KR> visit
It was my pleasue to welcome Mark Langford and Joe Horton at my new home and hangar today. We had a few hours together and toured the home and hangar, enjoyed the sunshine of a beautiful spring Tennessee day, the view of the mountains, and had a good meal. Some residents and construction workers were awed by the flybys. Mark and Joe, come back anytime and bring more friends with you. We will have a KR and Corvair flyin once I'm setteled into the house. KR> Sun-N-Fun KR Dinner
I have volunteered to set up the KR dinner at Sun-N-Fun. Here is what I have arranged so far, nothing is in concrete yet so changes can be made if necessary. I'm sure many of you will be going to Dave Strouds BBQ on Friday so I set it up for Thursday evening at 6:30 PM at Hooters on Florida Ave. This will be very informal gettogether just like last year. Everyone will pay for their own meal and drinks and tthere is no cover charge for the room. If you plan to attend please RSVP to me off net at kr2coo...@embarqmail.com Jack Cooper -- Jack Cooper Mosheim TN

Its getting very exciting to see things come together with the house and hangar. One of my neighbors said my hangar was too nice to be a hangar. Can't wait to move a KR into it but right now it would just be in the way. Also I want to keep the workers busy building a house, not drooling over an airplane. KR> Dremel
This is my favorite dremel like tool also from harbor freight or as I sometimes refer to them horable freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47869 Its air drive, light weight smaller diameter and easier to adjust speed. I recently bought a hammer drill from them and had to return it within a week because of a broken shaft. I exchanged it and also broke that shaft within a very short time. I have bought a lot of tools there knowing that they are not the highest quality tools but most are acceptable quality for a hobbiest, but not for a professional. KR> tow vehicle
John My son used to have a Suburban so I sent your problem to him and here is his reply. Jack Cooper I'd tell him to check the EGR valve. If it is fine when the engine is cool, and then once the engine heats up, it won't idle, or idles rough, and then dies at an idle, but with foot on gas pedal, it will go, then the EGR valve should be suspect. It would also explain why the truck did fine on the test drive. 1989 shouldn't be an electronic EGR valve, should be off of vaccuum still. So, I'd check the EGR valve sticking open, or a vaccuum leak somewhere. The EGR valve stuck open will act like a big vaccuum leak, and that is what it sounds like to me. - "John Gotschall" <johng...@comcast.net> wrote: > Not only KR related, but here goes: > > I tested the coolant temp probes, no faults there. Mark I have also seen a strut with a gussett welded in the same area. Gene Byrd had his welded with a gussett because he was landing on a rough grass strip and his strut was bending. He later replaced the strut but he considered the gussett as a stopgap measure until his new strut came in. Was your strut showing any signs of bending? When I thought it was clean I filled it with clean oil and let it set overnight and when I poured the oil out there was still a lot of scale coming out. Any suggestions on how to clean it. KR> Crankshaft threading
Just wanted to let everyone know that it is not impossible to thread the crank for the safety shaft after the crank has been nitrated. Mike Hyers recommended a local machine shop which caters to industry, (not an automotive machine shop). I told them that the crank had been nitrated but he was not concerned by that as he would not be using a conventional tap. I do recommend that the crank be threaded prior to nitrating as it can be done cheaper and easier but it is not impossible to thread after nitrating. Jack Cooper kr2coo...@earthlink.net Fayetteville. KR> video
I was one of the original Nap of the Earth instructors pilots at Ft. Bragg so I have a lot of experience flying with skids in the trees. The area we flew in were well very well mapped and reckoned for wires and power lines and the helicopters we were flying had wire cutting devices. Wires are your greatest hazard to low level flying and you should never attempt flight as low as seen in the video without first checking for wires. Many wires can be almost invisible until you are on them. You will usually see power poles before you see the wires, but I have seen wires string across roads and rivers from tree to tree so poles will not always be an indicator. Low level flight is a thrill but if you are going to attempt it do it safely. After flying a student for two hours NOE we would go to McKall Army Airfield for refueling. We would terminate the lesson by approaching the runway at 50 feet AGL and 90 knots, Roll the throttle to engine idle and do a low level touch down autorotation. I can't believe the Army paid me to have so much fun. KR> HINGES
