You think those plans are lacking try the one's I bought in 1973 for the KR 1
four sheets and a green book telling you how to build it.

You're not the first guy to wonder these things, and you won't be the last.
A lot of these planes have been built and flown, despite the poor state of
the plans.  Those plans is the reason I built my website, the first one
devoted to KR construction.   If you look hard enough in the plans notebook
for the KR2, you'll find mention of joining the fuselage sides up to the
vertical stabilizer's aft spar to finish forming the boat.  This is the
width of the fuselage back at the place where the rudder fastens (it's a
tapered piece that's something like 2" wide on average).  Taper the spar
first, and leave the plywood overlapping a bit to provide a gap seal for the
rudder.  So use the farthest aft measurement that's given for a cross member
as your last known point, and then the tailpiece, and the other cross pieces
are just cut to fit.  I'd give better directions, but I'm at work and the
plans are at home.

As for tri-gear, that fits under the same heading as a lot of things...you
don't get the one-sheet plans for it unless you bought the optional parts
themselves from Rand Robinson.  Diehl sold most of the nose gear, and his
instructions are online at
http://www.diehlaero.com/NOSE%20GEAR%20INSTRUCTIONS.pdf .  I think Steve
?Glover at NVAero is now selling that gear.  I'll let him clarify.

There's a lot of guesswork building a KR from those plans, so better get
used to it now...

Back from OSH and looking fwd to the Gathering

My stub wings between the spars will be virtually empty because of the control
system I am building.  I am thinking of putting a small baggage compartment in
each wing or hinge the leading edge and use that as baggage space.  Found
nothing in the archives about anyone doing this so I thought I would ask if
anyone has done it before.  I think the hinged leading edge would be real neat
but maybe not practical.

 Hi Mark:

I was quite impressed with your Wal-Mart landing(driving) lights. However,
after searching their site and visiting four stores, I have yet to turn
them up. Would you by any chance have a stock or part number for them? I
 would much appreciate your help.

 Al Etherington

Hi Al,

Unfortunately, I do not have the part number on them. I bought them from Ron
Frieberger back in 2004 and dont know if he is still on the KR Net or not.
They are fog driving lights which you would mount on a bumper or truck roof.
I see them all the time at car parts stores and even Wal Mart which is where
he bought these. All fog driving lights have a reflector in front of the
bulb which spreads the light beam. You will want to take the case apart and
remove the reflector in front of the bulb. This will give you a spot light
instead of a flood light and will increase the effective range 10 times for
use as a landing light. Somewhere I have a drawing which circulated on the
net which shows how to remove the reflector and it may have had the Mfg and
part number on it. I am going to post this to the net in case Ron is still
out there or maybe someone else will have the drawing I am referring to.

For a long time I've wanted to build a  KR-2, but I didn't have a place to
do
it.  Now, after moving from an  apartment to a house, I've decided the best
way is to build it in my  basement as far as possible.  I have a small
two-car garage, but it's  cold, drafty, and often damp.  The basement is
dry
and heated, with a  ground level door to the backyard, and I have
woodworking
and metalworking  equipment there.

The problem is space.  There's a furnace room in  the middle of the
basement,
and the area where I want to put the assembly  table is 76" wide on one end
and 80" wide on the other.  The KR  manual says the table is made of two
sheets of particle board put end to  end "and cut off to length of table
desired."  But leaving the table  48" wide seems much more than I need and
it
would make it harder to move  around it.  How narrow a table can I get away
with?  (And how  long does it have to be?  My space is plenty long enough
to
build the  boat, but I don't see any point making the table longer than it
needs to  be).

The hard part is going to be getting the boat out the door, which  is
currently 32" wide (though if I take out the door frame I can get it to
get
to 34").  The plans seem to want me to build the tail after the  boat, but
I
don't see why I can't do that last, and without the tail, the  boat turned
sideways can get through the door, maybe even with the wing  spars on.

Finally, I bought my plans awhile ago and have Serial No.  9159 in Book No.
78.  Drawing 1 and Drawing 2 are the May, 1986  release, and the firewall
template is dated February 15, 1981.  Are  these the latest version, and if
not, is there a way to get the later  ones?

I just made two 4x8 tables and bolted together it works great with locking

Mike since no one else has replied directly to your table questions - here's
my take.

