KR> Tire Pressures

2016-11-11 Thread Ken Hurley
The #1 problem with tires (any tire) is low air pressure. My father-in-law
had a tire shop. After learning that and driving over 500,000 miles, I've
had 2 flats! Learn how to land and that solves the bouncing problem.

KR> Great plains

2016-07-15 Thread Ken Hurley
Don Grow and Art Box are the owners of Great Plains. Founder Steve Bennett
sold to Marty Roberts, who has sold the business to Don and Art. They are
located in Afton, OK. I have been to their shop, so I know they are up and
running. Maybe not as smooth as they would like but still up and running.

Don, Art, and Marty will be at Oshkosh (they won't have a booth this year)
but Marty will have his 5th wheel and that will be the meeting area for
Great Plains.

Here is the web site for their company:
http://www.greatplainsas.com/
http://www.greatplainsas.com/scorder.html

Great Plains Aircraft
Supply Co.

Tel 402 493 6507

info at greatplainsas.com

Even though Marty isn't a partner he is still involved with Great Plains.
Marty, my friend Mike Arnold and I took one of my VW motors to GP and we
re-built my 1835.

I think you'll be pleased with the new owners, especially when the rough
spots get smoothed out. They are expanding their inventory and getting the
right people in the right places.

I hope this info helps. I'll continue to do business with them in the
future!

KR> Ballast weight installation

2015-05-12 Thread Ken
Hi Jeff

That is exactly the point I was aiming to yesterday. The addition of a
single pound in the tail would require perhaps five times more in the
nose due to the differences in distance from the CG to the tail than the
the distance from CG to the nose. It is quite likely the balance weight
on the elevator is good to have but unnecessary for the KR-2 since much
of it's top speeds have shown that most of the KR-2 have exhibited
little or no concern.

Adrian Carter and I were both building our own KR-2 at the same time in
Calgary and we were always concerned with how to keep our projects
light. That needs to remain the principle target with the KR-2. I am
getting close to finishing my plane many years after Adrian's. I
haven't commented on anything over the years but perhaps I should rather
than just reading.

Thank you

KR> Kr2

2010-11-28 Thread Ken Yellen
Hey gang, I sold my KR2 at the boat stage back around 1983. The spars were
signed off. At the time, I lived in Buena Park, California, almost next to
the Fullerton airport. Would the buyer of that plane be on this list, and
did he finish it?

KR> Whirlwinds

2010-08-22 Thread Ken Henderson
I fly out of KALM in Alamogordo, NM, alt.4200, DA usually 6000 and UP. We have
a lot of whirlwinds, dust devils we call 'em. These things can extend 1000 ft.
or more into the atmosphere and pack a nasty surprise for the unaware or
unsuspecting pilot. They are like mini-tornados with a top of 200 ft. or more
in diameter. That is the "visible" top that can be seen from the airborne dirt,
the affected area is much larger. I remember reading that the wind velocity can
be 100 mph or more at the top.
I can remember as a kid running into these things to get to the "eye", and
yes there is an "eye", but it is small and hard to keep up with on foot. Of
course, the "devils" are smaller and slower on the ground than they are at
flight level.
While these things can be unsettling at altitude, they can be disastrous
during the takeoff or landing. If there is no available loose dirt, these
things can be damn near invisible with the only clue being the movement of
ground cover. Imagine a sudden 360 degree circular crosswind of about 25 mph or
more gathering you up as you get light. That's what I think Mike experienced.
If you're flying in the west these babies are an occupational hazard. AOPA
website probably has some info on this but the best advice is "see and avoid".

KR> Spar vs. Capstrip spruce stock

2010-04-01 Thread Ken Henderson
Thanks for the advice Jeff, Roger, Oscar, and Joe. As you may have figured out,
wood is not my most knowledgeable subject. I read "sparcap" in the instructions
and assume they would be made from capstrip. Very bad assumption. You guys
saved me a bunch of money and time and possibly prevented me building something
that was not as good as it should be.
Joe, sorry about the "hokey" crack. I wonder if the mod was an attempt to
enable builders to use the wood they already had in the kits? I'm sure that it
is safe and airworthy or it wouldn't be there. I plan on using the 5048/45
airfoil so yes, I am building a different center spar. When I downloaded the
templates and had them printed I noticed in the fine print the measurements
needed if eliminating the foam extension. Since I am building the outer spars
why not make them one piece I thought. BTW-I live in a small town and we don't
have an Insty-Prints, etc. so I took the airfoil template pdf. file to the
local print shop. Said it would take a week and cost $30. I was going by
Staples and noticed they had a print department. Less than half a day and cost
me $7. As always, your results may vary.

KR> Spar vs. Capstrip spruce stock

2010-03-30 Thread Ken Henderson
All,
Should have asked this as well. If capstrip is unsuitable for the wing
spars is it also unsuitable for the spars used in the horizontal and vertical
stabilizers? If so, not a problem as I will calculate width needed including
kerf loss, order 5/8" spar stock, and rip them myself. Please excuse my
ignorance. This wood is costing me a small fortune and I want to make sure I
get what I need. Thanks, Ken

KR> Spar vs. Capstrip spruce stock

2010-03-30 Thread Ken Henderson
All,
Still trying to get my Aircraft Spruce wood order right and I have a few
questions. Is capstrip suitable for use as spar and longeron material? In their
online catalog Aircraft Spruce states that their capstrip stock is
"non-structural". Aren't spars considered structural?
The reason for this question is this. For the KR-2S front and rear outer
wing spars I will need (4) 1 15/16" x 1 7/8" x 90" and (4) 7/8" x 7/8" x 91"
pieces of spruce. These pieces are longer than what is supplied in the kit
because I am eliminating the hokey foam spar extensions. I can order 7/8" x
7/8" capstrip material or I can order a piece of spar stock 7/8" x 4" x 91" and
rip my 4 rear outer spars from it if the capstrip material is not suitable but
I can't figure out a way to do the front outer spars. Spar stock is available
in up to 1 1/2" thickness and capstrip is available in up to 1" thickness.
Either path will require a lamination of 2 pieces to achieve the required
thickness unless I can order special thickness spar stock. Any advice?
Thanks, Ken