Chris I used rod end bearings for the elevator hinge. When I started to install them I looked for some conical washers to use on each side of the bearing because that was what I was used to seeing on the rod ends on helicopter tail rotor pitch change links. The rod ends on the KR elevator will never be subject to the stresses and forces of a tail rotor so I forgot about the conical washers. I have never seen a broken rod end and believe me I have inspected many on preflight and maintenance inspections. We routinely replaced them for normal wear but not for failure. Not saying that they wont fail but I don't think it is anything to worry about on the elevator. I used 5 on my elevator. I should also mention that my KR has never flown. I would have thought that if enough were used on the control surface, say 6 or 7 for the elevator and four say for the rudder, then failure would not be an option, and what I am told is an old wives tail. > I also want some clarification on hinge bolt holes, the hinge half on the fixed portion of the surface, ie tailplane, has bolt holes diagonally opposing, while on the hinge half fixed to the movable surface, ie elevator, the plans show two bolts separated vertically only, am I correct in what I say, I would like to make doubly sure I am right because it takes ages to get another piece of wood if I drill in the wrong place! KR> nice day-visit/service ceiling
In the late 1968 or 69 I took a normaly asperated Piper Apache up to 20,300 . Tho owner of the plane had just installed a large camera in the back seat area and was using it for aerial surveys and wanted to see how high it would go.We had oxygen and were up there for about an hour with the mixtures just about back to the shutoff and making very gentle turns for fear of stalling. That day was the first picture with the airlpane and camera over Valdosta GA. at 20300. This same plane made the aerial surveys of Disney World before they started construction of Disney World. As with most any experimental aircraft a few problems occur. Question? Is the cg range for Dan Deihl wing skin wings the same as for the standard KR-2 wings? N880AB's cg falls within the limits for the standard KR-2, however my KR feels tail heavy. I am unable to establish a true stall due to the uncontrolled pitching up of the wings prior to stall. It feels as if the horizontal stab and elevator are stalling prior to the wings. This happened during the first stall approach and a stall approach will not happen again until the problem is solved. Has anyone experienced this? Anyone have a thought as to WHY. KR> Check list usage
I agree with Colin on the checklist but would like to add some military experience. As an instructor pilot in the Army, one thing we were taught and ask on every evaluation after becoming an IP was,"What is the normal reaction to an emergency?" The answer is "to act quickly and accurately within the limits of training." Irrational actions such as panic may require further evaluation and/or training. With this said, how you react to an emergency will reflect your training and preparedness. In many emergency situations you will not have time to reach for and read a checklist so you should memorize certain steps for engine failure or control lockup, open canopy, or anything you can think of that require immediate action. In military checklist immediate action steps were in bold print and had to be committed to memory. The first priority in any emergency is to maintain aircraft control. I like Mark Langfords approach to engine out emergency, flip one switch and this eliminates most problems associated with ignition and fuel so if this doesn't eliminate the problem, get ready to land. One quick war story. I was in the front seat of a Cobra Helicopter on a beautiful spring day. The Captain in the back seat was on the controls hovering over trees awaiting further instructions from out scout helicopter. I was sitting there bored with the slow moving mission and was yawning and about to fall asleep when suddenly I heard the transmission noise pitch level change. I was suddenly fully alert, took control of the aircraft, started flying forward, (it takes less power to fly forward than to hover, especially out of ground effect) and confirmed that we were loosing power by checking the dual tachometer, and checked the throttle to make sure it was full on position. (in turbine helicopters with the throttle in the full on position the fuel control and governor then control the output of the engine according to the position of the collective.) The back seat pilot had unconsciously reduced the throttle while hovering taking authority away from the fuel control and governor which caused a loss of rotor RPM, a very critical situation in a helicopter. I recognized a problem by knowing what my helicopter sounded like, confirmed I had the problem by the tach and took action that may be necessary if it were only a partial power failure and we may be able to continue to fly with partial power, and solved the problem in about 2 or 3 seconds. I'm still amazed that I acted so "quickly and accurately" that day. BTY the Captain in the back seat did not know what had happened. I was able to react to this emergency because I had committed some critical action emergency procedures to memory. Jack Cooper > [Original Message] > From: Colin Rainey <brokerpilot9...@earthlink.net> > To: <kr...