually a
glass panel rather than vacuum and gyros.

I'll disagree with Larry Bell here. Tearing down a Revmaster for inspection is
a quick and easy job. I have a personal policy of not flying behind an engine
until I have been intimate with it. I want to know what it looks like on the
inside before I fly behind it.

I think this is true. At least one of our KR flyers (Rob) tells me his
Revmaster runs better on 100LL. I offered him some of my premium Mogas when he
was here in September and he turned me down.

Build a fuel system you understand that is easy to manage. You'll see lots of
ideas on here and everyone thinks their idea is the cat's meow.

Look for bubbles and delaminations. If in doubt, do a ring test on any spot in
question. Take a quarter in between your fingers and strike it gently on the
glass with the edge of the quarter. It should have a solid sound to it. If it
sound like you just hit a rotten watermelon, that spot may have an issue that
needs repaired.

Complete the plane the way you want it. It's your butt that's in the seat.
Make it safe, and resist the temptation to add lots of unnecessary things to
it. They all have weight and all will negatively impact the performance of the
plane. Also, do your best to keep weight forward as you complete the plane.
It is very sensitive to CG issues, especially aft CG problems.

Wow. I'm really bummed to read that. Apparently I have been misusing my KR as
I have had it to both coasts as well as the northern and southern boarders of
the country just in the last 2 years. :o) I've rather kind of enjoyed
traveling in my KR as, weather permitting, I can beat the airlines for time to
roughly half of the country. And now after 18 years of fun I find that it's
not good for travel. :o(