KR> Plywood

2010-03-16 Thread Ken Henderson
All,
Just bit the bullet and sent a spruce and ply order off to Aircraft Spruce.
I know most of you do business with Wick's but they couldn't supply the spar
stock I needed and California is much closer to NM than Illinois shipping cost
wise.
I noticed they offer ply in 90 degree and 45 degree. I assumed that the KR,
being an "economical" airplane to build, would use the 90 degree. Am I correct
in this?
    Thanks, Ken

KR> fuselage,glass or paint ?

2010-03-09 Thread Ken Nathan
My belief is simple. When one engineers an aircraft you design it to do
exactly the job, anything more and it becomes too heavy to fly and of course
too light it could suffer structual failure.

We're talking "deck cloth" here. Only 1.45 ounces per square yard
plus the small amount of epoxy needed to wet it out. If you don't get
carried away with the epoxy I'm guessing your finish will be as light
as all the filler needed to smooth out the wood for a slick
finish. Why add dead weight to finish the wood when you could be
adding some small amount of strength at the same time for probably
the same amount of weight. Tony Bingelis recommends going that route
and I'm a big fan of Tony. If you're a builder and don't have all
his books (available through EAA) you are missing out on a lot of
good info. I certainly wouldn't recommend covering with something as
heavy as the KR cloth or equivalent.

KR> Grain orientation on Firewall

2010-03-02 Thread Ken Henderson
All,
I have been a lurker for several years as I gathered parts and materials
but am getting close to gluing sticks together. I have poured over builders
websites and old posts, as well as my plans and construction book and have some
questions but I'm going to continue to do some research until I'm smart enough
to know what I need to be asking. However, I have one quick question that has
probably been asked before. I hope you will indulge me. I'm ordering some
spruce and ply and was wondering if the grain orientation on the 5-ply 1/4"
birch ply used on the firewall needs to be vertical or horizontal or does it
matter. Yes, I know plywood doesn't technically have a grain. I'm talking about
the two outer surfaces or plys. Thanks for the help. Ken

KR> BNC connectors

2008-12-22 Thread Ken Linder
Do you need the Male or Female side? I might have a few male BNCs around
here.

FWIW, IMHO, the twist-on BNC connectors are good for almost nothing. If
possible, get the highest quality connectors you can. Cheap connectors are
rather prone to intermittant problems. I don't like 'em.

Hi Pat,
You can order them from TerminalTown

Radio Shack carries BNC connectors, too, but they are the twist-on,
non-crimp kind which I do not feel are as good.

I'm not anywhere close to this operation yet but since we're on the subject of
foam I have a question. I bought 2 different KR-2 projects for constructing my
airplane. One kit came with a huge (Aprox. 8'x3'x3') box of foam blocks, the
foam kit that RR sells. As close as I can figure, this kit was purchased from
RR in the early '70's. Is this foam still safe to use? It is still in the box
and does not appear to have had much exposure to sunlight, etc.
Also, I have a brand new RR VW motor mount still in the box that a fellow
builder is interested in. I don't have a current price list from RR. Can
someone tell me what they cost now? I want to make this guy as good a deal as I
can but I have no idea what the mount is worth. Thanks, Ken

We're not far from each other... sort of. I'm in Vegas. I know of one

I hope to get out to the airport soon (Boulder City) and look at my new

KR> Radio...

2008-10-12 Thread Ken Linder
Bill,

I am also looking at Vertex radio equipment. I have used Yaesu (Vertex) ham
radios for a while now & pretty much like them. One thing you may want to
do, is wrap the feedline into a coil. Start with 5 or 10 turns & see how
that works. If not, maybe try 20. The coil should have a diameter of about
2 inches, but probably not more than 2.5 inches. Keep the coil as close to
the antenna as possible.

Another possibility is that your coax may be old. Old coax can do funny
things with a signal. Maybe try replacing it. Since you are transmitting
fine, it doesn't sound like a short.

You could also try to wrap the coax in a torrid core.

I have some more ideas. Let me know how that works out, OK? Good luck.

KR> Yokes -vs- Sticks

2008-10-12 Thread Ken Linder
All,

I have been surfing the web for info on yokes -vs- sticks. I've only trained
in a 172, so yoke only for me, so far. NOW, the stick looks unwieldy to me...
probably because I have never flown one.

Several places on the net, most of the ones I found anyway, contain comments
that sticks are better for small aircraft. After looking at several sites
detailing how the KR2 fits together, I would have to say, it may be difficult
to fit a yoke in there. SO...

Is there anyone here with a yoke in a KR2? Is it worth the additional hassles,
skinned knuckles and swear words to have a yoke?

I saw a pic of a KR2 with a yoke (forgot where) and... well, it just didn't
look natural.

Comments anyone?

TIA

if your wondering how to keep your mylar tape from peeling up from fight times
heres a methode i used to do when i was a comercial aircraft painter* after
painting an aircraft we would have to re-placard these were generally
stickers ( just like your tape ) after the placards were applied we would then
paint with a small detail brush clear paint ( urathan or enamel ) arround the
edges** this keeps air and contaminates from working under the tape * if
this works on 747s flying over 400 mph then is should work on a KR flying less
than 200
