KR> Jabiru Engine+Diehl Gear
HI Garrie, You must live close to me!! I'm in Gladstone QLD. If you go to the SAAA web site and then look in the classifieds you will see someone in Victoria has a KR2 in boat stage for sale, it has Diehl gear and a host of other things for sale that he won't separate, but it may be worth a call to him. Incidentally I'm looking for an engine too I was, and still may use the EJ22 Subaru engine, but I'm concerned with the weight !!! KR> Trigear
I own a Grumman Tiger and let me say the nose wheel is only the weak link if the torque tube is delaminating !!! There is nothing wrong with the design, and the aircraft should be treated the same as any other tri undercart aircraft. Most of the prop strikes are when the glue holding the torque tube together fails and the whole assembly fails. Gav Australia - Original Message - From: "Colin & Bev Rainey" To: "KRnet" Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 2004 8:11 PM Subject: KR> Trigear > I have to agree with Larry and say that any trigear setup can be collapsed. One must remember to protect the nose gear by continuing the back pressure increase throughout the flare until the nose settles on its own, or damage can occur. The Grumman Tiger, Cheetah, Traveler, and Lynx all have the same type nose wheel, and it fairs them well, but is the weak link. This is where I have preached that one NEEDS to learn how to fly into ground effect first, and then establish a landing attitude followed by a gradual flare as the airspeed bleeds off. All too often pilots get in a hurry to get into the flare attitude on the descent, and they are very near the stall when they enter ground effect. They try to continue flaring only to find too little airspeed, and too little elevator left to flare, so the nose drops as they drop crashing to the runway, smashing into a 3 point which overloads the nose gear. Descend down final, round out into ground effect and pause as you fly in ground effe > > Colin & Bev Rainey > KR2(td) N96TA > Sanford, FL > crain...@cfl.rr.com > or crbrn9...@hotmail.com > http://kr-builder.org/Colin/index.html > ___ > to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to krnet-le...@mylist.net > please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. KR>Spar questions
Hi All, Wow I've had a big day I got about 10 hours done on my 2S. Horizontal stab glassed on the top, Spars fitted and ready for gluing, it's amazing how much time can be spent checking and double checking for level. Cockpit floor made and ready to glue in once I establish where my rudder pedals are going to be. Foam cut for the space under the floor, and a heap of other little time consumers. A couple of questions. Up until now I've been using Epiglass Everdure for a timber sealer, this needs several coats to fully seal the timber which is very time consuming. What are most people using for a sealer ? I surmised that I could just use 1 coat of resin to cover everything , How would this be? resin only needs a little sanding and it can be glued on with the west system but the Everdure can't be glued over. 1 bid doesn't look like it's strong enough on the horizontal stab!! Is this right? am I reading the plans correctly ? I thought 2 layers would be better but that's just me, I really don't know much about it. I hope to glue my spars in tomorrow. What is the best way to get glue into all those joints while the spar is in there?? seems to me there is a lot of filling to do (well not a lot really) but seems the easiest way I can think of is to just wipe the glue in with my fingers and try to get full penetration. I've had them lying around in the workshop for a bout 6 months now with no signs of surface rust !! does this 4130 steel rust or not? If I do paint them am I right in assuming that I don't paint the side that gets floxed to the spar ? On another subject, there is a guy here in Australia who is casting main gear leg attach brackets and nose gear forks !! If I buy a fork from him and fabricate a nose strut to suit the prop I'm going to use, what size tube should I use for the nose strut? I have tried two kinds and cannot remember what they are, but it seems that the best one, although, maybe a little heavy, is the one sold for the Long EZ. If I remember correctly, it is 5.5 oz bid glass. I was going to look in my plans for you, but it is not in yours, I guess it won't be in mine either. It also is difficult to estimate the amount of glass you would use and what kind to use and how much resin to use, because there are so many variables. What if you bought all pre-molded parts and were using wing skins, how much and what kind would you need. People use all different kinds of resin, we are using AeroPoxy, but will probably switch to West Systems for the cowling mold, but if I bought a cowling that would fit, I would not need any of that stuff. Also, you will want to only but what you will need in the next 6 months or so, because you want your resin to always be fresh. KR>Engines
Hi All, Well the age old question, Which engine to use for my KR2S??? Here in Australia we have an engine manufacturing facility for light aircraft engines called Jabiru, and from all accounts they are first class engines. This is what I was at first going to use. However the price is fairly high at just over $18000 AUD for a six cylinder 3300 cc model producing 120 hp. At only 178 lbs in weight they are ideal power plants though a little out of my price range !!! My question is if I go for a VW engine what size do I need for over 100 hp, and can I get a kit of accessories for it, and build an engine from the wrecking yard to fit them to??? Which model VW do I need? What about Corvair engines for Australia ( we don't have them here ) How would I get one over here and what's available to help me build one??? How much are they second hand, and are there any left of the correct model for modification?? Hows the weight of an O200 conti compare to these options ? Gav - Original Message - From: "Brian Kraut" To: Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2003 11:19 AM Subject: KR>VW/Zenith carb > I have been doing a lot of engine adjustments and running on the ground this weekend. I have a 2180 VW with a single mag and a Zenith carb. I believe that I have the idle and running mixture set correctly, but I am having a problem when I advance the throttle fast. If I push in the throttle slowly (three to four seconds from idle to full speed) everything is fine. If I go any faster than that it will start to cough and it will die if I do it fast enough. > > I had never seen this problem before on this or any other aircraft engine. This may just be because I always advance the throttle smoothly and slowly and this was the first time I have tried ramming it in. This may be normal for a plane without an accelerator pump. I tried adjusting the idle mixture richer and leaner, but it doesn't really seem to affect the way it reacts to a fast throttle movement. > > Can anyone else with this engine and throttle combination comment on this? > > ___ > see KRnet list details at http://www.krnet.org/instructions.html
