KR> Gear alignment: was tail wheel/rudder interconnection

2009-12-23 Thread L. D. Mueller
As always there are opinions to the contrary, as is mine. I had an EAA
Biplane that was almost impossible to keep straight on hard surface. I asked
an Aeronautical engineer about toe-in toe-out gear alignment. His response
was parallel alignment, or slightly toe-out. With a toe-in gear, the weight
is shifted more to the affected wheel and increases the dive, where as a
toe-out wheel will decrease the weight on the tire. --back to my biplane:
the gear had a toe-in alignment, and was my problem. We had the same problem
with a TailWind this summer. Once the toe-in alignment was corrected to
slightly toe-out, the directional control issue disappeared.

"As always, your results and opinions may vary" ;-)

Maybe not an expert but expert info. 1/4 in per wheel is probably minimum
depending on the length and spring of you gear. Works for us on the hornet,
longer gear we use a little more, I'm sure you will get the real low down
from a real professional shortly it seems this net has a very valuable asset

Hi Dan

With regards to your wheel alignment.

Never, ever should you have toe out. TOE OUT IS BAD.
Let me explain (from what I know), a small amount of toe in is required as
when the vehicle is moving forward, any movement (give, spring) in the
suspension (and steering on cars) will result in the wheels pivoting
backwards (every so slightly) and thus the wheels will end up parallel which
is where we want them.

Now with toe out you will find that the vehicle will veer (dive) left or
right and when you correct it, it will over correct. In cars (where I have
most of my limited experience in wheel aligning) toe out makes it hard to
drive a car straight on very smooth flat road, the car keeps wanting to
wander.

Having a toe in of zero will most likely result in toe out when the vehicle
is moving forwards.

Too much toe in will scrub the tyres causing unnecessary wear.

For more detail see may email in the archive
http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp dated 13 Feb 2008 and from
k...@bigpond.com.

My one cents worth (down from 2 cents due to the recession).
As per normal, your results may differ and I'm no expert.

KR> wing airfoils

2009-11-23 Thread L. D. Mueller
Actually, I'm building Little Wing Autogyro. But Joe Weber has talked me
into making it a fixed wing. The fuselage is essentially a 3/4 Cub so it
won't be much of a change over. We're going to use KR composite
construction.

Are you using this airfoil on the KR?

I would use the AS series airfoil if you were, the only other airfoil I
would even consider for the KR is a modified Riblett G37U215 airfoil. It has
a bit more camber than the AS but the AS has a flatter camber line so is
more stable under large changes in CG compared to the Riblett. Just my two
cents worth.

my built short block back. The new refurbished and nitrided crank I bought
for my last rebuild is having to be completely reground from an .010 to a

Anybody have an altimeter I can borrow for 2-3 weeks while mine is off being

repaired? I'll gladly pay shipping both ways. For some reason my

adjustment knob just locked up overnight. Must have been a meteorite hit or

something else that went bump in the night.

Oh, and in the interest of being helpful, my avionics buddy informed me that

foaming and glassing my transponder antenna was not one of my brightest

ideas, as it would change the frequency of the antenna and possibly stress

the transponder. This was pointed out as we tried to figure out why my

transponder doesn't work. We think it's the output transistor, and will

troubleshoot later this week, hopefully. My big push is over at work, so

I'm going to try my best to take afternoons off for about the next two

months. First on the agenda is a spinner, and then intercom, then landing,

nav, and strobe lights, etc. Paint might be in 2008...

KR> Nose Gear question

2008-10-12 Thread L. D. Mueller
You know that sometimes tire pressure will affect nose wheel shimmy. I
hadn't seen that listed anywhere in reference to the shimmy issue.

KR> How to widen and KR2

2008-10-12 Thread L. D. Mueller
Help! I just bought the KR2S that was on Barnstormers in Sparta MI. The
cabin width is 32"? The plane is at the boat stage with both spars in place.
Any ideas of widening this fuse so my wife and I can fly together--without a
complete rebuild? We would need 38" to be comfortable. Or should I put it up
for sale . . . ; - )

And thanks for all the hospitality @ KMVN. We enjoyed all of it--Nancy
especially enjoyed the rides and flying that she got.

I'll be talking with Joe Weber yet tonight--he's a friend of mine.

More ideas anyone?