The table doesn't need to be any longer that it takes to layout the fuselage
sides - so what-ever that is based on the short or long fuselage. I would
probably make it as wide as the widest part of the fuselage as you will need
that when you start to erect the sides.

The Horizontal stab/Elevator can be saved to last but you will need to mount
the rudder post when you frame the boat. The Vertical Stabilizer is
constructed after the Horizontal/Elevators are mounted.

Hope this helps

2010-11-04 Thread Charles Brown
Morning everyone. I have looked at alot of reports including the NTSB on home
builts and KR's and I found that most accidents could have been avoided. alot
of
people get so hung up in flying that they don't do a good preflight or a post
flight, yes I said post flight. One thing the military aviation teaches is
things
go wrong and in the air is not the time to find out. Don't get in a routine, one
time after flying check flight controls, next time landing gear, prop ( no fun
intended Mark). We build these machine's with pride, at lest I do but we make
mistake's and anything we build will and can brake. Out of all KR's I think
Mark's plane is best because he can remove the turtle deck which make it easy
to
inspect flight control's and ect.Post flight is great as you find problem's and
can fix them, preflight so you are sure your safe. Some pilot's want to fly so
bad they say I will fix it when I get back, problem is sometime's they don't
come back, get the point. KR's are very safe aircraft if well mantained so let's
build, let's fly and be safe don't take chance's.

Helens and Mt Adams put a dot in the middle and you find Randle. closest
airports are Packwood or Morton. Sense I am in the middle of Washington I can
travel any direction. I would realy appreciate it. Happy 4th of July.

If y'all haven't seen Roberts photos at
http://s449.photobucket.com/albums/qq219/rkpsk1/ , it's a real treat.
Anybody hoping to win any KR awards at the KR Gathering would be well
advised to do your best this year, because next year Robert's plane is going
to win them all.  That is one gorgeous airplane and it's not even painted
yet.  In fact, I don't think I'd paint any of the wood, since it's perfect
like it is.  The whole thing is just plain awesome.  I plan to fly up and
see it in person once my plane is back together.  He forgot to mention the
Harley he was riding when he showed up, also perfect.  I was afraid he
wouldn't have much to do while he was there, but he ended up entertaining
everybody there...

KR>Rotisserie

2010-06-25 Thread Charles Brown
Glenn I went done to Harber freight bought a couple cheap 750 lb engine stands
for $35.oo each bought some steel to telescope up and down for ground clearance
that way it can be used for fusaluge, wings and auto or aircraft engines its a
hole lot cheaper than $1100.oo for a rotisserie. If you need I can do drawing
of how its done.

The time for (re)building N1333A has begun. The shop is almost cleaned and
organized enough to start. The first thing I see that I am going to need to do
is to build a rotisserie to put her onto so I can move her around and position
her for easy repair. I will be removing the rudder and elevators. The
turtledeck will be removed also. the the engine is off, the mount will be
removed or kept on as required by the rotisserie (preferably removed). Does
anyone have any plans, sketches, dimensions, and/or suggestions for the
rotisserie? Thanks

KR> RE: vw engine cases

2010-05-28 Thread Charles Brown
I will not use a old style case, if you use a old VW case make sure it is a
daul relief case and use the high volume oil pressure relief springs never use
a case without it being line bored wether for aircraft or car if going bigger
than 1835 then for sure use a new case I prefere the aluminum case it is great
insurance, Up in the air is not the time to second guess if done right. Vw
engine are great engines but don't ever try to cut corners it will bite u never
use a used or reground crank the price differents is not worth it.

Buy a new one if you can.  There are only certain numbers on the old ones
that can be used.  When I had to do this many years ago, the only ones I
could find were the bad ones.  In fact, the case that cracked, turned out to
be one of the bad ones.

Has anyone had any experience rebuilding a VW with a used case?

Have you had any issues with it?

Did you line bore it?

Or am I better off with a new case?

On 14 April at 2:10 pm, N774A hit the ground at about 75 mph after I
realized it was falling out of the sky.  I had flown a reasonably decent
pattern and was headed right for the numbers but the airspeed read 80.  As I
applied power to arrest the sink, I hit the ground and bounced.  When I hit
again, the gear collapsed and I became a sled.  Stayed on the runway and,
even though everything that wasn't fastened down flew all over the cockpit,
I was not injured.