@mylist.net> > Date: 11/12/2005 10:20:53 PM > Subject: KR> Check list usage > > I went to the Corvair College on Friday and met with Jack Cooper, Mark Langford, Bill Clapp, his friend (sorry forgot the name), and later saw Bob Lester who is doing much better, though in his words alittle shorter, Glenda McElwee, and the hangar gang. While there I talked to alot of prospective builders about the assembly, and merits of some of the new design features compared to older stuff, and had several discussions about flying and flight skills, specifically concerning the KR. Here are some thoughts, prompted by Mark Jones' post of his flight: > > First off, I have posted a 2 simple checklists, one for "normal" flight, and one for emergency flight, on Dan Heath's web page. If you don't use them, make some of your own, but PLEASE use ONE! It is a proven fact that our mental capacity deteriorates rapidly with the stress of something going wrong. Checklists are so that you can focus on just flying the plane and not have to rely on memory for troubleshooting, or proper response to a given problem. Laminate them, and keep them IN THE PLANE at all times. It is regulatory for certified planes to have their operating manual in the aircraft during each flight. Part of your preflight includes checking for this manual and the airworthiness certificate, and registration. > > Second, once you have the checklists, get in your plane and practice using them, ON THE GROUND. We in teaching call it chair flying. Pretend you are going out to fly and rehearse EVERY procedure, no matter how well you know it. You will check the accuracy of your checklists, and you will begin developing a routine that will save your life. If you find that something has been omitted from your emergency or normal checklist, then don't fly until you correct your checklist. The Private Pilot Practical Test Standard has a section right in the beginning that discusses how the test is to be conducted, and one thing it mentions specifically is checklist usage. Not using a checklist to confirm that the pilot has perfor

Another way to honor a fellow KR flyer would be a flyover during the grave side service with the family's permission of course and assuming there is a grave side service. If my KR were flying I would not mind flying from NC to FL to honor him in this way. I have seen fly bys at graveside services before with a missing man formation and it seemed to be meaningful to the family of the deceased. KR> tailwheels
"If you want to improve your piloting skills, learn and master tailwheels." "If you master a tailwheel aircraft you can fly anything.." "A tail wheel aircraft has definite advantages over nose draggers." "We can do something that nosedraggers can't and are proud of it." Give me a break guys. Flying tailwheels is another set of skills like flying instruments, but if you never go into a cloud what good does it do you? Any CFI will tell you that you really learn to fly when you start teaching others to fly, so, to improve your skills why not become a CFI. To get a commercial ticket and instrument and multi engine rateing you will learn additional skills and become a better pilot. Why not get Commercial helicopter license with instrument radiating and become a instructor pilot in helicopters and an instrument examiner so that you can teach and evaluate other pilots skills. Why not learn close formation flying. Your answer probably is I don't need all that for the type of flying I do. Been there, done all that, but I don't need a tailwheel for the type of flying I do. KR> Rear Starter
Just to set the record straight, I removed the rear starter from my engine because of a decision I made sometime after Mark Langfords crank broke. There was some talk that the rear starter may have played a role in the breakage due to the harmonics. That has been dispelled as a contributing factor now but during that time I made the decision to make my engine as close as possible a William Wynne duplicate so I ordered William's front starter setup. I talked to William and he told me that he did not think that the rear starter was not a contributor to the breakage and gave me the opportunity to cancel my order. My answer was that I had made the decision and I'm standing by it. An expensive decision, yes, but who knows more about making a Corvair fly than William. I'm still thinking about nitrating the crank. BTY, that starter has started my engine on William's test stand at CC#8. Jack Cooper kr2coo...@earthlink.net

I have just put up a new page about how to and not to install a canopy. I need a little help with an overheating problem on my 94 Chevy Astro. It has 207K miles and runs good but recently I have been over temping. I had the heater core replaced about 2 months ago and started having the problem shortly after. I have replaced the pressure cap, thermostat, fan clutch, removed the thermostat, flushed the radiator with a 10 min flush, replaced the water pump and removed the radiator and flushed it with a water hose. The radiator is only about 2 years old. I'm running out of ideals and money. Can anybody suggest something else to check prior to replacing the radiator. My brother was showing me his knife collection last week and came to one knife and said this is what many firefighters and rescue personnel use. When I checked it out I decided this would make a good break out tool so he gave it to me. Check it out on ebay item no. 7161343120 It seems to have a strong enough blade to punch through a canopy or even the plywood. the blade also has serrations for cutting seatbelts and is easy one hand operation. The handle also has a hole which could be used to attached to the airplane in an area where you can reach it and will not go flying away in a crash. KR> Todds Canopy for Sale?
