KR> RE: Nikasil...
Don't know about the finer points questioned here (like better overall designs, etc...) but I believe BMW cycles went to Nikasil in the 80's (or early 90's) for several reasons. One was weight, but the primary was heat transfer. It seems a lot is lost in the transfer from the linings to the heads, and this process eliminated this issue. I am sure there are many technical papers, patents, etc., for those who wish to dive deeper. Just not sure I need to go that far, but clearly it is the right technology, and while it may be new here, it is proven stuff! Also, I think rough EXTERIORS on castings increase surface area and help with heat dissipation, so smooth may not be good there. On the inside oil flow must be optimized, thus highly polished interiors are usually desired. Marc Lee Winnig mlwin...@hotmail.com (815) 301-5011 Cell and Vonage (801) 749-9460 FAX> I have always wondered about the roughness of the castings of the VW jugs and thought the billet stuff would be better but this information far exceeds what I would have expected. It looks like these jugs answer all of the needs, more power, better heat disapation longer TBO and so on. _ Get the Live.com Holiday Page for recipes, gift-giving ideas, and more. www.live.com/?addtemplate=holiday

In the model airplane world anything with a coating on the cylinder is considered cheap. I think mostly because on model airplane engines they do the block and cylinder in one piece then coat the cylinder to get the hardness needed. It is a very cheap way of building an engine (low parts count), but is very lightweight. I still think of the Nikasil cylinder as a throw away part. It isn't shop rebuildable if damaged and new cylinders will have to be bought. I guess that makes it not so cheap. One web site did claim the Nikasil cylinder is 2-3 times stronger than chrome plated cylinders. KR> RE: BRS on KR2
Thank you both Mark and Robin.I am mostly interested in retro-fit possibilities, though I know before layups is best. As I will be sanding and painting anyway, a few minor mods to allow the straps is a possibility-- not sure... just thinking. If anyone has the diagrams showing the recommended strap routing from BRS, that would be awesome, as it usually takes them several days to reply to such a request. (Please send direct). As for a passenger deploying it at 150MPH... I guess I would hope my passenger briefing would cover that. Anyone stupid enough to do that would likely be tossed out of the plane well before getting to max cruise speeds! KR> Retractable Gear?
My recently acquired and "nearly done" KR2 has retractable gear, which I must assume is "old style". It does, however, have a safety latch to keep it from accidently collapsing due to rough taxiing or just an accidental release, as it take two levers to retract the gear. Anyone know more about this setup? Is it still subject to the same issues? "Hard landings" are, of course a relative term. The example cited seems pretty extreme (a panicked pilot fighting the co-pilot for control). I'd be more interested in more "normal operations" info..Thanks! KR> BRS LIMITATIONS
Once you pull the chute, you are more-or-less at the mercy of the winds, and many other things. The save where the husband had a stroke or whatever and collapsed onto the controls only worked out because his wife waited until they were over open water. A BRS will NOT work in all situations, and the recommendation is to deploy at the slowest possible speed (given other considerations). Where are you at??? Maybe I need to bring my 45 hrs., my KR-2 (not-quite-done) craft, and a couple of my UL's/UL Projects (after I collect them all) to add some fuel to the fire!Sounds like you just stumbled into the wrong hangar! And to think, it looked so promising! Sorry it went that way. I am with you, feel your pain, and I too think you got some real bad advice.I don't want to beat this to death by any means, but I am taking my time, learning to do this right, investing the time and money required, reading a TON (including NTSB reports, "I Learned About Flying From That" (collection of near-fatal mistakes Vol. 3 and the original stories monthly that feed the collectons), "The Killing Zone" about pilots from 100-350hrs. who seem to have a disproportionate share of fatal incidents, and am in NO HURRY to solo or to get my instructor out of the plane! I have discussed buying specific TD's with him, am already flying a TD UL (OK, twice so far), and have his "blessing" for these types of planes. He is confident we can fly her (he can fly it / I can fly it / he can teach me to fly it). He does want me to get with the more experienced TD instructor too, but the TD CFI's Cub is currently undergoing a major overhaul, and students don't fly his other plane!. It is just one more reason why I want my own plane.Learn everything you can wherever you can. Don't close your mind to anything. But take things with the proverbial grain of sand. KR> Picked up the KR2 project in Iowa!!!