The prop, of course, is kindling.  The cowl was scuffed up slightly, the
belly from the main spar forward was also significantly scuffed, and the
firewall came loose on the top and sides.  The fuel tank front mount kept
the firewall on the plane.

The landing gear was essentially undamaged.  It did not collapse, as in --
retract.  What happened was that all 8 of the nuts on the gear leg attach
bolds were stripped off.  That allowed the gear legs to fold sideways up
into the wing which prevented a second bounce.  Of course, the top skin on
each wing was pierced on both sides of the main spar.  If I was so inclined,
I could bolt the gear legs back to the spring, replace a tire that got
scuffed, and get on with the wood and glass repairs.  However, I am not so
inclined so I am now in the market for a set of Diehl tricycle gear, plus
wheels and brakes, and a prop.  A project, on the gear might be interesting.
If anyone has something you think I could use, please contact me off the net
at ankerst...@embarqmail.com.

For the record, N774A is a single place KR 2 with a 1835 cc VW. (ran good
but the revflow carb is too big)  It had a Hegy 52x44 prop which was at
34-3600 rpm for the whole flight.  Empty weight is 587 lbs and gross is 950.

I remember speeds from 65 to 135 while I orbited HAO for about 40 minutes,
trying to find the courage to try to get down.  Remember, I was doing taxi
tests
and was no where near ready to fly --- obviously.  I pretty much wasted all
that
time being very gentle trying to keep it in the sky when I should have been
doing
some actual test flying.  Anyway, back to work again.  I have long thought,
and now I'm
convinced, that these are sturdy little birds.

With a couple miracles, we will be at the next gathering.  Without miracles,
I'll drive.

This is Charles Brown I hope this mike guy has a lot of money because Jeannette
can sue the pants off this guy for copy right violation I can't beleave people
can be so stupid not to check copy right laws before trying  something like
this mike guy has done. Im sorry but I hate people like that it irritates me to
know end. I haven't started on my KR because when Ken sent my KR 1 plans in
1974 they were not numbered I still have the original green covered book with
the 3% angle prop hub for $ 25 so you know they are old plans.

My reading from the Copyright Office website indicates the KR plans
copyright may expire on December 31, 2047.
http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap3.html
Copies of the plans sets were sold prior to 1978 and would be considered
as commercialized intellectual property with a repose of 70 years from
January 1, 1978.  Rand Robinson Engineering would be the legal owner of
that intellectual property.
The previous assertion by Mike, that the KR series plans are in the
public domain, is wishful thinking on his part.

2009-05-22 Thread Charles Brown
What is going on, my enternet has been down for a day and I come on and her
things going on, is someone trying to down load plans without  buying them or
something. If so I agree with you I have had my plans sence 1974 and really
need to update them. someone wants something for nothing I don't agree. Ken
Rand was a great man have enough respect to buy the plans the right way.

KR> airplanes,designs

2009-03-08 Thread Charles Brown
I have been reading what you guys been talking about own designs and airplanes,
KR-2s
When I was In highschool I had talked to Ken Rand about building a twin
engine as I have been
always in love with twin engine aircraft, I bought a set of plans from Ken way
back in mid 70's and still
have them.I think I paid $25 KR-1 then I joined the Army and helped a friend
build one then I got the
news Ken was killed. I was stationed in Alaska. He kind of inspired me in
aviation,I was a crazy teen-
ager. I have helped build a couple KRs.I was told that someone had built a twin
KR but was unstable
don't know if true or not.
I have worked on a design to build a twin KR with 1835 vw engines. If not for
Ken I would not got in to aviation, the love he had for aviation I can't
explain, I only talked to him three times but great talks, I am still
hooked on the twin KR idea. I stayed in the Army for eight and half years to
learn what I could about aviation
I was a mechanic on CH47 Chinook helicopters then worked for Alaska Airlines
(sea tac), I worked for Columbia Helicopters and Everts Airfuel ( Cargo
express) in Fairbanks Ak, I worked on DC-6s, C46s,
and a old Caribue aircraft I love old roundy round engine wasp 2800s and 2000s.
Well I have talked enough.
My name is Charles L. Brown. you all have a great day.
