I think the real problem with a 2si engines is parts availability. They are
not supposed to be used on man carrying craft, though we all know they are.
If someone insists on an inline 3 cylinder 2 stroke for aircraft, then Hirth
has a couple that put out a lot of power. Stillnot the best engine for a

Gathering attendees,

I'm starting to put things together for the 2016 Gathering. The
Drury Inn and Suites will be the lodging for this year. It is
located next to the interstate, opposite side from the Holiday
Inn. Twenty rooms are blocked until September 1. Blocked are 10
rooms with a single King bed and 10 rooms with double Queen beds for
those that wish to double up with a fellow attendee. The discounted
rate for KR Gathering attendees is $94 a night, discounted from their
normal rate of $135 a night. I was a bit shocked at the price
increases since 2013 but it is what it is. There are a number of
other motels in Mt.Vernon if you wish to find a lower rate. Just
google motels , Mt.Vernon, Illinois. Camping on the field is encouraged.

I had my first meeting with the hat and shirt lady (my Neighbor) this
afternoon. We worked on logo so no decision yet on actual hats /
shirts. I'm leaning toward light denim as we had 5 or 6 years ago
(yes, with a pocket) and seemed rather popular. Hats will be $15 and
shirts $25 with whatever is the final choice and I will lower the
price if possible when final decisions are made. I'm asking John
Bouyea, via this post, to open the registration page on the Gathering
web site so you may begin to register provided you trust my judgement
on the hat / shirt issue. If you want to see them first, please wait
to register so that you can register and place your order all at the
same time. That would save much confusion down the road.

Anyone having ideas on forums, wanting to see a specific forum, or
wishing to volunteer to lead a forum, communicate those request to
Paul Visk ( mailto:ppaulvsk at aol.com">ppaulvsk at aol.com ).

Any questions: mailto:flesner at frontier.com">flesner at

Hi All,

I?ve been reviewing info as I plan to update the ?new? HAPI Magnum engine on my
KR project.

What?s the consensus on the Bob Hoover oil modifications aimed at improving
reliability via better oil flow?

See:
http://bobhooversblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/hvx-mods.html;
target="_blank">http://bobhooversblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/hvx-mods.html
http://bobhooversblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/hvx-mods.html>

Specifically, do you guys grind a channel connecting the bottom and top groves
on the lifters on your aircraft conversion VW's?

Do you grind channels connecting the oil holes in the rocker arms?
(doesn?t this ?short circuit? the oil flow making less of it go to the
friction surfaces?)

Cheers,
Owen

KRnetHeads,

Doug Steen would like to notify folks that if you're looking for an
O-145 engine (65HP Lycoming) or parts for one, he knows where to find
them. One of his airpark neighbors had a large cache of these and
recently died, leaving his wife with a shop full of engines and parts.
See http://www.krnet.org/misc/O145/ for photos and contact info (at the

Hi all, I Thought I would put my two cents in about the Revmaster R2300 as I
have one of these in my kr2, When I'm not working on it trying to figure out the
bugs, when its running right it is a great engine, after about 18 months of
playing with it I am now getting 140 kts cruise and 1200 fpm climb at gross , so
that i think is pretty respectable, and can now not stress to much on it
performing properly. But the problems I have had with the engine at times I've
been ready to burn the plane! thinking I would never get this thing right. A few
times in the early hours of it flying it I had to do emergency 180 turn backs on
climb out as the engine was not going to make the full circuit, with CHT's going
through the roof at 300 deg C+. (screen only only goes to 300 got there in about
10 sec from take off, and EGT's 950 deg C+. (last flight when the heads finally
cooked). a list of the faults I had with it are. 1/ ign. timing set at approx 40
deg btdc, which cooked the heads with
in 10 hrs from new (timing was factory
set!) with a timing light shown it was correct at the prop flange, but found it
a with dial ind. on piston #1 while stripping the engine down. 2/ aluminium push
rods 6 out of the eight failed in 40 hrs, now replaced all with steel ones (rod
ends crushed into the alloy tubes) and yes they were rubbing on the push rod
outer tubes . 3/. oil leaked out like a sieve every were since new, can never
seem to get one to take up from out the back of the engine, 4/. constantly
lapping valves particularly the exhaust valves, 20 hours ago had the heads
professionally ground and re seated and just recently 3 exh. valves started
leaking again and had to re lap (about 2 hours ago). and feels like i am
adjusting tappets every 5 hours. temp figures:- CHT's on average in climb approx
180-190 degs C., 140-150 deg C in cruise 90-100 on descent.EGT's around 680-720
deg C, in climb and about 600 deg C. in cruise.Oil Temp about 60-70 deg C,
pending on day tem
p.So the engine does run pretty cool and I am running only
on 98 unleaded fuel, no ethanol. (cant afford AV gas over here or justify it.The
engine now has 130 hours on it (with 500 hundred hours spent working on it!)And
as I said earlier when its going properly it does perform very well, but the
quality of manufacture does let it down! Or mine must have just been a Friday
build.

Subject: KR> Newbie question - KR-1 or single seat KR-2S

Hi all,

A new member question here.

My primary interest is a single seater, but it seems to me that most of the
builders building 2 seaters. Since I am a first time builder, I have to
rely more on others advice than more experienced builders, but if there are
not too many single seater builders, it would be an uphill battle.

The other fact is that the KR-2S have all the latest and greatest
improvements in it, so I am thinking to get a KR-2S and narrow down the
fuselage to 1 person, build it light with a 60hp or so VW engine. That way
I can use the advice of the majority of the builders, I can use prefab
parts as available and I can build a LIGHT single seater plane with 400+
lbs empty weight, 800 lbs gross weight as it was designed originally.

Is there a downside of my plan?

Is there anyone else building along this plan?

Thanks, James

Hello and Happy New Year to everybody on the list!

I'm new guy here who's had an interest in KR's for many years. I was
recently going to drop the hammer and order a set of plans, only to
discover that the NV Aero website appears to be defunct. Going to the
website returns a message saying that the site is "down for maintenence"
and that the webstore is closed. Does anybody know what's going on here?
What can I do - or where can I go - to order plans? Enquiring minds want to
know!

Thanks,
~Larry

I've asked this before and never got an answer. For youvwho are running VW
based engines in your kr, is anyone using a Marvel-Schebler or Stromberg
carbs? Now for the opinion portion of the show...would it be reasonable to
assume that a MS carb designed for a particular engine be usable on another
engine of a different mfg with similar HP and performance?