Been a busy few days here. Unfortunately, my Mother passed away in NY on Thurs., and I was with her and family there. Funeral was yesterday in Milwaukee. In between I made the trip to Iowa to liberate my KR2 project. Fellow list member Joe Weber met me there-- in fact he beat me there. Turns out he had been there several years back too. The seller is 70, and has flown nearly 50 years. Built a gyrocopter which flew briefly once, but fell victim to reversed controls. He has worked on the plane (on and off) since 1975. Before I had seen her, I asked Joe what he thought, and got the answer I was looking for... He simply looked at me and said... "With a little work, it will fly!"Fuselage is still on my trailer in my hangar... wings and canopy still in my van in the driveway. Can't wait to get working on her. I looked for appropriate tail numbers (like 7507 for the year the plane was started and when it will hopefully fly, but all were taken). Joe mentioned 2007 will be the 35th anniv. of the KR, so I asked to reserve 3507 (X, W, B, C, or D in order), as I guess I will be "building" a 35th Anniversary 2007 KR-- though It does feel a bit like cheating! Please consider this my confession!Marc Lee Winnig _ Express yourself with gadgets on Windows Live Spaces http://discoverspaces.live.com?source=hmtag1&loc=us

KR> Re: Stick and Rudder
AGREED!!! VERY EARLY in my still young student flying "career" I was struggling with many (more) items. Nothing really made much sense. I picked up the book at the suggestion of an EAA Chapter member/officer-- a real "old-timer". He said he learned more from it than any other flying book. When I got to the part about the things which are not intuitive, which the books barely mention and instructors don't really teach... it all started to make sense. (Start with the fact that most of the controls are "mis-labeled" and do NOT due what you would normally think they would, and it just gets worse from there). Our instincts will often kills us.A lot of flying seems to be about learning to do the right thing, when your natural reaction is to do the wrong thing). I now have a different instructor, who knows and loves the book, and my flying is progressing much better. The book is clearly not the only component, but it certainly helped! Also, get the ASA book "Conventional Gear - Flying a Taildragger" by David Robson. It covers techniques, and many specifc makes/models. Help me understand why stall recovery in the Cessna is "release the stick and apply power" but in the Drifter it is "SLAM the stick forward" and apply power! I was under-sticking the Drifter, and over-sticking the Cessna. I now know how (and why) they fly differently. (Cessna is a 172-- not covered in the book, but it was my point of reference/contrast). KR> My Purchase of KR-2 in Iowa! - Wood Prop Question
Sent a bank check for his asking price (overnight courier) BEFORE actually seeing pictures of her! (Pretty sure she is mine!).Got some pictures from his daughter, and she looks like a fine plane. Probably not too much to do, though he has already mentioned the prop needs to go. Perhaps I can use it on my Ultralight Amphib. project (if it is not wood). Ed Sterba it will be! (The Sonerai IIL I came very close to getting was to have a new ES prop.). Thanks for all the good info there. (Both VW engines). One wood prop question... I hear they don't like running in the rain. Just how serious is that limitation? (Are we talking anything above a mist, heavy downpour, or what?). Thanks! Looking forward to being a FULL-FLEDGED Member of this little "Club"! KR> Alcohol in fuel: No. IL and also Fuel Stabilizers
Here in Northern IL I don't think we can buy ANY auto gas which does not have alcohol in it. Also, while I know some people still swear by fuel stabilizers for things which are not run regularly, I have had nothing but trouble with it the last several years, and suspect alcohol is the culprit. I used to use it in things like motorcycles, snowblowers, lawnmowers and the like, and it always worked fine. The last sevearl years whenever I used it, the item in question (a motorcycle, a snowblower for sure, maybe others, not sure) FAILED TO START, even after draining tanks, adding fresh clean gas, etc..Your experience may be different, but just a caution on this end. You may find the same thing if you try using the stuff in fuels which contain alcohol.Marc Lee Winnig mlwin...@hotmail.com (815) 301-5011 Cell and Vonage (801) 749-9460 FAX> Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2006 09:50:04 -0800> From: ronwrig...@yahoo.com> To: kr...@mylist.net> Subject: KR> Alcohol in fuel.> > No alcohol in a Certified Aircraft..