Yes, I have a clear Todd's canopy for sale, but it has one problem, an approximately 10" crack up the left side. That was the loud crack sound followed by very loud crying everyone heard yesterday. I'm sure it was heard by everyone east of the Mississippi.. It is still echoing in my head but Todd has eased my pain by selling me another at a discounted price. Thanks Todd. The canopy may still be useful for someone building a Dan Heath type of canopy. If interested in a cheep Todd's canopy with a crack, email me. I'll send some pictures. KR> fire control in the engine comparetment.
If I recall correctly the Huey had a engine compartment fire warning system that was simply a wire that would ground if the insulation was melted off of it then activate a light in the cockpit. Simple and reliable. I was in Memphis TN in January and visited the local EAA hanger where I meet a Mr Flowers (Can't recall his first name) and looked over his airplane. I noticed a large fire bottle behind the seat and ask about it. He had a tube from the fire bottle to the engine compartment with 4 nozzles in the engine compartment and a handle to activate the extinguisher. When I returned home I got my Kit Plane magazine out of the mail there was an article on that same airplane. I don't keep my magazines so I can't give any more details on it but maybe someone still has the mag. He said he had bought the fire system from an auto supply which caters to the racing industry. I have checked Jegs and Summit websites and haven't found it. They suggested a Halon fire extinguisher in the cockpit area be plumbed with a hose into the engine compartment and be delivered into the throat of the air supply into the carburetor. I have been reading recent post and archives about removing the engine driven fuel pump and going with dual electric pumps. I'm also considering not using my header tank and using only wing tanks. I was really having one of those YeeH moments, as it was as smooth as glass up there. I was having the time of my life. Then, all of a sudden, over the radio, I hear this voice say "Mark, look over your left shoulder". I did, and there was Joe Weber in his KR sitting off my left wing tip. What a beautiful sight. Joe had heard me reporting my positions as I was test flying close to Hartford airport. Knowing where I was, he decided to sneak up behind me. What a blast we had flying loose formation with each other. I really enjoyed it when he was out front and I was following him. Kind of made me feel like a fighter pilot. Any how, Joe had been on my left wing tip for only a few minutes when all of a sudden something hit my prop. I immediately radioed Joe and told him I had a bird strike. He acknowledged that he had seen something and I immediately turned to the airport. Joe in turned pulled up beside me to check for damage on my stabilizers. He reported to me all looked ok. I could not detect any abnormalities either in flight characteristics or engine performance. Landing back at the airport was normal. Upon exiting the plane and checking it over, I found no indication of a bird, such as feathers or blood but I did find the front part of my spinner was gone. The spinner had separated from the aircraft and struck the prop being thrown up and over the top of my plane. It did absolutely no damage except for a small scratch on the prop. The contributing factor to this event was the lack of a front bulkhead spinner. Do not fly without one. I am just waiting on some farmer to show up on the news tonight with this strange looking piece of alien spaceship that fell in his field. After that bit of excitement, Joe and I then went to the local restaurant and Joe bought me lunch. I now owe him one. When we got back to the airport we went flying again and he took air to air photos of my plane. YEHA A > I am now a true KR pilot. Does that mean I have to sing at this years gathering? Joe Weber flew in from southwest Wisconsin to witness the event. He even got the take off on video (which I have viewed at least 20 times since I have been home). The KR flew better than I ever expected. Take off and climb out were smooth as glass and absolutely no porpoising. I had intended to stay in the pattern and make one circuit and land but the plane felt so good that I made two circuits around the airport then left the pattern and headed north of the airport. My carb is an Ellison EFS2 which is a little too small for the Corvair but still yielded me a cruse at wide open throttle of 144 mph with the Sterba 56 x 64 prop I have. My static rpm is 2650 but I can not tell you my cruise rpm yet as I forgot to look. CHT temp at cruise was dead on 300°, oil temp at cruise was 180°, oil pressure at cruise was 50 psi, exhaust temp was around 1200° (I did not write that down but called it out to Joe down on the ground). KR> weak link
Doug Rupert said "If there is one weak link it has to be the WAF's as they have stayed the same from day one." I had the opportunity to see Gene Byrds KR after his crash, I have many of his parts on my KR. Pictures of his crash at http://jackandsandycooper.com/byrdcrash.html . All the WAFs looked good but on one side the rear spar the bolts through the WAF (that attach the wings) was sheared and the center spar was split through the bolt holes. You can see the damage the wings sustained at http://www.jackandsandycooper.com/leftwing.html and http://www.jackandsandycooper.com/Rightwingdamage.html Jack Cooper kr2coo...@earthlink.net
